History matters. Oppression is wrong. We know that history is told by those who are in power. It's time that we started acknowledging the actual discoverers of America, who were my ancestors, the Native American people groups and ancient South American tribes who traveled to the continents thousands of years ago. They were here before Columbus came, and they were killed, died by sicknesses brought from other countries, and enslaved when those who followed Columbus tried to exploit them. Americans of today have been taught for too long the simple message that "in 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue". But we have the opportunity to not pass on this twisted version of history, which so often overlooks the oppression of the original inhabitants of this country. We can teach our children the truth. For now, we celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day instead of Columbus Day on our own, but I'm hopeful that St. Louis will one day make an official change, as other cities are finally beginning to do. Harmony and I read some Native American legends, talked extensively about the history behind Columbus, and looked at some books about Native American life. I'm grateful that we as a nation are finally talking about this subject.

Eng: I love a bank holiday as the next person but the fact that we celebrate the genocide of an entire nation says a lot about the kind of country we live in and it makes me sick to my stomach. Columbus did NOT discover anything. Those nations were already there; he pillaged, raped and slaughtered entire civilisations and put Spain at the forefront of the slave trade. We shouldn’t be proud of it. I certainly am not. #noesmifiestanacional #fuckchristophercolumbus #happyindigenouspeoplesday #12-O #12deoctubrenadaquecelebrar #12deoctubre

We’re late posting about this because we don’t celebrate Columbus in Japan (luckily), but seeing people’s posts made us want to say Happy Indigenous Day! A lot of us are raised to believe in dualities of wild and civilized, that we are making linear “progress” in the world, that these atrocities towards indigenous peoples are in the past and weren’t THAT bad. Truth is: civilization is savage, many indigenous beliefs (about gender, sexuality, partnership, etc.) were more progressive than the ones today we are struggling to decolonize, these atrocities continue through erasure of land and voting rights, discrimination, appropriation, miseducation, to name a few. This is a huge generalization. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what needs to be learned and discussed. We are still learning. We will keep learning and questioning and voting responsibly, please join us. What this world needs more of is empathy, and what many of us lack in knowledge on this topic might be compensated partially by opening our hearts, minds, and third eyes. 🌿 Today I honor r o o t s, and the indigenous peoples of North America. I know the official occasion to do so was a couple days ago, but I hold this intention on all days I walk their land. I will try, for as long as I benefit from a system that has yet to compensate for genocide. - (Anyone gone to hit 'unfollow' yet?) I have received increasing feedback from both peers and the universe that I must speak and act more in alignment with my truth. 🌀 This is just the first step of that here on my social media. Just one post that barely sips at the bitter reality of how we all live within a world founded on violent colonial wrongs. - As I rested among the California redwoods this past weekend, I remembered how that peace is a privilege exchanged for past injustice. No we cannot alter history but we can be better moving forward. And it isn't enough to dub a previously shitty ‘holiday’ as Indigenous Peoples day. - There is a call for humanity to rise and lean into each other, to pour compassion into the collective. I know I am far from being alone in feeling this. 💜 - If you've read this far, thank you - and new moon blessings to you. 🌒 May we honor the First Nations of this land, honor the earth herself - and act accordingly. Look up foundations you can donate to or raise awareness for on social media that empower Native communities. Beyond that, I trust that opportunities will present themselves if you are open to seeing them. - And #fuckcolumbusday

A day late but still just as worthy of recognition. #happyindigenouspeoplesday Yesterday, we honored the victims of history. Those who faced the genocide and systematic abuse of their people. They deserve the recognition. — 📚BOOK RECOMMENDATION📚 “A People’s History of the United States” by Howard Zinn - This books covers United States History and World History through the lens of the oppressed and not the oppressors. The view of the Natives—not the white man. You will come across many revelatory moments in the book as you decolonize the way history was taught to you. — #brownpride #indigenous #people #howardzinn #apeopleshistory #history #natives #nativeamericans

Because Christopher Columbus doesn't deserve all the hype get ready for T.C. Cannon, an influential Native American artist of the 20th century. A member of the Kiowa Tribe with Caddo and French descent. Tragically, Cannon died in a car accident in 1978 aged 31 but his work and life will be remembered. #nativeamerican #happyindigenouspeoplesday #art #culturalappreciation #appreciate #painting
