That reddish dot -- it wasn't there before. It's the dot to the upper left of galaxy NGC 4993's center, do you see it? When scanning the large field of possible locations of an optical counterpart to the unprecedented gravitational wave event GW170817 in August, the appearance of this fading dot quickly became of historic importance. It pinpointed GW170817's exact location, thereby enabling humanity's major telescopes to examine the first ever electromagnetic wave counterpart to a gravitational wave event, an event giving strong evidence of being a short gamma-ray burst kilonova, the element-forming explosion that occurs after two neutron stars merge. The featured image of lenticular galaxy NGC 4993 by Hubble shows the fading dot several days after it was discovered. Analyses, continuing, include the physics of the explosion, what heavy elements formed, the similarity of the speeds of gravitational radiation and light, and calibrating a new method for determining the distance scale of our universe. Another shot from Mirror Darkness @lumen_london These pieces are based on the shapes of solar shields of the James Webb space telescope. 😛 Créditos: HypeScience -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #universo #universe #astronomy #astronomia #science #ciencia #sky #céu #eso #natureza🍃 #nature #starstuff #star #estrelas #espaço #space #tsu #instalike #cosmos #galaxy #galaxia #nebulosa #deepspace #profundo #telescope #telescopio #observatorio #planet #observatory #constelação

🔍🌿Quick Fact: In space, metals can fuse together just by touching. This is called cold welding - Welding fuses metals through the use of extreme heat and melting of the metal itself. But in a vacuum - such as space - fusion of two pieces of the same metal can occur simply through touching them together - On Earth, where there is air, metals have an oxide layer covering them and acting barrier. Without this, the atoms inside the metals have no way of knowing that they are different pieces of metal so they freely move between the two pieces and join them together - This has caused issues in the past such as with the Galileo spacecraft which lost use of an entire antenna that wouldn’t open. There are also applications of this phenomenon including working with nanotechnology - 🌿📝 Let us know what you think in the comments! Did you know this? _______________________________________ . . #repost @natgeotravel ・・・ Photo by @babaktafreshi The World at Night photography Mankind came a long way from caves and prehistoric rock art to exploring outerspace. Here the ever lasting rotating sky is captured in an hour-long exposure above a petroglyph showing a hunting scene some 10,000 years ago in Zagros Mountains of Iran. I tribute this image to the winners of 2017 Nobel prize in Physics, announced last week, for a 4-decade effort to detect gravitational waves, first predicted by Einstein a 100 years ago, and finally observed by LIGO project in the US. No one knows how our knowledge of this new form of information and energy transport across the universe will evolve human technology in far future. Some hardly understand how fantasy science ideas of physics and astronomy relates to our daily life. But look around you. Many of the technology we are depending on today is built on top of once-considered obscure science, from Laws of Gravity to Relativity and Quantum Physics. It's an adventurous future ahead of us. 11-24-17 #repost @thehubblescope (@get_repost) ・・・ NGC 7023 . “Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” . Like delicate cosmic petals, these clouds of interstellar dust and gas have blossomed 1,300 light-years away in the fertile star fields of the constellation Cepheus. Sometimes called the Iris Nebula and dutifully cataloged as NGC 7023, this is not the only nebula in the sky to evoke the imagery of flowers. Still, this beautiful digital image shows off the Iris Nebula's range of colors and symmetries in impressive detail. Within the Iris, dusty nebular material surrounds a hot, young star. The dominant color of the brighter reflection nebula is blue, characteristic of dust grains reflecting starlight. Central filaments of the dusty clouds glow with a faint reddish photoluminesence as some dust grains effectively convert the star's invisible ultraviolet radiation to visible red light. Infrared observations indicate that this nebula may contain complex carbon molecules known as PAHs. As shown here, the bright blue portion of the Iris Nebula is about six light-years across. © NASA (APOD) . #amazing #astronomy #beauty #chandra #bible #bibletext #nasabeyond #constellation #creation #galaxy #hubble #hubbletelescope #interstellar #nature #nasa #cosmos #hubblehangout #space #universe #scripture #naturelovers #cosmology #science #hst

Evolution Of The Moon ________________________________________________ 4.6 billion years ago, an object about the size of Mars struck the Earth. This early planet, which has been named Theia, was partially absorbed into the Earth, but a large amount of debris was also sprayed out into space. Gravity pulled the debris into orbit around our planet and, as the numerous fragments collided, they began to clump together. The Moon was formed as these clumps grew larger and larger. . . . #evolution #moon #earth #solarsystem #cosmos #universe #planet #nasa #space #astronomy #science #simulation #visualsoflife #visualization #physics #gravity #history #knowledge #knowledgeispower #facts #time #breathtaking #spiritual #lightuponlight #godisgreat #cinema4d #c4d #motiongraphics #motiondesign #videooftheday

Two months ago Cassini made its fatal plunge into Saturn’s atmosphere, ending a 13-year-long orbit of exploration and scientific discoveries. The images we received from the spacecraft throughout the years were beyond spectacular and the mission’s final moments touched us all very deeply. Cassini photos are still my personal favorites, and I will keep sharing them as a tribute, on the page. From NASA: Tiny Tethys Tethys may not be tiny by normal standards, but when it is captured alongside Saturn, it can't help but seem pretty small. Even Saturn's rings appear to dwarf Tethys (660 miles, or 1,062 kilometers across), which is in the upper left of the image, although scientists believe the moon to be many times more massive than the entire ring system combined. This view looks toward the unilluminated side of the rings from about 18 degrees below the ringplane.
