It's the last day of North Coast Open Studios - thank you for all the support! . Here are a few wood fired planters. The first is a mix of different clays, two and three are glazed, the fourth is clay from our back yard and the fifth is my California stoneware recipe. These pots are unglazed, scorched in the wood kiln. The second and third have scorch marks ( #hidasuki ) from straw. . Ask @shannonsullivanstudio about a 20% discount on my work (I'm in Japan right now for #csusummerarts2019 #summerartsjapan !) if you want to buy anything today. Thank you! .

Veškeré součásti čajového setu drží výborně teplotu, skvěle padnou do ruky a mají optimální váhu a dobré vyvážení. Beautiful firing.. called #hidasuki-syosei.. #okayama #bizen #ceramics #firing #japan

Salt. Eats away ([a way][its way]through) clay. . Here: I started: some straw grew from the ground, or had grown; now brown. Flexible in a way, thin-walled and hollow. Cut from the roots take, let dry further. Now dry. . Buy 2 kilograms of table salt. . Pour 5+ liters of tap water into a bucket. . (The water comes from the faucet; 120<x<180 kilometers earlier it was spring water bubbling in the Alps their mountain pastures. Then along aquifers and pipes into Vienna, water has flown that way for over one hundred years; earlier it was well water.) . In the bucket it's no longer pure, and then less. 4 kg of salt per 10 liters of water, thereabouts, 0.4 kg per 1 liter, that's what water 30% salt by weight? Seawater is 3.5% salt by weight. . The bucket of salt, into the bucket of salt the straw. Soak. . And here: the aftermath. I've done this before, fired salt-soaked/straw-wrapped pots, done it and shown it too here. But here: I show: I've gone too far bois. . Salt, table salt, sodium chloride. At temperatures, it vaporizes, the sodium splits you get Na and HCl. The Na sticks around, or, you see here. . The brown mottled where no Na. The browns, reds, where some. And then, where more, bubbly. And then, where the closest contact: the straw wrapped the tightest. the four spots on top (the straw being wrapped in an X, you see), rough and now gone. The clay, it's gone. The cup: it's now a cup. . #localmaterials #hidasuki #yunomi #cup #teacup #glazetesting #electrickiln #wildclay #localclay #pottery #contemporaryceramics #handmade #handcraft #stoneware #madeinaustria

An expanse. The surface of a tile; clay from Lower Austria with scorch marks providing the incidental glaze, a glaze—or—a decoration. . Fired to 1280°C, surprise, in an electric kiln, surprise. The organics i.e. the straw that makes the scorch, they burn off and make the room smell from about 300°C to about 500°C, the organics burn off and attach themselves to the pot yes, their nearest neighbor, and too to the kiln and the elements and my nose, apparently. The kiln is not perfectly ventilating, apparently. Fire, let cool down, the red remains; white whisps of ash sit above blow them away. . The scorches: Where thick, a dark dried-blood brown blistering above. Where not as thick, a red, an orange-red at the surface as if in. Where lacking, the surface. . (I don't always describe colors in the same words as others do. Are my definitions less correct or less precise? Shifted along the spectrum? Based on erroneous input? Flat-out wrong? . The scorches they're the same end as from the vase of before. The tile it's the same shape and clay as the tile of before. (A question about pairs, the question of before.) . I've once fired a cup wrapped in straw; in the kiln set/sat atop this very tile. I stole the cup from the kiln with arm-sized pliers at >1200°C. Torturous fast cooling. There were no scorches visible. The clay was a darker color throughout, but no scorches visible. The darker clay color I'll attribute to the 80°C difference. The scorch though. Does slow cooling make the scorch? (make a better scorch?) Peer-reviewed journal articles on the question; scanning electron microscopes. . Peer-reviewed journal articles on pottery aren't written by potters. (Fact-check: _mostly_ true.) . #hidasuki #ceramics #ceramic #clay #maker #artisan #stoneware #makersmovement #cremerging #craft #craftsmanship #handmade #kiln #electrickiln #handmade #interiordesign #keramik #ceramicart #ceramiclover #potterycollection #contemporaryceramics #handcrafted #wildclay #localclay #madeinvienna

A vase; clay; just a hint of (added) color. . Hidasuki—that is this: red scorch marks—easy to overdo. "Just wrap some straw around it and fire it." . On the other side: easy to underdo? Or: when you make just a little scorch, every little bit of it counts. . Here: just a little bit, just around the neck of a vase. The rest of the vase: the clay. . At 29 cm tall / 8 cm wide it's one of the taller pieces I've made (in one piece, on the wheel): certainly, the tallest this thin. Fired on its side in the electric kiln, you can fire on the side when there's no glaze. (You can fire on the size when there's glaze, you just have to support it with seashells or another.) . Lots of clay, bare clay, an expanse. On the expanse: finger marks, tool marks, the rough sandy surface. If the whole vase was just this sandy surface I wouldn't be happy. Does the little bit of blush around the neck make the rest bearable? . The rest: a mottled brown, rough (again, from the sand). . On the clay, from the clay, the sand you see: white specks they rise above the rest of the surface. Above/out of. Silica? Feldspar? At one point I thought I knew what of those two those little globules were. Now I think it's the other one. Maybe it's a third option. Regardless: they came with the clay as I dug it from the ground. They pop out as pimples and I find them almost as delightful. They only show up on unglazed surfaces; the glazes suck them up. The one downside of this clay. But you can't have everything you want? (And-but if I see them as unwelcome: how do you?) . This is me comparing myself against pictures I find on the internet. . Finger marks deep impressions, that overlap with the tooling down towards the bottom. The bottom: curves in, when the pot was wet I did that because I thought it would parallel with the curving-in at the top, now I'm wondering if it wouldn't have been better to leave it straight so as to make at the foot 90-degree angle with the presenting surface, a bullet of sorts. Too late. . #hidasuki #ceramics #ceramic #clay #maker #artisan #stoneware #makersmovement #cremerging #craft #craftsmanship #handmade #kiln #electrickiln #handcrafted #wildclay #localclay #madeinvienna

A cup, and surfaces on a cup. And now, words about: . This cup has conflicting surfaces and gives me conflicting emotions. Only some of those are because of this the cup itself. What emotions does a cup give you? You hold it more than others. I show cups more than other pots. I make cups more than other pots. I use cups more than other pots. . I have a very good coffee cup that I use most mornings, but it's perfect. I don't think when I use it. . Here you see the surface from one angle. How many angles does a picture say? . As I see it: . From the bottom going up: orange streaks strokes on an orange background. . At the top left to right: darkness, moving lighter. Then abrupt: a different kind of darkness. . When wood burns in a kiln and the ash rushes through the kiln and lands on the pots in the kiln, and here you are. . But where were you before you got there? I was home, and home, and home. Where is home? I was having, letting, forced to others fired for me. I didn't know what they did, and then I did, and then it wasn't enough to let them do what I could. We all can, but only at that point could I. I was in a friend's van, 5 hours from home, with 5 to go back, the difference being with a pottery wheel in the back. I was in a rented van, 3 hours from home, with 3 to go back, the difference being with a kiln in the back. . This pot sat on a shelf a half-hour bicycle ride away from me for quite some time. It was mine, then it was there, and now it's mine, and then? But now. What do you say when saying hello again to an intimate an inanimate object? . This problem this problem that problem that spot here and there. Finally, I'm not so attached to you as I was. Finally, I can (have I changed or have you?) talk to you as yours and not mine. . You: you, the audience, the readers: what I consider faults in mine, you should too. What I consider success in mine, you should too. Should you? Who am I to say? I make. Drink. . #woodfiredpottery #guinomi #sake #shuki #localclay #wildclay #hidasuki #process #bizen #handmadeceramics #茶の湯 #茶碗好き #茶道 #makersmovement #ceramices #madeinvienna
