Since I'm running these workshops in the weight room, I thought I'd do a little post with some deadlifting tips. . . First off, I LOVE deadlifts. Working the whole posterior chain in one exercise and looking/feeling alpha as anything as you do it. Not only that but it's great for posture, explosive strength and stability. All lovely things I'm sure you'll agree. . . Anyway, here's a few pointers to nail your deadlifts and get the most out of them... 1. KEEP THE BAR CLOSE TO THE BODY Throughout the lift, we need to keep the bar as close to the body as we can to make sure it travels through the centre of the body to ensure balance and make sure we're not overworking the back. Start your lift with the bar against your shins to make sure of it. . 2. LOAD THE HAMSTRINGS People often neglect the hamstrings in this lift. By pushing the hips back in the set up, rather than loweribg them as we would in a squat, we can place tension in the hamstrings and the glutes. This way, we make sure that we're going to actively use them through the left rather than relying on the lower back to move the weight. . 3. AVOID RAISING THE HIPS TOO EARLY I see this so often in clients' early days of deadlifting. The legs extend, the glutes come up but the bar hardly moves from the ground. This puts a tonne of strain on the lower back and makes the lift inefficient. . 4. DON'T OVEREXTEND At the top of the movement, we need to stand straight to complete the lift. Often, however, people overextend and bring the hips out in front, leaning backwards. This is not a strong or stable position (sorry Mrs May) and is even more dangerous with the amount if weight we move in a deadlift so avoid, avoid, avoid! . There's loads more to a deadlift but there are just a few little tips to help you guys out. If you're still unsure book into a workshop or DM/email to arrange coaching or training!
