A #longoverduepost about my #im703canada experience.... . The lead-up to racing morning was exciting, with a lot of determination & hope. Having DNF’d a 70.3 in 2014, I did not want to face that defeat again. . I trained my ass off until having unexpected “life” complications 3 weeks before race day.... I tried to think positive & get on with dealing with what had to be done. . Race day had heat warnings. We had been experiencing a lot of heat for weeks (not the norm for my part of the country). I did the prep. . Swim -I wasn’t nervous. I love the swim! Normally. Stepping into the water for the swim start was awful because of all the stones. Super slow for me to get to a depth where I could start swimming. And, the water was too warm for me & I was wearing a full-sleeved wetsuit! I felt ill for most of my swim, at times seriously considering quitting. I’m not a quitter! I finally found my rhythm about halfway. Then got smashed in the head by someone doing the backstroke who I struggled to avoid for at least 300 meters! I was out of the water after 53 minutes (swim cut-off time is 1hr 10min). I had a good transition, thankful for the volunteer’s help & encouragement. But I still felt yucky. . Bike -started off bad right out of the gate. Couldn’t get my legs to work & walked my bike up the first small hill! Finally got going on the bike & experienced the awfulness of some scary parts of the road & being crowded by the many bikers - most of them being the 140.6’ers doing their 2nd loop. I’m a timid biker & stuck like glue to the edge of the road, but that didn’t seem enough for some aggressive bikers. Out on the open highway, I was fine & thinking I could actually do this! Then up the Callaghan to the 1st bike time cut-off. Did ok & then something happened to my legs. Had absolutely no power in them! Still, powered up best I could. Finally had to walk my bike up a hill. I was over-heated & still couldn’t seem to generate any power in my legs (temps had climbed to 35°C).... continue reading in comments below...

Alarm was set so early this morning (4 a.m.) because my wife started school today. So I had to get home before she left. Then a quick ride with @gozwift and 5 laps around my block. I can count on 1 hand how many days I haven't trained this summer and I'm absolutely enjoying it. When I started triathlons it was simply because I was bored. Now I've made it a part of my daily life. Training hard means I needed to improve my diet to feel the gains better. I have another 13 days until I officially start school myself, so there's still more miles to go out and get. . For those curious, the chocolate chips are Fair Trade and 63% dark. You mix them in the batter for better distribution and texture as they melt. . . Goals set. Plan in place. Throw back to when I came in to the finish while doing The Thriller at my 5 miler last month 💃🏻😂 . . . Another 5 miles in the bank tonight. I totally nailed my steady state run with super consistent splits (9:02, 8:58, 9:02, 8:56, 8:58). And that’s not always an easy task when you have to stop for traffic every quarter mile. Man, there is SO MUCH more going on just one hour earlier in the evenings. It’s a Thursday night and my town was just a-hoppin! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Great few days of training down the shore. I started yesterday with a nice fast bike ride to Atlantic City and followed it up with a half mile ocean swim. Today I did a full mile in the ocean. This @newwaveswimbuoy gave me some peace of mind that I was visible to the boats as well as the lifeguards as I went down the beach. *Restday for running* I went for an easy little tour to do some active recovery. On the way I found out that the cycling part of my legs were really waiting and wanting for me to go faster. So I turned it in a bit of a cycling fartlek. It's a wonderful day for it. Nice temperature and just enough wind to make it challenging, but not to heavy on the legs. I wasn’t going to post this picture, but that guy in the background.... that’s my Dad. 😂 He said “I wanna be in your picture!” Hahaha • But it was SO hot this morning. Like a 7 mile run with 3 mile tempo in the middle was just not going to happen. 👎🏼 I gave it a shot & got 2 mile warm up & 2.5+ of those tempo miles done but after that, I had to call it quits. I had to listen to my body. The ☀️ was shining on me the entire time, it was hot & unfortunately I couldn’t battle through it. This past weekend at MTT we had 2 people pass out from heat & an ambulance had to be called. We have to listen to our bodies during summer running. It’s so important. “Run the mile you are in!” Something @mellank said a while ago and it always stuck in my head. Today was a bit different for me 😃. This week hasn’t gone to plan due to my legs being destroyed at the pound class session last Saturday 😂🙈. But that’s ok, it doesn’t worry me that I missed a couple of runs🤷🏼‍♀️. I actually felt great running this morning on rested legs 😊. I was watching Michelle’s stories yesterday (@accordingtomeesh ) and she was discussing running bare without the Garmin . Now it’s been a long time since I did that.... months in fact. Sometimes we become a slave to the stats and gadgets, I know I am 😂🙈. Sometimes we need to strip back and just run with how we feel and get used to how our paces feel without having to constantly check our wrist . So today, that’s what I did 😃🙌🏻. Yes, I still took the Garmin with me as I wanted to clock those miles on my total and keep track of my annual total but I tied it to my @spibelt_uk at the back so I couldn’t see or check it. I felt FREE ❤️🙌🏻. It felt so good to just RUN ! No schedule, no set pace..... just run. I ran with how I felt and didn’t stop or slow down as I was just loving the mile I was in. You know what, it turned out great 👍🏻, negative splits and a decent pace that I’m proud of. I’m going to make this a regular thing 😂 “Garmin free Thursday” . Ok so I wasn’t TOTALLY free of gadgets but at the same time I wasn’t distracted by it or even feel the need to check it 😁.
