Plantar fasciitis, or plantar fasciosis, typically presents as a result of poor foot mechanics, unsupportive shoes, weight gain or walking on uneven surfaces. It is seen in 10-15% of the population and although seen in all ages, it is most commonly occurring during middle age. Women more often present with plantar heel compared to men and is more frequently seen in the athletic population such as running, accounting for up to 8-10% of all running related injuries. Heel pain with the first steps in the morning, restriction in ankle range, pain worse when barefoot on hard surfaces and with stairs, as well as a sudden increase in activity levels prior to the onset of symptoms are often what people with plantar fasciitis present to the clinic. Pilates classes are back in action. Make sure you鈥檝e had an assessment and that you鈥檙e booked into a class. Keep in mind that from April, due to health fund legislation changes, all participants need to have an annual assessment with a Physio in order to claim. We will no longer be able to refer to these classes as 鈥淧ilates鈥 classes from April. All classes, despite still being Pilates classes, need to be called Physio group exercise classes in order for you to claim. I also had several injuries playing soccer when I was younger and it was the help of a Physiotherapist that got me back on the field. . 馃憡馃徏What is your favourite thing about working as a physiotherapist? . I have a few favourite things! I really enjoy my clients and the opportunity to get to know them over time. Working as a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist gives me the opportunity to care for people in a way that is significant and I feel grateful for the opportunity to be of service in this way. I worked on Magician and Walking this morning. These are really fun and engage every muscle in your body. During the exercise, I'm going through a checklist on my form over and over and over again. Where is my pelvis? What are my shoulders doing? Am I keeping my weight out of my cervical spine? Is my breathing correct? Etc.. And I do the same when I teach. Self-practice, observation and constant continuing education are what make you a good teacher. Recently, there have been new guidelines released to remove fear and clear up myths surrounding exercise during pregnancy. The research found that women who are physically active throughout their pregnancy term have up to a 40% reduction in the risk of developing gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia. Furthermore, there were no associated side effects of training on risk of miscarriage, a small baby or a pre- term birth.
