Also a free workout below👇 - Lat Pulldowns⬇️ - Probably my favorite back movement, I like to mix things up with attachments to hit different areas of the back. Firstly starting with a tight position in the seat, I do this by sitting back slightly and pushing my thighs up into the pads hard. Unilateral Dumbbell Row Tips . Unilateral exercises are great. They help us strengthen different sides independently and they also help expose our weak points that exercises that use both sides such as barbells, fixed machines cannot . You might find that when you do certain exercises, movement on one side feels smoother than the other. This is quite normal, because we all have unique muscle imbalances from lifestyle, habits, sports, posture e.g. how we sit, sleep, stand etc . Personally, when I row I have better control on my left side than my right side. (Tighter anterior delt and pec muscles on the right side of my body) And less strength, muscle connection and practice on the pulling muscles that need to be strengthened . So, the unilateral row is a great exercise to help bring awareness to those imbalances and to work on strengthening each side independently . Some common mistakes Swipe : (rounded upper back and swinging the elbows up Double swipe :Using the bicep, hammer curl style vs rowing with the Lat muscle . Your goal should be to move the actual joint and use the actual muscles you’re trying to develop . Technique Tips . > Lock your upper and lower back: When rowing set them in place, you don’t want to be hinging your upper and lower back throughout the movement. Or, if you’re upper back is very rounded you’re working other muscles like your trapz more which is not what we’re going for here . > Once, you’re upper and lower back is set in place think about allowing your shoulder blades to glide to the front on the eccentric or lowering phase, and then retract them on the concentric phase . > Get the elbow to about 90 degrees and finish the rest of the movement by squeezing your shoulder blade. Another way to think about this is Lead with the elbow and finish with squeezing the shoulder - If you row to far with the elbow you are putting your shoulder at risk of injury. So, row till your elbow is 90 degrees lock it out and finish by retracting/squeezing the shoulder blades . > Use a weight that will allow you to maintain good form. Leave the jerking heavyweight motions to the more advanced trainee’s . Continued in the comments
