Do you like sardines? How do you prepare them? . . If you don’t like them or don’t think you like then would you try them because they are so incredibly good for you? . . Lately I have been eating them almost every single day. School reopened today after spring break.. In Nila's sb are cantaloupe balls , jaggery sweetened sesame seeds & coconut stuffed string hoppers.. I usually stock washed, dried and popped black sesame seeds for instant uses.. Pulse few sesame seeds, add to ghee-fried coconut and filtered jaggery syrup.. Sauté till it reaches pooranam(not so tight) consistency.. Squeeze normal idiyappam using rice or Millet flour , add some stuffing on it and just close it, slightly touch to seal the edges.. Squeeze it on banana leaf or butter paper or just on wet idli cloth so that u can close it easily without touching the dough.. Steam for 10 mins and that's it.. I've recently started to focus on getting enough calcium in my diet. I have a history of under-eating with severe calorie restriction and although I've overcome that fear based lifestyle, it's not without its consequences. I've been learning more recently about how eating disorders in your teens and twenties can be very detrimental to your bone health. I haven't had a bone scan but I imagine my bones could use some extra help because of my years of under-eating. Many people believe you have to consume dairy to get enough calcium. I assure you that's not the case! Calcium is abundant in many plant foods such as dark leafy greens (kale, bok choy, collards) and many nuts and seeds such as sesame seeds. The RDA for calcium is 1000mg. I've been having this breakfast bowl the past couple of days and it gives me over 300mg of calcium! I'm well on my way. The bowl includes Brussels sprouts, either kale or bok choy, cooked oats (savory oats are so good!), lentils, carrots, wakame seaweed, and a delicious miso tahini (ground sesame seeds) dressing. . Bone health . So, this isn’t worrying at all 🤦🏽‍♀️ I got a bone density scan & I have osteopenia (at age 31). Feeling overwhelmed, feeling out of control, realising there’s more at play here, than just a missing menses... . I knew it was a risk factor - not having a cycle since June 2015, my hormone levels are all base line. Estrogen in particular, plays a critical role in bone health . The solution? I.need.to.get.my.cycle.back. Rebalance my hormones; get my flow back on 🤞🏾 . In the meantime, I gotta up the ante with calcium-rich foods & begin weight bearing / bone building exercises. Any other suggestions welcome 💪🏾 . So for any cysters out there experiencing amenorrhea, it might be worth enquiring about getting a bone density scan with your practitioner. Knowledge is power & gives us the opportunity to make positive tweaks & changes to better stack the odds in our favour ✨
