I've had this picture on my phone for a couple of weeks now, and feel I should post it. Why? Because otherwise why did I take it in the first place? Does the world need to see me in another extreme ankle-catching backend? Probably not. But social media has its own kind of self-full filling logic. Once you've done the posture and taken the picture you're left with the question of why you did it in the first place. I'm working under the assumption that I'm not a serial narcissist and that posting pictures of me in yoga postures isn't purely my participation in selfie culture. I'm hoping to increase the size of the yoga pool. - This is the far end of yoga practice, not necessarily your everyday kind of thing, unless you practice everyday with this kind of thing in your sights. Sometimes I wonder whether posting this kind of picture will have the opposite effect from the intention of posting it. Will it put people off yoga? It's not a simple answer: if you don't have it in your sights it might seem so extreme that you'd dismiss it as an impossibility, as contortionism or dangerous or useless hyper-mobility. If it's part of your idea of what's possible, it might give you a nudge to do your daily back bending. - Why do you post pictures of yoga on Instagram? Woah! Day 18 of #kapotasanarules, wheel pose with the chest pressing into the wall. It’s called a peak pose with good reason! This was super intense!! I tried both ways of coming into the pose, bending back and walking my hands down the wall as well as coming into wheel from the floor. I found it easier from the floor. That said, bringing my chest completely again the wall was a no-go. Whole face, no problem. Chin, no problem. Chest, nope! Me nearly 6 years ago practicing Full Wheel with one leg outstretched. I originally learnt the basis of this pose to be Urdhva Dhanurasana (Upward Facing Bow) but more recently learnt it is also called Chakrasana (Chakra pose). Just like the name suggests, this pose lights up and energises all of our chakras. Pretty neat huh? In Traditional Chinese Medicine and Yoga, the spine is very important energetically speaking. So anytime we are energising our entire spine, we are also activating our entire energy system. Lifting the leg safely involves a little ham-string flexibility and a lot of glute strength (to protect low back). This pose is going to look different for everyone because everyones bone shapes and spine structures are different. For some people the shape of the full pose will more resemble a "coffee table" then a bow and there is absolutely nothing wrong with this! Backbends are incredibly energising and uplifting. Metaphysically they help us overcome fears.
