Transformation Tuesday with a 3 year and 10 pound difference. The left photo is from my first show in 2015 I stepped in stage 7 months postpartum while nursing at 135 pounds. On the right is my most recent show where I stepped on stage at about 145 pounds. A lot of growth physically and mentally has happened between these photos. The struggle postpartum was putting on muscle after having the baby and holding water. But I was able to drop all my pregnancy weight plus an additional 7 pounds. This last show was following a 20 pound weight drop and 18 months away from the stage. My hormones were still in flux, since I stopped nursing in February. Many women take a year for their bodies to normalize once they stop producing milk. This body has proven once again that it is capable of anything. 10 pounds heavier, carrying fuller glutes,hamstrings, and a significantly more muscular upper body. This is bodybuilding. Woke up this morning at 149 pounds. This month has made me realise how much has happened since my diagnosis in March. I've had a whirlwind of doctors appointments, surgery for my sentinel lymph node biopsy, entered 2 bikini competitions and haven't even gotten to talk about my double mastectomy or the chemo I'm currently undergoing. A double mastectomy is not something I thought I would ever have to contemplate .. but it became very real after discussing options with my surgeons. My cancer was the kind that needed complete removal of the breast tissue and although it was only in my right breast, the chances of it reappearing in the left was high. (Plus no one wants a lopsided Barbie boob on the one side and 1× A cup on the other). So double mastectomy it was to be. Mastectomies aren't necessarily the treatment option you will receive on the diagnosis of breast cancer. Never let the fear of cancer or its treatment prevent you from getting yourself checked out. The key is detecting cancer early though ... it may mean a less aggressive treatment plan...but more importantly it really does save lives. It saved mine. •••• These are a few photos around that time. From my sizing appointment with my amazing plastic surgeon Dr Marisse Venter to living life like a normal person...and getting my last (and most rewarding competition) squeezed in before surgery and the long layoff that followed. And the farewell dinner for my boobs... NABBA/WFF was a last minute decision...I had a terrible prep for that competition. I spent the entire night before, ruining my tan in a hot bath, drinking energade that I wasnt supposed to have, in an attempt to ease severe muscle cramps. I called @coach_essie at 6am the following morning to tell him I was pulling out. He made me get on stage anyway. I'm so glad he did. One area I really have to focus on, is my glutes. Growing & toning them, has taken a lot of time & sweat. When I got home after a heavy leg workout today, I added this as a finisher. Standing cable hip abductors. Believe me, I do lots of squats; they are great for increasing strength and power and they recruit multiple muscle groups. Hip abduction is considered an isolation exercise. Abduction exercises not only help strengthen & tone my glutes, they help with my range of motion for performing exercises like squats. I find they also help with glute activation for all exercises, which is a problem for many people. You don’t want to neglect your abductors as strengthening them helps with core stability and they are essential for balance & athletic performance. When our hip flexors are weak, we are more prone to injury. This happens because other muscles will compensate for the weak hip flexors leading to pain, difficulty with certain movements and overall poor performance.
