While doing a book review of Dr Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease for my Cardiac Yoga professional practicum at @premayogainstitute I came across these words by Dr Ornish that I’d like to share: . “We sometimes tend to view an advance in medicine as being a new drug, a new surgical technique, something high-tech and expensive. I get a lot of❓in my office about which vitamins 💊are best to take🤔. Remember, we take these to supplement deficiencies. The most common levels I see deficient on blood work include: Vitamin D, Omega 3, & B12. •Vitamin D is important for 💪🏼 & healthy bones. Vit D is uniquely made in the skin from exposure to the 🌞 and D levels are highest in the summer. Most over-the-counter (OTC) multivitamins include Vit D but not enough. Look for Vit D3 2000 IU daily. There is a prescription Vit D 50,000 IU weekly for those with more significant deficiencies. Vit D is being linked to autoimmune conditions, cancers, & mental health. •Omega 3 is important for protecting the brain against dementia, ❤️ health, reducing leptin levels to assist in weight loss, & mental health. Many OTC 🐟oil supplements are full of fillers, fats & mercury. As a common rule of 👍🏻, if your bottle of fish oil 👃🏻like fish, it’s most likely cheaply made- go ahead & pass on it. Look for 🐠 oil made in the natural triglyceride form like @nordicnaturals. Get omega 3 naturally by consuming: fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel), and in plant forms (ALA) like almonds, walnuts, 🥑, olive oil, and hemp/chia/flax seeds •B12 deficiencies may present as fatigue, numbness & tingling or mental fogginess. B12 comes in both oral medications & 💉 forms. I usually recommend injections for the 8 weeks in those with levels < 400. Pick a B12 supplement that is combined w/ a minimum of 800 mcg of B9 (folate). For those with the MTHFR gene mutations, be sure to choose a methylated B9 & B12 option so the body can utilize it effectively. Other supplements I recommend in my practice are: •Magnesium, B2, CoQ10, & Vit D for migraine prevention 😣 •CoQ10, a natural & potent antioxidant, to fight & neutralize free radicals. For those w/ ❤️disease or on cholesterol meds be sure to get 200 mg/day. You can also find CoQ10 naturally in 🍗meats, cruciferous 🥦vegetables, 🍓fruits, 🥜 & legumes, but it’s much easier – & safer – to get the nutrient in supplement form. Choose the ubiquinol form of CoQ10 which is better absorbed by the body. For those w/ heavy menses & ⬇️ iron, my go-to iron is Integra because it is so well-tolerated 🙌🏻 #hearthealth
