Here’s why: The landmine split jerk can help teach full body explosiveness to those who don’t feel comfortable with the bar overhead in a traditional jerk but produce similar benefits. It also allows us to work on unilateral training by snapping into the split/lunge position during the catch. Overall, this can be a nice bridge to teaching true overhead barbell lifts. - Here’s how: - Start with the barbell in the front rack position with your wrist straight and knuckles facing up. Hand close to your shoulder. - To start the lift, bend your knees to produce force from the ground. Drive upward through your ankles, knees and hips to create momentum from the floor up. - Using the momentum from the ground, press the bar up and slightly forward off while snap into the split lunge position. - Land with your feet apart shoulder width apart horizontally(from the side) and a full stride length apart laterally (front to back). - Pressing arm should have selfie fully extended and arm should be close to your ear all while maintaining a neutral (straight) spine. - Step the back foot forward to the starting position, reset and repeat! . Day 7 - Road to 250k Challenge . A week in and so much as happened, and sadly I’m not even referring to results. . Life. Life has happened. Health related I got an interesting assessment done identifying some digestion issues requiring a heavy change in my nutrition. I’m also needed to do a rigorous cleanse. . I think this is a really good and unfortunate reminder of how far I’ve left myself go. The gym is one thing but health and nutrition slipped the most and as a result I now have to change a great deal of what I eat. . At any rate, tomorrow is the start of week 2 and though my initial fitness goal may need to take a back seat, my mindset and nutrition take precedence. . Let’s keep this going everyone. 7 days strong!

This classic (2002) text by prominent psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (try and say that!- chick-sent-meehayee) was a highly influential book for me in developing my rehabilitation and Back to Roots experiences. Csikszentmihalyi coined the term we call flow; that state of being so immersed in what ever one does, that nothing else matters. Through decades of psychology research, it has been shown that those who find flow more often, in more aspects of life report a better quality of life; more happiness. The website Flowskills.com summarised 8 key characteristics of successfully finding flow, and were as follows; 1. CLARITY OF GOALS & IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK 2. A HIGH LEVEL OF CONCENTRATION ON A LIMITED FIELD 3. BALANCE BETWEEN SKILLS & CHALLENGE *This point is demonstrated in the graph above and is ultimately the goal of how we pitch movement / exercise / task prescription / learning music / language / LEARN ANYTHING 4. THE FEELING OF CONTROL 5. EFFORTLESSNESS 6. AN ALTERED PERCEPTION OF TIME *what is it that you get lost in? Walking, singing, rugby, telling stories.... 7. THE MELTING TOGETHER OF ACTION AND CONSCIOUSNESS 8. THE AUTOTELIC QUALITY OF FLOW EXPERIENCE *point 8 is worth special highlight, the word auto - taken from Greek means self and Telos means goal. Not only achieving the goal of an activity is rewarding but the activity itself is fulfilling. Flow is therefore an immediate ROI (return on interest). The book is a nice read and I encourage you to read it and challenge yourself to understand where you find flow (also a nice audible version). If you identify it, are you actually doing that activity daily? On your job? In your family? In your training?
