China's 'artificial sun' reaches 100 million degrees Celsius marking milestone for nuclear fusion Chinese nuclear scientists have reached an important milestone in the global quest to harness energy from nuclear fusion, a process that occurs naturally in the sun. The team of scientists from China's Institute of Plasma Physics announced this week that plasma in their Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) — dubbed the "artificial sun" — reached a whopping 100 million degrees Celsius, temperature required to maintain a fusion reaction that produces more power than it takes to run. To put that in perspective, the temperature at the core of the sun is said to be about 15 million degrees Celsius, making the plasma in China's "artificial sun" more than six times hotter than the original. The news comes after China shocked the science community last month with plans to launch an "artificial moon" bright enough to replace city streetlights by 2020. Messier 71 Follow @_starstuff_ for more daily space content! 🌌 Describe M71 in 3 words! 👇 · M71 is located roughly 13,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Sagitta. Because M71 does not seem to have a high concentration of stars at its center, and because the elemental composition of the stars it contains suggests that they are younger than most globular clusters, M71 was initially believed to be an open cluster. In the 1970s, M71 was reclassified as a young, loosely concentrated globular cluster — one of the smallest of its kind. · Source: https://www.nasa.gov Image credits: ESA/Hubble and NASA

Day 10. 10 books, 10 days. Books that had an impact on me. No explanation, just the cover. This has been fun, and there’s so much I’ve wanted to say about each of these books because every single one of them is a masterpiece and I can’t recommend them enough. Thanks for checking these out, these past 10 days. #michiokaku #physics #science #technology #space #astrophysics #nanotechnology #cloning #evolution #book #bookstagram #reading

One division of NASA is currently experimenting with what they believe could be the future of spacecraft propulsion. Scientists at NASA’s Eagleworks Laboratories have been building and testing the EmDrive - an electromagnetic rocket engine that doesn’t require fuel. The physics-defying contraption produces thrust by bouncing microwaves off one another utilizing magnetic fields. Although highly controversial, NASA and other research groups believe this method could help revolutionize space travel. - - - - - ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ 🥂 From @innovation_twt ⠀ #cosmology #deepspace #hubble #spaceman #constellation #spaceexploration #outerspace #spaceart #spacex #universe #astrophysics #solarsystem #galaxy #cosmonaut #astronomer #spaceship #galaxies #stargazing #interstellar #celestron -------- Follow @@lostastronautjuice -------- Credits @barbies330

I rarely do planetary photography as it requires a completely different technique compared to deep sky nebulas and galaxies. Lengthy exposures with reduction lenses are replaced with high frame rates and long focal lengths to capture the small, but very luminous objects in the solar system. From northern latitudes, Saturn is for many years to come extremely low in sky and visible only in a small time window at this time of the year. I had to use the opportunity as I have actually never seen the ring planet before! This photo was taken at the maximum altitude, which is just 5-6 degrees over the horizon. Thus, it is almost impossible to get a clear picture due to the unstable atmosphere. The planet was seen by a 200mm SCT telescope with a 133x magnification. A stack of 3700 frames captured by a Canon camera using BackyardEOS software reading images from the live view function of the camera. Registax was used to create the final image. #saturn #planetaryphoto #planet #solarsystem #registax #backyardeos #astrophotography #telescope #astrophoto #spacetravel #nebula #astronomy #astrophoto #astronomyphotography #urbanastro #astronomynerd #nightsky #astronomer #astrophysics #nightscape #astrobackyard #spacepics #astropics #keeplookingup #ig_astrophotography #ig_nightphotography #starrysky #astronomer #longexposure

Science is too often thought of as a collection of facts. When asked to define the word ‘science’, some individuals seem to immediately break it down into a few major disciplines (chemistry, physics, geology, etc.) and offer a handful of the major concepts taught to them in the past. They define science by the theories that it created. In reality, science goes far beyond being a set of facts. It is a tool. Seeing science as a tool will open your eyes to its potential. As opposed to a jumble of facts, a tool is something that you can use, no matter who you are! Science is the most valuable tool we have. Ultimately, it is science that will make the world a better place to live in, it is science that will relieve poverty, and it is scientific knowledge that will allow us to understand how the universe works. Maybe it is time that, if we really want to understand this planet we live on, what makes mountains, what drives climate, and how the earth works, we devote more of our efforts and resources into funding the science that will ultimately tell us. Some of Hubble's most stunning images reveal galaxies in distress. Many of them are in the throes of a gravitational encounter with another galaxy. The photos show perfect pinwheel patterns stretched and pulled into irregular shapes. Streamers of gas and dust flow from galaxies into space. And in this chaos, batches of young, blue stars glow like tree lights, fueled by the dust and gas kicked up by the galactic encounter. For some galaxies, the powerful meeting with a passing galaxy will eventually end in mergers. But hidden from view deep inside the dusty cores of these merging galaxies is the slow dance of their supermassive black holes toward an eventual union. Visible light cannot penetrate these shrouded central regions. X-ray data, however, have detected the black-hole courtship. And now astronomers analyzing near-infrared images from sharp-eyed Hubble and the Keck Observatory in Hawaii are offering the best view yet of close pairs of black holes as they move slowly toward each other. The study is the largest survey of the cores of nearby galaxies in near-infrared light. The Hubble observations represent over 20 years' worth of snapshots from its vast archive. The survey targeted galaxies residing an average distance of 330 million light-years from Earth. The census helps astronomers confirm computer simulations showing that black holes grow faster during the last 10 million to 20 million years of the galactic merger. The Hubble and Keck Observatory images captured close-up views of this final stage, when the bulked-up black holes are only about 3,000 light-years apart — a near-embrace in cosmic terms. The study shows that galaxy encounters are important for astronomers' understanding of how black holes became so monstrously big. For more information, follow the link in our bio. Scientific visualization of a star forming Spiral Galaxy, a few million years after the big bang! 🔭 🌌 Formation of a massive "late-type", star-forming disk galaxy: an individual system is tracked through time, and its stellar light is shown in a 500 kilo-parsec region. This galaxy exhibits rapid ongoing star formation in an extended, clumpy disk, until it experiences a late-time merger with a nearly equal mass companion. The IllustrisTNG project is a suite of state-of-the-art cosmological galaxy formation simulations. Each simulation in IllustrisTNG evolves a large swath of a mock Universe from soon after the Big-Bang until the present day while taking into account a wide range of physical processes that drive galaxy formation. The simulations can be used to study a broad range of topics surrounding how the Universe — and the galaxies within it — evolved over time. Spiral Galaxy NGC 1300 🌀 . Big, beautiful, barred spiral galaxy NGC 1300 lies some 70 million light-years away on the banks of the constellation Eridanus. This Hubble Space Telescope composite view of the gorgeous island universe is one of the largest Hubble images ever made of a complete galaxy. NGC 1300 spans over 100,000 light-years and the Hubble image reveals striking details of the galaxy's dominant central bar and majestic spiral arms. In fact, on close inspection the nucleus of this classic barred spiral itself shows a remarkable region of spiral structure about 3,000 light-years across. Like other spiral galaxies, including our own Milky Way, NGC 1300 is thought to have a supermassive central black hole.🌑✨♥️ . . .
