Who is there to celebrate with you when you succeed? Having support when we reach our dreams and accomplish our goals is just as important as having support when difficult times occur. All to often though we find ourselves unable to share our good moments. So ask yourself, who can you turn to when you reach the top? Spend time with those people more often and if you found that difficult perhaps it’s time to reassess your relationships. Positive relationships are a fundamental aspect to growing your mental garden 🌱

Tunnel vision 🛤 Do you ever feel “stuck” or “trapped” in your feelings? Like you can’t stop worrying about something or feel like you’ve lost control of your emotions? . . How about making up a little emotional/mental health first aid kit? Something you can reach for in those times when you need that emotional “band-aid”. . . One of the things I help my young clients with ASD and anxiety do, is to fill up little shoe boxes or draw pictures of the things they love to do to help them feel calm and safe. . . Lots of things can go in there like; a photo of a friend or family member who always gives the best hugs, a favourite book, a bath bomb, a candle, a favourite fidget toy, colouring pencils, cards with suggested activities like “walk”, “playground” or even just “3 ling breaths out” etc. . . This fist aid kit doesn’t “fix” the source of the problem which triggered the stress or anxiety but it does provide a little respite and help the mind to refocus. Once we are out of the “rut” we can start thinking a little more clearly and hopefully will be in a much better place to be able to address the bigger problem at hand. . . What would you put into your “emotional first aid kit”? Do you think you would find this helpful? . . #emotionalwellbeing #emotionalregulation #emotionalhealth #feelings #emotions #selfregulation #focus #reset #mentalwellbeing #mentalhealth #wellbeing #healthymind #emotionalintelligence

An unpolished diamond isn’t much to look at. But, with each polish, and each cut, the beauty begins to shine through. It has to go through a process, and be refined, in order to reveal what is ALREADY there. ⠀ ⠀ Just like the diamond, you already are the person you want to be.⠀ ⠀ You ARE a patient and loving mother.⠀ ⠀ You ARE adventurous and fun.⠀ ⠀ You ARE capable.⠀ ⠀ You ARE worthy.⠀ ⠀ The decisions and choices that you make are like the polishes and cuts on a diamond- they reveal what is already there. ⠀ ⠀ Let your choices and decisions be reflective of your true self and you will be amazed at the beauty that is revealed. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #letthembelittle #therapy #childtherapist #selflove #mentalhealth #playtherapy #parenting #love #psychologist #stress #childpsychology #psychology #narrativetherapy #therapist #kids #mindfulness #childdevelopment #inspire #familytherapy #children #selfcare #counseling #consciousparenting #positivediscipline #emotionalregulation #orangecounty #ocmom #lakeforest #orangecountymoms

Meltdown number what feels like 275 today. Definitely not our best day. This mama is burnt out and needs a do over. Things go from high to low in a snap. It is exhausting. This is the reality of most days. The struggles of raising a high needs, special needs child. We haven't found our stride. Haven't found what works best. So it feels like we are sinking most days, as I flounder to try and support him best I can. #imjustlogan #autism #sensoryseeker #spd #grief #trauma #ptsd #childhoodcancersibling #meltdown #emotionalregulation

Oh friends. I can’t even. This little book was written with love on a hope and a dream. 💛 Our hope was to sell 1,000 copies this year. To date (six weeks after we released it), our wildest dreams are coming true as we have sold almost 9,000 copies of Kids These Days. This week I’ve done interviews with amazing souls in Slovenia and Australia. Bookstores across Alberta (even @chaptersreddeer) have hard copies on the shelf (a big deal for us self-publishers)! 🎉 If you’ve read it, or if you do someday, I’d love to hear your thoughts - what was helpful and what I missed. Processing through emotions in a way that does more “good” rather than “harm” is a sign of emotional maturity. We can often use emotions (whether our own or another’s) to trap others, to manipulate others, or to get our needs and wants met without having actually taken the time to build a relationship based on trust and mutual agreement. How can we learn how to mature our inner child so we are no longer using our emotions to do more harm? How do you process your emotional understanding in a way that creates a greater source of emotional maturity? How can you model this behavior to assist others who may not be working with emotions in a helpful way? #jujubedoula #innerchildhealing #emotionalmaturity #healingemotions #emotionalregulation

Emotional regulation is essentially the ability to navigate your experience within a range of emotions that is optimal to self expression as well as within a way that is not doing harm to another person. It is the ability to allow for spontaneous emotional responses as well as the ability to delay emotional responses as needed. It is also the ability to process, monitor, evaluate and modify based on circumstances. This can be intrinsic or extrinsic. Essentially this is “working with emotions”, both your own and others. How do you work with emotions? Are you able to use your emotions in a positive way without judgment of those emotions? If so, what are your techniques? How do you regulate your emotions? Are you operating from a space of wholeness by allowing all of your emotions to express? If not, how can you work to create sacred space to practice greater emotional mastery? #emotionalmastery #jujubedoula #emotionalregulation #selfmastery #energyhealing

It can be difficult to tell if someone is self-harming; however, here are some signs to look out for that might suggest someone could be self-harming. Individuals that self-harm struggle to cope with difficult feelings and typically experience overwhelming emotional pain and describe it as a build up of internal pressure. An example of inappropriate clothing may be wearing long sleeves in hot weather possibly to hide marks on the skin. To know about risk factors, common misconceptions, and much more, please check out ‘the truth about self harm’: https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/publications/truth-about-self-harm Please note: This is not an exhaustive list. If you or someone you know is inflicting harm to themselves, I urge you to consider speaking to a professional. You are NOT alone! #mentalhealthawareness#selfharm#selfharmaware#selfinjury#marchawarenessmonth#warningsigns#earlysigns#recognize#emotionalpain#struggles#support#selfesteem#depression#anxiety#bpd#eatingdisorders#bodyimage#trauma#emotionalregulation#youarenotalone#recovery#recoveryispossible#dbt#coping#skills#learnhealthycopingstrategies#psychology#mentalhealthlebanon#worldmentalhealth#nicoleraisingawareness

How do we learn how to master our emotional nature? Listen to my videos to begin a process of emotional mastery for your self, which will support you in much deeper ways than you could imagine. We chatted recently about how it's not feelings themselves that are the problem in us learning how to deal with them.  It's labeling the feelings as bad or intolerable that creates more of the issue. So one thing that can be helpful in learning how to tolerate a greater variety of emotions is uncovering what your unhelpful thoughts are about your feelings. So here are some examples.  Sometimes people think: This is intolerable. This is stupid.  I gotta make this go away. I can't handle this.  I just can't handle it. This is too uncomfortable.  It's gonna make me go crazy. If you have thoughts like that or similar thoughts, those thoughts might be getting in the way of you learning how to tolerate feelings, so see if you can uncover them.  More on this later. #masteryourmh #acceptance #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy #emotionalregulationskills #emotionalregulation #feelyourfeelings #healthycopingskills #avoidavoiding #emotionalwellness #emotionalhealthsupport #emotionalhealthissuesmatter #moderntherapy #mentalhealthovereverydamnthing #mentalhealthisimportant #positivepsychology #mentalhealthamerica #simplepleasure #youmatter #positivity #moreselflove #mindbodysoul #stopthestigma #stopthestigmamentalhealth #spreadawareness #healthycopingskills #selfhelptools #mentalhealthtips #mentalhealthatwork #mentalhealthadvocates #mentalhealthwarriors

Children are like little sponges. They soak up everything that's going on around them so it's vitally important for them to learn and grow in positive environments that encourage and support. . Educators are very switched on and aware of the influence they have on little hearts and minds. We're so pleased to see so many schools now using social and emotional learning programs to nurture wellbeing and mental health. . We make it easy for educators to grow emotional intelligence and self-esteem by providing an evidence-based, whole school approach to SEL. 🌾🌱✨Gratitude exercise: “Rose, Bud, Thorn”🌾🌱✨ •It is helpful for the whole family to participate. Try doing so around the dinner table and setting the screens down for a moment. See if you can add this in as a daily practice. Gratitude helps strengthen the positive part of the brain, boosts and builds positive interaction, creates bonding moments, and improves recall or social skills while working on listening, taking turns, and empathy for others perceptions. 🌹Rose= naming favorite or best part of the day [if you or your child struggle to see a positive moment, your rose can be the least bad thing that occurred that day, but will strengthen the positive parts of your brain to be alert and active in finding positives] 🌹Thorn = least favorite or worst part of day [If you or your child tend to minimize or dismiss things that went wrong or perhaps your child lacks the awareness or permission to name negatives, they can name the thing that was decent but not the *best* part while they get used to scaling and ranking daily events] 🌹Bud= Naming something you or your child look forward to. With some of my older clients (7+) they can also try to name something they have control over to make tomorrow positive. 🌱TIP: Parents, please do not make your rose or bud be something the child did. It may put pressure on them to take responsibility for your rose moments or feel shameful for being your thorn moment. Have your own rose, bud, thorn moments. It is okay if the rose or bud moments are group activities, but try to avoid it being something just the child did. •EXAMPLE: My rose was when I got to have my favorite breakfast, my thorn was when I got a flat tire, and my bud is making plans with a friend to catch up. • • #gratitude#dailygratitude#zolacounseling#playtherapy#playislearning#playtherapyworks#childtherapy#positiveparenting#attachment#positivediscipline#childdevelopment#regulation#emotionalregulation#coregulation#bewithattitudes#mindfulparenting#mindfulkids• #mindfulness• #connectbeforeyoucorrect #mecklenburgcounty#charlottenc#charlottetherapist#charlottetherapy#charlottechild

Reposted from @sitwithwhit - I used to feel like if I wasn’t worrying about something, I didn’t care about it. Worry meant that it was important. So false. Worrying is a form of procrastination. It’s almost addictive. If we’re worrying, we feel like we’re doing something. But really we’re doing nothing. Worrying is not planning. It can be suffocating, paralyzing, and leave you completely unprepared. This one boggles my mind when I really think about it. Most of us weren't taught the most fundamental and important tools needed to navigate the world with a sense of safety, security and wellbeing. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ We are an emotional species and learning to regulate our nervous systems and process feelings are as important as learning how to properly eat and control our bowels. Truly! ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Want freedom, safety and real control? Learn emotional self-regulation and co-regulation. It just takes practice. And it also takes someone who knows the way. You didn't learn to brush your teeth, ride a bike or tie your shoes on your own. You can't learn this on your own either. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ If you have someone helping you, that's amazing! Keep going, you're doing great. If you are still in need of a coach or therapist or have been trying to do it on your own and it isn't working, click on the link in my bio @sarahbcoaching for a free first session. You can do this and your life will be so much better because of it. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #emotionalregulation #selfregulation #coregulation #therapy #selfhelp #growthmindset #lifecoach #lifecoaching #lifecoachforwomen #yoga #meditation #mindfulness #mentalhealth #purpose #god #transformational #transformationalquotes #spiritualityquotes #spirituality #selfhelpquotes #fridayquotes #friday

Distraction-Noise-avoidance. Usually a cure all is only a temporary fix. AND emotional regulation is not a one-stop fix. Life is busy no doubt but think carefully about how distractions, noise and avoidance creep in and disrupt your ability to self-regulate. It’s the weekend! If there is any chance to crave out some down time don’t waste it. Below are 3 more ways to practice the art of optimism (which is linked to increased activity in the prefrontal cortex). If this pessimist can implement them, so can you! ••• SILVER LINING What is the good that can be found in this bad situation or season? What is the good that can come from this bad situation or season? Finding the silver lining doesn’t have to mean you ignore the bad or invalidate your negative emotions. Bad days happen, in our brains or in our external circumstances. It is an unavoidable part of life. As hard as we work on our mental health, there will still sometimes be times where we feel super stressed, overly anxious, or just down in the dumps. Finding the silver lining can balance the scales a bit whenever that happens. ••• BEST CASE SCENARIO There is a time and place for imagining the worst case scenario. However, jumping to the worst case scenario all the time and setting up camp there is not good for anyone! Instead, ask yourself questions like What could go right? or How could this all come together? or It is possible things could go like this [insert ideal way here]. You start to see how many other outcomes are possible other than the one you’re dreading. ••• WHERE DID YOU FEEL ______? Reflect on what you want to feel more of in your life. It could be something like peace, freedom, rest, creativity, confidence, or joy. Then, at the end of the day think back and identify where it is you felt some form of that thing, no matter how small. It doesn’t have to me monumental stuff. It could be as simple as how wonderful it felt when you held your warm cup of tea in the morning or the smile you exchanged with someone. This will help you see many elements of your "ideal life" are accessible right now and can help you brainstorm ways to feel more of what you want. ••• How do you practice optimism? Or, how do you plan on trying to? ••• Instagram posts have character limits, so for 3 more tips + to go a little deeper into each one check out my latest blog post (link in bio)! ••• Alissa

Sitting with discomfort is not an easy task. In our microwave world today we have been conditioned to rail against any form of discomfort. We distract ourselves from anything seemingly unpleasant through the use and abuse of food, alcohol, drugs, video gaming, sex, spending, work, relationships etc. No one person has ever died of discomfort. However, the desire to remain comfortable has dissolved many opportunities, ideas and occasions for personal growth to arise. Today I will give myself permission to be uncomfortable and begin the process of self - soothing with healthy alternatives. In my discomfort, my personal growth will unfold. . . . . . #wellness #therapy #wellbeing #depression #anxiety #eating disorders #womensissues #addictions #stageoflifetransitions #transitions #transition #addiction #couplestherapy #mindfulness #emotionalregulation #patience #acceptance #discomfort #befearless #itsoktonotbeok #selfsoothe

You can experience the rainbow of emotions by breathing conscious connected way. When you start breathing, emotions and feelings stored in your subconscious will come up to the conscious awareness. In doing so, you will lessen their intensity and your distress. As a result , you will learn to tolerate them better. Then you will be in a better position to nurture a close relationship by communicating them to your partner in a productive way. #emotionalregulation #transformationalbreath #breaththerapy #coupletherapy #hearttohearttalk #consciousconnectedbreathing #wellnessandfitness #mindfulness

Friday Feels!⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ Children are their feelings and as early childhood teachers, our role is to be a container for those feelings! By carrying some of the weight, we tell the child, 'I am feeling this with you and we can deal with it together until you are able to "feel and deal" with it independently'. All feelings have a place and sometimes children just need to know that it is okay to have all the feels! ⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #play #earlyyears #earlyyears #earlychildhood #naughty #parenting #eyfs #children #childhood #curriculum #teaching #reception #teachers #childdevelopment #parentinghacks #parentingtips #eyfs #independence #playtime #toddlers #preschool #babies #playtime #eyfs #reggio #montessori #emotionalregulation #feelings #wellbeing #mentalhealth⁣

GENERALISED ANXIETY - "If a problem is fixable, if a situation is such that you can do something about it, then there is no need to worry. If it's not fixable, then there is no help in worrying. There is no benefit in worrying whatsoever.” ― The Dalai Lama People with generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) experience several mental, emotional and physical symptoms, including: Excessive and unreasonable worry over events or activities, such as work, school or health Excessive worry about their capacity and confidence to deal with situations. Inability to control or stop their worrying Feelings of apprehension Tension Restlessness or feeling keyed up or on edge Easily fatigued Problems with concentration or having their mind go blank Irritability Shallow, uneven breathingincrease in heart rate and blood pressure Feeling nauseous or sick Trembling and shaking Sleep disturbance (eg. difficulty falling or staying asleep, or restless unsatisfying sleep). Treatments that are helpful for alleviating GAD include a variety of psychological therapies and medications. A combination of cognitive behaviour therapy, anxiety management techniques and improving physical wellness has been found to be successful in bringing GAD symptoms under control. Medication is sometimes used as a short-term strategy to relieve anxiety symptoms. Photo: "Sky is the Limit", Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe 2019. 🗣LET’S TALK EMOTIONAL REGULATION: I use different approaches and strategies to support emotional regulation, depending on how the child learns best. This little guy is all about drawing ✍️ and numbers 🔢 and so we are using the “incredible 5-point scale” as one tool to talk about what to do when sometimes “you feel like you want to boof!” 🥊 Love how much thinking this little guy did to pull this visual reminder for home 🏠 and school 🏫. Writing is tricky for this kiddo, so we took turns writing to extend activity engagement #turntakingpractice ✅ The reward was he got to laminate his artwork at the end (kids love laminating!🤣 And I love it because it means the visual sticks around 👏🏼) Shout out to his awesome teacher too, who is using this scale for the whole class to check in with each other throughout the day 🙏 #teacheroftheyear #emotionalregulation #wholeclassapproach #autism #adhd #sensoryprocessingdisorder #speechpathology #socialthinking #turntaking #thekidcandraw

For those of you who know my love of Brene Brown, it will come as no surprise that I learned this idea from her. And then added my little twist. The leaders in my world who I respect the most rarely let “sleeping dogs lie”. There is such significant importance when developing a solid team to talk about stuff when it doesn’t feel good. Disagreement is part of every single relationship that matters. Making sure you make space to excavate the stuff that remains unsaid - to make sense of it - separates the good from the great. Every time. xo 💛 #kidsthesedays #gamechanger #reconnection

All the yes! Learning to allow, to sit with, to experience, and to understand will always be the answer, as hard as it may be.. and believe me, sometimes it's very hard. When we avoid or repress unwanted and often painful emotions they don't just disappear they get metabolized back into the nervous system and cause other problems.. and our needs go unmet. Also, start to shift your thinking into understanding what needs your emotions are informing you of. Thank you @sitwithwhit. Guess who took his first @wonderpuppypdx social class today and ALMOST played with other puppies?!!!

As odd as it may sound, I view mistakes as a necessary part of life. If things are always easy and well laid out, how can one readily learn? Therefore, failures when aptly corrected can lead you to a breakthrough. You know why? This is because with dedication, you can eventually turn failures into some of the greatest successes! I attribute this to the lessons I learnt from my mistakes. Yes, most of the legends today made uncountable mistakes, need I tell you where they are now? Most are trail blazers. A good instance is learning hands-on-skill, it is something you learn forever, that is the knowledge acquired can never depart from you, because you learn from mistakes. Kids don't come with a manual for parents to follow. It can be challenging to know how to help them develop well, especially when it comes to emotional regulation. . With so many different emotions it is difficult to know how start prepping your child to become emotionally self regulated. . Starting with 4 basic emotions like happy, sad, scared and mad is a great place to start because children can more easily recognize when they experience them and what events led to their emotional experience. . Emotionally coaching your child always starts with partnering with them in coregulation. To be the facilitator your child needs start by verbally describing the events that surround the emotion (track it!) and then reflecting the emotion they are illustrating. . 🎯 EXAMPLE You are trying really hard to reach your toy on the top shelf, and I see you hitting the shelves. You seem to be mad because you can't reach your toy. . Parent Challenge: Practice tracking and reflecting the 4 basic emotions with your child to initiate healthy emotional coregulation, and be on the lookout for additional steps to incorporate into your parenting toolbox in future posts . . . #adultstalkhealgrow #kidsplayhealgrow #parenting #parenting101 #parentmanual #parentcoaching #parentcoach #therapyiscool #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthwarrior #mentalhealth #emotions #emotionalregulation #coregulation #childhooddevelopment #childhoodanxiety #playtherapy #moms #dads #parents #anxiety #anxietyrelief #confidentparenting #alpharettatherapist #atlantatherapist #kids #emotionalcoaching

If there’s one thing I learned from going to school to be a couple and family therapist it was that all of us have trauma and stressors in our lives that impact our relationships to others and to ourselves. The importance of knowing this is knowing how to balance out, or counteract, those stressors and to be able to look inward at the effects of our trauma. This takes practice. Mentally walk through your average day and take note of if you are making time in your day to de-stress. For most people, it is likely hard to think of times you actively worked on your stress during the day. There’s many ways to do this, and one way is to implement a yoga practice during your day. This could look like a 5 minute deep breathing exercise at your desk on your break. It could look like going on a walk and noticing something beautiful around you. Or it could look like finding a yoga class near you that offers a lunch time practice. @220studio we have lunch vinyasa classes every Tuesday and Thursday from 12:05-12:50pm. This is your opportunity to give the gift of yoga, movement, and breath to your body and mind. These classes will help give you the break you need to practice slowing down and moving with intention. So come join me today in class and feel the difference! ❤️

Acting like something didn’t happen is just leaving it to fester. • Often people don’t want to complain about their “problems” or think that if they just forget and move on everything will be fine. In reality this is typically the underlying cause of significant #trauma, #depression, #anxiety and #addiction symptoms. • Being that these are my specialty areas, I can tell you that I hear and see this on a daily basis. • You’re not a negative person or “complainer” by talking about the things you’re struggling with. There’s a difference between seeking help and constantly whining or wallowing. • The idea is to work through your difficulties and traumas before they start to have a significant negative impact on your life. The sooner you do so, the easier the process is. • Unfortunately, this isn’t typically the case, which is where my Attachment-Focused EMDR specialty is particularly helpful 🙏🏻 • #losangelestherapist #westsidela #westwood #lmft #psychotherapy #therapist #psychotherapist #cbt #dbt #emdr #traumatherapy #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #diagnoses #notalabel #grouptherapy #copingskills #struggles #stressors #perseverance #substanceabuse #childdevelopment #adolescentdevelopment #emotionalregulation

Trust is the foundation of our human bonds. * with ourselves, others and the world around us. * Trust isn’t just about truth telling, it’s about about connection and engagement. * It’s about safety and security. * Self care establishes trust in self. * Vulnerable and connecting conversations establish trust in and with others. 😉

Does this feel familiar? Not enough hours in the day? Not enough of you to go around? Constantly juggling? I remember this feeling all too well and then eventually I discovered mindfulness. It taught me that there really is no benefit in trying to multitask. It is scientifically proven we’re actually less productive because we are constantly distracted by the demands of our time. One thing at a time sounds like a luxury but it is proven to help us to be more productive in the long run. Mindfulness allows us to create space and if practiced continuously for 8 weeks (and why stop there!), it can have a significant impact on our Wellbeing, our Stress Management, our Cognitive Ability and our Emotional Regulation. #mindfulness #emotionalregulation #stressmanagement #cognitiveability #lookingafteryourself #selfcare #selfawareness

#respect your #anger. Listen to it.Notice when it's present and intensified.Perhaps you feel threatened by the emotions and the memories of the past. TEEN SELF CARE Self-care is especially important for adolescents, as they are developing a sense of identity, experiencing puberty changes, working through friendship issues, gaining independence from parents and learning to take responsibility for themselves. There is also significant brain development during adolescence with the parts of the brain that are responsible for emotion & reward, developing first (Limbic System). Other parts of the brain that are responsible for understanding the consequences of your behaviour - like the frontal lobes - don't develop until age 20-25. This means that teens may struggle with new emotions & feel overwhelmed. They may be sensitive to emotional stimuli, to non-verbal communication & be frequently indecisive. One strategy that may be helpful is to introduce a mindfulness practice to assist your teen cope better with their emotions - to ground themselves. An example is Smiling Minds App. Photo: Iceland 2018. Ugh, feelings are definitely not a topic I enjoy talking about. This is because I really don’t understand my own feelings. But its important to learn to understand them and to talk about them 💫 ADHD makes it harder for me to regulate my emotions and to realise what theyr’e all about. It’s not that I don’t feel, because I know that I do feel things so deeply, its that I have resisted these feelings 💫 I’ve pushed them away, ignored them and brushed them off. I don’t know why but this is how I’ve always been and I guess overtime its become a habit 💫 The one thing I’ve learnt is that this way of dealing with things has not been helpful. Sooner or later those feelings come back up to bite you. They can resurface in so many ways; through anger, sadness, frustration and essentially disconnection 💫 These built up emotions can reek havoc on your happiness if you don’t deal with them. Learn to sit with your feelings, understand them and question them. Life isn’t always going to be sunshine and rainbows and thats okay 💫 Don’t be so hard on yourself because you are doing the best you can. Remember that life is full of ups and downs and in order to fly, first you have to fall. The best things in life take hard work and your happiness should come first. Take care of yourself 💫 Jacqui 💕 🎨 @veronicadearly #strength #happiness #change #adhd #selfcare #lawlife #emotionalregulation #adhdlawgraduate #lawgrad #emotions #neurodivergent #adhdawareness #adhdwomen #adhdsupport #adhdlife #adhdbrain #brisbanelaw #adhdisreal #adultadhd #brisbane #adhdtips #feels #expressyourself #adhdexplained #adhdinspiration #feelings #legalprofession #girlswithadhd #embrace #lawyertobe

NEEDLE PHOBIA/FEAR Trypanophobia or needle phobia is a fear of medical needle procedures resulting from the sensation (or the memories of past sensations) of the needle entering the body. Needle phobia can provoke intense anxiety, even a panic attack, if not managed effectively. If you are facing an injection, blood test or vaccination, here are some simple tips that should help you cope: 😑 close your eyes or look away from the needle. 😌 take slow, deep breaths. ➡️ Focus on your breath, saying in, out, be calm to the rhythm of your breathing. Remind yourself that it will be over soon. Visualise yourself in a pleasant situation if you need a distraction. Unfortunately, this phobia can sometimes mean that sufferers go to extreme lengths to avoid situations involving needles. This avoidance can lead to negative health outcomes if left untreated and can also impact an individual's life by causing delay or distress related to life choices like travel or parenthood. If you experience problematic trypanophobia, I recommend that you consider psychological treatment, as it is a treatable condition. Photo: beautiful Needle Eye at Venus Bay in Victoria. DEEP BREATHING CALMS YOUR EMOTIONS A recent study showed that controlling breathing by counting breaths influences “neuronal oscillations throughout the brain,” particularly in brain regions related to emotion. Participants were asked to count how many breaths they took over a two-minute period, which caused them to pay especially focused attention to their breathing.  When they counted correctly, brain activity (monitored by EEG) in regions related to emotion, memory and awareness showed a more organised pattern versus what’s normally experienced during a resting state. The results are preliminary, but add to the argument that controlling breathing taps into something deeper. Deep breathing technique: Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound. Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four. Hold your breath for a count of seven. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of eight. Photo: stunning Lavender Farm in Tasmania. The perfume was divine. Lets talk about emotions 🎭 Emotional regulation is something a lot of adhders struggle with. This has a lot to do with neurological differences but also from dealing with constant ridicule and rejection. Being told to slow down, try harder and focus all the time is going to make you feel like your bad or doing everything wrong and of course its going to have an effect on how you feel 💫 Growing up I felt like I was out of place and always doing everything wrong and it shrivelled away my self esteem. Being different was always seen as a negative when it should have been embraced and celebrated. Everyone is different in one way or another so why can’t we accept that everyone learns differently and can have things that make certain things harder or near impossible for them 💫 I’ve found that learning why you feel the way you do and how you can change it, is the first step to overcoming your emotional baggage. Most of the time what I actually think is no where near what someone else is thinking. People show emotions differently and its hard to know what others are feeling 💫 Try and understand how others may be feeling or what they are going through. They might have their own personal things going on and thats why the seem quiet or dismissive. Stay true to yourself and see if theres anyway you can help them. Acknowledge your feelings but also consider that they might not reflect the true situation 💫 Even if someone isn’t happy with you or doesn’t like you.. who cares!? Your not for everyone. Stay with the people who accept you for who you are because thats the kind of energy you should have around you. Be genuinely you because you are AMAZING 💫 Jacqui 💕 🎨 @lizandmollie #adhd #adhdlawgraduate #lawgrad #adhdemotions #neurodivergent #adhdawareness #adhdwomen #beyou #adhdsupport #adhdlife #adhdbrain #acceptance #adhdisreal #adultadhd #adhdtips #rest #adhdexplained #adhdinspiration #law #legalprofession #change #girlswithadhd #study #studylife #lawlife #lawyertobe #embraceyourdifferences #goodvibes #emotionalregulation

EXERCISE: ACT GOALS Inspired by the volcanic environment of Whakaari in NZ, where sulphur miners worked for years. I admire the determination of these brave people who worked in this beautiful but tough place. It's amazing what humans can achieve when they set their minds on a goal. Setting goals is the first step for achieving important life changes. Take a few minutes to think about changes you'd like to make. Ask yourself: 1. How would I act differently if painful thoughts & feelings were no longer an obstacle? 2. What projects or activities would I start & continue if my time/energy wasn't consumed by troubling emotions? 3. What would I do if fear disappeared? 4. What would I attempt if thoughts of failure didn't deter me? Write down your answers and set some goals to start the change process. Source: The Happiness Trap by Dr Russ Harris. ANXIETY TIP: PAUSE & THINK This stunning black beach near Vik in Iceland was a magical place, where nature dominates the landscape. Being is a place like this, allows you to step back from the worries of daily life, put issues in perspective and balance your thoughts. What you think and the thoughts that go through your mind, are very important in determining how you feel. It is not the situation you are in that determines how you feel, but the thoughts, meanings, and interpretations you bring to that situation. A helpful strategy when a worry pops into your mind is chosing to postpone the internal dialogue until you are calm and able to respond vs react. Mindfulness strategies can often be a useful way to destress your mind. Later in thinking time, and only if something is still bothering you, you can employ CBT strategies. The aim is to chose helpful problem solving, emotion coping strategies or both to achieve balance & perspective in your thinking. RESEARCH: HUMOUR AND RESILIENCY Researchers have found evidence that several of these character strengths are significant predictors of well-being and life satisfaction, including hope, zest, humour, gratitude, love and curiosity. Humour, which is defined as a general positive attribute (e.g., like to laugh and joke, bring smiles to other people), is one of the character strengths that contributes most strongly to life satisfaction. Of particular interest from a resiliency perspective is that several positive character strengths, such as kindness, humour, leadership, love and social intelligence, all showed significant increases in growth following experiences with major traumatic events, such as a life-threatening accident, attack, or illness. In addition, some of these positive character strengths are even better predictors of post-treatment recovery from depression than negative dysfunctional attitudes. Other research has evidenced how the personal use of humour can improve coping with stressful events across the life span. Further, individuals with higher coping humour display more positive affect, greater motivation, and more effort in completing difficult tasks. Humour has also been found to contribute significantly to the enhancement of positive life experiences and events. The notion that humour may function as one means of regulating both negative and positive emotions prompts the question of whether effective humor use can be trained. One interesting study has suggested that humour skills could be enhanced across 8 training sessions, so that individuals had more control over regulating daily positive affect, thus increasing emotional well-being. MINDFUL CONNECTION - "Connection is the process of making full contact with your experience in the moment. Connection means being fully aware of your here and now experience & being interested, open & receptive to that experience. CHANGE & CONTROL When we are adjusting to life changes, it is normal to experience mixed emotions, including sadness, grief, excitement, irritation, happiness & anger. Until we inevitably adjust to a change, confusion, denial, resistance & some anxiety are common. By using the 4C’s framework of Control, Commitment, Challenge and Confidence you can regain control and make things happen again to boost your confidence. This post is about feelings of control. To regain a sense of control during change, here are some tips: Remind yourself of your strengths. Nurture self talk about your adaptibilty by recalling times where you have successfully navigated new situations. Reflect on what you do well & enjoy doing. Challenge negative and unhelpful self talk. Self sooth and increase pleasant events to improve your coping. Ensure you get enough sleep. Remember that each step along that journey requires a choice to continue moving forward. BE KIND TO YOURSELF Compassion and kindness are not feelings, they are actions. Acting with compassion to self & others means acting in a caring & loving way. If you are ready to commit to such actions, it can be helpful to write it down, or share it with a person who cares about you. Take time to nurture yourself, rather than sacrificing your wellbeing by allowing stress, anxiety or depression to lead your choices. Commit to being kind to yourself and respectful of your need to self care appropriately. Be as kind to yourself as you probably are to others. Each is us is ultimately responsible for attending to our health and wellbeing. PERSPECTIVE One of the benefits of travelling to a destination like Egypt is that it puts the daily stresses of life into perspective. Standing beside the glorious ancient pillars in the Karnak Temple, it is easy to recognise that most daily issues are miniscule and unimportant in our human history and personal life journey. In fact, many struggles in life are brief and temporary, but we hold on to them tightly, rather than letting go, coping or problem solving. If you have difficulty maintaining a balanced perspective, you may find psychological counselling beneficial. REALISTIC OPTIMISM - “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”– Anne Frank Realistic optimism is a key ingredient of resilience. The research on optimism is clear: optimistic people are happier, healthier, and more productive. Compared to pessimists, optimists have better relationships, succeed more, are better problem solvers and are less likely to suffer from depression. This is because individuals who are more realistically focused on the positive elements of adversity are able to better manage the negative aspects of situations. Realistic optimists reflect upon difficult situations carefully, try to find silver linings and trust that viable solutions will be discovered. They think about their thinking and are aware that they will recover, given time and support. They proactively look below the surface of an experience to better understand their reactions. RESILIENCE FACTORS -- "If your heart is broken, make art with the pieces." -- Shane Koyczan Resilience is the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress. It means "bouncing back" from difficult experiences. A combination of factors contribute to resilience: Having caring and supportive relationships within and outside the family. Relationships that create love and trust, provide role models and offer encouragement and reassurance help bolster a person's resilience. The capacity to make realistic plans and take steps to carry them out. A positive view of yourself and confidence in your strengths and abilities. Skills in communication and problem solving. The capacity to manage strong feelings and impulses. All of these are factors that people can develop in themselves, or work on through the counselling process. COGNITIVE DISTORTIONS According to Hayes et al. (1999), there are 4 factors that fuel the myths about anxiety, turn anxiety into a problem and keep you stuck. 1. Fusion with your thoughts, images and feelings - the mind trap - feeds the unpleasant thoughts and feelings. 2. Evaluating your experiences - recognise that we filter through our mood, self esteem beliefs and past experiences. Just because you think it doesn't necessarily make it so. 3. Avoidance - gives only temporary relief usually. It is often the case that avoidance eventually fuels pain and distress. Facing feelings and situations also gives you the opportunity to grow, rectify a situation and change. 4. Reason giving in your behaviour- using anxiety as a justification rather than exercising personal control can be problematic. Further reading: The Mindfulness & Acceptance workbook for Anxiety. OPTIMISM WITH A TOUCH OF REALITY Optimism is a key ingredient of psychological health and resilience. The research on optimism is clear: optimistic people are happier, healthier, savour life and are more productive. They think about their thinking and are aware that they will recover, given time and support. They proactively look below the surface of an experience to better understand their reactions. Optimism is a thought style that can be learned through reading and therapy. It takes practice to challenge unhealthy pessimistic thinking styles, but it is worth the effort to improve your mood, life satisfaction and mental health. Optimistically savouring life and appreciating the small things will also act as a buffer against depression. Worth thinking about. EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE Imagine yourself in a crowd.. some people will be emotionally stronger and more resilient than others. The resilient people will have a greater ability to adapt to stressful situations or crises, to adapt to adversity without lasting difficulties and to bounce back effectively with a reasonable timeframe. . Resilient people experience a normal range of human emotions, including happiness, joy, fear, anxiety, anger and sadness. Resilient individuals are conscious and aware about their own emotions and feel comfortable talking about feelings with trusted others. If experiencing a difficult time, resilient people feel a range of emotions and are able to label those emotions, and manage the more difficult ones.  Being aware of the truth of your emotions is the first step to managing them appropriately.
