💥Deadlifts and Low Back Pain💥 - 🚨While deadlifts are commonly blamed for low back pain, research tends to say the opposite. An exercise known to help make your back and hips STRONGER might actually also make them HEALTHIER! - 📚 Welch et al looked at the effects of a 16-week free-weight resistance training routine on patients with lower back pain for greater than 3 months in duration - 🏋🏻In addition to deadlifts, they included goblet squats, lunges, planks, and step ups - 💪🏼They also had individuals lifting loads between their 6 and 10 repetition maximum - 📈The results showed significant improvements in fatty infiltrate of the lumbar muscles, a 72% decrease in pain scoring, a 76% improvement in disability measurements, and increases in quality of life scores! - 📚Another study (Asa 2015) took people with greater than 3 months of low back pain and split them into two groups: - 📊One group did 8 weeks of deadlift training while the other group did low load motor control exercises designed to SPECIFICALLY TARGET the impairments of the individuals that were found on exam - 📈After the intervention, both groups had significant decreases in PAIN intensity, and increases in STRENGTH & muscle ENDURANCE measurements - 📉The only statically significant difference between groups was in their Patient Specific Functional Scale (a questionnaire that specifically measures the specific functional limitations of the specific individual), which favored the low load group (not surprising since the exercises were INDIVIDUALLY TAILORED to the specific person) - 🗝 So what are some of the key takeaways? - 📌Deadlifts are not inherently BAD for your back 📌In fact, deadlifts can actually HELP to decrease pain while increasing strength and resiliency in the hips and spinal musculature - 🚨Does this mean that EVERYONE with back pain should be deadlifting? NO. ⁉️Or that deadlifting can NEVER contribute to low back pain if programmed or performed incorrectly? I hit 205# for 1 rep last week. And it was the biggest struggle getting it up. I told Mike I thought my trap bar deadlifts had finally plateau’ed (even tho I know nothing about programming and exercise haha). He told me to do it again this week and I managed to get 8 reps! Still a huge drop off from my 15 reps @ 200# but it’s certainly better than 1 . . . week 2 started off good today. had to hit a single for deadlifts. went up to 250k(551lbs). It's been nearly two weeks since I have managed to complete a full workout at the prescribed weights. There are many excuses but I won't use them. It feels good to be on the climb again rather than slipping backwards. Lifted 410 after my deadlift workout as a sort of overload/working max. Only 10 pounds from my 1RM. I cant wait for the next max day. As an interesting side note, the combined total weight lifted today from Deadlift and Rack pulls was 20,820 pounds. #deadlifts #rackpull

Deadlifts blow every other exercise out of the water in terms of total body effectiveness, HANDS DOWN!! - For starters, deadlifts work more muscles simultaneously than any other movement (yes, including squats). The deadlift essentially forces the whole body to grow. - IT’S NOT JUST A LOWER BODY MOVEMENT! - Since dead’s recruit the most muscles to perform they help build the most muscle which in turn will help you burn the most body fat. - Deadlifts are also tops in terms of strengthening the core. When deadlifting you hit all the surrounding and supporting muscles of the waist, backside, hips and, of course, lower back. Want that sexy core? Deadlift more! - Another misconception is that deadlifts are a gateway to snapping your back in half. It’s actually the opposite, when performed correctly, deadlifts PREVENT injuries by strengthening the muscles around critical tendons and ligaments. - If you can’t deadlift for some reason or you are struggling with proper form, try doing a hex bar deadlift. It’s easier in terms of set up and you don’t have to go so low. A second option is putting plates under the plates on the bar shortening the distance you have to lift the weight. This will decrease the range of motion making it a bit easier to maintain proper form through the lift. - If you haven’t done so already, make sure deadlifts are a part of your current strength training routine. Last week, our team here at UTS began something we have been excited about for a while: we hired a coach. _ For a couple hundred bucks per month for each of us, we now have our workouts written for us each week. _ "But you all are trainers. You can write your own stuff. I don't get it." _ Three reasons: 1. We are now doing exercises we wouldn't normally program in for ourselves, even though we know we need them, we just don't necessarily enjoy them. 2. We get to think less, and work harder. No more meticulously planning out our workouts or nutrition and constantly wondering if we should add more, or take this out, or that. We simply show up, and work hard. 3. Accountability. Last week, I ran two different days for my conditioning work. I then hit a 35 minute hard ass conditioning day on Saturday. I haven't made myself run in my own workouts aside from some jogs here and there the last six months more than once. I always stick to aerobic focused lifting instead. Every day, I get to see the comment thread from my coach and a handful of other trainers talking about how the program went for them that day. If I don't show up, or I half ass the work for the day, it shows. _ Bonus: I get a chance to lift with my team here at UTS. We pushed each other hard last week. We joked and gave each other hard time about slacking here and there. Inevitably we pushed more weight and worked harder with the others around and it gave us a chance to coach each other, something that hasn’t happened as often lately with different schedules and programs. This has now become an investment in not only myself, but my team, and our future. Money was an afterthought. _ Don't discount the value of community and a little skin in the game to make yourself level up in life. _ Big thanks to @jamescerbie for putting the #silverbackproject together. I am pumped to keep learning and lifting.

Just a bit of my back sesh tonight. I was really going for volume tonight. All together I hit 75 reps of dl tonight. Lower back was tight so i didnt want to got to heavy. Here is 495x2x2 and 405x8 a d db rows of 125x10. Song is wow by post malone. ✔
