Thinking that this is “just the way I am.” I’m just a “tired person.” Doing everything I possibly could just to keep my eyeballs open throughout the day. Melatonin is so much more than a sleep inducing hormone. The melatonin that puts you to bed is released by your pineal gland in your brain as a response to darkness. The majority of your melatonin is found in the gut similar to serotonin your feel good neuro transmitter. Melatonin in the gut have been linked to gi motility, inflammation and pain. I read a study that says that nurses doing some night shifts have 50% less melatonin versus control. Makes me wonder if lack of Melatonin plays a role in nurse's IBS. Yesterday was a recovery day for me. The day before I felt really good, and was so productive around the house. But I kept pushing myself to do just one more thing on my list, and then one more thing, until I was sacrificing sleep and ended up in a flare. It just felt so good to be up and about! . So, yesterday was a day for resting and recharging, since I wasn't good for much else. I slept for 11 hours. I hung out in bed, fed myself lots of nourishing food and broth. I kept well hydrated and took a long sea salt bath. That was all I could do for the day, and that's okay. . After this recharge day, I woke up today with my energy returned and the flare mostly subsided. Lesson learned - do what I can but don't push my physical limitations too much. I still have a long way to go in my healing journey. And NEVER sacrifice sleep. It's just as important as the food I eat. . I'm grateful for my stash of prepped food in the fridge and freezer, just in case I have bad days like this. Because I definitely would not have been up for cooking. Honestly I just love mushrooms. There is so much versatility in their meatiness and texture and texture is a big component of how I decide what to cook. If I had mushrooms every day for the rest of my life, my hunnie, my gut bacteria, and I would consider our lives happily lived. While maitakes are my favorite, I’ll never turn down shiitakes. Personally, I love mine roasted in the oven for that bit of chewy crunch and paired with another meaty veggie like sautéed or pan fried kale. Check out how simple these were to make in my recipe below! 😊🍄✨ - HOW TO: Preheat oven to 400F. Line a baking sheet with parchment. Spread the shiitakes onto the parchment paper. Drizzle a little avocado oil (I use @latourangelleartisanoils!) over them. Sprinkle garlic powder, then salt, then fresh cracked black pepper, and then ground mustard over the mushrooms (to taste). Bake for ~20 minutes. Remove from oven and give the baking tray a few good shakes to toss the mushrooms around. Bake for another 10-15 minutes or until the largest mushrooms are crisp. Remove from oven and add a few twists of lemon. Let’s talk about animal fats, which have been vilified for many years by the government, by “nutrition experts” and by the media. . . Before any intervention, Americans had subsisted off of a diet of about 30% or more of fats, and a good portion of that was saturated fats, fats from animals, dairy and eggs. And chronic disease like heart disease, diabetes, etc were virtually nonexistent. . . Then a few experts like Ancel Keys got started pushing the low fat diet agenda in the 1980s as a way to reduce cholesterol & heart disease, which had become one of the biggest factors of death as our diet shifted to more processed foods. None of his claims were backed by sound science or studies because of selection bias. This new low fat diet replaced healthy animal fats with processed vegetable oils, carbs and sugar. It’s own of the biggest deceptive marketing/PR pushes of time. Enough to make the low fat diet a nationally recommended diet. . . But here’s the truth: fat, especially saturated fat actually raises our good cholesterol levels (HDL) while keeling bad cholesterol (LDL) relatively low and reduces the risk of heart disease. 🤯😏Our bodies NEED cholesterol. Our brain needs it. We actually produce it — it’s a vital part of the cell membrane & is necessary for the synthesis of hormones, vitamin D and bile acids. For a few years now I thought by taking pills and taking vitamins I was “taking care of myself” it goes beyond that. I have changed my whole diet! I don’t eat gluten,dairy,sugar, fried food and I eat a low carb diet at the moment. I don’t have caffein and I drink a lot of water. I try to get 7 -8 hours sleep and my phone from now on at a certain time goes on silent and it’s my time with my fiancé. I burn essential oils every night and take my supplements from modere. I have always been a stress head and always worried if I did something in my life was it ok. I don’t care anymore. I know who I am and I don’t need anyone’s approval. I take more time out for myself, I meditate and spend less time around negative people or people that upset me. People that dismiss me and don’t support me. I pray and I also want to be a better person daily. I spend less time procrastinating now and more time doing. I have started walking daily and I will be slowly getting into light weight training. My go-to drink is @pureharvest turmeric latte with a spoonful of gelatin and one of collagen too. 🙌 This helps thicken the milk. I literally just pop a spoonful of each in my milk frother and it does it’s thing. Putting it in a blender with your milk at full speed will do the same thing. It will go lovely and frothy. 🤤 This is a great protein hit to keep me full. Ps, hope your budget includes a big grocery bill. - Got them? Okay, now wash, chop, prepare and store all your freshly bought produce. But wait! Don’t throw away the peels, stems, pits and skin—there’s nutrients in there! Find a way to work those in too. - Wait what? i made this super jazzy quinoa salad the other night and i can’t stop thinking about it! call me your stereotypical health coach coming in here with a quinoa salad, but i even blew my own mind with this one🔥the key to making any sort of interesting salad in my opinion is a using a mix of cooked and raw veg, healthy fats/oils, seasoned protein, a little salty dairy (if tolerated), herbs, and topping it off with some nuts/seed crunch. and of course tossing it with a bright vinegarette at the end. i really don’t measure with these kinds of things but here’s the gist: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1 cup cooked quinoa (i always soak for at least an hour for easy digestion and nutrient absorption) ~2 cups crunchy chickpeas (tossed in avo oil and salt, roasted at 400 til toasty, and charred under broiler at the end) 1 head roasted and charred garlic-broccoli crowns and stems (same as above) ~1 cup heirloom cherry tomatoes ~1/4 cup fresh sheep feta ~1/4 cup toasted pine nuts chopped basil ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ dressing: 2 cloves crushed garlic 1/4 cup olive oil juice of 1 lemon 1 tbs chili flakes salt+pepper to taste ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ toss it all up and enjoy⚡️

Let's talk about sage today. Only lately I have learned to love sage because it gives food a spicy-aromatic taste. I used to know sage only as candy or tea, but it has many other uses. Sage can also be bought as a dry spice but fresh sage leaves are much more aromatic in my opinion. Since you usually only need 2-3 leaves, the question arises, what to do with the rest, if you buy the sage fresh. There are several ways to freeze it, today I want to introduce two of them. First chop the sage. Put it for two-thirds into the compartments of an ice cube tray. Fill with olive oil and put into the freezer. The cubes should be consumed within 3-4 weeks. You can just heat the cubes in the pan and add your vegetables or other. Today I made cauliflower gnocchi with sage and had a side of baby kale seared in evoo and garlic. The second option is to freeze the whole leaves. Unlike other herbs, you can not just put them in a container and freeze them, usually that will end all mushy. Put the individual sage leaves on a sheet of wax paper, roll and freeze it. If you then need a few leaves, simply roll it up, take as much as you need and roll the paper back together. 🌱 🇩🇪 (siehe Kommentare)

Am I tracking macros? No. Am I eliminating anything? No. Am I doing timed nutrition? No. Am I doing any meal planning? No. . . . I have such an intuitive way of eating right now which isn’t going to last long. I have not been fueling my body and it goes with both binge eating and lack of nutrition. Monday morning I will be macro counting again. This is what I enjoy. This is how I find results. I love the flexibility. I love the visual. I love the freedom I can find in it. . . How do I count macros? Not strictly but strategically. Things such as spring mix I’m not too worried about. Foods like sunflower butter I need locked in a cabinet and have someone take away the key so you bet I’m tracking every gram. . . All of my clients track a little differently. Everyone finds a personalized approach and we work together as a team to find that. Not all of these include a scale. Not all of these include an app. Everyone’s different. I don’t remember if I’ve posted these rolls by @paleospirit before but they are worth another post regardless!!! They are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside! Soooo good! I hadn’t had bread in years, until I started making these rolls and sometimes I use them for sandwiches for the kids! . . @shannamarie34 turned me onto these rolls a few months ago as she is grain free too, and she adds collagen to them for the added nutritional benefits! I haven’t tried that yet but I plan to! Collagen strengthens your skin, hair and nails, reduces wrinkles, helps heal the gut and helps aid in better sleep. Collagen has no taste so it’s easy to sneak into recipes. . . Ingredients 1 cup tapioca flour (starch) 1/4 – 1/3 cup coconut flour 1 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 cup warm water 1/2 cup olive oil 1 large egg, whisked Instructions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Combine the tapioca flour (you can substitute arrowroot flour/starch) with the salt and 1/4 cup of the coconut flour in a medium bowl. Mix well. Pour in oil and warm water and stir. Add the whisked egg and continue mixing until well combined. If the mixture is too thin you should add one or two more tablespoons of coconut flour – one tablespoon at a time – until the mixture is a soft but somewhat sticky dough. Use a spatula or large spoon to scoop out about two tablespoons of the dough and roll into balls. You will be making about 10 rolls. Use extra tapioca flour in the palms of your hands so the dough does not stick. Place each roll of dough onto a greased baking pan, parchment paper or one covered with a Silpat (what I used) Bake for 35 minutes. Kicking off a little educational series here to help you guys continue taking steps toward better health! What better place to start than DIGESTION. Without proper digestion, it may not really matter what you eat because your body will not be able to break it down and digest it properly and therefore your cells will not be able to absorb the nutrients you are eating. If you are trying to eat healthily but you still seem to have numerous health issues, from bloating, heartburn, food sensitivities, stubborn weight loss, hypoglycemia, chronic illness, period problems/ infertility, irregular bowel movements, thyroid dysfunction, chronic fatigue, brain fog, asthma…( I could literally keep going...) your digestive system may not be working optimally. Optimal health begins in the gut! This is where my personal journey with health began. If you can relate to any of this, let’s set some standards straight: 1️⃣If you feel hopeless, confused, frustrated - You are not alone! So many people struggle or have struggled with various gut issues. Even though digestion is something that is unique to the individual (what works for someone may not work for you), there are some steps that everyone can take to help improve their digestion little by little. 2️⃣Common symptoms like heartburn, bloating after meals, going days without a bowel movement, or conversely, you can't keep from running to the bathroom are not “normal”. If you are experiencing these symptoms, your body is telling you that something is not working properly. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY and start investigating! 3️⃣You know your symptoms best, and you know when something is not right even when the test results say otherwise so don’t stop searching for an answer until you feel well! When your doctor tells you to eat more carbs, you bet there’s gonna be bagels involved! 🥯 I’ve been a bit MIA over here these past couple weeks since I’ve been dealing with some digestive issues. My meals haven’t been very exciting, or pretty! I’m still waiting for answers as to what’s going on in my body. I’m just starting to add back in more fruits and veggies and trying to gauge if there’s a change in the way I feel when I do so. Limiting fruits and veggies is harder than I thought it would be because I actually love them, but I’m really thankful to be in a place in my life where I can eat a whole bagel and not feel like I need to punish myself for doing so! 🙌🏼 Hope you’re all having a wonderful week!
I’ve found that there are 3 things that get in the way of people pursuing their wellness. 1. Time This one’s such a huge one. Time can feel so tight when you’re tackling life head on. It can take some juggling to find the time to meal prep, or squeeze a workout in, or order our wellness box, or research which style of eating suits us, or fill up your water bottle. Finances Yep. Money. When we’re looking at the cost of organic food, gym memberships, supplement price tags, or water filtration systems, it’s enough to make you cringe. ONE THING AT A TIME. Make the switch to organic from the dirty dozen list, add in a home workout instead of a recurring gym fee, add in the best supplements to support your greatest health, don’t get that coffee shop coffee and make it at home, then save the cash! Remember that saying - pay the farmer now or pay pharma later. And it’s absolutely the truth. 3. Energy This one is closely linked to time AND finances, because of those are stressed, you will be low on energy. And if your health is suffering, you will be low on energy. Getting in there and shaking up your daily habits WILL change this. Roll out your yoga mat and find yourself refreshed. Drink extra water and get outside to sweat. Hello, Thursday. I am sick. :-P Started feeling it last night, woke up with my husband’s cold. I called in sick and have not gotten since 5:45 AM. This explains my recent #ibsflareup! Anytime I get a cold, my gut blows up like a balloon, my #gerd shoots through the roof (and my esophagus), and my appetite goes down the drain (explains yesterday’s post)! Needless to say, I have not eaten all day, and I don’t want to. But if I WERE eating, it would probably be this smoothie I posted a while back (different pics)! D’eats: -1 cup steamed-then-frozen cauliflower -1 cup peeled-then-frozen zucchini (yellow & green) -1/3 cup #cottagecheese (or yogurt) -1 tbsp cashew cream (or nut butter, or coconut cream) -1 scoop @vitalproteins collagen peptides (either plain or vanilla) -salt, sweetener, vanilla extract (if desired) Topped with @lilsipper stuffed chocolate poundcake and my healthy caramel sauce (ask me for the recipe! I’ll post it!). Thankfully, it seems to be a short-lived cold, so I plan on going back to work for #friday! Stay healthy, everyone!
Is breakfast the most important meal of the day??🤔 Not necessarily... Having a long overnight fast allows your body to regenerate and fully cleanse. So skipping breakfast and having your first meal around 11 or 12pm isn't such a bad idea. It can be especially helpful for those with gut issues (IBS, chronic bloating, SIBO, etc.) as well as for fat loss. Buuuut, if you skip breakfast it's important to do these 3️⃣ things: 1) have a good-sized + balanced lunch (don't just snack around the office because you aren’t hungry yet). This needs to be a full meal. 2) have a protein snack between lunch and dinner 3) make sure your dinner is still small and at least 2/3 hours before bed A morning fast can lead to increased energy levels, symptom reduction, improved gut health, and weight management - if it's done right 😊 Are you a breakfast person? Restrictive eating VS. mindful eating . I wanted to brush upon this topic for others to better understand my lifestyle and why my lifestyle is the way it is. Here’s what I have to say: . . RESTRICTIVE EATING •avoiding foods and food groups that diet culture has labeled bad (I.e. fruit, white rice, carbs, fats, gluten etc) •avoiding foods high in calories, sugars, salts etc •avoiding foods for the fear of gaining weight •dieting MINDFUL EATING: •choosing whole, organic foods to keep toxins out of the body keeping it healthy and strong •not eating certain foods like gluten, dairy, peanuts, etc due to a food intolerance or allergy **** •practicing portion control to only eat the amount your body needs to be fueled •maintaining a balanced diet, treating yourself with not-so healthy foods once in a while . . ****This is how I define the difference of restrictive and mindful eating. To me I have a had a restrictive past but I also have a stomach disease. Which means although I don’t restrict in the way I used to with silly things like not eating fruit, or restricting my caloric intake, I do avoid certain foods to keep me from constantly being sick. Gluten is not bad for you, it just happens to be a food that many people, like me have trouble digesting. It won’t make you fat and if you have no problem digesting it then go get that gluten filled bread girl! I want to fuel my body right and I want to continue to thrive. I eat a very balanced diet but i do chose to eat whole, organic foods because it’s what keeps me feeling my best and prevents me from getting sick. I lived my whole life with illnesses, infections, asthma, allergies, and all other issues and I finally came to a point to stop living that way. I used to restrict for weight loss now I “restrict” for health. But I don’t see it as restricting, I see it as being mindful as to what I’m putting in my body. Reactions to food can be allergic and show up as immediate reactions to food (IgE), or they can be food sensitivities (IgG/IgA), which cause delayed responses. . Both are immune reactions to foods, and the same factors can trigger them. Among them are genetic susceptibility, processed foods, GMOs, chemicals in foods, pesticides e.t.c. . However, they show up in different ways. . Allergic reactions are more straightforward to determine because of the immediacy of the response. E.g., allergic reactions can cause anaphylaxis, congestion, and swelling of mucous membranes, inflammation of the sinuses, or even an asthma attack. . I know I talk a lot about baby and mamma’s bacteria. The human microbiome is formed from our mother’s bacteria during birth. But did you know that dad has A LOT to do with the maturity of his baby’s microbiome? Every time he plays, hugs, and kisses his baby, he shares some microbes - which help build a healthy gut. Our microbiomes aren’t fully formed until around the age of 3, and studies have found that most children have a gut microbiome just as similar to their father’s as their mother’s. So while I work at keeping my gut health in check, I also have to keep my eye on Daniel’s too. I swear, mom work never ends. 🙇🏼♀️
