The QL (Quadratus lumborum), when deciding to make itself known, does so by giving you sharp stabbing low back pain, SI joint pain, and deep diffuse low back pain under load. . When the pelvis loses its position relative to the ground, the offending muscle is usually this one. . The problem is, it’s extremely difficult to engage ‘consciously’ and it is VERY strong. . When your legs ache so badly that you can barely walk, and running is completely out of the question, you need this series. . Right now! . Shin splints will take down even the toughest of athletes, no, you can’t just gut it out and work through it. . The tibialis posterior sits on the medial aspect of the lower leg behind the shin, and it gets pissed. . You end up with avulsion fractures and major pain and inflammation. The cause of shin splints, for the most part is weakness and inhibition, not repetition and overuse. . So first we release the tissues and then we strengthen up that lower leg so you don’t have this issue any longer. . Research shows that most shin splints are because of a mechanical insufficiency which causes you to load incorrectly, and bam, injury. . Here’s how to find out if that’s what you have AND how to fix it. . The pelvis slides from side to side, which is completely normal, it’s when it locks out and stays there, or even worse, loads that way under stress (exercise). . The three culprits are usually the Glute Medius, the TFL and the QL (quadratics lumborum). . For the most part it’s not a weakness, it’s an inhibition. . Think of the pelvis as a bucket of water, and the nervous system constantly working to maintain a level top relative to the ground. . As the pelvis tilts, it loads shear and this is what causes the pain. . THE TEST. . 1. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. 2. Raise one hip to 90 degrees and hold for 10 seconds. 3. No deviation at all and you pass. 4. Anything other than a perfectly upright torso and neutral pelvis is a fail. . Let’s get it done! . 1️⃣ Glute Medius and TFL Release 2️⃣ QL Release 3️⃣ Wall Bump . How about a torn meniscus? . No problem! . A good rule of thumb for knee rehab is to remember that the goal is to reclaim full range of motion as rapidly as possible and to push muscle strengthening around the tissue associated with the joint as much as you can. . Before you go under the knife make sure that you evaluate the knee and known what you’re in for if you actually go through with surgery. . Most research now supports aggressive rehab as a much more applicable option and effective option with a more favorable outcome as opposed to surgical intervention. . Whether you’ve had surgery or are trying to prevent surgery, this is a good place to begin. . First let’s find out if you have a meniscus issue. . THE TEST. . 1. Stand on one leg while supporting yourself on a doorway or the rig. 2. Bend the knee in question to 20 degrees. 3. Twist back and forth fully at the knee 3-5 times each direction. 4. Pain in the knee equals a fail. . Imbalanced pelvis equals low back pain, every time. . Here’s how to find out if that’s what you have AND how to fix it. . The pelvis slides from side to side, which is completely normal, it’s when it locks out and stays there, or even worse, loads that way under stress (exercise). . The three culprits are usually the Glute Medius, the TFL and the QL (quadratics lumborum). . For the most part it’s not a weakness, it’s an inhibition. . Think of the pelvis as a bucket of water, and the nervous system constantly working to maintain a level top relative to the ground. . As the pelvis tilts, it loads shear and this is what causes the pain. . THE TEST. . 1. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. 2. Raise one hip to 90 degrees and hold for 10 seconds. 3. Uneven hips are a future hip replacement and a major contributor to low back problems. . So why have them? Other than the cool look they give you. . Tackling the huge group of muscles that actually control and influence the position of the pelvis is a daunting task. So let’s simplify the process. . First test to establish which side has the weakness, and then get to work fixing how you move and retrain your brain to adopt the new ‘normal.’ . THE TEST. . 1. Sit with your hips and knees at 90 degrees. 2. Extend one leg, resting that heel on the ground. 3. Stand up using the opposite leg. 4. Repeat for each side. 5. The weak side is the fail. . When doing rehab, or even prehab, the mistake most trainers, docs and coaches make is only addressing the side with the pain or injury. . That’s the recipe for repeat problems or long winded programs. . Make sure that you work through both sides. . Do your knees hurt when you squat? If that’s the case, you’re leaving some power on the table. . Anytime there’s pain, your body goes into ‘protection’ mode and no matter how great you are at pushing through the pain, you guessed it, you’re compensating. . This is a great series to get stronger and faster by allowing your body to exploit more of the horsepower that you have on tap, without compensating. . Step one, stop foam rolling your quads, you’re just beating them up for nothing. . Here’s how foam rolling works (it doesn’t), you pound the tissue with the roller essentially turning up the ‘volume’ on the sensation in that area and drowning out the ‘noise’ from the pain, especially if you’re rolling your ITB. . Working on the contractile tissue connected to the knee and the mechanics and strength upstream, is a fast, easy and effective way of creating some serious strength while keeping your knees ‘original equipment’. . Why do you need strong lats? Because they are a major player in the shoulder health game. Tomorrow we tackle the chest! . The latissimus dorsi comes from the thoracolumbar fascia and ends up on the humerus (coming up on the inside). . Here is where most ‘back training’ swerved off the track, people engage in short, restricted movements. . The longer the stretch the longer the contraction IF you move through full range of motion. . The length/tension relationship of the lat is unique and if you want to develop strong lats (yes you do) you need to treat them differently. . The shoulder becomes subject to major injury because of long term restricted use of this massive sheet of muscle. This is a great series to work through full range and subsequently, full contraction, and you’ll find yourself sporting a pair of lats that will catch wind like a hang glider on a windy day. . Yes, these drills WILL improve your pull ups. . I got a pic with 2 of my most favorite people ever!! If it weren't for them, I don't know what my life would be like. Thanks to my super bad ass sister in law Jessica, she introduced me to Lu, the owner of Elevate Fitness and Martial Arts! I started my fitness journey back in the day with Jessica over at @csagym but my current life didn't allow me to commute to Dublin like I did before I had kids so I got very out of shape. I told Jessica I needed to go back to the gym and for YEARS she told me about Lu opening a gym right next to my house but it took me a long time to finally step through the doors to workout. I'm bummed it took me so long to make that decision but I'm glad I finally did. These women are the strongest and most inspiring people I know. How to tell if you’ve got a bulging disc in your neck. . Quick note, it’s still not a bad idea to get evaluated by a competent doc. . A bulging disc in your neck is not cause for alarm (outside of sequestered ruptures) and A LOT of people have them. . Neck pain. Shoulder pain. Tingling and numbness in the arm and hand. Shoulder blade pain. . The cervical and brachial plexus run a power supply all the way to the tips of the fingers and everything in between. . When there is a bulge, it complicates everything. . Just as in the lumbar spine, you need to avoid cervical flexion, to prevent the disc from loading the IVF (intervertebral foramen) and creating more problems. . Extension will force the disc to load its nucleus much more towards a centralized position. . By forcing full range of motion and working the disc through its normal mechanics, and then strengthening the posterior neck musculature, you become a rockstar for your neck. . THE TESTS (there are two) 1. Hands laced on top of your head 2. Tuck your chin and push down. 3. Pain or increased symptoms is a fail. . 1. Turn towards painful side 2. Bend towards the same side 3. Look up towards the same side 4. Push down on top of your head 5. Pain or increased symptoms is a fail. .
