Happy Lunar New Year! Here’s a photo of a little fan dance the girls did on the shores of Río de la Plata. Kunghei fatchoy to all of our friend celebrating with their family & friends this week with all that yummy food. As we say in Uruguay “buen provecho!”

Alone in dark. 🤩 I thought not to fear the darkness, but after this experience...I realized that yes.

Hit the town on a quest to find the giant Frida Kahlo mural we had driven by a thousand times and stopped to take photos and shoot video along the way. Never found the mural that day, but we now know where it is and will visit it upon our return if it is still there. We also gave the Uber driver something to talk about when he got home because we shot silly Hoop videos along the way and I’m certain he had never come across anything like the likes of us. The first clue was the question “you’re not from around these parts are you?” 😉

Bought some last minute snacks for the airplane. I love anything with simple ingredients. Peanuts, sugar & vanilla. These vendors have been selling #garrapiñada on the streets of Uruguay since before I was born. They are delicious. |#cggphotorawfootage

It’s summer somewhere in the world…and it is in José Ignacio, Uruguay.🌞 During our winter months, it transforms from a sleepy fishing village into a vacation destination for surfers and jet-setters. While it’s no travel secret anymore, it’s still low-key enough for a true beach getaway — think delicious communal asados (barbeques) set on the Atlantic and sunbathing through the evening. This is Latin America's version of the Hampton's, but with a chic and artisanal vibe that's harder to beat.✨ #traveltuesday 📷: @claritacao

My sister & me on the stairs of the home we grew up in before we handed the keys over to the new owners. My dad would pose us on these stairs when we were little and we have many photos here over the years. “...and then there were two..” my sister said as we took this photo. Closing the book on this one tugged at my gutts like no other, but I know these walls and that beautiful old jasmine tree will always carry a piece of all of us in our family. So many birthdays, births, baptisms, Christmases, weddings, deaths & everything in between shared here.

These are the Llamadas. Over 100 drum troupes parade down the streets of el barrio Sur over two days in February dancing drumming and competing to signal the start of carnaval. The crowds press in to catch a glimpse of it all. It is a culmination of a year’s worth of planning and rehearsing, all for this night: the final celebration. Every neighborhood is represented, flying their colours, their flags & their own unique drum beats, all for the love of candombe. Candombe traditions were brought here by the African slaves and they would meet here long ago to celebrate their gods through drumming ceremonies which evolved into this beautiful night. There is symbolism in the costumes and in the traditional roles that people take in the “comparsas”. The drums rumble and shake up your soul and you can’t help but dance. |#cggphotorawfootage

Late night gallivanting with these two, taking a short cut to hail a taxi, when we came across this plaza. I have wedding photos in this exact place that my sister took of me before leaving for the church. My dad smoked a cigarette and waited by the old Ford Model T my aunts & uncles had booked to drive me as a surprise. It was such a cool “full circle” moment being back here with my mom and daughter and snapping this memory years later. I know my dad was watching from above and smiling. Of course he just sent a “sign” confirming this as I typed this message. Coincidence or not, when I typed “dad” a loud click of plates shifted in the kitchen and echoed throughout the house. Gave me goosebumps. It is 5am and I just finished packing. They say the veil is thin at this time of the morning. Regardless, I need rest before the big return trip. 26 hrs of travel. Child’s play! 🤣😉. Sweet dreams beautiful people.

The Llamadas day 2 with MsR & abuela. We couldn’t find a spot to watch the parade that wasn’t crowded and crazy because we got there too late, so we opted to hang out where they enter the parade route all done up and ready to go. The energy was electric. So many people out tonight since the big groups usually come out on day 2. We met lots of interesting folks and had funny conversations and MsR got so many photos with the dancers & drummers. It was cute watching her pick out the most glittery costumed dancers and walking timidly towards them asking for a picture with them. Happy we went out again. |#cggphotorawfootage

Learning about Uruguayan history through art. These little artists were very engaged. This painting is called “Juramento de Los 33 Orientales” by Blanes- who were said to be instrumental in liberating Uruguay. The running joke is always “if there were 33, then who took the picture?” Our #unschooling journey continues. |#cggphotorawfootage
