Ok, while most people are concentrating on losing weight right now, I'm focusing on adding this year for the challenge. My goals this year are strength & powerlifting related. Don't worry, I'll do a post on losing weight as well as maintaining muscle while losing weight in the near future. . The picture says it all but I'll break it down a bit more for you. . 🏋️‍♂️IN THE GYM While bulking you want to focus on lifting heavy to add size and strength. You're best opportunity to do this is through Progressive Overload (increasing weight & volume continually) and stimulating each body part 2x per week. Focus on your compound exercises (squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead press, etc) and sprinkle in your Isolation exercises (I like to use them as finishes to really tap myself out). . 🍗IN THE KITCHEN Most importantly , you're going to be in a caloric surplus. Now, heres the thing...just because you're "bulking" doesn't mean you should eat everything you see...its still IIFYM (If it fits your macros) not IIFYM (If it fits your mouth). Speaking of...while bulking, increase your maintenance macros by 200-500 and monitor bf% from there on (adjusting macros as needed). Try to get 25-30% of your calories from healthy fats and keep your protein around 1-1.2 grams per lb of bodyweight. Remember, the more "bad" weight you put on..the more (and harder) you've got to drop when you decide to cut. . The 🗝 to getting the best ROI? CONSISTENCY 💯 . Bulking as a college student... (yes it involves Panda Express!) It is day 3, and I find myself having a difficult time eating as much as I’m supposed to. I currently have myself set at 2100/2200 Calories a Day (400 more than maintenance), and my macros are dependent on whether I lift that day or not. Because I am lifting today, my macros are set at 20/40/40 (fat, carbs, protein respectively) so that I have energy to lift and protein to recover. Calculated out, this means 210 grams of protein... which is not easy to get! Tonight I have approximately 12oz of grilled chicken, 2/3 cup of rice, and 2/3 cup of mixed vegetables. After my lift tonight, I will have either a protein shake or bar dependent on how many calories I still need to eat. When bulking, it is SO essential to not do a “dirty bulk” where you simply eat more crap in order to hit calorie goals. This will only result in fat gain and not get you any closer to your goals!! I realized that I’ve been taking easy on my shoulders by not focusing on finding new exercises🤷‍♂️ • • The one thing that kills growth in the gym and in life is complacency.
