Thought I’d share about starting maintenance, which I did two weeks ago, adding a 1/2 grain to breakfast. On a Bright Lifers coaching call this past Monday, it was decided that I’d also add a 1/2 protein at dinner. The coach then recommended that I start weighing daily. 😱 • I freaked out. 😩😜😝 • I have had a horrendous relationship with the scale and had settled into a cozy place, of weighing once week. 😍 • I was so worried that a daily date with the scale was going to mess with me. ⚖️😧 • But I accepted the challenge and after a few days I can honestly say that my attachment to the number is waning. And it has been helpful to have my finger closer to the pulse of how my body is adapting to maintenance. ✔️✔️✔️ • I’m suspecting my goal range will be 128-133, and I’m closing in on that. 🎯 • One of the things that I adore about #brightlineeating is how it speaks to maintenance. That it’s something you slowly glide into, and that it’s a 5# range that you dance with, not one static, rigid number. 💃🏻🕺🏼 • I have so much gratitude for this lifestyle! I never ever ever thought I’d be in the 130s, let alone looking at 128 as a realistic number for my body. 🙏🏼💙 • So please know you can do this! Yes, YOU! 💪 It truly works if you work it. Simple lunch with a bit of preparation: 1. Bake some beets in advance so they're ready to use (refrigerate or freeze them for later use). Or plan to use other veggies -- as you wish. 2. Salt and pepper some boneless, skinless chicken and put some balsamic vinegar on it; set it in the fridge to marinate as long as possible (up to 24 hr). Maybe 30 min before time to eat: 3. Start heating a skillet to medium high and put a few drops of toasted sesame oil and maybe 2 tsp (max!) butter or other oil per serving in skillet to heat. 4. Using gluten-/grain-/ and flour-free breadcrumbs with maybe salt, garlic and ginger (spice to your taste), coat the chicken. Once the butter's good and hot (test by flicking a bit of breading into skillet), add chicken and cook. 5. Meanwhile, prep the asparagus and boil water under steamer. Once water boils, add the asparagus spears and watch carefully so they don't overcook. 6. WHEN YOU MESS UP AND EAT ALL THE DONUTS, DO YOU USE THAT EXPERIENCE TO SHAME YOURSELF AND 100% AVOID DONUTS FROM NOW ON OR DO YOU LEARN FROM THE EXPERIENCE? . . Just finished teaching my student Wendy in China. She practices English with me for 25 minutes a day online. (Msg me for more info.) . . Wendy was working on naming the first four months of the year + matching with the ordinal number. “January is the first month of the year. February is the second month of the year.” The word “month” was really tricky for her, and she kept saying “marth" over and over again. . . Then she started avoiding “month” because she knew she it wasn’t coming right. “January is the first. February is the second.” . . My reaction could be to shame her. “OMG. Get it right! What’s wrong with you?” But even you reading this knows that would be an awful reaction to a student in a learning situation. . . So I was gentle and kind. I didn’t let her avoid saying the word “month” because it IS what she needed to practice today. So I congratulated her when she again attempted the word. . . Oftentimes, we reserve “gentle and kind” for other people learning things but not for ourselves. For some reason, we think shaming ourselves will help us learn something better, but all shaming does is break a relationship and drive us to doing and saying not so kind things. Had I shamed my student, do you think she would have been excited to return back to class next time? . . When we are learning to eat moderately, we may think it will go perfectly. We should know how to eat 1 donut w/o 12 and if we do eat 12, we say, “This is why I have to follow a perfect meal plan. I can't have sweets. I have to go back to Whole30.” #whole30casualty . . We might avoid the donuts so we don’t even have to deal with the fact that we might mess up! But it’s the practicing --> learning. If we completely avoid donuts, we will never know how to have 1. We will only know how to have 0 or 12. . . So this weekend, as you are practicing your version of #imperfecteating, be kind and gentle to yourself. Use the tools from Imperfect Eating.
