I wasn't healthy. I didn't know what really went into proper nutrition and exercise. I'm so glad I took that first step because I could not imagine ever going back to that point again. Oh the glamorous life of ultra running. - -(Warning- Long Post Race Recap) Here I am in all my glory at the finish of the Mt Hood 50 (miles). This race is broken up into 2 parts: 14 miles out and back to Frog Lake then 11 miles out and back to Warm Springs. I was told by veteran runners at the start of the race that the second half is the harder of the two...and it was. The race is absolutely beautiful and about 99% single track and mostly on the PCT. The first half had amazing views of Mt Hood, bridge crossings and lots of shade, which was a major blessing since it got pretty warm. The second half had a little less shade and a steep downhill, which meant a steep uphill on my return. The terrain was moderately technical with a mix of smooth runnable sections and sections lined with tree roots and rocks where you really had to pay attention. Quite a few people took some falls, but luckily no falls or re-rolled ankles for me, just a lot tripping and yelling at myself to pick up feet. I had some knee pain on the downhill and had to stop and stretch a bit, but overall, I had a great race. I felt great and ran strong the first half and only had one low-ish point between miles 41-46 where it was hot, my legs were angry and I was just ready to be done. I was very fortunate to have my cousin who lives in Oregon support and cheer me on. We camped pretty much right across from the start/finish line and he was at all the major aid stations, thanks cuz! Never miss a Monday!! Started today with an interval workout along the Thailand coastline thanks to @nordictrack followed by a 20 minutes HITT workout on the @onepeloton 🙌🏼 Finished up with a 2 mile cool down back on the treadmill and some abs 🏋🏽‍♀️Now that’s how I like to start my week. Very proud of my local running group @molevalleyrunners They've achieved so much in such a short space of time. Agenda for the day after British 10K: foam roll, rest, recover 😴😴 . . Yesterday was so very hot that even though I was not racing at my 💯%, my perceived effort was incredibly high and I ended up feeling quite unwell afterwards including a headache that a nap, electrolytes, food and drink couldn't cure - one of those rare times I succumbed to paracetamol. Besides the aftermath, will you believe me if I said that I really enjoyed the race? Beautiful London and a great atmosphere, I even ran most of it without headphones, which is rare for me! For anyone interested, my time was 1:08:29 and, while nowhere near my best, I'm pleased with it! Best bit - calf didn't complain as much as it has been the last many weeks and my physio has now recommended getting back to running few times a week, easy and for shorter distances but I'll take it - 13 weeks till @royalparkshalf 🍁🍁

I woke up yesterday morning for my run, but I couldn’t talk myself into it. I decided I would go this morning instead, but when I woke up at 7am this morning I still couldn’t talk myself into it. Suddenly I felt this big defeat. I told my hubby that I didn’t feel like I was meant to be a runner. Maybe running just isn’t for me. At 10am I decided to go run anyway. It was 92 degrees. It was hot. It was forced. I realized 2.5 miles in that I couldn’t do it anymore. I feel like running has always come and gone in my life. I have a hard time being consistent. I know this defeat won’t be forever, but right now I just don’t know how I’ll make it through the rest of summer. I’ll try to keep pushing.

In the last post we looked at weekly running volume and the risk of running related injuries among marathon runners.
An important take home message was that the risk of injury was significantly increased among runners with an average weekly training volume below 30kms/week as compared to runners with an average volume of 30-60kms/week. There was also no significant association found between persons running more than 60km compared to runners with an average weekly training volume of 30-60km week.
X So what does this mean?....well contrary to popular belief high training volumes alone do not cause running injuries. Rapid spikes in training volume is the problem whilst consistent training is the solution.
Even though studies have demonstrated greater injury rates with higher volumes it is important not to forget that a carefully staged programme that culminates in high workloads makes for durable and resilient runners. X Taking the Goldilocks approach to running “not too little and not too much” is important. Runners who leave their training too late (I have been guilty here on numerous occasions) or try to catch up and have big spikes in running volume have a greater risk of injury. X A common sense approach is not to increase weekly volumes by greater than 10%. Although a recent study appearing in The American Journal of Sports Medicine found no significant difference in novice runners when comparing 10% and 20% increases in volume. #boobsweat 🤷🏽‍♀️ 9 miles in this weather and I just took it easy. 🙌🏼 People always ask me how I look so good after running ALL the miles. 🤔 Truth is... I am a sweaty monster 👹 Drenched 💦 Hair is usually in a cyclone of sweat and knots 💀 And I’m usually red as a nice little cherry tomato 🍅 Do I care? Nope. Not anymore. I remember when I started working out at the gym and I was SO embarrassed 15 minutes into my workout when my top was soaking wet. I wore makeup my freshman year in college until I realized I wasn’t in there for anyone else but me. I don’t run for anyone else for me. And I sure as hell do not wear makeup to the gym anymore. 💁🏽‍♀️ I embrace it. My mom says it’s disgusting, but I think it’s amazing...
