"The Burning Of The Clavie" Burning the clavie is an ancient Scottish custom still observed at Burghead, a fishing village on the Moray Firth. The clavie is a collection of casks split in two, lit as a bonfire in the evening of 11 January, i.e. New Year's Eve (in Scotland, Hogmanay) by the Julian Calendar. One of these casks is joined together again by a huge nail (Latin clavis; hence the term, it may also be from Scottish Gaelic cliabh, a basket used for holding combustibles). It is then filled with tar, lighted and carried flaming round the village and finally up to a headland upon which stands the ruins of an altar, locally called the Doorie. It here forms the nucleus of the bonfire, which is built up of split casks. When the burning tar-barrel falls in pieces, the people scramble to get a lighted piece with which to kindle the New Year's fire on their cottage hearth. The charcoal of the clavie is collected and put in pieces up the cottage chimneys, to keep spirits and witches from coming down. The Burning of the Clavie also depicting the Burghead Pictish Bull, an illustration from 2006 collection of Pictish pencil drawings, this year I'm adding a bit of colour to them! The Burning of the Clavie is an ancient fire festival held on the 11th January unique to Burghead in Moray. The festival greets the New Year according to the Julian calendar. The Burghead Pictish Bulls are stone carvings found at the Pictish settlement/fort of Burghead. This fort has been found to be of significant importance and power and it is possible that the bulls were a symbol of this status within the Pictish Kingdoms for they are the only examples of carved bulls to date. #burghead #burgheadbulls #pictish #clavie #firefestival #julian #ancienthistory #fort #moray #moraycoast #drawing #illustration #scottishart #scotspirit #history #bronzeage #celticknotwork #celticart #ironage #visitscotland

The Burning of the Clavie, Burghead, 11.1.19. Welcoming in the Pagan New Year with fire and whisky. The Clavie King and his crew dress in Victorian oilskins and carry a burning brazier around the town, stopping at various homes and leaving embers at the door before finally arriving at the Doorie Hill. Embers are said the bring good luck for the coming year. The Burning of the Clavie: celebrating the old new year (which was actually 11/12 January in Scotland, until reverting to 01 Jan in the 1750s) old style in Burghead. A 1,600 year old living tradition that still continues to this day.

The Burning of the Clavie. In Burghead New Year is Celebrated on the 11th of January. The Clavie is set alight and paraded through the streets of the Town, people picking up charred pieces to bring good luck for the new year ahead. #theburningoftheclavie #clavie #newyear #fire #celebration #burghead #moray #morayspeyside #scotland #igersscotland #visitscotland #icu_scotland #highlandcollective #lovescotland #wonderlustscotland #scotsmagazine #scotlandlover #ig_scot #ig_scotland #scotland_greatshots #insta_scotland #scottishcollective #thisisscotland #myfujifilm #xt2 #stevensimmersphotography

Tonight I got to experience the Burning of the Clavie in Burghead. It’s a tradition done on the 11th of January as a way to bring in the New Year, here in Moray 🔥 . Everyone gathers to follow the burning Clavie - a barrel filled with staves - leading to Doorie Hill where it burns and eventually falls down the hill in flames. It is to bring good luck to the local homes and businesses, and it’s also good luck to bring home a piece of the Clavie. (Thank you burghead.com) 🍀 . It was cold tonight, but fun to take part in a local festivity with good friends. . Burning the Clavie at Burghead. It is a celebration of the ancient Scots’ Hogmanay, which falls on January 11, and involves a group of exclusively local men, known as the Clavie Crew. They parade a burning barrel of staves through the village before placing it on the summit of Doorie Hill. #burningoftheclavie #clavie #hogmanay #hogmanay2019 #scotland #scotshots #pictish #ancientscotland #morayspeyside #burghead #fire #firefestival #fujixt1

Hip hip! Happy Pictish new year 🔥 🥳 🎉 🍷 🍸 🍻 #hiphip #clavie #burghead #pictish #fire #hiphip

Happy Old New Year Witches! Today we're taking a trip to Burghead, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😊 Many people still celebrate the old New Year between January 11-15. This New Year goes by the Julian Calendar, which came about under the rule of Julius Caesar. Many who celebrated this New Year were known to celebrate Pagan practices, such as the Scots. After Scotland switched to the Gregorian Calendar in 1752, many people wanted to keep the old Pagan customs in place and so, the villagers of Burghead, Scotland, celebrate the Old New Years eve still with "The Burning o' the Clavie." During this almost ritualistic celebration, they fill a wooden barrel split in half with tar and staves and set it ablaze before the "Clavie Crew" parade it through the town mounted on a pole. The "clavie" is then taken to an altar where it is left to burn to smoldering embers. Villagers gather these embers and take them home to put in their fireplaces and up their chimneys to keep spirits and witches from coming down. How is this Pagan ritual related to witches though? The burning of the clavie in the fireplace is similar to the burning of the Yule log. Witches were know to celebrate the Yule holiday in many different stories in lore. Burning it is said to keep evil spirits and negativity at bay and ensure prosperity and protection for the household.
