Book review // Believe Me is a near-perfect thriller for me. The fantastic writing, complex characters and clever twist make it the kind of book that will stay with you for a while. A bit about the book: Claire is a struggling actor, a Brit in America without a green card. She needs work and money to survive. She agrees to become a decoy for a firm of divorce lawyers. Hired to entrap straying husbands, she must catch them on tape with their seductive propositions. The rules? Never hit on the mark directly. Make it clear you’re available, but he has to proposition you, not the other way around. The firm is after evidence, not coercion. The innocent have nothing to hide. Then the game changes. When the wife of one of Claire’s targets is violently murdered, the cops are sure the husband is to blame. Desperate to catch him before he kills again, they enlist Claire to lure him into a confession. Claire can do this. She’s brilliant at assuming a voice and an identity. For a woman who’s mastered the art of manipulation, how difficult could it be to tempt a killer into a trap? This is such a smart, fascinating read with twists that had me fooled on a number of occasions. My only criticism is that it was super dark, and (given the current news cycle), I’m looking for a little spark of hope in my thrillers at the moment. What do you think? Do you find it hard to read dark books when the news is depressing?

Lindsay was always an assertive, "take no prisoners” woman, which attracted a lot of men, as well as ladies. She believed it was because they thought of her as a challenge. Her suitors were not wrong, and for one guy, it was not the challenge he had in mind. Troy was a 35 year-old bartender, who was known for being sexist, domineering and would "fuck anything with a pulse". He and Lindsay, both walking, breathing timebombs, dated for an explosive three weeks. Their so-called relationship was built on screaming and throwing dinner plates at one another, then as they would say, have "amazing make-up sex", which made friends wonder if their brawls were just their version of foreplay. Three nights ago, Troy had crossed the line. During their "foreplay", he smacked Lindsay across the face, grabbed his crotch, and exclaimed, "Choke on this, you diseased cunt! But not before you suck it!” Lindsay said nothing, walked slowly toward him, unbuttoned his jeans, and proceeded to deep-throat him, but rather than choking, she bit his tuna can-sized peen off, claiming it as "self-defense".

Almost a month since I last posted and i decided to make this one about my cat. For normal people it may just be seen as a pet but to its companions it is more than a pet. It's a unspoken relationship. It's a bond. I love my little princess.❤ #poem #poems #quotes #bookstagram #book #bookclub #thriller #fiction #discover #words #word #wordporn #catsofinstagram #cat

#bookreview: All The Lives We Never Lived by Anuradha Roy --- Letters. Those intimate little bits of paper and ink that hold many worlds. A best friend who takes all our secrets and refrains from being judgemental. Also, an enemy who slays every icy vein and renders us defenceless. A lap that cradles at night to keep our insomnia at bay. Also, a gust that denudes our pretences and tramps on our breathing. Of many dimensions and flights – of success and defeat, of guilt and grief, of desire and melancholy, of murder and regret, of opportunities and lost chances – are letters. And they emerge as the only thread binding a mother and her son, separated not just by miles but times too. The novel opens in India’s pre-independence era, when the freedom movement is gathering steam and Nek Chand Rozario is caught amidst it. Liberal but uptight, he shall do his bit when the nation’s call comes. But his feisty, young wife, Gayatri has her heart set on something completely different – art. Her soul yearns for the sea. And one day, when a German couple comes visiting them, she crosses the barrier for good. Soon after, Nek Chand too, renounces his routine to answer the nationalistic fervour. And thus, her only regret, becomes the biggest casualty – Myshkin. A boy, all of 9, abandoned. Fast forward half-a-century. When the quiet horticulturist, Myshkin, who has lived his life in the hazy blanket of his mother’s memories, suddenly receives a bunch of her letters, several wounds come undone and his life veins are sluiced once again. In Roy’s compelling work, the pendulum sweeps from the 1920s to the 1970s, and in its throes remain captive, Gayatri and Myskhin, like little fossils who have a story to tell even when they are no longer vocal or valid in this world. The juxtaposition of political currents and individual agencies is deftly done. But what really reaches home is the prose – its lightness, akin to a dream that powers direction and action. Practically no one is driving the story; it is simply going on. Much like life. And the letters which continue to regale with the vignettes of journeys taken, and missed. . . . #anuradharoy #indianlit #fiction #literature #books

god this book felt long. number 32, #natelit 📚 and debut attempt for a book club I’ve started. probably not the wisest first choice. Interweaving narratives, probably 20+ characters (I lost count) and admittedly an interesting portrayal of New York at the turn of the 20th century - A city that’s very dark and not so welcoming. #books #bookstagram #literature #fiction #igbooks #booksofinstagram #instabooks #booklist #readinglist #amreading #read #johndospassos #manhattantransfer @penguinukbooks
