My dad used to be very shy and someone who didn't laugh very much. That is until he met my mom. The video above was filmed by him. When a relative of my mother visits her, something fun always happens so even though I am not there, my dad films them or tells me about them. Each time he tells me, he always ends up saying 'that was good seeing 'la petite Elise' - that's how he calls my mom - having fun with her family.' . . . After talking about death, I wanted to finish this series on a lighter note to show you singing is ingrained in Douala's culture. . . . This time around, tata Agnès, a cousin of the family, came to visit from Texas. As my mom and my aunt were recalling their teens together, she created a song on the spur of the moment. The lyrics say: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ '[Jesus] is going to take me, Make things work out for me, Elevate me, Don't look for me in Kotto*, Jesus changed my address, Don't look for me there, It's been a while I moved' ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My aunt created that song to give her address in Texas to my parents. I cut the part in which she rapped her address, yes no joke, for her privacy but I would have loved to share it with you because that was the last thing I expected her to do! That's how silly my family can be. . . . Sad or happy, our house is always lively during family gatherings. Growing up, I always remember our Christmas and New Year Eve to be very noisy. People laughed, ate, cried and sang their hearts out. My mom has 10 siblings and I have 16 cousins, add in the extended family and we are a big bunch! My mom's direct family is split between Bordeaux and Paris, and since we can't fit 50 people in one house, people visit and call each other on different days during periods like Christmas. I have no memories of Christmas spent without my mom's family. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *Kotto is an area in Douala ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ PS: Yes, that's Ewodi - my mom's language - that you hear at the end of the video! . . . #thelbd #thelbdstories #thelittleblackdiary #african #africandiaspora #cameroon #douala #france #culture #intercultural #multicultural #africanfamily #song #africanstory #africantradition #cousin #mother #fun #familymemories #family

In my mother's ethnic group, singing seems to be a way to sort out feelings. They sing at church, when they are sad, when they miss someone and when they mourn. . . . When I was 21, my great-uncle Jean, one of the little brother of my grandmother passed away. We were all in France at the time. My great-uncle was the last brother my grandmother had alive and I met him when I was 9 or 10. The first time we met, I couldn't believe it. He looked like an older version of my uncle Koffi, so when I saw him I ran to my mom and said 'Maman! there's someone looking exactly like tonton Koffi at the door!'. They both laughed as I was so astonished and that's how I got to know Papa Jean. . . . Papa Jean had tender eyes and a tender smile and spoke quietly, exactly like my uncle Koffi. He visited our house in Douala quite often. I adored him but that day I heard he passed, it took me by surprise. He was in his 60s and died from an asthma attack. They didn't manage to bring him to the hospital on time and he died of something my dad, my brother and I all have but can deal with because, in Europe, asthma is well treated. I was on the street alone on the phone when my mom told me. We left Cameroon when I was 12, and I never saw my great-uncle again. It was the first time I experienced death as my mom did, like someone from the African diaspora. . . . That day I went to visit my parents, 'I want to hold your hand' by The Beatles was playing all over the house. It was one of Papa Jean favourite songs he used to listen when he was a student. That day, my mother and sang it for him. . . . #thelbd #thelbdstories #thelittleblackdiary #cameroon #douala #cameroon #africandiaspora #grief #african #tradition #family #love #culture #multicultural #intercultural #death #familymatters #song #beatles #mourning #love #africanstories #africanstory #familystory #familystoryteller

It's difficult to get an answer from my mom when I directly ask her about her family. She needs to be emotionally triggered to tell me things. If I ask my dad about his family he'd tell me 'what do you need to know exactly?', whereas my mom would just be annoyed by all the questions, so I always need to be prepared because I never know when she'll drop some gems about her family. . . . My great-aunt's funeral was definitely an emotional trigger because even when I didn't want to know, she'd make me stay with her to tell me who was who on a picture or to explain me about the way they mourn. That's exactly what she did with the video above. But she didn't tell me from the start what it was about. She used a childhood memory to explain it to me. She told me when she was a child my grandfather was suspected of embezzlement and had to spend some days in jail while the police investigated him. My great-aunt went to the police station where he was and started singing a song, she created on the spur of the moment, telling my grandfather's story and emphasizing on his honesty. Then she said to me this video was similar because they were singing about my great-aunt. She explained to me it wasn't unusual people used music and songs to celebrate or clear a family member from wrongful accusations. That was such a roundabout way to tell me about what was happening in that video but I learned more things than I thought I would! . . . #thelbd #thelbdstories #thelittleblackdiary #africa #cameroon #douala #african #africantradition #mourning #death #storytelling #tellastory #family #familymatters #motheranddaughter #memories #culture #multicultural #intercultural #storyteller #story #familystory #familystoryteller #africanstory #africanstories

#africanpeople #africannation #afticantouch #africanamericans #africanamerican #people #history #story #africanstory #africa #weafricans

Everybody needs somebody, be that a friend, a partner, or someone you’re related to. The people we choose are the perfect reflection of who we are but most importantly is who we’re becoming. My mentor always told me, if you want to be better, be with someone who is better than you and you’ll never stop learning. So choose those who can help you reach the better version of yourself, who inspires you to chase your dreams, and who supports you when times are hard. And, trust me, they will be. However powerful you think you are, there will be battles that you won’t be able to fight alone. Having someone by your side, someone who understands your vision and loves you enough to push you forward when all you want to do is go back to safety, that’s what makes you a winner. Every adult decision, be it about quitting a bad habit, about taking a leap into entrepreneurship, or about changing yourself for the better, is easier to make and stick to if you have a support network to rely on. Knowing that there’ll be someone to catch you when you fall will make you a fearless person. #photography #photoshoot #photo #passion #water #live #child #river #coconut #africanstory #africa #blackandwhite #black #blackchild #love #peopleandculture @africanexploring @mtvbaseafrica @afrikrea @africanamazing @africansafaris @african_portraits @afromixx @africamagic @africa_namibia @africanbiohub @meetsouthafrica @africantrendystyles
