FOOD SPOTLIGHT: really a pleasure to share some OG taiwanese bangers on this platform! These ones from a night market (can't remember which exact one but you can find it all around!) with my family 👪 🇹🇼. First we have braised large intestine misua (brown vermicelli cooked untill softttttt). As always, it's great to see different parts of the animal used in different ways expressing their own unique flavour and texture profiles (small and large intestine taste slightly different!), I remember having to be bribed into trying offal as a kid haha 💵🍜. 3rd pic is Ba Wan, a large translucent dumpling made of rice and sweet potato flour filled with meat braised and served in a broth. It was a very wholesome experience listening to my mum not stop talking about how much this took her straight down memory lane.

FOOD SPOTLIGHT: same market, different stall. More Taiwanese bangers 🍲🇹🇼 1) fried milk fish belly 😱, such a shame I've never seen this out in the west before as its literally seabass on steroids, very similar in terms of taste and texture but there's a stupidddddd layer of fat under the skin that just kicks up the eating experience 3 levels (fish fat is bombbbb if you didn't know already). 🐟💣Pic 2) Abalone congee! 🍚 🐚 Pic 3) beef & ginger, a Chinese classic. 🥩 🐮 Pic 4) oyster pancake made with egg and cornstarch (a more gummy dough) topped with a thick, sweet yet umami sauce pic 🐚 5) a v interesting vegetable I'd never had before: gynura deux couleurs. Which tasted like a cross between kelp and hollow heart vegetable (also v Taiwanese but is available in the west! One to try definitely) 🍃

FOOD SPOTLIGHT: more market eats 🇹🇼 . All sorts of fried goods including chopped squid, chicken and lil baby crabs! Note that Taiwanese deep fried food is battered in tapioca starch making it a lot drier and crunchier 🍗🦀 🦑 ! Also on offer were different types of yakitori skewers reminiscent of my time in Japan with chicken fallopian tubes and hearts 💕🐔 (pic 2.not everyone's cup of tea haha). Pic 1 shows some of the fried goods but also 'cakes' made of taro🥔 starch (pink one) and pigs blood (dark red) 🐖

FOOD SPOTLIGHT: 'bingsu' or shaved ice ❄ a popular summer treat/dessert all over East Asia traditionally made with pure ice, this one was made of frozen milk 🥛 for that extra creamy flavour! It's shaved super thing with specially designed machines so that the ice has no sharpness or hardness to it whatsoever but rather it simply melts in a delicate way on your tongue whilst imparting the flavour of the topping 👌. You can't see, but underneath this pile of milky snow 🌨 was a load of fruit such as pineapple and mango 🍍and red adzuki beans. A personal favourite is when it's also topped with condensed milk 😍🙅‍♂️🙅‍♂️ (dat shit goes toooo hard). The only reason I think this hasn't taken off in the UK yet is that it's too cold 😂 gap in the market for sure 🤔 people usually love it as its a much lower calorie version of icecream as its either only frozen ice or milk so much reduced fat!

REVIEW: @timhowan.tw @timhowan_taiwan. Visiting the Michelin starred dimsum chain in Taiwan with my family 👪 🍚🍜🥟🍧. Its always better to go to a restaurant with a bigger group so you can try more things! I fully couldn't put the dessert items we ordered on as IG has a 10 photo limit hahaha. Id previously posted about Tim Ho Wan after my visit in Hong Kong which was great but I was pleasantly surprised to find the Taipei branch was so much better! Service was just as punctual despite being hella busy but decor and vibes were a lot more pleasant and imo the dishes were executed much better (which is really saying something). This was really a pleasure to eat here and those charsui buns were just toooo mad, the crust somewhere between crispy and crunchy with a generous meat filling that has such great balance to the sweet, savoury and umami notes as well as the meat to sauce ratio (no joke have to try at somepoint in your life 💯) . S/O to the delicious deep fried silken tofu also, I fully can't wrap my head around how they managed to do that without it disintegrating during prep and cooking, very skillful. 9/10 put it this way, I think about those buns regularly. 🤔👀🍔

I don’t like desserts that are overly sweet, but this grilled pear and milk ice cream pairing has the perfect balance of sweetness from the melted caramel, semi firm texture from the warm pear and the milk ice cream to bind it all together. @chefqiu from @themewsmosman always flexing his creativity sides and creating unique and beautiful dishes! “The Hen” is no exception!! It has your protein and carbs ratio all balanced out! The smoked mash potato is divine!!! The fried enoki mushroom on the top adds more crunch to the dish!! The chicken?? Da bomb!! Everything is just great!! What else is needed? Empty stomach to polish this dish!!
