“Annie, pie cart Annie, cart of dreams ❤️” (showing my age here). Woodfire pie floaters anyone? In Loxton SA on the banks of the Murray is another historic pioneer village. It boasts a really old pie cart that got restored nicely. The old pie carts in ADL would be pulled by a horse and had a chimney like a gypsies home. This one fits that description. The cart was used in Loxton originally. It has a woodfire oven that has been used recently (ashes still inside). It also has cool plate shock absorbers that you still see on ‘modern’ large american cars. Also interesting is the wooden pie mould. The historic village sells pie floaters from this cart on special days when volunteers will dress up and party like it’s 1899. Apparently the floaters would be sold out first, the friendly volunteer lady told me. Not surprised, they are way too cheap!! ($4.50) The village looks really tidy but is running at a loss (no one there on a sunny Sunday arvo 🤔) so we have to see what will happen with it. The pie cart is still there to be seen though. #piecart #piefloater #saicon #piefloaters #piefloaterchronicles #makepiefloatersgreatagain #adelaideblogger #adelaidefastfood #keepthepeasoup #keepadelaideweird #southaustralia #southaustraliafood #southaustraliantourism #straya

Havent had much luck at the Upper Sturt General Store. But its my fault, rocking up at closing time hoping there are some pie floaters left. Of course they are sold out around 4 pm! We’ll try again around noon some day. Big groups are not a good idea either: there’s just a small stock of pies. Learned about the SA icecream brand “Golden North’ with their production in Laura, pretty close to the old Stone Hut bakery where we have to go one day too. #piefloater #piefloaters #keepadelaideweird #keepthepeasoup #saicon #farmersunion #goldennorth #vilispies #adelaideblogger #adelaidefastfood @uppersturtgeneralstore #makepiefloatersgreatagain

Historic moment: our first pie floater at a pie cart: #givepeasachance @adelaideveganfoodvan . We were quite hungry after a 700k drive and knew this moment was waiting for us. These guys are hard to find because it’s only once or twice a month they take the pie cart for a drive, and usually they end up at @thewheaty. Jimmy and Louise have full time jobs and this is a side job they clearly take pride in. We had a good conversation about the disappeared pie carts and that they are the only pie floater cart in ADL together with the Villi-carts at AFL-games ( to be checked still). Review: We got a lentil-mushroom and a mexican pie floater. Note all food is vegan. The pies were delish (homemade) and the pea soup had a good (dutch 😉) taste. We didn’t miss the meat at all. Portions and pie could be a bit bigger but on the flipside the price ($6-$7.5) is lower than the other more ‘factory’ pie floaters we had. Cute pie cart and thumbs up 👍👍for serving pie floaters from a cart! Sufficient condiments available. Rating: F 9, A 7.5, S 8.5 Check @thewheaty calendar to see when they are there again and get a healthy floater at a pie cart like the old days! #piefloater #piefloaters #piecart #makepiefloatersgreatagain #adelaideblogger #adelaidefastfood #piefloaterchronicles #saicon #vegan #givepeasachance #keepthepeasoup #keepadelaideweird #southaustralia #southaustraliafood #southaustraliantourism

It has been a bit quiet on the pie floater front. Hot days, Sydney visitors who weren't eager to try a floater despite my promotion skills... hard times... lets step back in time around 1890 where WH Bishop had a pie cart/coffee stall on Howells Corner ( opposite Beehive Crn ) named after Howells Stationary shop. (see first pic taken around 1870) WH was a very humble and well behaved man and his requests for extension of his licenses were honored( pics 2-5). The clerk wrote: "to the best of my knowledge this person has conducted himself in a very respectful manner and would suggest that he be granted the renewal of his permit'" Then in 1904 there was a small dispute about the license fee because mr Bishop tendered for a license but unknowingly had to compete with another stall nearby on North Terrace and if he would have known in advance he would have tendered for less. Interestingly that letter and his acceptance of the original fee (pics 6,7)was written on official letter paper of his cafe business with 4 shops across Adelaide. That shows good and pleasant behavior goes a long way. Curious what happened with that brand though ...#piefloater #makepiefloatersgreatagain #piefloaters #keepthepeasoup #keepadelaideweird #adelaideblogger #adelaidefastfood #whereisbishopcafe

Unexpected visit to Prices Fresh Bakery on Port Rd. 40C is a bit hot for a floater but didn't want to miss the opportunity. Good day for another SA icon: Farmers Union iced coffee ( or its nothing). It was 45 min before closing time but some personnel gave the impression they were not that happy we came in that late ordering difficult pie floaters. Anyway great soup , plenty vinegar and tomato sauce, average bacon/cheese pie (doughy). Ambience was basically a tv with the Australian Open and some very soft background music. Palm trees on the parking made me feel to be on Sunshine Blvd LA ( never been) . Sign needs a clean though... Quick visit to the archives. The people there got me the logbook of coffee stall/pie cart licenses and some of the letters regarding these licenses, some dating back to 1861! One stood out, the one from William Hope dated 15/2/1877 who wanted a license for a refreshment stall 3 mornings a week 2AM-8AM on market days (corner Park lands/Rundle St) He writes: "the stall is simply for the sale of cheap coffee tea, bread & butter or pies for the benefit of the people coming into the market during the night from the Country". That reminded me of the women from Hahndorf who would walk 35km at night to the markets while warding off thiefs ( see memorial garden in Hahndorf) I can imagine after walking 35km at night a coffee and pie (floater) would go down well! That trail they walked can still be followed. #piefloater #piefloaters #toughcookies #adelaideblogger #saicon #makepiefloatersgreatagain #adelaidefastfood #keepadelaideweird #keepthepeasoup #yourhumbleservant #kingofthepiefloaters

Just saw this coffee vendor and it made me think of a picture of an early coffee /pie stall from thepiecart.com.au, see 2nd pic. You can imagine a pot of soup and ready to go to serve floaters. The owner @thatcoffeeguy_adl was worried people are too health-conscious nowadays to have a good turnover of pie floaters, given the fact he needs to have almond-, soy-, rice-, and lactose- free milk available on his cart ( I feel his pain, we have a similar situation at home 😒🙄). It's probably that and other food options ( maccas, kfc, kebabs) that doesn't help the pie floater cause... good coffee btw! #makepiefloatersgreatagain #piefloater #piefloaters #keepthepeasoup #keepadelaideweird #adelaideblogger #adelaidefastfood #thatcoffeeguy_adl #saicon

Just a few pictures of the same pie cart in better days when it used to be at the Railway Station on North Terrace before it was sold in 2007 by Skycity Casino to Old Tailem Town. The pie floater is historic too, kindly shared by @travelbetter who posted this beauty recently but provided additional information: they took the picture in 2007 when they visited a pie cart near Burp Borrito in the city that is now still in Hindley street. So inadvertently they might have taken a picture of one of the last pie floaters served from the Balfours pie cart! Note the metal spoon? Better than the plastic stuff used nowadays. #piefloater #piefloaters #keepadelaideweird #keepthepeasoup #adelaide #adelaidefastfood #tailemoldtown #balfours #saicon #makepiefloatersgreatagain #piefloaterchronicles

Ok I have been dissing Balfours a bit but they did have an awesome pie cart on North Terrace near the Railway station. It is now shoved between two buildings at Old Tailem Town Pioneer Village💔. It was a beautiful day for a pilgrimage to the last resting place of one of the iconic pie carts and to see it up close. The owner of the town allowed us to go inside. The ceiling is coming down a bit but otherwise it is in reasonable condition. Worth restoring? Some nice signs still inside. And a bit of a feel of how it is to own a pie cart 😅. Hahndorf end 1800's: from a pie floater perspective nothing really happened there. As we know the Germans don't have a rich meat pie history ( nor do the Dutch btw) so no pie floater stories in that part of SA. However you can get a pretty good Bratwurst with Sauerkraut here ( and please remove the cheese, that's not German at all) . There are a handful of cafes in the Hills though that serve pie floaters in winter. I will publish a list around that time. You could expect it: DIY or home made pie floater!! Based on Dutch style pea soup made by our friends from the Netherlands but in Adelaide for decades. He made enough soup and brought Vili pies for 15 ppl and it was yum. Also my first time trying classic Rosella sauce and great to have pavlova as dessert, which I like so much that if I knew about its existence before I would have immigrated 15 years earlier. Nano Cafe take 2: @rgl_84 and me went there to share a salad with the pasticcio as side dish (@likibeachlifestyle hi pooky 😬) coz THEY HAD THEM ON THE MENU! Yay!! Nice outdoor seating area. The table needed wiping but that was done in no time. The salad looked great and tasted yum! Ok enough about the salad. The pie looked fantastic and is quite large. The ragout inside was creamy but could be a bit more seasoned imho. The bottom of the pie was a bit doughy but that could be due to the sauce/broth which is nice with peas, red onions and the needed fresh chillis. All in all not bad but to be honest from a food perspective I liked the pasta better! @rgl_84 judging skills were impacted because he was too hungry like the wolf 😉🐺F 7.2, A 8, S 7.5 #piefloater #piefloaters #southaustraliafood #saicon #southaustraliantourism #piefloaterchronicles #makepiefloatersgreatagain #keepthepeasoup #keepadelaideweird #weloveyouspaghetti #adelaideblogger #adelaidefastfood #adelaide @nanocafe

Leonardo da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Bell, Alfred Nobel, Gyro Gearloose, all famous inventors. Another genius that should be added to that list is the famous Ern 'Shorty' Bradley, a baker from Port Pirie South Australia. Word has it that he (possibly by accident) invented the pie floater, maybe by dropping a pie in the pea soup. Anyway, a star was born and around 1900 Ern advertised pie floaters in the local newspapers. Nerd alert: some other accidental inventions that changed the world on a slightly smaller scale than the pie floater: Coca Cola, cornflakes, penicillin, microwave ovens, X-ray images and the pacemaker. First picture Erns pie cart ‘the Duke of York” in Adelaide 1907 with a brother Gibbs ( later more about the earlier BeeGees) and second one Ern Bradley's ad. @rgl_84 and myself went highly enthusiastic and full of anticipation to Nano Cafe to try the pie floater with an Italian twist, the Pasticcio. Unfortunately this dish wasn't available , its a special that gets served once in a while. What to do? We ended up ordering Spaghetti Arabiatta and a side salad ( because I promised my wife to eat healthy). And yes, the lunch was good, and yes, the amenities were clean and yes, the service was friendly but we couldn't help leaving with a hole in our soul in which an interesting pie floater nicely would have fitted.....F (-) A (7.5) S (7.5) #piefloater #piefloaters #adelaideblogger #adelaidefastfood #keepthepeasoup #keepadelaideweird #saicon #makepiefloatersgreatagain #nanocafe #weloveyouspaghetti #piefloaterchronicles #adelaide #southaustraliafood #southaustraliantourism

Because it has been the longest running pie floater business in ADL ( and I found a pile of photo's I was dying to re-publish 😬) now a brief overview of the +\- 130 yr Cowley history to honor the Cowley cart near GPO at Franklin St. The first pie cart was licensed to William Millar as a 'coffee stall stand' in 1871 and located near the Prince Alfred Hotel just south of the Adelaide Town Hall ( that would be opposite the post office however the Treasury is there. There is a Prince Alfred Lane though). This was the predecessor of the Cowley Pie Cart. A Bill Cowley produced the first square pies around the end of WW2. Cowleys sold their own pies till Oct 2010 near the Post Office where the power source is still visible. If the man on the first picture is a Mr Cowley this would make a great statue. Who is Mr Franklin anyway? #piefloater #piefloaters #piefloaterchronicles #keepthepeasoup #adelaideblogger #adelaidefastfood #adelaide #keepadelaideweird #makepiefloatersgreatagain #cowleystreet picture credits to likeminded spirits on Pinterest & Facebook

I had a bit of time on my hand and read a few weeks ago that the Prices Fresh Bakery is unique because they are the only drive-through bakery. I'm not a drive-through person myself, as I always stain my clothes with whatever I eat in the car and I can't imagine anything worse than wearing my Sunday clothes and eating a pie floater with tomato sauce behind the wheel at the same time, let alone while driving. So to be on the safe side I checked out the drive-through after closing time. First I noticed the spelling 'Drive Thru' which saves about 20% paint on the road. Very environmental friendly. The menu is quite legible with pie floaters listed on top 👌🏻where they rightfully belong. Friendly Thank You sign that reminds of the USA 60's ( only been there In 1989 but OK). I was wondering whether there was kangaroo or goanna in the outback pie but unfortunately there wasn't as a concerned staff member ensured me. She probably wondered why I went twice thru the drive-thru ( it's contagious) after hours. Have to try eating a pie floater in the car but need to wear a full cover overall then for sure.... #piefloater #piefloaters #adelaideblogger #adelaidefastfood #adelaide #makepiefloatersgreatagain #keepadelaideweird #keepthepeasoup #piefloaterchronicles #throughorthru

As the semi-permanent pie floater carts have gone and local pie floater lovers and tourists from all corners of the globe are flocking together, roaming the streets of Adelaide, desperately in search of the SA icon, like a cat looking for its food that is relocated to the other side of the kitchen, I thought it was a good idea to publish the locations in ADL (and one in Stone Hut 2.5 hrs north of ADL) where pie floaters can be found all year round, be it traditional or a bit fancy. The link to google maps is in my bio, I hope it works for you all. #piefloater #piefloaters #piefloaterchronicles #adelaideblogger #keepadelaideweird #adelaidefastfood #keepthepeasoup #makepiefloatersgreatagain #saicon #dontcry #comfortfoodishere.

Yay, dinner not ready and evening meeting so a good excuse for a 10PM pie floater (#11) at Bakery on O'Connell. It was packed with cricket fans, including some authentic pie floater addicts from the Yorke Peninsula. The 3 Amigos had fond memories of the Cowley and Balfours pie carts. They were still cheering, only now to entering patrons by saying: 'do yourself a favor and get a pie floater!'. Obedient as I am I got myself a 'pie of the month' pizza pie floater with tomato sauce, vinegar and tabasco ( thanks for the tip @1brunetta2bionde ). The tasty pizza pie and tabasco lifted the whole dish quite a bit and liked it much better than the 3 previous ones I had here. The tomato sauce bottle looked a bit gross but otherwise again a great experience and amazing to have a chat and high-fives with some likeminded spirits. Pie Floater Lovers of the World, Unite ! Why are we here? Is there life in outer space? What happens when we die? Why did the pie floater carts disappear from the Adelaide CBD streets? All questions that have tortured humanity for decades. Regarding the last one: In 1939 the Adelaide City Council decided not to reissue licenses for pie carts (called 'coffee stalls' because they sold coffee with pies and floaters) once the current license holder decided to stop trading. For proof see exhibit 2 dated 20th of Jan 1939; a few months later WW2 started, I am not surprised. So logically slowly but surely all carts disappeared. Ambitious Prospective Pie Floater Cart Entrepreneurs, a career choice on par with jobs like astronaut, airline pilot, ballerina and fire man, just couldn't get a license for a viable spot in the CBD. It looks like then and now the local government is not too eager to support the pie floater cause, the only unique feature of SA! Go to south.australia.com and search for 'pie floater'. Results? Zilch (see exhibit 3). Floater time! Back at the Bakers Tray for pie floater #10, now with a better understanding of the concept of Mushy Peas. Apologies for my ignorance and my dissing of the mushy peas when I first encountered them here. Lovely lady who wants to remain anonymous served the pie floater, although she struggled to find the peas initially. Ordered a standard beef pie (from Enjoy bakery, note the similar font/style of the stall signage) and got pepper, salt, vinegar and tomato sauce offered. Ambience? Well it's the Central Market. Cute table though. Pie Floater was alright. Service was good: hence F:6.9 A:7.0 S:8.0. Credits to the fact that this is the only traditional pie floater joint in the CBD (unless proven otherwise). I had to wipe away a tear when visiting this historic location. It's Unbelievable that there is no plaque, where everywhere else in Australia monuments have been erected where some hardly known explorer pitched his tent for the night. Anyway this is the power-post where the last semi-permanent pie floater cart (Cowley's) got its power from, outside the General Post Office in Franklin Street. Now isn't that nice! I popped in the City Archives during lunch (conveniently located 50m away from my workplace) and within a minute the friendly people there pulled out a pile of historic documents on pie carts. An hour later I could pick up an envelope with copies of anything relevant to pie carts! Free of charge!! (which made my Dutch heart glad). Third photo a list of 9 pie carts that had a license in 1939 and their locations in the city and (last photo) a License Agreement signed on the 18th of December 1937 (funny enough the engagement date of my parents albeit a few years earlier) by mr Gordon Gibbs (3rd on the list) and Lord Mayor Arthur George Barrett. Cant wait for Thursday :)

That's confirmed, no Balfours cafes that serve pie floaters. 1-0 for Vili's

Since 3 pie floaters in 4 days is enough, for now a brief history regarding pie floaters and Adelaide. Apparently around 1900 there were around 13 pie carts across Adelaide. People of all walks of life would get a pie floater after their beers before going home past midnight. Unfortunately those pie carts disappeared and there were two carts left in the early 2000's, one near the Railway Station ( Balfours) and one near the Post Office ( Cowleys). Despite putting the pie floater on the National Trust list also these carts disappeared. There are two companies that have pie (floater) carts and operate irregularly ( to be visited still): Cafe de Vili's at sport (AFL) events and any event requiring catering and "Give Peas A Chance " for vegetarian options. Personally I heard about pie floaters in 1990 when staying in Newcastle NSW for 3 months and reading a book about Aussie culture ( here we pause for laughter 😉) . It explained the concept of a pie floater and the possible correlation of the dish with the high suicide rate in Adelaide. How happy I was that after some 27 years I finally could try for myself whether my depressions would get worse eating one of the SA icons . Clearly not. Try one, you unbelievers ;) For more info you don't want to know stay tuned ....

Bit disappointed that Balfours, the other SA pie giant, doesn't serve pie floaters in their franchised cafe's (as far as I know). So no score for them. Boo

Historic moment : my first (take away) pie floater from "the Bakers Tray" stall 25 in the Central Market not far from the entrance on Grote Street.
