⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Broken Girls There's something wrong at Idlewild Hall, an all-girls boarding school in Vermont. The isolated school has been shuttered for decades but a new owner has bought it with the intention of reopening the school, or so it appears. Journalist Fiona Sheridan is out to figure out why. There are multiple stories here, and the narrative is both past (1950s) and present (2014) and told from different points of view. This is a historical fiction that's part eerie ghost story and part true crime. I really enjoyed the parts that were set in the 50s and the friendship between the girls, I could've easily read an entire book on just them. Overall, pretty gripping read! Black and white seemed perfect for this ghoulish tale. Also, it's my 100th post on #bookstagram! 🍾🤩📖🎂🍻🧡 @storywitches wanted to see my first post, and I thought this was the perfect spot so swipe over to see all the glory, lol. #firstpostvslastpost. I've tagged a few more people to show yours as well. You can put it in your stories and of course this is totally optional! Happy Monday, everyone! I didn’t do any reading this weekend because it was @danevernon’s birthday, but I’m back to it with this one, which I started on Thursday. SO excited to start this ARC of @authorjenniferrobson’s THE GOWN. I fell in love with the gorgeous cover & the synopsis sounds ah-mazing!!! The Gown is out December 31, 2019. Definitely one to add to your TBR. From the internationally bestselling author of Somewhere in France comes an enthralling historical novel about one of the most famous wedding dresses of the twentieth century—Queen Elizabeth’s wedding gown—and the fascinating women who made it. “Millions will welcome this joyous event as a flash of color on the long road we have to travel.” —Sir Winston Churchill on the news of Princess Elizabeth’s forthcoming wedding London, 1947: Besieged by the harshest winter in living memory, burdened by onerous shortages and rationing, the people of postwar Britain are enduring lives of quiet desperation despite their nation’s recent victory. Among them are Ann Hughes and Miriam Dassin, embroiderers at the famed Mayfair fashion house of Norman Hartnell. Together they forge an unlikely friendship, but their nascent hopes for a brighter future are tested when they are chosen for a once-in-a-lifetime honor: taking part in the creation of Princess Elizabeth’s wedding gown. Toronto, 2016: More than half a century later, Heather Mackenzie seeks to unravel the mystery of a set of embroidered flowers, a legacy from her late grandmother. How did her beloved Nan, a woman who never spoke of her old life in Britain, come to possess the priceless embroideries that so closely resemble the motifs on the stunning gown worn by Queen Elizabeth II at her wedding almost seventy years before? And what was her Nan’s connection to the celebrated textile artist and holocaust survivor Miriam Dassin? With The Gown, Jennifer Robson takes us inside the workrooms where one of the most famous wedding gowns in history was created. Balancing behind-the-scenes details with a sweeping portrait of a society left reeling by the calamitous costs of victory, she introduces readers to three unforgettable heroines, their points of view alternating and intersecting throughout its pages, whose lives are woven together by the pain of survival, the bonds of friendship, and the redemptive power of love.

The ultimate sacrifice is also buying another good book when the rest of your amazing TBR pile is looking at you in betrayal. “There was no heaven here. Eternal life meant waking up as a putrid corpse.” — Something Strange and Deadly, Susan Dennard 🍂 . . Are you a fan of zombie books? I can’t get enough of them. The only thing better than a zombie book is one that’s also historical fiction. The Something Strange and Deadly trilogy is one that immediately caught my eye, not only because of the gorgeous covers, but because it’s an historical trilogy that takes place during the Victorian era. I adore everything Victorian, I also adore zombies, so it’s like this trilogy was made just for me. I’ve been doing really well with reading things I own and books that have been on my tbr for ages, and I’m hoping to continue my goal by reading this next as it fits both of the above. 🍂 . Read this wonderful book by Hannah Kent a while back. It follows Agnes Magnusdottir, the last person to be executed in Iceland, during her last months. It's very well researched and Kent paints a vivid picture of how these people lived. The way Agnes and Margret are portrayed really hit home for me; I've known so many women from older generations that were like them, never being able to sit down and relax because there are always more things that need to be done. #bookstagram #hannahkent #burialrites #burialritesnovel #historicalfiction

_______________ #susanlopezrubio #elencanto #unpostochiamatoincanto @deaplanetalibri #fiction #classics #historical #cuba #historicalfiction #bookstragram #bookworm #bookish  #historicalromance  #bibliophile #bookishfeature #bookphotography #leamicizielibrose  #consiglidilettura #libridaleggere

#fireflies IS #free ON #kindle!!! Reviewed by Anne Boling for Readers' Favorite 5 Stars Read the full review at readersfavorite.com/book-review/12222 The plot quickly drew me in. One of the many things I liked about this book was the development of not only the main characters but of the secondary ones as well. While certain characters had smaller parts, I felt as if I knew them. This is not a good versus evil paranormal story; it is a story filled with the goodness of the Whelan family. Fireflies is an excellent read and appropriate for middle school, young adults, and adults ******************* #love #honor #spirits #angels #historicalfiction #freeebooks #kindlebooks #giveaway #histfict #histfic #greatreads #yafiction #immigrants #irish #paranormal #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bibliophile #authorsofinstagram #writersofinstagram #freeread #goodread #familysaga #booklovers #booklover #novel #kindlefire

Thank you to @tlcbooktours and @tnzfiction for the opportunity to review this #freebook. #partner . . Friends! I read Becoming Mrs. Lewis while on vacation last week, and what an experience it was! The story follows as A friendship-turned-love blossoms between poet Joy Davidman and author C.S. Lewis. Davidman and Lewis were both converted atheists, and the story focuses on their pen-pal friendship as they write letters across the ocean, discussing everything from the weather to the meaning of life. I read much of the book while relaxing in an idyllic setting, and it was the perfect place for me to take in and process some of the deep thoughts and questions posed in the book. It made the reading so, so enjoyable. . . Have you ever had a book come to you at the perfect time, or in the perfect place? "We had our breakfasts--whatever happens in a house, robbery or murder, it doesn't matter, you must have your breakfast." Wilkie Collins, The Moonstone The Moonstone is reputed to be the first modern English detective novel and also described as 'the best' by T.S. Eliot. The Moonstone is an Indian diamond which was brought to England to be given as a gift to Rachel Verrinder on her eighteenth birthday. But in the night the stone disappears and Sergeant Cuff is brought in to investigate. The first half of the book is narrated by the steward of the house, Betteredge, and subsequent chapters by some of the suspects or acquaintances of the Verrinder family. I really liked the first half, Betteredge is a great character- he relates every crisis to the book Robinson Crusoe and has funny comments about the main suspects. I found the second half of the book quite slow going, I was quite close to giving up but managed to persevere. Its an interesting read, especially the structure which is unusual but have to say I prefer Collins' The Woman in White. . . . #themoonstone #wilkiecollins #detectivenovel #mystery #historicalfiction #reading #classics #readersofinstagram #igreads #igreading #bibliophile #bookworm #books #bookstagram #fiction
