Throw back to 1yr old #sweetbabyella practicing her ASL numbers with her provincial school branch educator. We've come so far since this video was filmed and I couldn't be prouder of her and more grateful for the deaf community.

Over the past week I’ve shared that this transition has been harder than I’d planned for, and some of you have suggested taking the focus off my myself, and focus on others .... Which is what I’ve been trying to do. 🙆🏼‍♀️ . Meet my friend Brittany. It’s not the first time I’ve talked about her, and probably not the last. Brittany and I met online in a moms group. Usually people who have been inspired by my fitness journey/life on social media, reach out to me. But Brittany inspired ME so much, I had to reach out to her! . ✔️ Single mom (to a deaf toddler) ✔️ Recovering Heroin Addict (almost 3 yrs clean!) ✔️ Real, raw, & honest with herself ✔️ Amazing encourager & heart of gold !! ✔️ Fighter, Survivor ... FRIEND! . She messages me almost weekly (or posts in our online group) progress pics, and shares her triumphs and successes with me. When she shared this transformation pic this week, my jaw dropped and I HAD TO SHARE in my feed!! . This year she’s told me: . “I’m seriously crying Sarah. I was so so so so upset with my life. Before you & beachbody I ate and ate and ate. Like literally I was probably eating food every hour. I was practically eating out everyday. I would mindlessly eat at night every night. I never ever ever worked out. I was so dang bloated, I wasn’t regular at all, I seriously felt like absolute crap. . It’s only been what, 3 months? I started at 129. I now weigh 116. I never thought I would see that number on the scale. And that’s just a bonus. . I LOVE my damn self like seriously LOVE. I get sleep. I have continuously done programs the entire time with barely any rest days ... (Read the rest in the comments below 👇🏻)

——>> uk version below I never just put the CI’s on his head. I always ask first: do you want your ears? In the morning it always takes a while before he agrees, and that’s perfectly fine. When Jackson is not wearing his implants, he still speaks to us, even though he cannot hear himself. We speak back and support our speech with sign language. When it’s really early and I am not quite awake yet, I prefer to just sign. Whatever the situation is, we always manage to communicate and that’s a very comfortable feeling. I think/hope Jackson feels the same way. Any other parents with young CI kids who share this experience? #cochlearimplant #cikids #cochlearimplantkids #deafkids #deaftoddler #lifewithjackson #doofkind #mijnkindisdoof #gebarentaal #ngt #nmt #signlanguage #communication #doof #communicatie #magicears #bionicears

This video has no sound, it is filled with pure #blackgirlmagic as #sweetbabyella signs "hi daddy" At twenty seven months old and she now communicates fluently in her first language, ASL. Often times she uses both English and ASL simultaneously to support native English speakers. . . #lovemesomeher #lovelikebutterflies #daddysgirl #deafculture #deaf #motherdaughter #asl @unionhearingaidcentre @phonak

Every week until shes no longer gives enthusiastic consent to wear her #hearingaids we perform Sunday maintenance: disassemble her hearing aids into all it parts, clean and preform at home maintenance to help keep her hearings in optimal working conditions, adjust the length of her tubes, and add them to a drying beaker to remove an condensation, check and replace her batteries, tighten all the tiny screws then reassemble and test. As a first time parent of a deaf infant this process was wrought with anxiety and fear of losing or breaking one of the tiny parts but two years in and I now find process therapeutic. I do it with love and care knowing that she will likely have a great hearing week filled with #asl, her laughter, repeating new words in her deaf voice and dancing which is her favorite. Happy Monday brought to you by a prepared Sunday #sweetbabyella

Last night's new moon brought with it a level of honesty and clarity I've been yearning for, which left me this morning feeling raw and oh so tender. Then walks in this cutie with a big smile and an open heart, signing "goodmorning mommy" and with it a big juicy kiss. Mothering in the Movement mom Akio Maroon sums up our film’s raison d’être in one beautiful post (below). Revolutionary love, indeed. ✊🏾❤️🙏🏾 #motheringinthemovement ・・・ Repost @akiomaroon Black.Girl.Joy My whole life I've been taught to fight for freedom, for my rights to exist and to live a life worthy of the freedom fighters before me. Through school I've been taught the queen's English and a colonized history rewritten for and by men to make themselves great in the afterlife. But in times like these when Black joy has been criminalized and demonized. When Black laughter is deemed too rowdy for public space and Black dance too vulgar for the human race. Everything about Blackness is being comprised, categorized, policed, confined, stolen and repackaged; But not today. Today I'm taking a mental health day, a Black mental health day, where my only focus is on Black Joy: how to harness it, maintain it, and protect it. I wish there were more days like these. Today is national cochlear implants day. When a parent decides to implant their child it’s a big decision, but we are so so glad we took the jump and went for it. James loves hearing with his new ears!! Even more than he loves stickers on faces. 👂🏼💞 #cochlearimplants #deaftoddler

Hooray for the bionic ears, it’s international cochlear implant day! I remember I was so afraid of these devices being on his head and now it’s strange to see him without them. Still very thankful for the technology being available to us and the team at UZA that did and still does a great job. Jackson will start school in a few months, regular school with hearing kids. A huge challenge, but he’s eager to learn and ready for the next step. • • • • • #internationalcochlearimplantday #cochlearimplant #cochlearimplantkids #cikids #medel #uza #bionicears #magicears #deafkids #deaftoddler #toddlerwithci #tooradtoobesad #yesican

Happy National Cochlear Implant Day! If you’re like us, you probably never heard about CIs before you met someone who needed them. If you’re still unsure about what they are exactly or how they work, never hesitate to ask questions! We love to spread knowledge and awareness and look forward to the day when Cochlear Implants are as understood as glasses, prosthetics or other common medical necessities. We are so thankful for this amazing technology that gives our Hadlee girl the chance to hear and speak 👂🗣🤟🏼 #deaftoddler #cochlearimplantday #cochlearamerica #cochlearimplant #hadleejune #hadleehears

This little firecracker had her 1-year post activation testing done today at CHOP and although the day didn’t go as smoothly as anticipated (thanks to a faulty alarm mixed with Philly traffic), she continued to amaze everyone with how great she’s doing. The test is a government issued scantron test to determine where she falls in relation to her hearing peers aged 2-3 (so she’s being tested against typically developing kids, most of whom are older than her.) Hadlee not only tested on par with those peers with her speaking and listening, but on the high side of average! So proud of all of the hard work she put in to get to this point. We will still continue with therapies and keep a close eye on how her speech progresses because listening and speaking is always going to be something that she will need to work harder on than those without hearing loss. But for now, we keep going forward and celebrate every victory! We have officially been cleared to only have to go to CHOP for speech and audiology every 6 months instead of every 3 (yay!) We’ve come a long way from the days of wondering whether Hadlee would ever be able to hear or speak. Thanking God for showing his mercies at every turn in the road and showing us a first-hand miracle. Especially thankful for blessing us with this extra special little soul. She’s the best gift I never knew I needed 💞 Thank you all for reading and following our story, I think the Lord has big plans for this sweet chick, I’m so lucky to be her momma 🐣 #cochlearimplant #cochlearamerica #deaftoddler #hadleejune #hadleehears

Big morning! We visited a special daycare for deaf and hearing impaired children. I’ve been looking forward to this step, so curious to see how Jackson would interact with the other kids, and the caregivers that use sign language. He was a bit distant at first, normal I guess, just wanted to play with all the cars and trains, chatting along the way. But soon he was painting a Christmas angel with the other kids, playing with the play doh and decorating the Christmas tree. Sat down for snacktime, sharing his apple with a new friend. He high fived the caregivers on his way out so I guess we will be back soon. • • • • • #specialneedskids #deafkids #cochlearimplantkids #toddlerwithci #specialdaycare #mydeafson #deaftoddler #signlanguage #momlife #ushermom

There will always be people looking at Jackson implants and that’s fine, I don’t mind. But I rather have them asking about it than just stare. It was remarkable that in Bali the people were curious but also very interested. Of course a little blond guy with blue eyes is quite the attraction over there, but the things on his head raised a lot of eyebrows. People came to us and asked very politely, almost apologetically, what is was. And it was not just the Balinese, a lot of Australians came up to us as well but they knew perfectly well that Jackson was wearing Cochlear Implants. It was after all an Australian professor, Graeme Clark, that invented the first Cochlear implant. Nice to see and hear that the Aussies are so proud of this invention. Travelling is about meeting new people and sharing experiences, so happy to have had Jackson with us. • • • • • #cochlearimplant #cochlearimplantkids #deafkids #deafkidsrock #cikids #deaftoddler #toddlerwithci #travel #bali #indonesia #newpeople #newexperiences #dontbeafraidtoask #graemeclark #australiansdoitbetter @cochlear_global

During our morning walk. Taking time to stop and sing and sign a song to him. He is talking so much right now, it’s hard to keep focussing on sign language. But it has helped him come so far, we need to keep doing it. People ask us why, because our son can hear now right? With his cochlear implants Jackson is still hearing impaired. And without them he is still deaf. Verbal communication is important and will help him further is this world, but signing will allow him to communicate at all times, with his peers, in his own language. We should treasure that. • • • • • #cochlearimplant #cochlearimplantkids #deafkids #deafkidsrock #deafculture #deaftoddler #instamom #instatoddler #signlanguage #signformom #deafpride #morningwalk #autumn
