Dread Nation is civil war meets zombies. Our protagonist Jane is trained in combat and etiquette and she kicks butt! I had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook (read by Bahni Turpin, who also read for The Hate U Give) and was alternately laughing and anxiously gripping my steering wheel.

#10photochallenge : Standing Up I recently finished reading The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. This novel is both disturbing and beautiful as it details the journey of its main character through the South on her quest for freedom. Whitehead takes a story we likely grew up thinking we knew and creates one we need to know with a perspective we need to understand. History is often messier than our textbooks teach us, and stories like The Underground Railroad offer perspectives into the human experience that are often overlooked or ignored. I will be recommending this book to just about everyone! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ @annebogel . . . #bookstagram #bookish #theundergroundrailroad #colsonwhitehead #nationalbookaward #pulitzer #pulitzerprize #fiction #historicalfiction #books #reading #bookworm #bookrecommendation #bookreview #lovetoread #mymerrymusings #alwaysreading #whattoread #fivestars #history #booklove

❙ 📖 @atriabooks [partner] . Look at this hardcover book! Isn't it beautiful? This picture really doesn't do it justice though because it's definitely prettier in person! . Admiring this book made me wonder, do y'all prefer hardcovers or paperbacks? I think paperbacks are easier to read so I prefer them but I also think hardcovers are always so dang stunning 😍 . SYNOPSIS ❙ available now! England 1648. A dangerous time for a woman to be different... . Midsummer’s Eve, 1648, and England is in the grip of civil war between renegade King and rebellious Parliament. The struggle reaches every corner of the kingdom, even to the remote Tidelands – the marshy landscape of the south coast. . Alinor, a descendant of wise women, crushed by poverty and superstition, waits in the graveyard under the full moon for a ghost who will declare her free from her abusive husband. Instead she meets James, a young man on the run, and shows him the secret ways across the treacherous marsh, not knowing that she is leading disaster into the heart of her life. . Suspected of possessing dark secrets in superstitious times, Alinor’s ambition and determination mark her out from her neighbours. This is the time of witch-mania, and Alinor, a woman without a husband, skilled with herbs, suddenly enriched, arouses envy in her rivals and fear among the villagers, who are ready to take lethal action into their own hands. . #bookish #amreading #bookstagram #morebooks #bookbloggers #bookrecommendations #readersofig #booknerdingans #readerlife #booksharks #bookstack #mustread #currentlyreading #bookshelfie #bookgeek #alwaysreading #toberead #bookspines #whattoread #readeverywhere #philippagregory #tidelands #historicalfiction #fictionbooks #ireadfiction #fictionreading #mystery #atriabooks

I've been really drawn to Historical Fiction recently. ▪ Side note: is the 90's considered historical? If so, then I feel really old 🙈

Cassanova. Heath Ledger as Cassanova? Yes, he is awesome as always. But it's also a movie, where I saw Natalie Dormer (one of the queens of historical and costume dramas) for the first time. Book Review of ‘The Hunger’ by Alma Katsu Rating: 5/5🌟 Music: Combination of ‘The Revenant’ soundtrack and snow-muffled fiddle music. An absolutely chilling reading experience! It creeps on you then bursts out in some truly disturbing moments. The balance of historical accuracy and artistic freedom is very well crafted, I see why there have been multiple comparisons with ‘The Terror’ (another 5🌟 book), though I’d argue a significant difference: the historical record with the HMS Terror and Erebus voyage is utterly blank for a good amount of time, whereas there is a lot of information about the Donner Party, so there’s more of a weaving together in this case that I imagine was tricky to do. This weaving elevates the historical narrative into a larger story of humanity at its best and worst. Historical fiction characters can be difficult to connect to due to the time gap and difference in societal norms, but you connect with the members of the Donner Party through universal themes of love, hate, parental concern, and societal issues such as marriage and sexuality that we still face today. The supernatural element was my favourite part of this book. It manifests so many different concepts within the exploration of humanity: fear of the Other, subversion of societal relationships such as parent and child, the wilderness as threat and sanctuary, to the fight for survival. The one that piques my interest is the thin grasp on humanity we all have, and how ambiguous we can make it. Some of the historical differences occasionally caught me out whilst reading, but it doesn’t detract from the reading experience at all, I’ve just read/listened to way too much Donner Party content 😂 I’d recommend this book to true crime fans looking for something a bit easier to emotionally connect to (one of the advantages of fiction), and true crime newbies as a transitional text. If you are fascinated by how human arrogance and greed results in one of American history’s most disturbing events, read this book, though maybe not at night. (No cannibal jokes this time, it would be in bad taste). #bookstagram #bookreview #thehunger #almakatsu #historicalfiction #horror

The Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum has been a go-to for me, as the items there fit perfectly into my timeframe and place. Imagine a woman then, with all the children and chores, and making this and everything else the family needed. . Brigham Young, the Mormon Prophet at the time, had this to say about women: "We believe that women are useful, not only to sweep houses, wash dishes, make beds, and raise babies, but that they should stand behind the counter, study law or physic, or become good bookkeepers and be able to do the business in any counting house, and all this to enlarge their sphere of usefulness for the benefit of society at large. In following these things they but answer the design of their creation." Brigham Young. Journal of Discourses. In turn-of-the-20th century Texas, the Berachah Home for the Redemption and Protection of Erring Girls is an unprecedented beacon of hope for young women consigned to the dangerous poverty of the streets by birth, circumstance, or personal tragedy. Built in 1903 on the dusty outskirts of Arlington, a remote dot between Dallas and Fort Worth’s red-light districts, the progressive home bucks public opinion by offering faith, training, and rehabilitation to prostitutes, addicts, unwed mothers, and “ruined” girls without forcibly separating mothers from children. When Lizzie Bates and Mattie McBride meet there—one sick and abused, but desperately clinging to her young daughter, the other jilted by the beau who fathered her ailing son—they form a friendship that will see them through unbearable loss, heartbreak, difficult choices, and ultimately, diverging paths. A century later, Cate Sutton, a reclusive university librarian, uncovers the hidden histories of the two troubled women as she stumbles upon the cemetery on the home’s former grounds and begins to comb through its archives in her library. Pulled by an indescribable connection, what Cate discovers about their stories leads her to confront her own heartbreaking past, and to reclaim the life she thought she'd let go forever. With great pathos and powerful emotional resonance, Home for Erring and Outcast Girls explores the dark roads that lead us to ruin, and the paths we take to return to ourselves. @julie_kibler #juliekibler #fiction #homeforerringandoutcastgirls #saga #outcast #girls #historical #historicalfiction #texas #mothersandchildren #friendship #

It’s a stormy Wednesday 😻 • I’m curious and it’s simple today. What are you all reading? • It’s Wednesday and it’s been a good one so far I think. Ive been hanging with my pup. Had the orthopedic just say let’s do the surgery to fix my ankle. I finally got myself a white gel pen. And it’s thundering out. Woot! I will admit though that my reading lately has been going SOO slowly! I’ve only made it to about page 80 of my current read. I’m intrigued so far a lot! I just haven’t had the time to truly devote the time I want toward it. I received my pre-order of Philippa Gregory's new book, Tidelands, today. I am aware I said I wasn't particularly enamoured with her previous book, The Last Tudor, but I have hopes for this one. It's set during the English Civil War, and instead of focusing on the royal courts, nobility and monarchy, this novel goes back to her roots, featuring fictional characters. I am looking forward to reading about a different period in history, I have dipped into the mid 1600s earlier this year with Helen Steadman's 'Widdershins' (I still have the sequel, 'Sunwise' to read), so I am keen to explore this time more through fiction and hopefully non fiction soon! #bookstagram #booklover #bibliophile #bookcollector #igreads #instaread #instabook #booknerd #bookgeek #toberead #toread #unreadbooks #philippagregory #historicalfiction #tidelands #englishcivilwar #roundheads #royalists #parliamentarians #seventeenthcentury #17thcentury #1640s

Do you like to read historical fiction or drama books? I can't say this is my favorite genre of books to read but I don't have much experience with it, the only book I have ever read in this genre being The Kite Runner. I did really enjoy The Kite Runner when I read it because I got a glimpse of what living in Afghanistan was like during that time period so I'm hopeful that I will love this book as well because of getting to gain a deeper understanding of the WWII years. • I found All the Light We Cannot See for $1 at a used book sale and had to pick it up since I read so many positive things about this book. I used this quote in the beginning of my book, Blackberries Are Red When Green.⠀ A favorite!⠀

Release Date: Feb. 19, 2016 Banished from their colony over a religious dispute, a family is plagued with paranoia and fear when their youngest son goes missing, while living near a mysterious forest. Robert Eggers' directorial debut, this New-England-based supernatural film channels from traditional horror and classic folktales of witchcraft, relying on disturbing implications and dark symbolism. It shows that Eggers did his research, confirmed at the very end of the film before the credits roll, because this really takes you back in time to the 1630s. The dialogue, the sets, the costumes, and the way the characters behave feels so realistic and accurate, making this horror flick feel like a period piece. While there are some moments that drag on, making this 90min film feel longer than it is, the plot as a whole is a slow-burner, building up to an ending that leaves you wanting more. The musical score sets up an eerie tone all throughout; the cinematography is precise and bleak, the camera almost always lingering on the characters; and the performances are amazing. Anya Taylor-Joy in particular delivers a strong performance, but really, everyone is so committed to the story and to their roles, portraying a desperate and broken family dynamic perfectly. It's discomforting to watch a family getting consumed by panic, leading to grim and violent repercussions. Similar to Ari Aster's Hereditary, this film takes the time to allow the characters to process the mysterious events going on around them, adding in a psychological factor, unlike mainstream horror movies. It's an intricately well-written film that maintains an ominous atmosphere. It tells a simple, straightforward scary story that never gets too complicated or too out-of-hand for its own good. It's well contained. This just felt like it was made by someone who actually knew what they were doing, avoiding typical tropes and clichés, telling a classic story in a very modern way. As always, fear is subjective to everyone, so I can't guarantee anyone will feel the same as I did when watching this. But if you're into classic horror like Rosemary's Baby or The Exorcist, this one's right up your alley.

Currently reading Book 2 of the His Fair Assassin trilogy, but mostly crocheting, binge watching The Office. 🤧

With in total five books to release, this will be a major book launch! YHP is looking forward to it since in a few months YHP will be celebrating the one year anniversary. It’s also important to think about book releases and more importantly: book marketing. How can it be made more fun? The only visual thing about a book is the cover, but there it stops. YHP has exciting plans for the book launch of the Business Wise series and the Christmas books. Think: unusual book marketing, engagement and ways to reach out to our potential readers by doing the unusual. More announcements in due course. The dates for the releases haven’t been officially set, November is the aim! “A Hundred Summers” by Beatriz Williams 🏖: • The Plot: In 1931, Smith College student Lily Dane is smitten when she meets Nick Greenwald, the star quarterback at Dartmouth. The two hit it off and are instantly inseparable, but not everyone approves of their relationship... • Fast forward to summer, 1938. Lily has arrived from New York City to spend the summer at her family's beach home in Seaview, Rhode Island. She is excited for a fun and relaxing summer...until the Greenwald's arrive in town: Nick, and his new wife (Lily's former best friend) Budgie. Lily spends the summer trying to subdue her feelings for Nick (which never truly went away), and Budgie tries to rekindle their friendship. The summer is filled with secrets, scandal, and - with a historic hurricane approaching - danger. • My Thoughts 💭: While I love historical fiction, I don't love the romance genre, because I don't enjoy cheesy dialogue, insta-love, and can do without the steamy scenes. While this book is a historical romance and contains all of those elements, I still enjoyed it overall. I loved the duel timelines of 1931 and 1938, and I absolutely adored the Rhode Island summer setting. The last third of the book really picks up and the chapters surrounding the 1938 hurricane were especially interesting. Throughout the book, I was wondering how the title played into the story, and it is explained in the historical note at the end, which I found to be very compelling! • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • • • #ahundredsummers #beatrizwilliams #summerreading #augustreads #elliereads #beachread #igreads #bookreview #bookstagram #bookworm #booknerd #historicalfiction

Cornwall is my happy place... 🌊💚 While I’ve been away I’ve been reading the first of the Poldark books, as I love the television series and thought I should give the books a try too! I wish I’d brought some Daphne du Maurier with me too, but maybe next time... 📚 I love choosing novels set in the places I’m visiting, and so of course I’m currently pretending I’m roaming around the Cornish coastline and over the fields of Nampara with my own Ross Poldark... 💭🐚🌾🌿🌊💭 • • • • #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookblog #bookblogger #poldark #cornwall #cornishcoast #nampara #tintagelcastle #roaming #myhappyplace #literature #books #mybookshelf #bookworm #bookish #bookgeek #historicalfiction #daphnedumaurier #booklover #travelreads

A tragic story of family, friends, and country, The Island of Sea Women dives into Korean history and what physical and mental scars violence can leave. This turbulent story takes the reader on a journey across many decades and is a beautifully written story that is both heartbreaking and touching. This historical fiction ranks among the top stories of and for strong women. It is a must read for any xenophile or for anyone interested in women’s history. I cringed, I laughed, I cried. This story is epic. my library books selection... 📚 So many good books here that I'm desperate to read! I used to visit my local library every week when I was younger, and sadly it's now closed down 😥. However I've found another library I can go to, a 20 minute drive way. I have rekindled my love for libraries, and it's really reminded me of their importance in our communities. Libraries are a unique and valuable resource and a cornerstone of a wealth of information. It's so sad to see them being closed down, one after the other 😥📚. • • • • #bookish #bookishfeatures #booksofinstagram #bibliophile #bookworm #bookblogger #bookstagrammer #amreading #currentlyreading #thefamiliars #staceyhalls #thedollmaker #ninaallan #thetoymakers #robertdinsdale #theessexserpent #sarahperry #circe #madelinemiller #library #libraryhaul #saveourlibraries #history #historicalfiction #hardbacks #paperbacks #goodreads #toberead #tbr

1956. Jodhpur. My mother and father go to the cinema house to see The Birth of a Baby, a 1938 American film that was banned in New York State by court ruling. For months, my parents have heard: The film is indecent. The Pope has warned Catholics not to see it. It shows a woman, naked and bleeding. + + This has only made Indians more curious. The theater is packed. And it will be for months. Everyone who goes to see the movie comes out shocked.+ + My parents go home without saying a word. They have just seen an educational film showing the live birth of a baby. In a few months, my mother will give birth to my older brother (the baby in this photo). What was she feeling after seeing the movie? Frightened? Reassured? Disgusted? Freaked out? We’ve come a long way, haven’t we? Or have we?

Latest read. A stunning historical novel by #alixnathan about a failed scientific experiment during the Enlightenment.

The Spanish Jewels... • • 🎨by @stephanie_noto • • 1️⃣Draft • Story Time... • 1789, off the eastern shore of Mexico • The light coming from the slits on the roof of the cave allowed just the right amount of light in as the entered the third tavern of the cave. The four pirates, who embarked on this mission were in search of "The Spanish Jewels." A treasure that had been lost for over two hundred years after it was stolen from the Natives of the land by an unknown group of mercenaries. • Originally it was supposed to be bargaining chips to deal with the natives who ruled the Central American planes. One spy came back with reports of "absolute savagery" and "unexplainable grotesities" the letter he left behind in his camp, before being caught by the natives read, • "We are going to need much more than gold to deal with these savages. They rip the hearts out of living humans in front of crowds ranging in the tens of thousands. It's a sort of spectacle. My lord, we will need the spear more than the gold. And God's ancient wisdom above all. There are no rules in this land. No bargaining chips will outweigh the minds of their belief systems if we want to conquer these lands." • The letter was never delivered but discovered in the rubble 1 year later in 1655... ____________ Prepare yourself for whatever ... • @stephanie_noto ... • ... decides to do with her career.
