Ray Charles Robinson (September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004), known professionally as Ray Charles, was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and composer. Among friends and fellow musicians he preferred being called "Brother Ray". He was often referred to as "The Genius".

Ray Charles contributed to the integration of country music, rhythm and blues, and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, notably with his two Modern Sounds albums. The in-your-face persona of the Monks was not their idea alone. A pair of German music promoters helped craft the band's image. The Monks' name and trademark haircuts were the managers' ideas. So were some of the creative elements of the Monks' sound. The band had a grueling performance schedule. They shared German stage billing with bands like the Kinks, the Troggs and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. The Monks appeared frequently on a television show called "Beat Club," the German version of "American Bandstand." Burger says the Monks got a mixed reaction from audiences. "We had some extremely hardcore fans that would come dressed like we were," said Burger. "They would have their heads shaven. They'd have the black clothing with the rope ties. And on the other hand, we had people who just loathed us. They could not stand us. It was really astonishing, and I'm convinced that a lot of our audience came to us, basically, to see a freak show." Life as a Monk wasn't always easy. Bass guitarist Eddie Shaw says on at least one occasion, the band was attacked on stage by audience members, presumably for perceived blasphemy. Shaw says his strongest memory of being a Monk is the moment the band first got those strange haircuts.

In late 1964, while known as the Torquays, the band issued the self-financed single "There She Walks", however, the release barely hinted at the music the group would record the following year. With the help of a German management team, they decided to change their name to the Monks and released the "Complication" single to coincide with the distribution of their one and only studio album, Black Monk Time on Polydor Records, in March 1966. Though the album and additional singles issued throughout 1966 and 1967 achieved limited success at the time, they have become highly regarded amongst music enthusiasts and commentators.

A series of touching postcards sent by a hellraiser Ozzy Osbourne in which he affectionately asks after his ill nan have emerged to belie his rock star image. The notes addressed to 'mom and dad' were penned in 1968 when the Black Sabbath star, who later became a reality TV favourite, was touring Europe with one of his first bands. As well as updates on his general well-being and asking after his family, the postcards also reveal Osbourne’s hopes of making it as big as The Beatles, his observation that the French didn’t like his long hair and a romantic interest in a German girl called Sylvia.

The Hat - Black Sabbath were an English rock band, formed in Birmingham in 1968, by guitarist and main songwriter Tony Iommi, bassist and main lyricist Geezer Butler, drummer Bill Ward, and singer Ozzy Osbourne. Black Sabbath are often cited as pioneers of heavy metal music.

The Hat - Long hair became fashionable within this period when psychedelic rock came into fruition. Famously the late sixties was when the Beatles showcased their new long-haired look too. Long hair became a status symbol of the counter-culture movement. It separated you from the normal people. A fashion statement. Metal developed out of the rock genre and long hair continued to be fashionable. During the late seventies and the eighties it also became popular to wear outlandish outfits in all genres of music - metal was no exception and they adopted outlandish outfits to set them apart form the rest. The metal movement generally chose dark, gothic and scary looking fashion choices which reflected the dark nature of their music. Since then, the fashion has stuck, new fashions evolved too. People now have different reasons for having long hair whether it’s because the like it, it’s counter-culture, they like looking like a viking, or a pirate, or a pirate-viking… It was rooted in the rock culture though where everyone basically had long hair.

The Wings haircut or flippies or flow is a popular hairstyle used in the skateboarding, surfer, and preppy community. Typically long, the style can range from long and drooping below the eyes, to a shorter length. The haircut is typically wavy and, if straight, the length comes to halfway down the ears. Instead of lying on the wearer's ears, the hair flips up and comes straight out like an airplane wing, hence the name.

In 1964, Bryant was replaced by David Ruffin, who was the lead vocalist on a number of the group's biggest hits, including "My Girl" (1964), "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" (1966), and "I Wish It Would Rain" (1967). The Let it Grow - ‘See Emily Play’ was their first song to crack the top 10 in 1967, and they didn’t manage another until ‘Another Brick in the Wall’ topped the charts in 1979. As a “serious” albums band in the 70s, singles were considered low priority to a group like Pink Floyd (Led Zeppelin, for instance, never released a single).

The Let It Grow - The band began their first tour of the UK on 4 October 1968, still billed as the New Yardbirds; they played their first show as Led Zeppelin at the University of Surrey in Battersea on 25 October. Tour manager Richard Cole, who would become a major figure in the touring life of the group, organised their first North American tour at the end of the year. Their debut album, Led Zeppelin, was released in the US during the tour on 12 January 1969, and peaked at number 10 on the Billboard chart; it was released in the UK, where it peaked at number 6, on 31 March. According to Steve Erlewine, the album's memorable guitar riffs, lumbering rhythms, psychedelic blues, groovy, bluesy shuffles and hints of English folk, made it "a significant turning point in the evolution of hard rock and heavy metal".

The Let It Grow - In November 1968, Grant secured a $143,000 advance contract from Atlantic Records, which was then the biggest deal of its kind for a new band. Atlantic were a label with a catalogue of mainly blues, soul, and jazz artists, but in the late 1960s they began to take an interest in British progressive rock acts. Record executives signed Led Zeppelin without having ever seen them. Under the terms of their contract, the band had autonomy in deciding when they would release albums and tour, and had the final say over the contents and design of each album. They would also decide how to promote each release and which tracks to release as singles. They formed their own company, Superhype, to handle all publishing rights.

The Afro - Jimi had very curly Afro hair which often took on a life of it’s own. His hair always looked liked it was in a need of a trim but the free flowing curls meant that his hair style was very much in keeping with the look back in the 60’s.

The Fro - Jimi was musically gifted from a young age but it wasn’t until he was discharged from the Army in 1962 that he then went on to become well known as a musician. The Flopped Mod - During the early to mid 1960s, as mod grew and spread throughout England, certain elements of the mod scene became engaged in well-publicized clashes with members of rival subculture, rockers.[4] The mods and rockers conflict led sociologist Stanley Cohen to use the term "moral panic" in his study about the two youth subcultures,[5] which examined media coverage of the mod and rocker riots in the 1960s.

The Flopped Mop - "He was a very strange fellow," Townshend said of Entwistle. "I loved John, obviously, for his eccentricities." The first song Entwistle wrote for the Who bowled the band over, highlighting his dark, absurdist sense of humor and distinct playing style. Never released as a single, it still became the group's most requested live song. According to Townshend, it was also Jimi Hendrix's favorite Who song, which shouldn't be all that surprising. "What's interesting in our group is that the roles are reversed," Townshend said. "John's the lead guitar."

The Floppy Mop -In the summer of 1964 a young British rock band called the High Numbers released their debut single “Zoot Suit,” and watched it disappear without a trace. The supremely-forgettable song was written by their manager Pete Meaden; a few months later, when they headed back into the studio, they decided to rename themselves the Who and let guitarist Pete Townshend try his hand at songwriting. It was a wise decision. The first single released was “Can’t Explain,” which kicked off a stunning two-decade run of music that paved the way for punk, metal, power pop and progressive rock. In honor of the Who’s ongoing 50th anniversary tour, we have ranked their best songs.

The Dandy Hipster -The Ravens recorded their debut single, a cover of Little Richard's "Long Tall Sally," in January 1964. Before the single was released, the group changed their name to the Kinks. "Long Tall Sally" was released in February of 1964 and failed to chart, as did their second single, "You Still Want Me." The band's third single, "You Really Got Me," was much noisier and dynamic, featuring a savage, fuzz-toned two-chord riff and a frenzied solo from Dave Davies. Not only was the final version the blueprint for the Kinks' early sound, but scores of groups used the heavy power chords as a foundation. "You Really Got Me" reached number one within a month of its release; released on Reprise in the U.S., the single climbed into the Top Ten. "All Day and All of the Night," the group's fourth single, was released late in 1964 and it rose all the way to number two; in America, it hit number seven. During this time, the band also produced two full-length albums and several EPs.

The Hipster - Their music was influenced by a wide range of genres, including rhythm and blues, British music hall, folk and country. The Hipster - The Kinks are an English rock band formed in Muswell Hill, North London, in 1964 by brothers Ray and Dave Davies. They are regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s.[1][2] The band emerged during the height of British rhythm and blues and Merseybeat, and were briefly part of the British Invasion of the United States until their touring ban in 1965 (as a result of constant fighting between the brothers).

The Hipster- It wasn’t only Mick’s choice of clothes that made him a fashion icon in the Sixties and Seventies, but also his upending of gender norms. As with 1968’s The Rolling Stones Rock And Roll Circus film, there’s no doubting his masculinity with respect to his look here in 1973; yet there’s just the right dash of effeminacy provided by his hair, use of make-up, clothes and, most important of all, the way he’s carrying himself. In the early days of his career, he kept his hair very straight, only allowing a slight curl at the ends. Over time, he has relaxed this a bit so that his hair has taken more natural curl. This serves to keep it looking thick and full. It also makes styling and maintenance easier. Where he once had to iron his hair to straighten it and apply wax to hold it in place, today, he can simply run his fingers through it and pull it into place. A spritz of hair spray is all that is needed to hold it in place because the curly hair locks in place naturally against itself.

The Hippie Hair - Although Mick, alongside Keith, has been at the forefront of the Stones for the bulk of their career, there was once a time when the band’s founder, Brian Jones, was where everything was at. Captured here in 1967 with his golden locks and outfit equal parts drag and rakish, he has every reason to be grinning, and Jagger — whose smart striped blazer can’t even compensate for his bowl-and-scissor bangs — every reason to look less than thrilled.

The mop-top Also known as The Beatle haircut, the mop-top gets its name because of its resemblance to a wet mop. It made a splash in 1964 when The Beatles came to America. So revolutionary was the hairstyle, it was deemed illegal in communist Brezhnev Russia for its statement of dishevelled rebelliousness.

The Mop Top - Arguably the most iconic men's hairstyle of the 1960s, the mop-top was popularized by the band The Beatles and further emulated by rock groups such as The Rolling Stones, Herman's Hermits and The Doors. The mop-top was a haircut that sported a fringe of long bangs that grazed the eyebrows in front and hung down to hit the shirt collar in back.
