Because I’m still sad @phyllis_posnick is stepping down from full time duties at @voguemagazine, here’s more of her remarkable work: a #gianfrancoferre blouse as photographed by #irvingpenn for the September 1993 issue. Superb.

Gianni Versace sitting on the table of his study in Italy, 1985. The fashion designer was as glamorous and compelling a character as the celebrities he dressed, counting Princess Diana amongst his friends. Founder of the Versace fashion house, the Italian transformed the industry with his brash and exuberant designs, and championed the ‘supermodel’ phenomenon. Versace was murdered outside his Miami home on 15 July 1997, aged just 50. __ 📷: Angelo Deligio/Mondadori Portfolio via Getty Images __ #gianniversace #versace #fashionhistory #gettyarchive

Wedding Dress | c. 1807 • • • White muslin wedding dresses were particularly fashionable from 1790-1810, helping to establish white as the most appropriate choice for well-to-do young women marrying for the first time. This dress was worn by a seventeen year old bride, Mary Dalton Norcliffe who married Dr. Charles Best at the church of Saint Michael-Le-Belfry in York on 11 June 1807. At the time of their marriage Dr. Best was working as an Assistant Physician to Dr. Alexander Hunter at York Asylum. Although the cut and construction of the dress follow standard practice, its decoration is striking. The asymmetrical embroidery on the front of the skirt recalls the drapery of a toga reflecting the current interest in classical antiquity. In May 1808 The Lady's Monthly Museum featured a formal dress, also made of muslin embroidered with cotton, with a similar decorative feature, suggesting that the decoration of the wedding dress was very up-to-date. • • • #whattheywore #historicalfashion #fashion #fashiondesign #fashionhistory #historyoffashion #vintagefashion #art #vintage #janeausten #historicfashion #defunctfashion #historicalfashion #costume #ootd #costumedesign #couture #costumehistory #weddingdress #muslin #regencyfashion #regencyera

“The thread in the hands of a fond-hearted mother Makes clothes for the body of her wayward boy; Carefully she sews and thoroughly she mends, Dreading the delays that will keep him from home. But how much love has the inch-long grass For three spring months where is the light of the sun?” - A Traveller’s Song By Meng Jiao 孟郊《游子吟》(born 751– died 814) was a Chinese poet during the Tang Dynasty. . The portrait is of silk merchant ‘Eshing’, shown half-length, wearing a mandarin hat, a beautiful black embroidered silk robe, gently smiling, with his right hand holding his string of beads in a gesture of refinement. Painted c. 1800 by Spoilum; aChinese artist active in Guangzhou between 1785 and 1810, during the Old China Trade. Portrait of Renée Perle by Jacques-Henri Lartigue, 1931. I’m just enraptured by the affair between Lartigue and Renee Perle. Staying on this one a bit longer. And the images! While Perle never wrote any journals to narrate her own story, Latrigue’s photographs of her no doubt depict a woman in love. In his diary, Lartigue, a notorious playboy fascinated by beautiful women and fast cars, wrote about their passionate affair: “Renée! She is tender, devoted, passionate. And above all she is in love. She is always making scenes. Is it jealousy, or is it madness? Maybe it is the need to be assaulted, to be made unhappy and to cry – all for the sake of reconciliation? I am far too down-to-earth; too much of a spectator and too bad an actor to fall into…the kind of game Renée wishes me to play.” #vivrelafrance!, #fashionaddict,, #fashiondiaries, #fashioneditorial, #fashiongram, #fashionphotographer, #instaphotography, #photographylovers, #fashionhistory, #womenphotographers, #photographyschool, #lartigue, #paris, #stolenmoments, #modernwomen, #trailblazers, #glamour, #jadore, #mysteriousbeauty

This absorbing portrait of a Danish Caribbean girl has recently been causing stir, as historians are trying to find out the identity of the sitter. In Danish media Wayne James, owner of the painting, said, “I look forward to being able to put a name to one of the most mysterious faces in colonial art.” So far, it is presumed she is from the Danish West Indies (now St Thomas), it is suggested she must have been painted in a cooler climate (Denmark) because of the warm shawl she wears. This painting is almost three dimension-like, a resplendent mix of fabrics, a brightly coloured plaid head wrap, a white knotted-collar blouse and large wool shawl. Presented in three-quarter profile, the young subject, appears aloof and intriguing, timid yet unwavering, comfortable but melancholic. Interest in the shared heritage between Denmark and its former West Indies islands is becoming more relevant. The Danish family that sold the painting in Hørsholm – likely the family to which this young lady is connected by blood and/or service- can probably answer some questions. Clearly, this young woman is of major importance to whoever commissioned the painting. Whatever her duty may have been she was painted in her own right, for all eternity to see. Titled – ‘En Mulatinde’ (A Female Mulatto) by C. Felsing, 1855, oil on canvas. Private Collection of Wayne James brought in 2004. . . . . . . . . . . . . . #diaspora #history #fashionhistory #gallery #multiethnic #blackhistories #blackhistory #painting #inclusivehistories #diasporichistories #fineart #19thcentury #17thcentury #18thcentury #portrait #portraiture #arthistory #caribbeanhistories #europeanhistory #headwrap #poems #danishhistory #danishgirl #virginislands #plaid #shawl

Hellooo! 😘 I'm back! I missed your beautiful pictures & had to sneak in every now & then to see what you guys were up to, hehe! Thanks to everyone for being so patient while I took a break.💕 I think it's necessary to step away from social media every now & then (yes, I just said that) just to give your mind a break from the constant overflow of images and likes... Which new studies have shown, may cause depression & anxiety: two very important things we need to monitor & examine before they inhabit our minds. Take care of yourselves my friends, sometimes it can be a harsh terrain online. 💜 xx 💜 . . . Foundation & bronzer @avonsouthafrica @beauty_bulletin 📷 my wonderful husby
