#repost @catholicconnect • • • • • Oh glorious patriarc St. Joseph, who merited to be called "just' by the Holy Ghost, I urgently recommend to the soul of our atheist brothers and sisters, which Jesus redeemed at the price of his precious blood. Thou knowest how deplorable is the state and how unhappy the life of those who have banished this loving savior from their hearts, and how greatly they are exposed to the danger of losing him eternally. Permit not, I beseech thee, that a soul so dear to me should continue any longer in its evil ways; preserve it from the danger that threatens it; touch the heart of the prodigal child and conduct him back to the bosom of the fondest of fathers. Abandon him not, I implore thee, till thou hast opened to him the gates of the heavenly city, where he will praise and bless thee throughout eternity for the happiness which he will owe to thy powerful intercession. Amen. Pic: @ascensionpress #catholicconnect #praytherosary #catholicconvert #catholicconverts #catholic #catholicism #pray

I found this hefty biography of Dame Edith Sitwell lying neglected so I borrowed it. The picture to the left is the biography, to the right is the good Lady. As with any book, one skims through the pages, reading here and there before deciding upon reading it. I have decided to read it, yet in my skimming I came across, quite fortunately, the account of her conversion. Now, my interest in Dame Edith is not based on her poetry, as I know so little of it; her interest is derivative of my interest in the colourful South African poet Roy Campbell. Lady Sitwell was a good friend of Roy and his wife Mary, as well as being an admirer of the poetry of Roy, an admiration that she shared with TS Eliot and Dylan Thomas (himself a protégé of Sitwell). Lady Sitwell wrote to the Campbells asking them to be her Godparents- the Campbells were living in Spain or Portugal at this time, I forget which exactly. Upon reading the letter, Roy, himself a fervent convert, burst into tears- and he was no softy. Alas, they could not be present, so Evelyn Waugh stood in as proxy. Waugh was also a convert, though perhaps less fervent than Roy, but just as sincere all the same. Now I have often heard the anecdote that at a dinner party Waugh was accused by some lady of being a terrible person. She asked how he, a Catholic, could be so terrible? To which Waugh dryly responded "Madame, just imagine if I were not a Catholic" or something to that effect. As an anecdote, it is rather good, but I fear it is not true. Or rather is an elaboration on the truth. I say this, for in the above mentioned biography I read that Waugh wrote a letter to Lady Sitwell, I cannot recall whether it was around this time or some years before (it appears Lady Sitwell had long toyed with Catholicism) where he says of himself that he is a terrible person, but that he knows without the Faith he would be worse. Less witty in such a context perhaps, but certainly more profound. I will try take a photo of the paragraph in question at some stage. #edithsitwell #biography #evelynwaugh #roycampbell #poetry #poets #literature #literary #anecdote #catholicism #catholic #converts #catholicconverts #culture #manofletters

My copy arrived in the post this morning! The Rev. Canon John Gray was a fascinating man, the type of the poet of the 1890's and the English Decadents. Wilde's friend before Lord Douglas appeared on the scene; Wilde apparently based his book 'The Portrait of Dorian Gray' on John Gray, which Gray did little to discourage when rumours abounded. Their friendship came to an end in 1893. John went to Rome and was Ordained a priest in 1901, then spent the rest of his life in Edinburgh. He worked for a while in St Patrick's Church, in the Cowgate. Afterwards he had built and then became Parish Priest of the beautiful St Peter's in Morningside, in the affluent Southern suburbs of Edinburgh. A fine and original writer of poetry and prose, Canon Gray was a fascinating, though now little know character. An original and complex personality, who was a devout priest but certainly suffered in that role. I am looking forward to learning more about him. But I shall have to read Wilde's 'The Portrait of Dorian Gray' first, just to set the mode, Dorian as it were. #johngray #oscarwilde #brocardsewell #catholic #romancatholic #converts #catholicconverts #doriangray #priest #edinburgh #biography #literature #literary #poets #poetry #englishdecadence #books #manofletters #culture #1890s #post #bibliophile

I knew I had forgotten it! Two days ago, that is the 22 of September, was the anniversary of the reception into the Church of the Right Reverend Monsignor Ronald Knox. He was received into the Faith on that day in 1917, auspicious year for you Fatima enthusiasts. Upon making a retreat at Farnborough Abbey, he decided to take the plunge; the Father Abbot of Farnborough, Abbot Oswald (Sir David Hunter-Blair and himself a convert) received him. Abbot Oswald was a friend of Oscar Wilde and vainly tried to convince Wilde to become a Catholic. It was he who paid for Wilde to go to Rome from his winnings at the tables of Monaco...obviously before his monastic days. The two had studied together at Magdalen College, Oxford. But I digress. I am a huge Knox fan- one ought not to die before having read his masterpiece 'Enthusiasm' as well as his delightful 'Literary Distractions'. A profound man of God and man of Letters, with a sparkling wit and the manners of a gentleman, Monsignor Knox was a jewel and an ornament to the Catholic priesthood. May he rest in peace. "Mary of Holyrood may smile indeed, Knowing what grim historic shade it shocks To see wit, laughter and the Popish creed, Cluster and sparkle in the name of Knox." G. K. I finished Sewell's 'Black Swans' book the other day. He had a delightful piece on Olive Custance, whom he calls a great "fin de siècle" poetess of the English Decadence; great but alas so little known. She married Lord Alfred Douglas, of Oscar Wilde fame, or rather, infamy. In her earlier years she flirted with 'Sapphic' poetesses and their poetry, and was infatuated with the quintessential poet of the English Decadence- John Gray, who had inspired the character of Dorian Gray in Wilde's book of that title. Gray was later to become a devout and holy priest of the Archdiocese of Edinburgh.Olive's marriage to Lord Douglas was happy for a short while, but like all things poetical, doomed to disaster. She became a Catholic some years later than her husband; lapsed fairly quickly and returned a few months before her death, to her regret. A tragic figure, and rather typical of the colourful characters of the English Decadence, many of whom became Catholic. Here is a beautiful example of one of her more decadent toned poems: The Masquerade: Masked dancers in the Dance of life  We move sedately ... wearily together, Afraid to show a sign of inward strife, We hold our souls in tether. We dance with proud and smiling lips, With frank appealing eyes, with shy hands clinging. We sing, and few will question if there slips A sob into our singing. Each has a certain step to learn; Our prisoned feet move staidly in set paces, And to and fro we pass, since life is stern, Patiently, with masked faces. Yet some there are who will not dance, They sit apart most sorrowful and splendid, But all the rest trip on as in a trance, Until the Dance is ended. #poetry #poems #literature #olivecustance #lordalfreddouglas #oscarwilde #johngray #decadence #englishdecadence #brocardsewell #catholic #catholicconverts #findesiecle #manofletters #culture

"When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home." It's finished! 🙌 I've wanted a dedicated altar/prayer corner space for a while. My rosaries and prayer books somehow ALWAYS wind up scattered across our apartment, which means prayer time always starts with an annoying scavenger hunt. Most of my "Catholic stuff" (my main rosary, saints cards, and book of prayers) came from my grandmother who recently passed away. She was a lifelong Catholic and began giving these items over the years after I converted. (side note: Can we talk about the beauty of women passing on traditions to their female descendants? My favorite thing about being Catholic is how just intensely female my religious experience has become. Anyway...) After a scare where I thought I'd lost my grandmother's chaplet (it was in my OTHER purse. It's always the other purse) I decided it was finally time to give these things a home. 🏡 Anything big was quickly ruled out since my husband and I both work out of our apartment. Space is fought over constantly and, when necessary, ferociously. Most often I wind up praying or reading on My Side of the Couch and I just thought it would be nice to have a cup holder for my rosaries on the wall. Badabing. Badaboom. 👍 So, all that to say... here's the thing I made.
