The Vallelunga had made its mark, but in order for De Tomaso to be a financially stable company, Alejandro knew that production would have to increase. His 1967 acquisition of Carrozzeria Ghia, combined with the reception of the Vallelunga, encouraged him to develop a car that could run against the big guns of the Italian supercar world. The Mangusta was the result. Towards the end of 1965, Alejandro decided to tackle one of the main complaints of the Vallelunga - its lack of power. With a Carroll Shelby-sourced 289ci (4.7-litre) Ford V8 and Pete Brock-designed exterior (in collaboration with Medardo Fantuzzi), De Tomaso debuted the 70P at the 1965 Turin Motor Show, by which time Carroll was long gone, turning his efforts to the struggling Ford GT40 project. Only one 70P was ever built, but the mechanical platform did not go to waste. Around this time, Giorgetto Giugiaro had designed a car and pitched it to Iso, who rejected it on the grounds of them not wanting a mid-engined configuration. To Alejandro, this seemed like the perfect mechanical marriage and the Mangusta - Italian for ‘mongoose’, so named as they kill cobras in the wild - was born. Compared to the Vallelunga, the Mangusta was much larger and much less conventional; gullwing doors were adopted for the engine compartment and rear storage areas. Under the bonnet, the Ford V8 brought a much-desired 305 bhp to the table, which, when mated to a ZF five-speed transaxle, allowed it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in seven seconds, and onto a top speed of 155 mph. This was the grunt people had been asking for, but it came at a cost. Despite again having all-independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, the 32/68 weight distribution and weak chassis meant that the Mangusta performed poorly at best - in fact, an owner described it as ‘the only car that can have understeer and oversteer at the same time!’. It was beautiful, it sounded incredible, and it was powerful, but it had some inherent flaws. Only 401 Mangustas were produced between 1967 and 1971, an estimated 250 of which were the 302-powered North American version.

In 1955, Argentine Alejandro de Tomaso fled his native country to escape the harsh political climate. Settling in Modena, Italy, he began a racing career driving for such teams as Maserati, Scuderia Centro Sud (a Ferrari privateer in 1957) and Automobili O.S.C.A. However, in 1959, he founded the De Tomaso car company, originally to build prototypes and racing cars of his own. An ambitious individual, de Tomaso had dreamt of also designing road cars, so the development of his first started in 1962. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Styled and constructed by Carrozzeria Fissore, the Vallelunga prototypes - three in total - used aluminium bodies and first appeared circa 1963, with a name referencing the famous Italian circuit where de Tomaso himself had raced with some success. Under the skin, the Vallelunga clearly displayed Alejandro’s racing background - a Lotus-esque backbone chassis combined with a tuned, mid-mounted Ford Kent engine were used, with the latter acting as a stressed chassis member; therefore the combination of drivetrain vibration and inconsistent Italian welding became a problem for the production cars. The suspension was also racing-derived, using an independent setup on each corner comprising double wishbones and coil springs, with supplementary front and rear anti-roll bars. Braking was by four-wheel discs. Initially, de Tomaso had wanted a major manufacturer to adopt the Vallelunga as their own, but this never arrived, so the decision was made to produce them under his own brand, with construction handled by Carrozzeria Ghia - a company he would later purchase. Giorgetto Giugiaro was asked to pen the bodywork, which was now manufactured from fibreglass, and the production car debuted in 1964. The design clearly had some Ferrari inspiration, and despite not having as exotic a powertrain, it could almost match the performance; 0-60 mph came in around seven seconds and the driver would reach the end of the gearing at a claimed 130 mph. With Weber carburettors, the engine produced 105 bhp, which made it a strong competitor on the track, but only an estimated 50 road cars were ever produced. De Tomaso then turned his sights to the successor, the Mangusta.

De Tomaso’s Nuova Pantera broke cover in 1991, and was in many ways equal or superior to Ferrari’s then current 348. Santiago De Tomaso was running the company at the time, and he told me the chassis and suspension was all new when compared to the earlier Panteras. He also said the 5.0-liter Ford V8 had been balanced and blueprinted, and had a hopped up cam. The smoothness of that engine, and the way it came alive once it crossed 3000 rpm, had me believing the claim. The chassis was nice and rigid, the ride quite compliant. For these reasons and more, in today’s marketplace the Nuova Pantera is considerably more pricey than its 348 and 355 competitors. De Tomaso Pantera GT5 (1980-1991) . Beautiful to behold and thrilling to drive on public roads, yet equally competitive in motorsport. DeTomaso introduced the GT5 version of the Panteta in 1980. This latest version came with wide-body styling, better brakes, larger wheels and an overall higher level of comfort, performance and style. The stance is low and wide, with a nose that curves towards the ground in a graceful arc from a heavily slanted windshield. The roofline pushes the rear end out with forceful proportions that scream mid-engine performance. Viewed from the rear, the wide tires and quad exhaust back this assertion, complemented by a flattened tail that closely parallels the ground. The GT5 is powered by a 5766çc Ford unit capable of 310hp, this V8 put it's power down through a ZF 5-speed manual transmission.
