🧐So here’s the thing... A patient comes in with pain in the knee and upon assessment, you realize the primary driver of this pain is not actually coming from the knee. How many times does this happen?? Too often, right? ... If you have been following us, our physio, Dr. Kat recently ran 🏃‍♀️a marathon and during her training, she experienced consistent pain to the lateral (outside) knee on one side after a few miles into the run. ... Upon assessment, we concluded that her pain was driven by the opposite hip/pelvis complex. She was unable to dissociate the hip from the pelvis properly during the swing phase, causing a hiking of that side of the pelvis. This created valgus moment on the loading leg during each step, which is non-optimal. ... To combat this, we prescribed her exercises that consisted of a push/pull mechanism. The exercises involved pushing with the loading leg (the painful leg) and pulling with the swinging leg, all while stabilizing the pelvis. ... After complying with her exercise prescription, she was able to train and run the marathon without any discomfort to the lateral knee. 🎉🎊 ... We shared here a few examples of push/pull exercises in various positions, using various props but there are two main points to this post: 1️⃣It is important to determine what the primary driver(s) are and not focus ONLY on painful sites. (Clinician’s responsibility) 2️⃣Compliance of exercise prescription is necessary to create an optimal outcome. (Patient’s responsibility) ... This case was specific to Dr. Kat and may not apply in other knee pains. If you have discomfort that is intense or chronic in nature, we recommend that you see an M.D and your physio for proper program suitable for you. ... Sitting in the car and driving long distances causes back, shoulder and neck pain for many people. It's important to try to keep your neck and spine in the best possible alignment when driving. We all tend to 'slouch' forwards - rounding our upper back and curling our shoulders forwards. To counteract this, try slowly rolling your shoulders up towards your ears, backwards (shoulder blades together), and down. Backward shoulder rolls will help loosen your upper back and shoulders and also help you to sit up straighter. Only do this when driving if it is safe to do so! If you suffer from persistent pain, contact a Chartered Physiotherapist for an assessment. #spinalhealth #posture #clinicalpilates
