Is it really archaeology if you don't have an ancient Land Rover and British military tents from the 1950s? . . . #repost @xinemikeska . . . . . #archaeology #excavation #cyprus #oldschool #landrover #photobomb #fieldwork

One of the ancient water fountains at #pompeii . The #romans really were such an advanced civilisation. You’re not really prepared for the size of the site, it’s not remotely possible to cover it in a day. This was a #bucketlist trip for me, I’d wanted to visit since I was little, and it did not disappoint. #instatravel #italy #archaeology #history #culture #vesuvious #civilisation #travelblogger #seetheworld #adventureisoutthere

İzmir Arkeoloji Müzesi Ekrem Akurgalı Seremik Salonu Bronz heykeller Demeter (Sağda) Tunç Bodrum(Halikarnassos) Hellenistik Dönem M.Ö. 4. yy. Homeros’un destanlarında “güzel saçlı kraliçe” ve “güzel örgülü Demeter” olarak anılan toprak ve bereket tanrıçası Demeter’e ait heykelde, Tanrıça başını hafifçe öne eğmiş durumda gösterilmiştir. Başörtüsü sol omzuna kadar düşmüştür. Göz çukurlarının bir zamanlar irisleri camla gösterilmiş mermer gözbebekleri taşıdığı sanılmaktadır. 1953 yılında Bodrum açıklarında sünger avcıları tarafından denizin 75 metre derinliğinde bulunmuştur. Devrinin tüm özelliklerini yansıtması ve bu boyuttaki eserlerin az rastlanır olması nedeniyle nadir eserlerden biridir Koşan Atlet Heykeli (Ortada) Nemrut Limanı(Kyme) Geç Helenistik M.Ö. 50-30 Ege Denizi’nde Kyme Antik Kenti açıklarında bulunan bu heykel çıplak bir atleti göstermektedir. 1979 yılında İzmir’in Foça ilçesinde balıkçıların ağlarına tesadüfen takılan heykel, İzmir Arkeoloji Müzesi’nde yapılan restorasyon ve konservasyon çalışmaları sonrasında teşhir edilmeye başlanmıştır. As I entered, my ears were muffled by the wind powerfully whistling through the Doric columns. I gazed up in silence and complete awe. A moment later, I felt a presence around me. I sensed as if the ancients were amongst me. My mind and spirit bowed in acknowledgment. I felt welcome. I felt belonging. Upon stepping out of the Parthenon, a strong rush of emotions consumed me. I felt reincarnated through my ancestry. My experience was a testimony to an ancient link—a living heritage—where twenty-four thousand years later a Greek walks amongst the creations of his past carrying the very same ideals in light of reason and grace of beauty. Happy Greek Independence Day to all. We think and feel differently because of what a small Greek town—Athens—did so long ago. #greek #history #travel #athens #greece #traveling #vacation #visiting #beautiful #museum #instatravel #instago #instagood #trip #holiday #photooftheday #fun #tourism #tourist #instapassport #instatraveling #travelgram #travelingram #igtravel #me #europe #guy #summer #athens #archaeology

Giving credit where credit is due: "All Roman culture came from Greece, and respectful copies and adaptations of Greek statues and temples and houses were all that Rome wanted" (Hamilton 135).

This is a wonderful pediment located at the Ta Nei temple 😍 • It is a Buddhist scene featuring a large central figure standing in a boat pointing and traveling towards the left, notice the four men holding oars and the fish underneath... Flying in the sky above are a number of celestial figures holding parasols, a few shooting stars or comets around the place as well... quite interesting... • What does it all mean? Well I’m not entirely sure... but others have suggested that it may represent a scene of the early life of the Buddha or perhaps it’s a Bodhisattva? Opposite to this pediment, just 3 meters away, there is another pediment depicting Buddha’s great departure so perhaps this scene is related to that one? Either way the fact that those flying figures are holding parasols above him means that it’s someone very special... • • • #tanei #angkor #angkorwat #angkorthom #bayon #art #artwork #arthistory #instaart #sculpture #asianart #historyofart #beautiful #style #archaeology #architecture #cambodia #siemreap #khmer #khmerart #apsara #natgeotravel #natgeocreative #lpfanphoto #mythology #culture #travelgram #passionpassport #wanderlust #buddhism

#nationalarchaeologyweek is unearthing finds that haven't seen the light of day for a century. I visited the dig at Brisbane's Toowong Cemetery today to see some fantastic finds. This is a BD.👍 . I'm running several viewsheds for my dissertation, which basically calculate how many times each pixel are seen according to a group of observers. 🚶🚶🚶 . This will help me figure out which structures were the most noticeable. 🔭 From here, I'll start to analyze whether this was intentional, and the cultural significance of such choices. . I'm doing a total approach, where a single observer is placed every 200 meters in my study areas. That's 100k observers for each study area -- and millions of pixels to calculate. 📐 . Running on a normal computer, one computation takes about 450 hours. Power outages means you lose everything (true story). ⏰ . I contacted the Shared Computing Cluster at BU for help. In Holyoke, Ma there is a facility shared by Harvard, BU, and MIT. The system of machines it houses currently includes over 5800 shared CPU cores, over 8700 Buy-in CPU cores, a combined 240,000 GPU cores, and over 4.2 petabytes of storage. Faculty and graduate students can run computationally intensive processes in Linux and finish them in a fraction of the time. . What does this mean for me? 450 hours was reduced to 8. 🙌 . I've said it before, and I'll say it again: make yourself aware of your resources. I knew SCCs were the way to go, but I had no idea BU had one. Oops. Well, I also think they could do a better job advertising 😜 . I'm still glad I've got the data about the first run, because I'll be publishing several technical articles related to data processing in my dissertation. I can provide scholars who lack these resources with an understanding of what they're getting themselves into. . Better for me, I'm able to run several versions of the same analysis, using multiple distances between observers, and will publish the differences between those results. Basically, I'll be able to answer my research questions, and also determine if using significantly more detailed observer coverage is worth the processing time.
