I just wrote a blog post about our experience visiting with the Pataxo Indigenous People in their Reservation in Brazil🇧🇷. It would mean so much for me if you read the post and shared the information about their history, their continued struggle, their culture and their land.✊🏾⛰ SorayaBeheshti.com/blog/Pataxo-Indigenous-People ✨☮️ #indigenouspeoplesday #happyindigenouspeoplesday . . . . . . . . . #rainforestalliance#savetherainforest#veganfortheplanet#environmentaljustice#mataatlantica#atlanticforest#travelbrazil#indigenousrights#indigenouspride#indigenousresistance#mataatlântica#dametraveler#indigenouswomen#indigenouspeople#conscioustravel#ethicaltravel#ecotravel#savetherainforest#ecotourism#ecotourisme#exploretocreate#sustainabletourism#sustainabletravel#4thjulyweekend #vegan4thofjuly

When I was younger, I used to be very ashamed of my identity. I often tried to hide it or I became embarrassed when I told people “I’m Indigenous”. When I was younger, I only focused on the negative stereotypes surrounding my people and it fed the internalized racism within me. I still took part in ceremonies and respected my elders, but it’s hard to unlearn something that’s in your DNA. In university, I learned about “intergenerational trauma” and “lateral violence” - two very important terms that helped me begin healing. After adopting this new understanding, I began to see my people and their issues like never before - it was like seeing through a new pair of glasses, and I decided to stop my judgements on both myself and others. I wanted to be more sympathetic, patient, and hopeful when it came to my people. Now, when people ask me where I’m from or who I am, I proudly tell them with a smile, “I’m Indigenous—Plains Cree!” and I feel no shame in my heart. It’s a long journey to heal, but I know I’m not alone. I love my people and my culture, and I really love just how resilient we are. #happyindigenouspeoplesday ♥️
