It’s #worldmilkday today? This little one decided to stop breast feeding at the same time as weaning. She had become really restless during feeding and needed total quiet to avoid distraction which wasn’t easy with a toddler in the house too. She also hated a bottle and would only really tolerate one when fast asleep as a dream feed. Food was much more her thing and remains so. To ensure that she got her calcium she would have yogurt, porridge with milk (expressed or formula), cottage cheese, cheese triangles, cheese sauce, broccoli, kale and sardines mashed with cream cheese on toast. Luckily she happily ate lots of fruit, veg, fish and eggs which provided her with the extra vitamin K and D which help with calcium absorption. Drinking enough liquid was another matter entirely and we had to keep changing her cups to make drinking water fun (this trick still works today!). Once my reusable pouches had been developed these made serving her yogurts so much easier and she would also drink water from them in copious amounts. #milkstruggles #weaning #reusablefoodpouches #calciumrichfoods #drinkingwater #feedingstruggles

People who eat dairy for calcium 😂😂😂😂😂 . Honestly, this is one of the major objections I hear...and people who know nothing about nutrition will say “You need milk for strong bones, and it’s dangerous for children to live on a plant-based diet” 🤪So how does the calcium get into cows milk then? Is it magically appearing there? Or perhaps it’s because they eat green stuff all day (which is where calcium actually comes from). . A huge study found that those who ate the least dairy had the strongest bones and vice versa. You need magnesium for strong bones too, and fortunately all the nice plant-based calcium sources come neatly wrapped up with magnesium. Pretty sure Mother Nature knows what she’s doing here. Calcium is the one supplement that any decent plant-based nutritionalist or Doctor will tell you to avoid since it can calcify in the arteries and cause heart attacks at worst, and arthritis at best. Tender Bottle Gourd Leaves Stir Fried With Potatoes. . . . . When it comes to eating leafy veggies, my husband tranforms into one lil' grumpy kid, and I always have to go that extra mile to add some twists to my greens, ultimately diminishing the glory of a simple powerfact meal 😶😶 However there's this one leafy veg that does the magic, and my husband's ever rebellious anti green tastebuds goes for a happy second serving most of the times 😉😉😉 . . . Tender Bottle Gourd leaves, owing to its unique flavour, texture and most importantly due to its perfect concoction with various other delicious ingredients such as posto, pumkin seeds, besan and even eggs, makes for a 'happy leafy' meal for me 😊😊 . I have kept it simple this time, and just paired it up with some potatoes and stir fried it in mustard oil. I had tempered the oil with onion seeds, chopped garlic and red chillies. To that I had added some sliced onions and when translucent, I added the potatoes first, cooked it on medium heat for around 5mins , followed by the coarsely chopped leaves and cooked it on medium heat for another 10 mins aporox. This was followed by grated ginger when the veggies were about to be done, and cooked it low heat for approximately 2 more mins :).
