This kid can EAT! Two soft boiled eggs and half a banana for breakfast. So after being sick for 3 days finally starting to eat again happy to enjoy this lovely low calorie rich in fiber and protien breakfast at last yummy !!! This came in at around 220 calories maybe less I did use a measuring scale but we have spinich cherry tomato egg white omelette with some kidney beans mushroom and a slice of toast OF COURSE !! How do you find introducing new foods to your child? Food refusal doesn’t always mean a child dislikes the food! They may be demonstrating independence or testing the boundaries of their behaviour. Rejecting new tastes can be normal, and repeating the number of times you offer a food can increase acceptance. . Each exposure to a new food increased familiarity. It can take many, many times for a child to become familiar and accepting of a new food. Key here is not to give up!! . It can also be normal for babies to make funny faces when they try new foods - doesn’t always mean they don’t like the food! . Keep meal times relaxed and as stress free as possible. #tbt Great memory of my first marathon in my 40's at the #rockandrollmarathon in San Diego. Prior to this marathon, I had run a half-marathon and when I finished that one I thought to myself: "I could never do a full marathon". But I did. I do have to admit that I love to challenge myself with difficult goals. The day of the marathon, I was very scared because the most I had ever run in my life was 14 miles and the race was over 26 miles. As I was training for the race, I injured my hip and had to stop training for over a month to let it heal. When I felt better, there was no time left to build up the mileage. When you train for long races, you gradually increase your long runs. So with the time I had left, I was able to build it up to 14 miles. I had no idea if I could do 26. I had a coach who encouraged me and reminded me that I had been very focused and fit for months and that my endurance was probably still there.tI was still scared anyway but I am not a quitter, so I decided to give it a try. It did not help when the day of the race turned out to be very hot and people were fainting and had to be rescued by ambulances. As I would see this, I kept thinking, what am I doing? I am a mom of a young girl and I do not want to die. However, I stayed focused on taking one step, one run at a time. And to my surprise, not only did I finished my first marathon, but I finished with a time that qualified me for the prestigious #bostonmarathon, for which I signed up after. This experience proved to me that when you prepare yourself well with good nutrition, the right coaches, and strong support groups, you are capable of incredible things at any age. And when you do incredible things, you stretch your beliefs of what you are capable of doing. Never stop growing or reaching out for your dreams and goals. But remember to always prepare yourself adequately with the right resources and tools, and the right coaching and support. #throwbackthursday to growing up in Prince Edward Island, circa 1992! Here’s me as an 8-year old, cuddling with our family kitty Sweetpea. This was around the age I first learned that not everyone is kind to animals. I remember seeing footage of seals being killed on TV, and feeling so heartbroken that anyone could do this. Children are taught by parents and society to suppress their natural instincts to show kindness to animals. Animal exploitation is a learned behaviour. No child is born wanting to contribute to suffering. Instead, they’re taught that killing and eating animals is just the way it is. That some animals are friends, and some are food. They’re taught to love and appreciate farmed animals like cows, pigs, and chickens when they see them on hobby farms, but turn a blind eye to the suffering and slaughter of billions at the hands of the modern farming industry. They’re taught to depersonalize meat, dairy, eggs, and other animal products. That zoos are great because it’s nice to see cute animals. I’m lucky that my mom @sharonlabchuk went vegetarian with me a few years after this pic was taken. Who knows if I would have ended up as an animal rights lawyer had I been told to suppress the empathy I felt. So here’s a shout out to all the parents out there raising compassionate kiddos from day one, and to the parents who listen up and change themselves when their children lead the way. If you didn’t know this about me, I’m a major foodie. I didn’t know how much I really loved cooking, until I went switched to a plant-based diet in April 2017. It forced me to get creative in the kitchen, allowed me to play with spices and herbs, and make food that actually made my body feel so nourished. I learned there are so many flavors that I enjoy that are also super beneficial for different aspects of my everyday life.
