If you want it, you got to work for it 💪🏼 and that’s what we did this morning!! Week 6 Back and Biceps 💪🏼 are done! Only 2 more workout days left of this week and then we start our final 2 weeks! It’s crazy how fast this program has truly flown by!! ONLY 4 days a WEEK, around 30 mins a day, for 8 WEEKS ONLY 👊🏼 and @joelfreemanfitness definitely has kept us going this whole time! GET THE BASICS RIGHT #6 – DEADLIFTS Deadlifts are a fantastic compound exercise that will build a solid, stable posterior chain working the glutes, hamstrings and lower back together. • They tend to be a staple in any training program now but often get taught and performed incorrectly. • Deadlifting with good form will get you strong AF. There’s no doubt about that. However, bad form when deadlifting is going to almost guarantee injury at some point. • Some people think of deadlifting as simply picking a bar up off the floor but there are way more factors to consider when deadlifting to ensure a safe, effective movement. Here are some of the major don’ts… • ❌ #1 – ROUNDING THE BACK • A neutral spine is key in pretty much any movement we perform in the gym. When deadlifting, it’s important we engage and lock in those lats, keeping the chest lifted with the shoulder blades retracted and depressed throughout. • This is common nearer the floor. If you break your form near the bottom of the lift then it could simply be a mobility issue. Try deadlifting from a raised platform such as some steps or blocks to build strength in the hip hinge position. • ❌ #2 - HIPS SHOOTING UP FIRST • It’s really important to ensure we keep the angle of the upper body when initiating the deadlift. Raising the hips first and extending the legs pretty much takes the lower body out of the movement completely, shifting almost all the load on to the lower back. • The 3 main muscles we’re training when deadlifting are the glutes, the hamstrings and the lower back which we can only work simultaneously by mastering the hip hinge pattern effectively. • ❌ #3 – HYPEREXTENDING AT THE TOP • This is kind of an old school “bro” approach to deadlifting, getting that additional “squeeze” on the lower back at the top. • It’s completely unnecessary and over time will put too much stress on the lower back ultimately causing injury. The movement should be finished at the top, standing upright and not leaning back. Ever tried this? . Lat pulldowns with seperate grips, supinating your grip on your way down. It’s a good way to get some more bicep activation and a little bit more range of motion. . Doing them unilaterally gives you an opportunity to learn to brace your core as well. . Let me know if you’ve ever done these or plan to try them out!
