Armenian mountain views. 😍 And at the start of the short and sweet hike up to Smbataberd (an old fortress) was a lovely lady serving tea and coffee. #brewwithaview #optoutside #hiketheworld

Three of our volunteers have been out this week installing signposts on several sections of the #transcaucasiantrail route in Dilijan National Park! (The third being our Land Rover Georgina, obviously.) • We've seen several different signpost styles being tried out in Armenia over the last year or so, and we're of the opinion that a variety of approaches is best at this (early) stage so we can judge what works and what doesn't based on actual evidence. So far, the evidence is that all attempts tend to suffer varying degrees of vandalism, from being defaced to being completely destroyed or even stolen. Our idealistic theory is that people are less likely to vandalise things they love to look at – and who doesn't appreciate the workmanship of a beautiful, hand-crafted wooden signpost blending perfectly with its forest backdrop? • Well, that's the theory, anyway. Now it's time to test it... • #cnf #caucasusnaturefund #hikearmenia #dilijannationalpark #dilijan #tavush #armenia #caucasus #hiking #carpentry #woodwork #volunteering

Garni is well known for its ancient pagan temple, but it is also a great area to go hiking. With amazing views like these, it’s a must in any hiker’s itinerary ☁️

This is the wonderfully evocative #matosavank, one of five ancient monasteries in #dilijannationalpark. I've just published a new blog post with the stories behind this and the other four sites, as well as info on how to reach them all on foot. Link in bio...

Check out Khndzoresk bridge, a 160 metre-long suspension bridge which provides access to the historic cave village of Khndzoresk. It is notoriously known to swing back and forth as people walk across, so it is not for the faint of heart, but those who dare to cross will not regret it!

Armenian Environmentalism: Here’s one thing I was surprised to find in Armenia: a strong environmental movement. I know there’s plenty of environmental destruction in the area, but I was absolutely stunned when I heard that in Noyemberyan they had successfully protested to stop a mining project from coming to the town. When the construction of a mine began in Amulsar region, I knew people who went to protest, and I heard about it nonstop on the news and internet. In my travels, I met many people who described themselves as “nature-lovers,” had started projects in their communities, or were otherwise involved in environmentalism. While we have many more resources such as recycling systems and greater reusable materials in the U.S., I rarely see as much care for and involvement with the environment. So I want to use this post to remind you of what Armenia told me: take a look at the environment around you. Appreciate it, spend time with it, and next time you’re deciding between using plastic keurig cups or biodegradable coffee filters, don’t forget that it’s the only earth we all share.

It's no exaggeration to say that Armenia is one big open-air museum. One artifact that hikers will find on our trails is khachkars—medieval Christian cross stones unique to Armenia, usually erected as tombstones, memorials, and even for protection 📷: @shant.kal

Located below Tatev Monastery, Devil’s Bridge is a natural masterpiece. Created through the erosion of volcanic rock over millenia, Devil’s Bridge has the Vorotan River flowing directly through it, making it is a perfect place for a hike and a swim. ⛰💧
