We got our butts handed to us on our last backpacking trip on the #arizonatrail. It had been about 4 months since we had hit the trail hard and we worked up some #hikerhunger during our 5 day trip. On our third night on the trail we landed at Rock Crossing Campground which afforded us a nice flat place to pitch our tent and unlimited water on demand. When you’re a hungry hiker and find out pizza can be delivered to a trail head...you do it! . On our hike the FT still went through Camp Crystal Lake/ Keystone Airpark. When we arrived at the campsite that early evening after walking through some rain, we flipped through our book to see what was around the town of Keystone Heights. Sure enough there was a pizza place listed and we gave them a call to see if they would deliver to the Crystal Lake entrance. On the AT there are several shelters close to roads where local food delivery is available but I never thought we would have this opportunity on the FT. We explained what we were doing and told them about the FT and sure enough we managed to get pizza on the trail! Instant Mashed Potatoes Days since town: 5 . When I saw a campsite waypoint labeled, “rattlesnake lives here!” I was SO excited and eager to camp there. That meant that it was low, and warm, and dry. That was the campsite for me, and I welcome the company. My water bottles have been freezing solid at night (not to mention the rest of me!) and the cold has felt nearly suffocating once the sun goes down. So the relief of warmth and to finally be at Kennedy Meadows South is overwhelming. Now I just have to get to Mexico. . I lollygagged on this last section, sleeping in until I was warmed by the sun, so I was very low on food by the last night before hitting town. I’ve been carrying this package of Idahoan Four Cheese Mashed Potatoes as my emergency food for the last 300 miles, so I guess this was time to dig in. I figured, “this is the staple food for most hikers, I can handle it this once!” But wow. Nope. Still with no stove, I rehydrated the package with cold water. Yuck. I added some of my Cajun trail mix to try to make it crunchy and perhaps palatable, but still only got down about half of the package. The sun blazed down on my tired body like the breath of a white dragon. The blue sky gave way to its fiery rays, trying its best to melt my skin. On this mountain, a scorching inferno followed me with each step that I make. The once cold autumn mountain air turned dry, hot, and humid. As if its only objective is to dry out my body and prevent me from walking. I felt like a soup inside a microwave where the sun was trying to boil all the liquids in my body. I opened my arms in show of defiance, like a brave knight getting ready to fight the dragon. . I pressed on in my journey, one step at a time, with the thought of you with me on my mind. Tonight, I will cuddle with you on our bedroom with the full blast of the air conditioner on. The cold air will chill our bodies as we hide inside our blanket, hugging and loving each other before we go to sleep. Perhaps I will take you out later and go to your favorite restaurant. I would look at your beautiful eyes, and listen to how your day was. . I think I am pretty lucky. With all the crime, hatred and chaos going on in the world, I get to go home with a loving woman like you. The life that we have, the home we are building, the love we are nurturing, I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world. It is because I love you.
