Our second lifter to go at the 2019 USAPL Tacoma “Rookie” meet was Kristine McMahon. She ended up with PRs across the board on every lift ending with a 152kg/334lb squat, a 92.5kg/203.5lb bench press, and a 177.5kg/390.5lb deadlift for a 422kg/928.4lb total! Her total earned her a gold medal and was also enough to qualify for USAPL Nationals. Nice work Kristine!

Dealing with Your “Tight” Hamstrings - Similar to my post the other night on hip flexors, hamstrings are a muscle group I constantly hear are “tight”. Hamstrings in general are tightly bound and aren’t meant to be loose and pliable. The hamstrings and low back pain get amplified given the relationship with the sciatic nerve. What most need is to load their hamstrings! - Doorway straight leg PAILs Lie on your back with one leg straight against the doorway. Press into the doorway for 10 seconds before trying to pull away or scooting forward for a deeper stretch. Repeat up to 3x. - Deadbug Alternating Straight Leg Switches The idea of maintaining a weight above your head is to increase core stability. Whenever something feels tight, often there’s a weak link elsewhere in the body. It’s not unusual to have clients work with me for 10-15 minutes and discover just by doing some deep breathing and core work that they unlock extra degrees of flexibility. - 45 Degree Back Extension-Nordic Ham Curls Initially you want to have control of the back extension, ensuring that the hamstrings are doing most of the work (and not the lower back). You can even add in a single leg back extension before trying your hand at the modified Nordic Ham Curl. The reason it goes in here is that for most, jumping right into a Nordic Ham Curl off the floor is too hard. The immediate loss of control does the lifter zero good, so learning how to wield their hamstrings like a champ would make the progression much more effective. - Straight Leg RDLs Loading the hamstrings is key to opening up and controlling new ranges. Start with a standard RDL, before moving to a straight leg version and ending with a deficit straight leg pull.

Rest time in between warmups and my AMRAP set with 585LBs was short today...trying to be diligent and not take too much time in between sets...was able to get 585LBs for a top set of 4 reps beltless/strapless...callus finally ripped and twinged by bicep just a tiny bit, but was able to still finish my workout tonight strongly...rowed the 160LB DBs following this on my heaviest set for a 1x15 before moving over to lat pulls and light bicep curls for health... #powerlifting #deadlift #deadlifts #back #biceps #rows #myoblox #formulasanmateo #theseventhcirclegym #theseventhcirclesf #projectsavage

Only way to go is up.

Session today @titleboxingclubforesthills included deadlift variations, forearm stand holds and, rather unexpectedly, a mini dance session. I have not swayed my hips around in MONTHS. Not that long ago I sincerely thought I was dying, and the last time I had danced was at our yttp graduation puja ceremony when even then the throws of the disease were upon me and I could feel it weighing me down. For this to spontaneously happen without thinking about (and I know it doesn’t look like much believe me I got real moves) is indicative of how much better I am feeling. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love to dance, it is my bliss. Not doing it for so many months while I was in such a bad place, I’d hear that music, that rhythm of Shivas drum, but it could not move me... man, i will never take my health for granted again. Thank you God for my struggles, getting through them is empowering me in a way I could never have known. ✋🏽I’d like to preface this post by saying this topic is quite controversial amongst the physio community but here are a few of my thoughts based on my understanding of the latest research and my experience as working as a physio ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🤷🏽‍♂️The short answer to this question is, there is no agreed gold standard of an ideal posture- A study of 295 physios were asked to pick the best posture out of 9 pictures and although a majority of them picked 1 of 2 postures, these were indeed were very different. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 💁🏽‍♂️Another 2017 study looking at 1,108 adolescents stratified into 4 different posture clusters found there to be no association between cluster membership and the presence of neck pain. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🚷Yes, sometimes when we are already in Pain, certain postures may be provocative or aggravate pain but this doesn’t mean they are bad and should be permanently be avoided. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🏃🏽‍♂️A phrase commonly said in the physio community is “the best posture is your next one” which I would agree with. Being in one position for too long is likely to contribute to some degree of pain or discomfort. Change positions, get up regularly and exercise daily, to reduce the likelihood of muscles and joints stiffening/tightening up! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👋🏽Anyway my faithful followers, that’s it for another Thursday instalment of common questions I get asked as a Physio. REVERSE SUMO DEADLIFT Fantastic for those learning to deadlift and who are having difficulties with maintaining a straight spine. Lift is started in squat racks and then worked down to ground or height suitable for lifter. In this instance I’m focusing on challenging my spine position by slowly tapping the ground at the bottom of the lift instead of letting go.
