My ancestors were born in Russia and Europe, and I was born in Chicago. That means I'm a settler here in California. I didn't ask anyone's permission when I moved. I didn't think about how my moving might impact those already here. I was and I am privileged by a system and society that tell me not to worry about those things. That tell me I don't have to consider those who were here before. The original people of this land, the Nisenan of the Nevada City Rancheria, were almost entirely wiped out during the gold rush of the 1800s, as a result of European settlement and the arrival of institutions that [in the best of cases] paid no importance to those who were here before or [in the worst of cases] actively tried to destroy the Native People and their culture. If we allow ourselves to imagine what the world would look like if we took care to consider our impact and honor what comes before us, we see how things could have been different, should have been different, and how to start actively MAKING them different. For example, check out the Ancestral Homelands Reciprocity Program: this community-based initiative invites Nevada City residents to acknowledge that we are settlers here in Nisenan territory, that we've indirectly benefited from their great suffering, and that we can and should take steps to support the Tribe and ensure that they can once again thrive in their own home. A monthly or annual offering to the 501c3 CHIRP - California Heritage: Indigenous Research Project is like a way of paying "rent" to the Nisenan for living on their land. In addition, you can help them in their campaign to regain federal recognition. More info at Nisenan.org. Thank you to the @sogoreatelandtrust and #realrentduwamish for your local programs that inspired this one. #honor #indigenous #land @nevadacityrancherianisenan #ancestry #decolonize #ancestralhomelands #ancestralhomelandsreciprocityprogram

The Pacific Northwest is a mushroom garden! This vast queendom of medicine and mystery will forever enchant me. The crown-tipped coral fungus is edible and choice. Many shelf mushrooms are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as toners, longevity aids, and cancer treatments. It's time to start reintegrating fungi into our lives! Plus they're the cutest queers in the woods! We didn't bring the bus up to Oregon this time, but we'll bring some of the fungi and plant medicines back to process for educational and healing purposes. Happy Full Moon Eclipse! January 22 of 1932, a peasant revolt led by Agustin Farabundo Marti, was crushed by the Salvadoran military. The rebellion was a mixture of protest and insurrection which ended in ethnocide. The army killed anyone who looked like a Nahua-Pipil nearly exterminating the Pipil culture of El Salvador in a massacre estimated to have taken between 10,000 and 30,000 lives. During “La Matanza” anyone wearing indigenous dress or anyone simply thought to be associated with the rebellion was shot. In some cases, whole villages disappeared. Exact figures have never been known, but the death toll is estimated between 10,000 and 30,000 people. The dictatorship insisted that only 2000 were killed. For El Salvador’s indigenous population, the effects of the massacre went far beyond the immediate death toll. As it became increasingly dangerous to be identified as "indio"("Indian"), traditional dress, language and customs largely disappeared. José Feliciano Ama (1881 – February 28, 1932) was an indigenous peasant leader, a Pipil from Izalco in El Salvador, who participated and died in the 1932 Salvadoran peasant uprising. In the early morning of January 22, 1932 Feliciano Ama lead the Pipil peasants of Izalco into the uprising against the landlords. The criollo controlled goverment of El Salvador had taken away the access to their communal lands from indigenous people which then were appropriated by private landowners. In the early morning of January 22, 1932 Feliciano Ama lead the Pipil peasants of Izalco into the uprising against the landlords. With several hundred supporters he marched to the capital of the department Sonsonate. There the mayor was killed by insurgents from Juayúa, but landlords accused Ama, who fled into the hills of Izalco. There he was found by soldiers from the garrison of Izalco under commander Cabrera, captured and hanged in the center of Izalco. This morning I was in my meditation and visualization practice and started sobbing as I saw myself telling an audience of ppl abt how my grandmother taught me the value of supplemental material. She would say to my 6 year old self, “Where do you find this?” “What is the proof?” “What’s another scripture that affirms this?” My grandmother taught me the value of critical thinking. She made me Make lesson plans for my Sunday School class (I was S I X), and she helped me created prompts and questions that would guide my students further in the discussion. I sat there visualizing this moment where I got to tell hundreds and thousands of people about my grandmother being the reason for my Decolonization work - when I started crying even harder because I thought abt what her mother would think of me. 😍😩🥰 Which lead me to thinking about how every round goes higher and higher and I wondered what will my nieces and little cousins do with the advantage they have from standing on my shoulders as I stand on my mom, her mom, and her mom’s shoulders? Heaven so high you can’t go over, so low you can’t go under, so wide you can’t go around - but with the prayers of a grandmother you can absolutely come in through any door you walk towards and command to open! #emmaslegacy . . . I’ve been teaching all my life. It will be a major part of my legacy. I’m teaching monthly in my Patreon community. I’m abt that supplemental material life, most recently I’m sharing Basquiat photos and commentary as a way to discuss the slave trade and contemporary response to injustice in our art. The army killed anyone who looked "Indian" nearly exterminating the Pipil culture of El Salvador in a massacre estimated to have taken 40,000+ lives. The genocide lasted for 3 days and included Mayan, Chuj, Pipil, Lenca, etc. Children, Women, and woman were murdered in cold blood JUST BECAUSE OF THEIR CULTURE and Race. During “La Matanza” anyone wearing indigenous dress or anyone simply thought to be associated with the rebellion was shot. In some cases, whole villages disappeared. Exact figures have never been known, but the death toll is estimated between 10,000 and 40,000 people. The dictatorship, ruled by Maximiliano Hernández Martínez, lied stating that only 2000 were killed. For El Salvador’s indigenous population, the effects of the massacre went far beyond the immediate death toll. As it became increasingly dangerous to be identified as indio (Indian), traditional dress, language and customs largely disappeared. This in turn led people to abandon tradition and customs and trade it in for assimilation and exploitation. This was a silent ethnocide with effects still felt to this day. tattooed by the legendary Apo Whang Od 🙏🏾 🇵🇭the oldest Kalinga tattoo artist to hold the title of Mambabatok – the tattoo master. and by her grandniece Elyang who is a young master herself • tattoos in the philippines became taboo after many years of cultural assassination / colonization. today im honored to be a beneficiary of this once sacred indigenous practice. tattoos were traditionally given as a badge of honor in warrior tribes in the philippines such as the Ifugao and the Kalinga. and many believed of their tattoos as talismans or reflections of esoteric patterns. before colonization, we considered this an important way to express diff stages of life and death, and philosophical ideals of the tribe ⛰✨ #crying#decolonize #indigenous #kalingatattoo #apowhangod #tattooedbywhangod #tattooedbyelyang #philippines #cordilleramountains

Today marks 13 years since Evo Morales became Bolivia's president. Around March 22, 2015 Evo stated the following: The president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, said today that Barack Obama "when he says that Venezuela is a threat to his security he is wrong", because in reality" it is considered that all the peoples of the 'Patria Grande' are a threat to the capitalist system and because they can not steal from us like before ", in" this path of liberation that we have undertaken ". "El presidente de Bolivia, Evo Morales, aseguró hoy que Barack Obama “cuando dice que Venezuela es una amenaza a su seguridad se equivoca”, porque en realidad “considera que todos los pueblos de la Patria Grande somos una amenaza al sistema capitalista y porque ya no nos pueden robar como antes”, en “este camino de liberación que hemos emprendido”." Here are some of the many achievements of Evo's Nican Tlacatl (Native) goverment: - 1,061 health facilities & 34 large hospitals - 1,206 schools - 5,000+ kilometers of roads - GDP growth of 327% - Quadrupled minimum wage - strong food security policies: rapid decline of hunger by 7.4 percent during 2009-2011 and 2012-2014. 41.7 percent in 1989 to 18.5 percent in 2012. -recognized the traditional uses of the coca leaf for the first time in Bolivian history. -reduced extreme poverty from 38.2 percent in 2005 to 21.6 percent in 2012. FIRST INDIGENOUS MEXICAN actress to be nominated and only second Mexican actress after Salma Hayek to be nominated for this role! When I saw her sitting at that Golden Globes table something in my brain sparked it was an incredible feeling where I recognized her Brown soil embedded skin glowing against her dark black hair because I had seen that in the mirror my whole life and for the first time I could see it in a setting like that. At 32 I felt this... I can't imagine what it would feel like to see it at such a young age and to know what IS possible. If you go to her account, you see the moment when she sees her name nominated as Leading Actress. I couldn't help but to burst into tears with her because she represents the little Morenita women who often go unnoticed because of the deep rooted Colorism that lives in our Mexican culture. I’m one of the many Filipinos of my generation wanting to bring back and preserve these pieces of our culture before they are all forgotten 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭 I take traditional Filipino pieces of clothing that has been passed down in my family, specially from the Cordilleras where my family is from, and style them in a modern way 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭 Here I styled @ryssacakes415 in a “tapis,” an indigenous piece of handwoven clothing traditionally worn as a wraparound skirt by the women in the Cordilleran region of the Philippines.

It's the 46th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. For 46 years, we've had the right to choose. We may not make it to 47--but just like our foremothers, we'll make a hell of a lot of noise for everyone with reproductive abilities to have agency over their reproductive freedom. Those before you weren't this loud so you could be quiet. Listen to your mother--she, and so many powerful activists alongside her, knew best. #saveroe . . Art: @KendrickDaye | Words: @honeyhuckle

#repost @sapoctable with @get_repost ・・・ Say hello to presenter and moderator @prospearl 🍷 Pearl Oliver is the resort sommelier at Reuben's at the One & Only hotel and national chair of BLACC, the Black Cellar Club. 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷 🍷🍷🍷 Pearl shared this with us: 1. It is extremely important for us to honour and recognise that success doesn't have to mean just owning a business. I see a conference like this establishing a network for those who would like to grow or diversify the craft. 🍸🍸🍸🍸🍸🍸🍸🍸🍸🍸🍸🍸🍸🍸🍸🍸 2. I'm inspired by Siba Mtongana @sibamtongana - mother, wife and business owner. She has an intense drive for both business and family and found a way to incorporate both in her everyday lifestyle. Ingrid Jones ( @jonesingrid ) is a powerhouse of a woman who stands for loyalty to her country and believes it sharing new honestly. She is feisty while remaining a great role model. I love to refer to her has my winemother! 👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾 3. There has already been a major transformation in the wine industry since more POC have been trained in the industry and more POC have been opening businesses ranging from winemaking to bars, small restaurant and diners. 🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂 4. People may not know this, but I do not drink expensive Champagne every day! When I started more than 15-years-ago, POC didn't think anyone could make an honest and honourable career of it. It was hard and I had to prove myself and get buy-in from my family too. The industry I work in changes constantly and one has to continually sharpen one's skills. We need more POC to step into positions of ownership where possible. 👩🏾‍💼👩🏾‍💼👩🏾‍💼👩🏾‍💼👩🏾‍💼👩🏾‍💼👩🏾‍💼👩🏾‍💼👩🏾‍💼👩🏾‍💼👩🏾‍💼👩🏾‍💼👩🏾‍💼👩🏾‍💼👩🏾‍💼👩🏾‍💼 Insta & Twitter: @Prospearl & Linkedin https://za.linkedin.com/in/pearl-oliver-49aa5b37 #travelnoire #blackexcellence #blackgirlmagic #sommelier #somm #indigenous #indigenousfood #foodhistory #foodsovereignty #decolonize #sapoctable #equality #foodmedia #kitchens #consciouskitchen #womeninwine #blackwomeninbusiness #winelover

As all of you know, my family and I travelled to Washington D.C this past Friday to partake in the #indigenouspeoplesmarch. Along the way we met an assortment of incredible and powerful people. This photo was published in @unearthwomen this morning. ⭐️ follow link in bio⭐️ For myself, the indigenous peoples march, this year, was a moment of waking up. Being around so many different indigenous people from so many different places lit a fire inside me which simultaneously has warmed my heart and reminded me of the love that I have for my people (and when I say my people I mean all indigenous people) and of the importance of being unashamedly myself. pc: @stephanieflor #indigenouspeoplesmarch #indigenize #taina #wetsuweten #ipmdc19 #decolonize #decolonizeyourmind #mmiw #nomorestolensisters #nowall #immigrantsmakeamericagreat #makeamericanativeagain #notmypresident #family
