FORCE VECTOR! 💪 No, I’m not making stuff up, it’s a real thing. Aaannnnd, this real thing is REALLY IMPORTANT! Why? Because your muscles don’t work in isolation. Even our best attempts to concentrate all our energy on one muscle requires stabilizing forces by other muscles above, below or alongside that same joint. Changes in that stabilization and changes in the angle of load push your body to recruit more fibers within a given muscle, and challenge it to achieve a more complete overall development. Force vectors basically pertain to the angle or direction under which your body incurs a load (resistive force). When it comes to your glutes there are 3 primary force vectors: horizontal, vertical, lateral/rotary (with additional combinations thereof serving as sub-vectors). Failure to train any of the three not only hinders your gluteal potential (🍑👌), but actually places you at risk for injury when performing dynamic movements at your hip. So. . .how do you make sure you continue adding fertilizer to your peach 🍑 tree 🌳, and stave off potential hip injuries 🤕? 1. Make sure you hit all 3 vectors when training. 2. Force is vector specific. This basically means that if you practice applying force in a specific direction, you will get better at applying force in that direction! Eg as per the study, front squatting has a grater carryover to vertical leap, as both involve applying force in the same direction (vertical). Whereas, hip thrusts have a more significant impact on running speed, as they involve horizontal force production. . What does this mean for athletes? Pretty simple, if you want to get better at jumping use exercises that require you to apply force in the same direction as when you jump, straight down! If you want to get better at sprinting, include exercises that require you to apply force horizontally, eg hip thrusts or prowler marches/sprints! . Novices are the exception, if you’ve never strength trained properly you can pretty much do anything and as long as your muscles get stronger, you will get better at jumping/running. Advanced athletes need to be more specific with their training, but initially just improve your general strength, then further down the track you can get more specific, moving closer to exercises that mimic the actions of the sport! . Adaptation is task specific! SAID principle - specific adaptations to imposed demands! What you practice is what you get better at! . Øvelse en skaper kraft opp til siden og vil egne seg godt til idretter hvor du endrer retning, skøyter, langrenn skøyting med mer. Samtidig var det en killer for gluteus medius og minus. Øvelse to skaper kraft opp og frem og vil være god for løp, hopp og generell eksplosiv styrke. Strikken gjør slik at jeg kan ta i mer mot slutten av bevegelsen uten å måtte bremse. Band resisted broad jumps! (The band’s around my hips, it’s a little hard to see). . Force is vector specific. More specifically force is direction specific. Meaning that if you train to apply force in a certain direction, you get good at applying force in that specific direction! Common sense really! . As previously mentioned, you want to build a solid base of lower body strength before anything else, focusing on both knee dominant (squats) and hip dominant (deadlifts) movement patterns. . Developing a solid strength base (aim to eventually have athletes lifting 1.5 - 2x bodyweight for lower body lifts), means that the athlete now has the ability to apply more force into the ground and therefore potentially jump higher/run faster! You then need to teach the athlete to apply this force in the required direction. Eg if their goal is to run faster (what athlete doesn’t want to run faster?!), you then need to teach them to apply force horizontally. Great exercises for this include broad jumps, prowler marches/sprints and different sled pulling variations! And of course the best thing you can do to get faster is simply sprint! . The same goes for improving vertical leap. Practice applying force straight down into the ground! The squat movement pattern (which all athletes should be doing - whatever variation works) trains this action, so once you’ve built your strength up on this movement pattern, then train triple extension and other parts of the force velocity curve to really develop that leap. Same as sprinting though, if you want to get better at jumping, you have to jump! . Remember, whatever direction you practice applying force in, that’s what direction you’ll get good at applying force in! . The results of this little study are interesting, not too surprising though. There’s growing research which supports the fact that force is vector specific. Which basically means that if you practice applying force in a specific direction, you will only really get better at applying force in that direction! OT working laterally, using both arms, while upright. __________ Both athletes are attempting to apply and/or absorb force while moving in different directions, while both are trying to obtain a position of advantage over the other! __________ The DE is able to win this battle due to finding a better angle and position at the moment of engagement. __________ When training optimally to compete like this, we need to look at things like, joint angles, muscle lengths, force vectors and body positions when displaying power/force at engagement. How much core strength is needed when pressing/pushing like this, while moving and not having a stable platform?! __________ This is why we see big bench pressers struggle, when attempting sled presses while marching with heavy weight. How Specific is your training to your sport/ activity? Plyometrics is useful for improving many athletic performances such as running, change of direction, and jumps. An important factor to consider when training towards your activity is the force vector it goes through. The force vector is the direction in which the force is produced, and two important vectors are vertical vector (travelling in the line from the bottom of the body to the top) and horizontal vector (travelling in a line between the back of the body and the front of the body). Horizontal directed movements have been shown to be more affective for improving running, change of direction, and broad jumps. Vertical directed movements are best for improving movements like vertical jumps. A great plyometric exercise that travels through the horizontal movement is the drop jump into a broad jump. This has been shown to improve running performance. An example of this is shown in the video. I like using this for running as it trains in that vector. ➡️FORCE VECTOR THEORY🔀 La teoría de los vectores de fuerza propone una clasificación en relación a los 6 vectores que se manifiestan a través de la dirección y la magnitud (Mike Young). Dicha teoría fue desarrollada por Bret Contreras @bretcontreras1 y podría tener su origen en la correspondencia dinámica que ya nos hablaba Yuri Verskoshansky en su libro “Supertraining” en 1993. La correspondencia dinámica sugiere que a la hora de buscar la específicidad en el entrenamiento de cara a la mejora del rendimiento, los ejercicios prescritos deben REPLICAR las demandas del deporte (NO IMITAR MOVIMIENTOS) ya que de ser así le diríamos a los deportistas que practiquen más su deporte en vez de entrenar. A la hora de replicar dichas demandas se debe atender: FISIOLÓGICAMENTE (FC,Lactato,Vo2) BIOMECÁNICAMENTE (Calidad de movimiento @coach_david_m ) PSICOLOGÍCAMENTE (gestión de estrés, ansiedad, @javipoveda11 ) Y todo esto no es más que el famoso carácter multifactorial y las interacciones/sinergias que se producen entre todas las variables (Teoría sistemas dinámicos complejos) Ahora bien cuando queremos ponernos manos a la obra y entrenar dicha específicidad es donde vienen los problemas ya que buscamos construir la casa por el tejado mediante el uso de movimientos multiplanares con componentes cognitivos justificando que dicha propuesta genera variabilidad....¿Y los fundamentos donde los dejamos? Saben nuestros deportistas controlar los 6 vectores de forma cerrada y de forma CORRECTA? La mayoría de veces NO y si encima le añadimos ejercicios que combinen un mix de varios vectores (Multiplanar Training) imagínate el despropósito de compensaciones que pueden aparecer a la hora de ejecutar el ejercicio. Ya lo dijo Brigaud “Que el movimiento sea posible no significa que respete la fisiología articular”. Con todo esto no quiero parecer mejor profesional que nadie sino más bien todo lo contrario, mostrar mis carencias y metodologías que he adoptado mal con el fin de seguir mejorando como profesional y como persona. Para mi ese es el auténtico arte del entrenamiento, una mezcla de ciencia y experiencia empírica o como a mí personalmente me gusta llamarlo, Empirismo Científico.

Love this 1st drive phase by Va Tech softball rising freshman @canadavis! She's very strong and it shows in her ability to overcome the inertia of her body plus a weighted sled to create impressive extension through her back hip and ankle as she starts her sprint. We talk to our athletes a lot about creating and maintaining proper body angles and shin angles during acceleration and sprinting. There are certainly several factors that influence acceleration. Strength being one of them, but putting force into the ground at the right angle and in the right direction is equally if not more important.
