(Part 3) The tale of "The Old Man Under The Moon" (月下老人) originated from a story in The Sequel to the Collection of Mysteries - Inn Of Marriage Engagement (续玄怪录·定婚店), a book of mythology from the Tang Dynasty, by Li Fu Yan (李复言). old man under the moon, 月下老人, commonly known as Yue Lao,月老, is a Chinese deity in charged of marriage between man and woman. Yue Lao will help You find a suitable life partner whom You will love, and who will love You dearly, and tie the knot for a ever lasting happy marriage. #tyfun #gaiagroup #hkrestaurants #eeeeeats #instafood #foodporn #foodie #hkfood #hkfoodie #travelgram #foodblogger #topictybites #hkfoodblog #dimsum #chinesecusine #hongkong #tea #chinesetea #chineseculture

Good morning #shanghai 🌹

The character 山 is a literal symbol representing a mountain with three peaks. While immense, beautiful mountains grace the country's entire topography, few stand out quite as prominently as China's 4 holy Buddhist mountains -- 五台山(Wǔtái), 普陀山(Pǔtuó), 峨眉山(Éméi), and 九华山(Jǐuhuá). These mountains make up some of the most important Buddhist heritage sites in the entire country, and thus serve as meccas of pilgrimage to Buddhists all over the nation. In fact, 峨眉山 and 五台山 have been UNESCO World Heritage sites since 1996 and 2006, respectively. 峨眉山 is especially incredible in Chinese culture, not just because its trees are all over 1000 years old, or because it contains the world's tallest Buddha (71 Meters tall), but because it is home to the very first Buddhist temple to ever be built in China.

2004 Chinese artist Wang Qingsong is sometimes compared to German artist Andreas Gursky for their shared usage of hyper-detailed technique to capture the reality of globalization and development. However, Wang's staged photographs have a stronger ironic tint to them. To create his expansive images, Wang stages elaborate scenes in warehouses, involving dozens of models and meticulously placed props combined in impossible arrangements. Through portraying a space crowded with people, overwhelmed with information etc., they reflect on his observation of China's boom in population, industry and commercial presence over the last few decades. For example, in this particular image, the walls are filled with thousands of advertisement posters while dozens of people are still competing to post more. Among the ads, there are many western brands like McDonalds, Starbucks etc., testifying to western commercial influence in Chinese market. Also, the format of the ads are similar to the big character posters (Da Zi Bao) popular during Cultural Revolution, pointing to the similarity between political and commercial struggles.

The Thousand Character Classic Emperor Huizong (宋徽宗, 1082–1135), was the eighth and one of the most famous emperors of the Song dynasty, with a personal life spent amidst luxury, sophistication and art but ending in tragedy. Born as Zhao Ji (趙佶), he was the 11th son of Emperor Shenzong. In February 1100 his older half-brother Emperor Zhezong (哲宗) died without a surviving son, and Huizong succeeded him the next day as emperor, reigning from 1100 to 1126. Huizong was famed for his promotion of Daoism. He was also a skilled poet, painter, calligrapher and musician. Zhao Ji invented the “Slender Gold” style (瘦金體) of calligraphy. The name “Slender Gold” came from the fact that his writing resembled gold filament, twisted and turned. He sponsored numerous artists at his court, and the catalog of his imperial painting collection lists over 6,000 known paintings. Zhao Ji took huge efforts to search for art masters. He established the “Hanlin Huayuan” (翰林畫院, the imperial painting academy), where the best painters all over China share their best works. See his paintings here. Zhao Ji was also a player of the guqin (古琴, a traditional string instrument), as exemplified by his famous painting “Listening to the Qin (聽琴圖)”. He also ordered the construction of a “Wanqin Tang” (萬琴堂, The Hall for Ten-Thousand Qin) in his palace. In 1114, following a request from Emperor Yejong of the Korean court of Goryeo, Huizong sent to the palace in the Goryeo capital at Gaeseong a set of musical instruments to be used for royal banquet music. Two years later, in 1116, he sent another, even larger gift of musical instruments (numbering 428 in total) to the Korean court, this time yayue (雅樂, elegant music) instruments, beginning that nation’s tradition of aak.

When I first arrived in China I was amazed by the culture shock. It isn’t the furthest I have ever traveled however it is the most different. Mention China to people though and they automatically think of Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Hong Kong. Or wonders such as The Great Wall of China, Terracotta Army and the Pearl Tower. However, the Forbidden City really caught my eye! What impressed you the most in China? Several walls were being built from as early as the 7th century BC by ancient Chinese states;[2] selective stretches were later joined together by Qin Shi Huang (220–206 BC), the first Emperor of China. Little of the Qin wall remains.[3] Later on, many successive dynasties have built and maintained multiple stretches of border walls. The most currently well-known of the walls were built by the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). For more ask Google:)

Growing up first generation Asian-American is a little like this: you live in the midwest and feel like you don’t fit in with any group or class. You travel to a place filled with people who look like you and talk like you and feel like you don’t fit in with any group or class. You’re an outsider even in the places that should feel like home. ___________ . . . . #chinatown #chineseculture #asian #asianculture #sanfrancisco #california #streetphotography #urbanphotography #street #cityview #cityscape #heard #shotoniphone
