January 17th is also the Feast Day of Bl. Rosalina of Villeneuve🙏🏼💐Patron of Draguignan, France. . . . Born to an ancient and noble family; daughter of Count Arnaud. As a child, Rosalina was noted for her charity to the poor, often slipping away to give food to beggars outside the family castle. Her father, seeing that she was giving away expensive meals, ordered her to stop. Saddened, she obeyed for about a week, but the sight of the beggars at the castle door was too much for her. Late one night, she filled her apron with food, and started toward the doors. Her father caught her, and demanded to know what she carried; when she opened the apron, it was filled with roses. He immediately ordered the cooks to feed everyone at the door. She became a Carthusian nun, entering the monastery of Bertrand in the diocese of Gap, France. Prioress of Celle-Roubaud in Provence, France. Her mother joined the order with her, and her brother built a church for their house. Rosalina had frequent visions, the gift of reading hearts, and other mystical phenomena. Her brother Hélian fought and was captured in the Crusades. Legend says he was freed from his chains and led safely home across the seas by a vision of Rosalina who appeared to him in a cloud of roses. . . . #catholic #saint #catholicsaint #blessed #feast #feastday #saintoftheday

January 17th is also the Feast Day of Bl. Teresio Olivelli🙏🏼💐. . . . Son of Domenico Olivelli and Clelia Invernizzi, Teresio grew up in a very religious family. His maternal uncle, Father Rocco Invernizzi, was the boy’s spiritual teacher and director. His family moved to Pavia, Italy in 1926. Studied at Ghislieri College and then in 1934 at the law school at the University of Pavia, graduating there with honors in 1938. Member of Catholic Action and a Fascist student group. Professor of administrative law at the University of Turin, Italy; there he began a personal ministry of caring for the poor and orphaned. He wrote a number of articles on the law, social conditions and current events, and won an oratory competition in Trieste, Italy with a thesis on human dignities for all people, regardless of race. He volunteered to fight in the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Studied in Berlin, Germany from 1939 to 1941, and spoke fluent German. Volunteered to fight on the Russian front in 1941, but was injured by frostbite. His experiences in war turned him against Fascism, and he refused to swear allegiance to the Italian Social Republic government in 1943. For this, he was deported to Innsbruck, Austria on 9 September 1943, but managed to return to Milan, Italy on 20 October 1943. There he founded an underground newspaper that promoted Christianity and Christian alteratives to Facism. Due to acts like the deportation of Jews, Teresio gave up all thoughts of reconciliation with Facism, and began fighting in the Italian Resistance. Arrested on 27 April 1944 in Milan, he was imprisoned in a series of prisons, and routinely tortured by the Nazis, he was known for sharing his meagre rations with other prisoners, and treating their injuries. At one point he was imprisoned with and befriended Blessed Odoardo Focherini. Beaten to death for trying to defend a Ukranian prisoner. Posthumously awarded the Medal of Military Valor. . . . #catholic #saint #catholicsaint #blessed #feast #feastday #saintoftheday

January 17th is the Feast Day of St. Anthony the Abbot🙏🏼💐Patron of Skin diseases, basket makers, brushmakers, gravediggers, Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, Rome. . . . Following the death of his parents when he was about 20, Anthony insured that his sister completed her education, then he sold his house, furniture, and the land he owned, gave the proceeds to the poor, joined the anchorites who lived nearby, and moved into an empty sepulchre. At age 35 he moved to the desert to live alone; he lived 20 years in an abandoned fort. Anthony barricaded the place for solitude, but admirers and would-be students broke in. He miraculously healed people, and agreed to be the spiritual counselor of others. His recommendation was to base life on the Gospel. Word spread, and so many disciples arrived that Anthony founded two monasteries on the Nile, one at Pispir, one at Arsinoe. Many of those who lived near him supported themselves by making baskets and brushes, and from that came his patronage of those trades. Anthony briefly left his seclusion in 311, going to Alexandria, Egypt to fight Arianism, and to comfort the victims of the persecutions of Maximinus. At some point in his life, he met with his sister again. She, too, had withdrawn from the world, and directed a community of nuns. Anthony retired to the desert, living in a cave on Mount Colzim. Descriptions paint him as uniformly modest and courteous. His example led many to take up the monastic life, and to follow his way. Late in life Anthony became a close friend of Saint Paul the Hermit, and he buried the aged anchorite, leading to his patronage of gravediggers. His biography was written by his friend Saint Athanasius of Alexandria. His relationship with pigs and patronage of swineherds is a little complicated. Skin diseases were sometimes treated with applications of pork fat, which reduced inflammation and itching. As Anthony's intervention aided in the same conditions, he was shown in art accompanied by a pig. People who saw the art work, but did not have it explained, thought there was a direct connection between Anthony and pigs - and people who worked with swine took him as their patron.

(251 – 356) Throughout his life Anthony argued and literally wrestled with the devil. His first temptations to leave his ascetic life were arguments he found hard to refuse. He was anxious about his sister and longed for his relatives. He had thoughts of using his property for good purposes, and a desire for power and money. Anthony resisted the devil. The devil then tried flattery, telling Anthony how powerful Anthony was to beat him. Anthony trusted in Jesus' name to rid himself of the devil constantly. In God’s true and good world, there is another world whose false values constantly tempt us. Anthony’s hermit life reminds us of the absoluteness of our break with sin and the totality of our commitment to Christ. Then I heard a voice saying to me, 'Humility.'" #saintanthonyofegypt #feastday #prayforus #hermit #humility #jesus #temptations #snares #devil #selfcontrol #patience #perseverence #shadesofblue ourmotheroftheeucharist.org #lottygraphics @llotty1966

Persecution forced Paul into hiding, first at a friend’s house and then, to a cave in the Egyptian desert. He had planned to return home after things settled down, but the peaceful solitude of the desert seduced him to stay. For more information: http://ow.ly/nE1x30ndXeD #feastday

Happy Feast of St. Anthony the Abbot! "Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil." Ephesians 6:11 #feastday #catholic #catholicinsta

Today is the feast day of Saint Anthony of Egypt, a 3rd century saint now known as one of the Desert Fathers. The son of wealthy parents, Anthony found inspiration in Jesus’ advice to "sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor”, so when his parents died, he sold everything and left to be a hermit.⠀ . ⠀ Anthony was the first hermit to retreat to the desert, locking himself in a room. This didn’t stop people from seeking his advice, however, and eventually, after he refused to come out of the room, they broke down the door! Some stayed there with him and formed the first monastic community, though they each lived separately. After a life of pushing himself to continually deepen his faith, Anthony died at 105.⠀ ⠀ St Anthony’s witness reminds us of the commitment we need to have to find holiness. While we are not all called to literally go into the desert to escape the world, he can inspire our own determination to take drastic measures to increase in faith. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #feastday #catholicsaints #scripture #bible #biblequotes #saints #jesus #christ #christian #catholic #catholics #catholicchurch #romancatholic #romancatholicchurch #christianity #christiansofinstagram #catholicsofinstagram #popefrancis #catholicquotes #faithquotes #instafaith #holiness #catholicandproud #catholicconnect #catholicworld #instacatholic #catolica #instagram#catholiclife #catholicliving

Anthony's parents died when he was 20 years old and he inherited their wealth as well as became responsible for his young sister. One day in church, he read Matthew 19:21: "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." He walked out the door of the church right away and gave away all his property except what he and his sister needed to live on. It wasn't enough to listen to words, he had to become what Jesus said. #happy #feastday #stanthonythegreat Although he may not be the Anthony that will help you find your lost items, this St. Anthony could help you if you feel you lost your Christianity. This Anthony bearly ate and yet he was healthy and strong. He secluded himself yet he was exceedingly popular. He was not intellent and yet had so much Godly wisdom he could silence philosophers. Sometimes we are the people that God needs and uses to fulfill the Christian duties with Acts of Mercy and Love, all we have to do is respond.⠀ ⠀ "Men are often called intelligent wrongly. Intelligent men are not those who are erudite in the sayings and books of the wise men of old, but those who have an intelligent soul and can discriminate between good and evil. They avoid what is sinful and harms the soul; and with deep gratitude to God they resolutely adhere by dint of practice to what is good and benefits the soul. These men alone should truly be called intelligent.”⠀ ⠀ + St. Anthony the Great, “On the Character of Men and on the Virtuous Life: One Hundred and Seventy Texts,” Text 1, The Philokalia: The Complete Text (Vol. 1)

Blessed feast day of St. Anthony of Egypt, Father of all Monks! To a society that places such a high priority on possessions, St. Anthony’s life of asceticism and self-imposed poverty, can be a great witness that the pearl of great price is not a thing, but the person of Jesus Christ. “O God, who brought the Abbot Saint Anthony to serve you by a wondrous way of life in the desert, grant, through his intercession, that, denying ourselves, we may always love you above all things. Not many people know this, but I claim today’s saint, St. Anthony of the Desert, as my patron. (My middle name is Anthony.) He is considered the father of monasticism in both the Eastern and Western Churches, and is venerated in both traditions as a saint. “Somebody asked Anthony, ‘What shall I do in order to please God?’ He replied, ‘Do what I tell you, which is this: wherever you go, keep God in mind; whatever you do, follow the example of holy Scripture; Where ever you are, stay there and do not move away in a hurry. If you keep these guidelines, you will be saved.’ * * #feastday #catholic #friarlife #religiouslife #monasticism

It has been quite some time since I've posted a peg around here, so here is today's feast day: St. Anthony, though perhaps not the one most folks think of. Painting this Saint Anthony is one of the reasons I was inspired to paint the saints with quotes on them - they've all said inspirational things why not paint their words right on the peg? 😇 Happy feast day, St. Anthony, may we all move from fearing the Lord to loving Him. ❤️

Today's saint - St. Anthony the Great, pray for us! Anthony’s life was spent in solitude. He saw the world completely covered with snares and gave the Church and the world the witness of solitary asceticism, great personal mortification, and prayer. But no saint is antisocial, and Anthony drew many people to himself for spiritual healing and guidance. At 54, he responded to many requests and founded a sort of monastery of scattered cells. Again, like Francis, he had a great fear of “stately buildings and well-laden tables.” At 60, he hoped to be a martyr in the renewed Roman persecution of 311, fearlessly exposing himself to danger while giving moral and material support to those in prison. At 88, he was fighting the Arian heresy, that massive trauma from which it took the Church centuries to recover. “The mule kicking over the altar” denied the divinity of Christ. Anthony is associated in art with a T-shaped cross, a pig and a book. The pig and the cross are symbols of his valiant warfare with the devil—the cross his constant means of power over evil spirits, the pig a symbol of the devil himself. The book recalls his preference for “the book of nature” over the printed word. Anthony died in solitude at age 105. #catholic #catholics #catholicfaith #catholicsaint #catholicsaints #todayssaint #saintoftheday #romancatholic #romancatholics #romancatholicsaint #romancatholicsaints #catholicsaintoftheday #religious #latinmass #mass #fssp #church #catholictradition #traditions #tridentinemass #jesus #christ #feastday #catholicism www.churchmilitant.com

Today we celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Anthony, abbot. Patron Saint of animals, basket makers, brushmakers, butchers, monks and many more. In both calendars the Church commemorates the abbot from the 3rd century. St. Anthony, the father of monks, retired to the desert at about the age of eighteen in order to live in perfect solitude. He laid the foundations of community life, and gave to his disciples that profound broad and sane instruction, the mature result of solitude and prayer, which forms the surest basis of Christian asceticism. January 16th is also the Feast Day of Bl. Juana Maria Condesa Lluch🙏🏼💐. . . . Born into a wealthy and pious family, she received a good secular and Christian education. Even as a child Juana was devoted to the Holy Eucharist and Our Lady, and felt a call to serve. As she grew she developed a deep prayer life, felt a call to religious life, and a need to help factory workers who lived in horrible, de-humanizing and life-shortening conditions of 19th century industrialization. Cardinal Antolín Monescillo, archbishop of Valencia initially refused her permission to found a religious congregation, saying she was too young. But in 1884 she received permission to open a shelter to provide material and spiritual assistance to factory workers and their families. Soon after she opened a school for their children, and other young women felt a call to help in the work. They formed the basis for the Congregation of the Handmaids of the Immaculate Conception, Protectress of Workers which she founded in Valencia, Spain. They are teachers, spiritual directors and protectors of the poor, especially young working women. The Congregation received diocesan approval in 1892, temporary papal approval from Pope Pius XI on 14 April 1937, and definitive approval on 27 January 1947 from Pope Pius XII. . . . #catholic #saint #catholicsaint #blessed #feast #feastday #saintoftheday

January 16th is also the Feast Day of Bl. Gonzalo de Amarante🙏🏼💐. . . . Born to a wealthy, high-ranking family. Upon his ordination, he transferred his great wealth to his newphews, and spent 14 years in pilgrimage through the Holy Lands; his family did not recognize him when he returned, and his nephew set the dogs on him. Dominican friar. Received permission from his superiors to live as a hermit near Amaranthe, Portugal. Built a bridge over the Tamega River, mainly with his own hands. Many wonderful incidents are told of Blessed Gonzalo. Among them • As he was being carried to the baptismal font as an infant, he fixed his eyes on the church's crucifix with a look of extraordinary love. • He was directed to the Dominicans by a supernatural directive that he should join the Order in which the Office began and ended with the Ave Maria. • When workers who helped briefly with his bridge building ran out of wine, Gonzalo prayed, smacked a rock with a stick, it split open, and wine poured out. • When the workers ran out of food, Gonzalo went to the water, called out, and fish jumped onto the river bank to feed them. • During a homily, in which he wanted to show the horror of exclusion from the Church, he 'excommunicated' a basket of bread; the loaves immediately became black, rotted and inedible. When he removed the 'excommunication' a few minutes later, the bread became fresh and wholesome again. . . . #catholic #saint #catholicsaint #blessed #feast #feastday #saintoftheday

January 16th is the Feast Day of St. Joseph Vaz🙏🏼💐Patron of Sri Lanka. . . . Born to Christopher Vaz and Maria de Miranda, Christian parents of the Konkani Brahmin caste; the third of six children. Attended primary and secondary school in Sancoale, where he learned Portugese, and Benaulim, where he learned Latin. He studied humanities at the Jesuit Goa University, philosophy and theology at Saint Thomas Aquinas Academy. Ordained in 1676. Preacher and confessor. Opened a Latin school in Sancoale for perspective seminarians. Always devoted to Our Lady, in 1677 he consecrated himself as a "slave of Mary," sealing it with a document known as his "Letter of Enslavement". About this time Joseph learned of the condition of Catholics in Ceylon; persecuted by the Dutch, they had had no priests for 50 years. He sought permission to work in Ceylon, but was asked to go to the mission in Kanara. He accepted, but his thoughts and heart were in Ceylon. Vicar of Vara in Kanara, preaching, hearing confessions, visiting the sick, helping the poor, ransoming Christian slaves, working to settle jurisictional disputes that interfered with the sacraments. Meanwhile, a small congregation of priests had formed in Goa with the Church of the Holy Cross of Miracles as their residence. Joseph joined and was elected superior. He gave a definitive canonical status to this Oratory, introduced religious exercises and charitable activities, and trained its members for the mission. In 1686 he gave up his position, and set out for Ceylon. Disguised as an itinerant worker, he reached the port of Tuticorin on Easter 1687, and then the Dutch stronghold of Jaffna in the north of the Ceylon. He suffered from acute dysentery, contracted from the terrible travelling conditions, and upon recovery he began his mission by contacting Catholics and hiding from the Dutch. He was taken in by a courageous Catholic, and ministered to his secret flock by night. One step ahead of the authorities, in 1689 he went to the Catholic village of Sillalai and began ministering to folks in surrounding villages...

Male Revolt: A slave rebellion in Brazil. It started during Ramadan, a Muslim fastening in January. Occurred in Salvador of Bahia region 1835. A group of black slaves & freedmen of 600+ rose up against the government. They were inspired by Muslim teachers & they were Yoruba. In Bahia, they called them "male" & knew about the Haitian Revolution. They all wore necklaces bearing Dessalines image. The leaders were Ahuna, Pacifico, Luis, Manoel, and Elesbao. Planned it on the (feast day of our grace), a celebration of religious holidays in Catholic faith, knowing the city would be less protected. The authority battled the rebellion, resulting in 80+ slaves killed, 300 captured, & 7 dead on authority side. There were multiple freed people telling former masters about the revolt. There was a freed woman named Sabina, who told a friend who was connected & had access to the whites about the revolt. Because she had a fight with her husband who was involved in the rebellion. #traitors #mixedpeople #snitch #brazil #bahia #slavery #rebellion #muslim #ramadan #feastday #catholic #blackpeople #freedmen #malerevolution #yoruba #portuguese #whitesupremacy #haitirevolution

In 1219, with the blessing of Saint Francis, Berard left Italy with Peter, Adjute, Accurs, Odo and Vitalis to preach in Morocco. While evangelizing the friars refused to leave when ordered. This annoyed the sultan. After enduring severe beatings and declining various bribes to renounce their faith in Jesus Christ, the friars were beheaded by the sultan himself on January 16, 1220. They were the first Franciscan martyrs. Hearing of their deaths, Francis proclaimed, “Now I can truly say that I have five Friars Minor!” #saintberardandcompanions #feastday #prayforus #martyrs #catholic #franciscan #saintfrancis #shadesofblue ourmotheroftheeucharist.org #lottygraphics @llotty1966

Sts. Berard, Peter, Adjute, Accurs, and Odo, pray for us!⠀ ⠀ These five friars were sent by St. Francis to Morroco to preach Christianity. Met with opposition they were eventually beaten and offered bribes to renounce their faith. Instead, they answered, "We despise all things for the sake of Christ."⠀ ⠀ May their heroic martyrdom inspire our faith today and teach us to desire only those things that are heavenly through the love of Christ.⠀ ⠀ #stberardandcompanions #feastday #martyrdom #prayforus #saintoftheday

A surprising four years passed between the death of the previous pope (St. Marcellinus) and the election of St. Marcellus I, due to the incredible intensity of the Diocletian Persecution. The persecution itself had subsided by 306, yet it still took nearly two years for a new Bishop of Rome to be elected. This fact alone indicates how incredibly decimated and scattered the Church was by that time.⠀ . ⠀ St. Marcellus seems to have resembled a drill sergeant. The recently-ended persecution had brought back the more lax believers who had renounced their faith in an effort to stay alive. They naturally wanted re-entry into the Church, but Marcellus wasn’t keen on letting them back in before they graduated from “Papa Marcellus’ Penitential Boot Camp”. The fight over his harsh penances must have been pretty over-the-top, because when penitents staged an uprising as a result, the tyrannical emperor (Maxentius) had Marcellus seized and exiled. The pope died soon thereafter.⠀ . ⠀ Marcellus I did a bang-up job re-organizing the Church, dividing Rome into 25 districts, or “titular” churches since their existing churches remained confiscated by the Roman government. Marcellus assigned a priest as head of each one with the duties of preparing catechumens for baptism (aka 4th-Century RCIA), directing public penances, burying the dead, and commemorating the martyrs. Marcellus did all this in a short time, having died after just 7(ish) months in office. Elected in May or June 308, he died January 16, the same day on which his feast is still celebrated.⠀ . ⠀ . ⠀ . ⠀ #thepopecast #saintoftheday #catholic #saints #catholiccreatives #popeoftheday #todayssaint #jesus #catholicism #newevangelization #orapronobis #christian #feastday #romancatholic #saint #pope #popes #papalhistory #history #churchhistory #martyrs

Today's saint - St. Fursey, pray for us!⠀ ⠀ Irish monastic founder, the brother of Sts. Foillan and Ulan, praised by St. Bede. Fursey was born on the island of Inisguia en Lough Carri, Ireland, as a noble. He founded Rathmat Abbey, now probably Killursa. In 630 Fursey and his friends went to East Anglia, England, where he founded a monastery near Ugremouth on land donated by King Sigebert. In his later years, Fursey went to France to build a monastery at Lagny, near Paris, France. He was buried in Picardy. St. Bede and others wrote about Fursey's intense ecstasies.⠀ ⠀ #catholic #catholics #catholicfaith #catholicsaint #catholicsaints #todayssaint #saintoftheday #romancatholic #romancatholics #romancatholicsaint #romancatholicsaints #catholicsaintoftheday #religious #latinmass #mass #fssp #church #catholictradition #traditions #tridentinemass #jesus #christ #feastday #catholicism ⠀ ⠀ www.churchmilitant.com

January 15th is also the Feast Day of St. Botonto🙏🏼💐. . . . On 28 December 1841, the relics of eight martyrs, including an ampule of blood, dating to the time of Diocletian, were found near the cemetery of Sant'Agnese outside Rome, Italy. All we know about them comes from an inscription that translates to “Botonto, who lived three years and two months, (is here) in peace.” Judging by the burial, the people were apparently noble, and probably Greek in origin, but we know nothing else about them. . . . #catholic #saint #catholicsaint #feast #feastday #saintoftheday
