A powerful, haunting debut that steps seamlessly from the horrors of people-trafficking to the magic of African folklore by an award-winning Ghanaian-British filmmaker, shortlisted for the Branford Boase award 2018 and nominated for the CILIP Carnegie award. Sante was a baby when she was washed ashore in a sea-chest laden with treasure. It seems she is the sole survivor of the tragic sinking of a ship carrying migrants and refugees. Her people. Fourteen years on she's a member of Mama Rose's unique and dazzling circus. But, from their watery grave, the unquiet dead are calling Sante to avenge them: A bamboo flute. A golden bangle. A ripening mango which must not fall . . . . . . are these the missing pieces of the jigsaw which will tell Sante's story? . . . #bookbloggers #bookblog #bookshelves #africanwriter #african #africanlit #africanliterature #ghanaian #ghanaianblogger #ghana🇬🇭 #ghanaianwriters #ghanaianskillingit #ghanaianauthors #ghanaians #westafrican #africanbook #africanbooks #bookaholic #africanauthors #africanstory #africanwomenrock #africanstories #bookstagrammers #bookaddicts #blackbookblogger #blackbooks #blacklit

This week we will bring you Ghanas finest authors...especially the ones you may not be familiar with. Do not believe that African literature is minimal. It is monumental and there is so much of it you don't know where to start. Thats why we exist. Do not follow those that give you the impression that #africanliterature is something new. Those people don't come from literate families. They like to believe they are victims of circumstance. African literature has always existed. They just couldn't be bothered to find out about it. . . . . . . #ghana #ghana🇬🇭 #ghanaian #ghanaians #ghanaian_artists #ghanaianwriters #ghanaianauthors #african #africans #africanlit #westafrican #africanauthors #africanwriter #africanbloggers #africanstory #ghanamustgo #niiparkes #gapeople #twi #fante #blacklit #blackblog #blackbloggers #britishghanaians #literature #africanpoets #accraghana #ghanaianskillingit #bookblogger

-🕊- #حكاية #الاسد #الحمارالوحشي #طفولتي #راوي #rafikinaafriki #savethelions #storyteller #hakawati #africa #africanstory #storytelling #Black&White #colors #cuantacuentos #oslolove #kenyalove #roots #ourroots #raicesdecielo #organicvibes #masaimara #savanna #life #eventyr #fairytail #historieforteller #livetpåsavannen #الحكواتي

One of the main artists on my spotify playlist whilst writing over the past 2 years has been FKA Twigs. The song 'Two weeks' was on rotation for 4 months. A song where a woman is telling... almost warning a man what she is capable of. It was perfect for channelling my antagonist... Mammy wata. Mammy wata (mermaids) by African standards have dominion over men. She must be obeyed if you want to be prosperous as a man. If you cheat on her she will destroy everything you have worked for. A couple of years ago my cuz got a taxi in the middle of the night in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The other passengers freaked out because she was wearing white and had long dreadlocks. She was accused of being mammy wata. The men got out of the car and ran off down the road. When she got home her family was unsympathetic. They said we don't know why you gotta walk around with your hair with that dreadlock style. Cut it off!! It serves you right. . #mammywata #mamiwata #mermaidlove #mermaid #mermaids #oshun #oshungoddess #oshun🌻 #bruja #brujalife #brujasofinstagram #brujavibes #brujah #africanstory #africanwomen #africanwriter #africanauthor #westafrican #sierraleonean #sierraleone #freetown #africanbloggers #blackbloggers

Reaching up into the northern most corner of Mzanzi, I stretch out unapologeticaly before you. As you lay your eyes upon me, I take your breath away. I have been here for millennia, have stood the test of time...my rocky cliffs defy gravity and the layered burst of colour and texture on my face is a testimony to my journey. I have witnessed it all...from the ancient kings of Mapungubwe in their quest for gold; to hunters and explorers in search of ivory...I have led countless VaTsonga salt traders through my veins making their way to the mighty Limpopo river to trade their wares..I have seen young maidens rhythmically dance in honour of the legendary phyton god on the edge of Lake Fundudzi. I am home to the ancestors of the VhaVenda and, at night, you can hear the roar of the mysterious white lion spirit that inhabits my heart. High up in the clouds, I give refuge to the largest colony of Cape Vultures in the Southern Hemisphere...and in my belly I provide a safe haven for animals big and small...deep in the folds of my lush green arms, I cradle many secrets yet to be discovered...I am the Soutpansberg. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••Come and explore my heart space...discover my secrets on foot or by car. Come closer and connect to my people and their rich, unique culture...dance by fireside and celebrate my heritage under a blanket of a million stars. I am Limpopo...come closer and fall in love. 💕 DM us to find out more about this incredible province. 📷@_barefootboy •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••#lovelimpopo #iamlimpopo #soutpansberg #travellimpopo #limpopo #travelafrica #culturaltourism #experience #explore #offthebeatenpath #mountains #venda #tsonga #localislekker #visitlimpopo #responsibletraveller #sustainabletravel #africanstory #travelyoung

Here is a comment from the editor. When I saw it at first I was surprised. I thought what do you mean? Are you kidding me? Where have you been all your life? But that was MY ignorance Why should I expect people across the globe to understand what's going on in different societies across the world? This is why stories should be shared. Stories should be told. In this case the cultural context of mermaids are very different across the world. Nobody SHOULD know everything about you or your culture just because you demand it. It's about an exchange. Create exchange and you create understanding. But anyhoo...mermaids are still worshipped in parts of Africa, Caribbean and Brazil. Anyhoo that's why my focus for @ibshowafrica is to share stories and creat exchange. Credit: The Omo People by Hans Silvester from Sotirios. People ask me what my next book is about all the time. The story makes some uncomfortable. They look at me wondering what kind of person I really am. I am not what you see. I am everything you thought I wasn't when I write. Magic realism is okay when talking about Knights and goblins but if you go all African people think it's witchcraft and yet they talk about angels following them around in spirit in the supermarket. They talk about speaking in tongues with the holy spirit in church. Are writers a vessel for the unknown? Do they see, hear and experience the world differently? Why is that? Is it a cognitive thing? Africa is full of stories that haven't been experienced yet. I declare myself as someone who is going to tell you those stories. So get ready to be uncomfortable. Get ready to wince but most of all get ready to be blown away . . . #africanstory #africans #africanlit #africanfestival #africanliterature #womenwhowrite #womenwriting #magicrealism #colombiaismagicalrealism #writing #writinganovel #african #tribal #mamiwata #mammywata #bruja #brujasofinstagram #storytelling #writersofcolor #blackgirlmagic #blackgirlsread #blackwriters #africanwriter #africanauthor #authorsoninstagram #womenwritersofinstagram

Mindfulness exists in every culture in the world including Africa. Each book in the ‘Moments of Mindfulness’ series pairs the wise words of a great writer, master, philosopher or poet with Olivier Föllmi’s beautiful and moving photographs. Föllmi travelled far and wide to witness the celebrations, landscapes, rituals and traditions of cultures all over the world, discovering new ways of seeing as he sought to understand and capture through photography the connections linking the people to their ancestral lands. The effect is transcendental and transformative, awakening our senses and preparing our souls to receive these simple yet profound teachings. Danielle and Olivier Foellmi have co-written over 15 books. They are the official photographers of the Dalai Lama and recipient of the prestigious World Press award. . . . #mindfulness #mindfullness #mindfulnessquotes #africanstory #africanblogger #africanbloggers #africansread #africanbook #africanexploring #africanlit #africanliterature #mindfulliving #african #africans #africanyoga #africanthoughts #africanproverbs #bookblogger #bookblog #bookshelves #coaching

LION HEART - GENEVIEVE NNAJI- NETFLIX - NEW YORK TIMES- Unfortunately, this wickedness that reigns supreme governs the hearts of all black people all over the world. Talents and beauty of a black person appreciate with white people but depreciate with the black people. Black people don’t support or nurture hard work and talents of its people, and that includes your family, friends, strangers, colleagues and relatives. What we do is abuse, exploit, pull down, manipulate and destroy the beauty and talents of fellow black people... The rich/powerful white people are so superior that they reward or support hard-work and build other talents around them. They’re inclined to building society. The rich/powerful black people are so inferior that they hardly reward or support hard work and they keep other talents around them down, so they can be seen as gods. They are inclined to stagnating society. That’s why with all the talents, beauty and natural resources in Africa, we are still poor. Nigerians criticize Genevieve Nnaji’s new film LION HEART. They intend to destroy her talent and hard work. New York Times called it “A MASTERPIECE “ NETFLIX paid her $3.8 million for it. They intend to inspire, reward and nurture her talents and efforts. If Genevieve Nnaji was Caucasian or a foreigner, Nigerians will sing her praises. The fact that she’s a Nigerian, she is scorned by her fellow Nigerians and blacks. Wickedness and jealousy, even with all your zillion churches all over the country. Disgusting!
