One of my most favourite ever fighters was Igor Vovchanchyn. It was surreal how this small Ukrainian heavyweight won against much larger and heavier opponents. Especially his looping hooks caught my attention. Fedor also incorporated them and it took some years until I recognised that these punches are also a big part of systemas ballistic punches. Did you guys see it? A left hook body he sneaks In on the roll. Sneaky sneaky. I encourage it, if there is a space, an opening, or a place where you can get a shot in and not take too big of a risk. Take it!!! Good Defensive boxing is about doing damage while mitigating risk. If your feet are not moving and you plant you might not be boxing. You have to move but move logically. You have to be defensive but, be defensive with your movements. Don’t cower away with head movement, use it to set up a big punch or punch off of it. When you step right or left do something, get creative, that is the fun part of boxing!!! Transition much? A lot of people seek advice. I loath it for the most part, for one reason. It cherry pics easily identifiable actions or metrics, and it totally neglects that elusive in-between. You know, the transitions. In martial arts we could consider footwork something that specifically looks at that part of the equation, and surprise, very few people put the time in to learn their angles, shuffles, and blitzes. Why? Cause it’s hard, thankless work. Nobody notices it. We all see the knockout punch of kick. We almost never look down to see how it was set up. Yes, this is a metaphor. Business is hard. Life is hard. Love is hard. The things that people advise you on are the broad brush strokes. But it’s up to you and me to make that shit work...and the secret sauce isn’t only in mastering techniques, but in understanding transitions. How we stand. How we breathe. How we audit our time and structure our days to make sure we’re doing something meaningful every day. Most often the people at the top have no idea how they really got there. They think they do. And they teach that. But luck, resources, relationships, all play a part. Perhaps most importantly, grit. The willingness to fight and fail. And the ability to breathe, be present to the pain, and sensitive to opportunity. 📌 @sean.seif first session, working on fundamentals from DAY ONE. We're learning to throw the straight punches, I don't progress my clients until we nail the straight punches. That means hand coming back, no pawing but going straight back, elbows in. While we're working on these basics, I am making sure Sean is already thinking about an opponent. We're slipping, we're moving as we punch. Footwork is king in the ring. Whether you're looking to get in the ring, or just get cardio in, I want all my clients to walk away with functional, practical boxing knowledge. . ✅Get back to the basics with this footwork drill. Next time you're shadow boxing, throw a combination, then MOVE. Learn to find and set your base again after movement. Have you been practicing your fancy FOOTWORK? 👣👣 . . Last week, anterior- posterior ⬆️⬇️ FOOTWORK was our focus (catch up if you missed it)...but this week it is all about Lateral FOOTWORK!! That is right➡️...well and left⬅️ (see what I did there?!...😉) . . ❓ FOOTWORK: General rule of thumb in the sport of boxing is whatever direction you want to move, you lead with that foot first while in boxing stance. In this case to move right, step the right foot first then...recover the left foot to maintain boxing stance. . . 📌Drill Objective: To incorporate lateral FOOTWORK and a defensive action while maintaining boxing stance. . . 🧐👇 Try it out! ▪Round 1: Establish a baseline combo that incorporates lateral movement. . .
