Try hanging about for a while to loosen up that back and shoulders. •• If you’ve never hung before then start with your feet on a step (mine are at the start of the video but you can’t see the step 🤦🏼‍♀️). Only take as much weight as is comfortable. Then try gentle rocking side to side to loosen up the shoulders. •• Once you’re comfortable with this and ready to take your full weight try hanging with your feet off the ground. •• Once this feels ok then add in some side to side movements and gentle twisting. •• You may even gain a centimetre or two in height if you do it often enough...#tallgoals 👍🏼 •• Take your time with each phase and progress slowly.

The pull up is one of the most effective upper body exercises for developing muscle mass in the back and biceps. It also targets muscles in the shoulders, chest, and core. To maintain good form you’ll want to keep your legs straight and your shoulders back. Start from a hanging position and then pull yourself up. You’ll also want to avoid sticking your chin out over the bar (this can strain your neck) and just strive to pull yourself up as high as you can. . For most people that’s a real challenge. Is there one exercise that stands out as the epitome of strength to you? For me it’s always been pull ups. If pull-ups seem completely unattainable then try using a resistance band. Better to add a band in for assisted pull ups, and perform full reps from a dead hang, than complete half pull ups with momentum. Plenty of people do the latter poorly and in doing so fail to engage the lats and risk shoulder injury . Having the band under your feet makes it easier, under the knee (as shown here) harder. There are bands that offer a range of resistance as well. So you can start off with an easier band, and progress to harder bands as you get stronger. If you’ve never attempted a pull up then try working with a resistance band and see if this gives you the edge you need. Everyone knows that pull ups are one of the best upper body strength builders that exists today (not the kipping kind), as much as you want to deny it. Most are more comfortable just bench pressing. Looks better on the gram. Well it’s time to stop ignoring the things you suck at yet know are good for you. The reason why it seems difficult is because they’re difficult to scale. A newbie bench presser can start with the bar and slowly add weight as strength increases. With pull ups/chin ups, not so much. You either can or can’t. If you’re one that can’t, you can still build on strength by using a lot of the same principles you might use while building other forms of weight training. Quick tip: Lat pull downs do not help, at least in my experience. Before I joined the military, I worked every muscle group that I felt was needed to perform a pull up. I never got better. Finally one day someone told me that if I wanted to get better at pull ups, maybe I should do some damn pull ups. But what if you can’t even get one? Start with negatives. Jump up to where your chin is over the bar and take 5-6 seconds to get down. Do that repeatedly until you can’t do it in 5-6 seconds. If you can only get one or two, identify where your sticking point is and do isometric holds. Jump up to the bar and lower yourself to the point where you get stuck. Again, hold 5-6 seconds and repeat until you can’t hold in place that long. If you can get up to around 6, do those regular six but continue to do the work above until you can hit 10 consistently. If you can get over 10, start adding light weight around the waist, hitting a minimum of 6 reps (if less than that, you’ve applied too much weight). Then work your way up to 10 before adding more weight. These are just my recommendations and have seen success training clients in this way. And no I did not mention bands. I have yet to see anyone who uses bands progress off bands. Again, just my experience. Always looking for new ways to train my grip as its integral to @spartan racing. I used to just focus on deadhangs but they got boring fast! Bouldering is improving my grip for sure and @ocrbeast.co has given me some great new ideas like this Pull up ➡️ Turn ➡️ Toes to bar combo. Maintaining shoulder health shouldn't be too complicated. A simple #deadhang has many benefits but is often overlooked as a theme park gimmick. Great exercise for improving shoulder flexion, opening up your thoracic, strengthening your rotator cuff and giving your shoulder joint a much needed distraction/joint mobilisation. All of these go a long way to help with shoulder pain. I usually aim for 2 minutes but you can do these in sets of 20-30 seconds and work up from there. These can also be done with your legs on a bench to take some of the weight off or even on a lat pulldown machine where the resistance can be adjusted. Morning, Breakfast. Dressed for work. *1 Negative Pull Up done. 19 to go!! Off to work. Will pick up where I left off when I get home later. Lats are aching but to be honest its more of a strength sensation than a achey tired feeling so thats keeping me motivated. Anyone else practising Negative Pull ups? I'll be doing some scapular pulls, deadhangs and assisted pull ups later too. My biggest challenge is including this exercise into my everyday and making it a habit. Everyone keeps telling me consistency is key. If I want this goal. I need to practise it everyday. Putting it on instagram isn't showing off, its accountability for me. Accountability is working for me on my fitness pal and sharing my gym work outs with my PT. It’s Monday y’all!! I didn’t get as much sleep as I would have liked but I still made sure to get to the gym and put in that work. Sometimes I want to see results right now but I know that it takes time. Little by little, I will be where I want to be. Today’s workout was Day 4 of the #loseitwithlatreal program with @aaptiv and @latrealmitchell . It’s amazing how hard you can sweat in less than 30 minutes! 💦 Followed it up with some core with trainer at @planetfitness . 🔥 My friend Julie and I have been working on our dead hang and the monkey bars. Our goal is to be able to some pull-ups/chin ups! I hung for 30 seconds twice, AND did the monkey bars today. I’m not sure I’ve ever done the monkey bars before y’all! It’s always a great feeling when you accomplish something new. Keep pushing friends! You are stronger than you know.

The dead hang should actually be called an active hang. Knuckles over the bar, thumbs around the bar, shoulders down, lats engaged, abs/butt/legs tight, and toes pointed. During the time I have been training with weights I have noticed a common factor amongst women and that is most women cannot do 1 proper pull up! It is not because they don't train hard because I see them, and they are, yet they still cannot get that chin to the bar. In my opinion there is no one exercise that is a true testament to upper body strength than the Pull-up... and the best thing is you only need your body and a bar to do them, that's it. For me personally when it comes to being strong all round you should base your programming around very few exercises and they are Pull-ups Squats, Deadlifts and the Bench Press, and of course Pull ups will add that muscle to your upper back and Lats (not forgetting your shoulders, biceps and forearms). So here are my suggestions based on what has got me doing a fare few pull-ups, and will hopefully help you with yours. #1 Bottom Grip Hold This is very simple, you grab the bar with a wide grip, squeeze as HARD as you can and hang for as LONG as you can. Practise this a lot - Grip strength counts towards a pull-up. If you have a strong back but a weak grip your pull-ups will never reach maximum potential. So simply start by gripping the bar for as long as possible. At least 30 secs at a time for 5 sets. #2 Top Grip Hold Yep you got it, top Grip is similar to bottom Grip hold except your arms are bent at 90% or more and your chin should be above the bar. If your elbows are being driven down by your sides and you can feel the tension in your lats your doing it right. This is important as this will help you get stronger and help you get that first Pullup. The aim is to hold a Top Grip hold for 30 seconds time before you progress to step #3 negatives. #3 Negatives This is where the real work begins, your going to lower your body from Top Grip POSITION to the bottom Grip POSITION of a pull up, working on negatives will work on your strength fast! You will know if your doing these right because when you get out of bed your lats will be sore, the lats are the primary muscles in a pull-up , so you want as much recruitment as possible. Totally faking this smile. Ive been aching all over from an upper body session yesterday given courtesy of moi!!! I can't blame anyone. Pushing myself at the top of my weight threshold to maximise all my lat muscles to help me with my pull ups. I know exactly where my lats are as they have ached alllllll day. Heres where I did the damage: Day 5 - Upperbody Close Hand Pulldowns 2 x 10 @ 39kg (Grip not holding up so broke the 2nd set down into 5, then 4, then 1 1 x 10 @ 34.3kg (Broke it down 5 and then 5) 1 x 10 - Same as above Bent Over Barbell Row 1 x 10 @ 40kg (not convincing. Broke it down to a 6 and a 4) 3 x 10 @ 35kg Wide Lat Pulldown 1 x 10 @ 34.3kg 1 x 10 @ 32kg (grip going slightly towards the end) 1 x 10 @ (grip going from about 7th rep) Barbell Shoulder Press 1 x 2 @ 30kg 1 x 10 @ 20kg (Easy) 1 x 10 @ 22.5 kg (Pushed through. Used legs on last 3-4) 1 x 10 @ 22.5kg 1 x 10 @ 22.5 kg (Ground that out. Barbell Bicep Curl 1 x 6 @ 20kg 1 x 10 @ 17.5kg 1 x 10 @ 17.5kg 1 x 10 @ 15kg Giantset 1 ) Front Raise 5kg and then dropped to 4kg for side raises, in & out and side pulses 2) As above. The burn! 3) And finally as above. Ouch! And then this evening: 10 Scap Pulls 3 Negative Pull Ups (very slow) 40 Sec Deadhang (grip struggling a bit, no suprise though) 2 Negative Pull Up 3 Assisted Pull Ups Daily work that I'm intending to build on. Its a challenge at the moment. Physically and mentally.
