Take 2! Changed my mind about how to share this wondrousness. Apologies for the extra bandwidth consumed! — Past and present: Keith Gilmore, (@portrushrnli LOM) thought I might like to see the crew photograph he took on a self-timer way back in 1994. He was right! We were clearly thinking along similar lines with the composition too. Look closely and you can see the flying bridge and aerials of the old Arun class poking up behind the crew. In mine, you’ll see the modern day Severn class in the background to the left. Wonderful to see some of the same faces in both photographs. Keith’s in the front row on the far right with “25 years knocked off the clock” to use his words! #lifeboatstationproject #lsp19 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #collodion #wetplatecollodion #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #northernireland #portrush #thenandnow #pastandpresent #imperioussevern #arunack

It’s always excellent to put faces to notifications! While I was working at Portrush, a long term follower of the project appeared at Neena’s door. Tom Foster, who goes by the handle of @mrfermanaghman, is also a former lifeboat volunteer with @eknrnli and the Marketing Manager of torch manufacturer @olight.uk. Tom not only came along to say hello, but he was also bearing gifts for the project, the two torches pictured here. Now, I wouldn’t normally have thought of torches as ‘incredible pieces of kit’ but these are exactly that. They’re really robustly made and I love their magnetic USB chargers. Amazing. Head over to their feed to see what I mean and may you never be left in the dark again! Thanks again, Tom, and great to finally meet you. #lifeboatstationproject #olight #olightflashlights #olightuk #batonpro #h2rnova

Des Austin, the @portrushrnli Coxswain, was really keen to have the lifeboat included in his portrait. Unfortunately, we were still blighted by some really stormy conditions. If we went anywhere near the lifeboat, my big ol’ camera would act like a sail! So, I came up with this solution — to shield the camera from the wind inside the boathouse and compose Des’ portrait in such a way that the Severn Class lifeboat would be ‘just there’ over his shoulder. Because the wind was so strong, I had to think on my feet all day, even using the harbour wall as a windbreak when it came to making the crew photograph later that evening. You can now see all four photographs in the Mission Map, Galleries and the brand new County Antrim print page. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp19 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #collodion #wetplatecollodion #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #northernireland #portrush

The weather really deteriorated that evening in Cushendall. Once again, it meant I was working right at the limits of wet plate collodion, so thank goodness we were able to make the crew portrait (see previous post) before the crew launched on exercise. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp19 #rnli #sar #lifeboat #maritime #nautical #northernireland #redbay #cushendall

Remember this ambrotype of Liam O’Brien? We made it at Cushendall (home to Redbay @rnli lifeboat station) on 3rd September, the first portrait on my journey around the shores of Northern Ireland. I mentioned earlier in the week that it was a minor miracle that we managed to make photographs in those squally downpours and gale force winds. But, as you can see, we certainly managed and now they’re all in the usual places on the site — the Mission Map, Galleries and Limited Edition Print pages. As an aside, Redbay lifeboat station is quite unusual: it’s historically an inshore lifeboat station but the first I’ve come across where the all-weather lifeboat is stationed on trial, hence the second portrait in this sequence featuring four lifeboat lifeboat Coxswains rather than my usual portrait of one full-timer. Scroll to the end and you’ll see the single plate of the crew we squeezed in before the weather really deteriorated! The portrait features the Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat to the left and the all-weather Trent class lifeboat on the pier to the right. Perhaps it’s now clear why she was so close to shore in the colour photograph I posted a few days ago? The crew had kindly brought her alongside from her mooring buoy for the final photograph of the day. In the portrait of Liam, she’s floating in the distance over his shoulder. Thank you to everyone who helped me make these photographs at Redbay. I’ve been burning the midnight oil to complete the brand new Northern Ireland section for the Limited Edition Print pages on the site. The County Antrim, Fermanagh and Down pages are now built along with the navigation that integrates them all with each other and everything else. The view from @donaghadee_lifeboat (pictured) heads them up, a rare image because it includes a lighthouse AND a lifeboat! Now it’s time to gradually add all the work from Mission 19 starting with Redbay and @portrushrnli on the County Antrim page over the next few days. The joy in some of the old photographs of the herring women I’ve seen today has put me in mind of the people I’ve met on my journey. It strikes me that there might well be a similar core ethos — it’s not an easy job, but just get on with it and make time to smile when you can! So delighted to have been at the opening of the new lifeboat station for @RNLI Penlee today. Such an amazing community, incredibly dedicated and brave volunteers, really worth supporting! A couple of years ago I walked 300 miles around the Cornish coastpath to raise money for Penlee and the RNLI, they risk everything to keep@us safe and volunteers work so hard to keep it all going. Always love to see somebody else’s perspective on the day’s proceedings. I was particularly grateful to Todd Watson for these photographs at Bangor. I was so run off my feet all day long that I barely got a chance to take any behind the scenes photographs myself! As an aside, I was pretty devastated when I lost the rubber eye cup from my @sinarswiss loupe last year. I’ve owned this item for nearly two decades! I scoured the shore but couldn’t find it. Must look for a replacement some time. It looks like my @redwingshoes need resoling again too. More jobs for the winter list! Todd also photographed me adopting a new strategy when it came to conveying some instructions during a private commission. I shared that particular story on my Patreon page in a post called ‘The Speaking Cap’. The five women of @burnhamonsearnli have made the cover of @rnli’s Lifeboat magazine. There’s a poignant story behind this portrait, which I’d like to share with you here. I made a special stop on 11th September 2016, breaking the journey between RNLI Headquarters and South Wales — a second visit to the station with the specific aim of making a portrait of the volunteer women. You see, Vashti (centre) had been pretty ill during the first visit back in July 2015 and wasn't able to get into her drysuit. So, I made a promise to return. Vashti struggled on the day but remained stoic. Ultimately, she only had the energy for one plate with her crewmates. No chance for a second attempt. So, this is it. The only one. Thankfully, Vashti loved it. She generously bought a print for the lifeboat station and also requested print No.29, her crew number. Vashti told me that she would be gifting it to her son, as this photograph is how she would like to be remembered by him. Vashti died a few months later on 28th January 2017. Rest in peace, Vashti. It was a pleasure to meet you, a hero indeed. When I’m working on the coast, I use two cameras: my 114 year old 12x10 inch Thornton Pickard to make the glass plates and my iPhone to tell the story of the journey. Barely a day goes by without somebody asking, “Lovely old camera! Does it still work?” Tongue-in-cheek, I usually reply along the lines of, “I hope so!” Of course, the truth is that there’s very little to go wrong, so it “works” very well indeed — like any camera, it’s just a black box and a lens. Physics, chemistry and raw talent take care of the rest. The irony is that people should be asking about the iPhone rather than my plate camera! As I tap this, I’m in the throes of decommissioning my iPhone 7 Plus, which has sadly come to the end of its useful working life after nearly three years’ hard use. When Apple announced last year that they’d sold over 6 billion iPhones, I wasn’t impressed, I was appalled. I really wrestle with the fact that I’m one of “those people” who has now owned five iPhones over the last decade. But I don’t see a way round it other than to make sure I use the device as long as the battery — and Apple — will allow. I’ve recycled them all, so I hope they haven’t entirely gone to waste. And I hope the fact that we’ve had our car for over 17 years and that I’ve up-cycled an ambulance goes some way to restoring the balance. I know the iPhone is a lot more than “just a camera”, but isn’t it great that the 1905 plate camera just keeps on trucking after all these years and you’ll never need compatible software to view the photographs I make with it? #lifeboatstationproject #lsp19 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #scotland #stranraer #collodion #wetplatecollodion

Home again, home again: Thank you to the hundreds of people I met and photographed in Northern Ireland and Scotland on Mission 19; to everyone who waited patiently for a portrait, filled my water containers, kept me fed and watered, put a roof over my head, ran errands, spread the word, manoeuvred lifeboats or lent me their washing machine! It’s been yet another special chapter in this epic journey o’ mine. As an aside, I’ve just watched the news for the first time in four weeks. After four weeks on the coast, I’m on my way home. When Antony from @stranraerrnli placed the final orange dot of 2019 on Neena’s Mission Map yesterday, I couldn’t help but think again that it really is filling up now. I mentioned yesterday that there are 90 stations and 3 more years to go. As Neena and I wend our weary way back to Newcastle upon Tyne, the sights and sounds of the last few weeks and years are echoing around in mind. The last five years really have been an adventure. If I’ve learned just one thing during that time, it’s that I have no idea what magical experiences and happenstances lie in store over the next three years. Northern Ireland complete! Today, after 22 days on the road and 10 lifeboat stations, I completed my documentation of Northern Ireland. The fine gentleman you see pictured here is Derek Rea, the Larne lifeboat mechanic — a portrait we made around 1pm today. I’m so grateful for Derek’s help in the lead up and during my visit. He’s been there for me right from the moment I arrived yesterday, furnishing me with coffee and assistance wherever required. Thank you, Derek, especially for the jam doughnut! ‪Now that’s an arrival! This evening we drove straight off the ferry from Strangford, passed @portaferryrnli (the green-roofed building) and pulled up outside @theportaferryhotel in just 50 seconds! Come and see us tomorrow if you’re nearby — we’ll be around all day culminating in the crew portrait at 6pm. ‪Oh dear. I’m running out of superlatives to describe the warmth, support and enthusiasm for my project here in Northern Ireland. I’ve had such an excellent time with the lifeboat volunteers of Kilkeel who made me feel so welcome in their town. Now preparing for @portaferryrnli tomorrow. New podcast: “We May Not Come Back From This One.” A spine-chilling conversation with Mark Mitchell, @portrushrnli Deputy Coxswain, 30 years after he went to sea on a shout that became the subject of one of the most iconic lifeboat photographs ever made. Thank you to @j9oyy from @eknrnli for Neena’s latest addition — a brand new ‘Learning Norn Irish’ panel to pass the time during all those three minute waits! It neatly hides all that mess from the early years too. Today I’ve: packed Neena after my time with Carrybridge RNLI; attended to phone calls, emails and social media; driven for 3 hours; checked into my hotel; met the @newcastlernli crew and polished tomorrow’s glass. Private commissions have become part of the project’s lifeblood while I’m on the road. This session with @rnli volunteer Shea Daly had a bit of a twist yesterday or, rather, a @twisted_automotive. Shea wanted two of his favourite vehicles to feature in his portrait — Carrybridge RNLI’s state-of-the-art Atlantic 85 lifeboat and his treasured Land Rover Defender 90. Swipe to see the finished plate, a 17 elephant exposure in the horrendous weather. I really enjoyed meeting Shea, a dynamic chap who runs @ultimatemobiledetailing_ni — worth checking out! ‪I’ve arrived in Newcastle, County Down, and I’m now into double-figures of @rnli stations remaining. As I opened Neena’s side door to grab my bags, I saw the Mission Map with fresh eyes. Delighted to have had the opportunity to have my photograph taken yesterday by Jack Lowe when he was a Carrybridge RNLI as part of his #lifeboatstationproject. A gentleman to work with and the glass plate looks brilliant. All the very best of luck as you enter the long final stretch of the project @lordlowe. The project keeps on rollin' and the days are flying by with the incredible lifeboat volunteers of Northern Ireland. The warm welcomes I've been receiving have been so moving too. Now it's time to move on from the inland stations of @eknrnli and Carrybridge — I'm heading back to the coast ready for @newcastlernli tomorrow and Kilkeel on Sunday. See you there? While I make the three hour drive to Newcastle RNLI this afternoon ready for our big day tomorrow, you might like to catch up with yesterday’s live interview with Mark Patterson on BBC Radio Foyle. Search for that combo and I’m sure you’ll find it on @bbcsounds. Failing that, the link’s on my Twitter and FB. The interview starts 37 minutes in. This week has rattled by. Unbelievably, another station visit is already over and what a superb couple of days with the incredible @portrushrnli volunteers. I can’t thank them enough for the support, patience, conversation and laughs. Special thanks to Keith Gilmore (the station’s LOM) and his wife Fiona for hosting me. And thank you to all those who stopped by to say hello, even buying a keyring or two! Before I left, I spent an hour or so recording a conversation with a veteran crew member. Truly hair raising stuff, which I’ll share on my Patreon page soon. Life on the road can be pretty seamless but, finally, I have a window to share a couple of things with you. The atrocious weather has played a huge part in proceedings over the last couple of days but, somehow, we managed to squeeze most of the photographs into gaps between the squalls and before the wind really came a howlin’ through. Pictured: Liam O’Brien’s freshly-made portrait on a sheet of 12x10 inch glass sitting in a tray of water. Liam is the Redbay Station Mechanic and you can see his pride and joy — the station’s Trent class lifeboat — over his shoulder on a mooring buoy, always ready. And there’s one more detail of note: Liam’s sitting on the red basalt rock that encrusts the local coastline, the very reason this area is known as Redbay. Heartfelt thanks to Liam and the Redbay crew for making me feel so welcome. Like many others before them, they couldn’t do enough to help me and wouldn’t have it that I spent a single penny during my stay, including my accommodation across the road. The support I’m receiving for my journey is gathering pace. After so many difficult years, words really can’t describe my gratitude. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp19 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #northernireland #redbay

Land ho! Northern Ireland on the horizon. It’s been a long day but very smooth going. I’ve popped in to meet the excellent Redbay crew, been steered towards a nice restaurant for a lovely bit of fish, spent an hour or so polishing ten sheets of glass and now I’m all prepared for the first photographs of Mission 19 tomorrow morning. Everything’s ready! It’s one of those times when it’s hard to imagine that I’ll be in Northern Ireland this time tomorrow. And just 48 hours from now, I’ll have photographed the first lifeboat station of Mission 19. With everything in place, I now feel relaxed and excited for the month ahead. Neena and I set off for the @poferries terminal at Cairnryan first thing in the morning! Pictured: A clip from the beautiful film that @pete_naylor made about my journey from 2015 to 2016. Cheers! The last of the summer’s print orders are now on their way to their new homes and the final preparations for Monday’s departure are in full swing. As an aside, you may not know that I was a printmaker and retoucher to other photographers, artists, ad agencies and design groups for over 12 years before I embarked on The Lifeboat Station Project. Around 2012, there was a point in that chapter when I realised the challenges were starting to run out. My hard drives and print table were constantly full of other people’s work and I was very conscious that my own photography had gone by the wayside. In short, it was an interesting and relatively stable tangent but not what I intended. So when I started thinking about how I might change that situation, there was one vital criterion that I was determined to realise: the print table should be full of my work rather than other people’s. This little espresso cup holds the worn down pencils that I’ve used since January 2015 to sign the prints that I sell to help fund the project. As I signed those prints this week, it dawned on me that this little cup signifies the realisation of that dream. #lifeboatstationproject

This year, we're giving our supporters a unique and special way to commemorate loved ones who will never be forgotten by adding their names to the side of a brand-new Shannon class lifeboat. We can now reveal that the #launchamemory lifeboat will be stationed at Invergordon in Scotland, where the volunteers, pictured here by @lordlowe as part of his #lifeboatstationproject have been saving lives for more than 40 years.

7 years ago, the gift of a light bulb moment forged the early sparks of The Lifeboat Station Project. 2 years later, after lots of thinking, honing and refining, the @rnli gave me their blessing to start creating my vision for a huge photographic archive that would shine a light on a band of incredible people — the lifeboat volunteers who selflessly serve others to keep our shores as safe as possible. Over 4 and a half years ago, I photographed my first lifeboat station and, well, I just kept going. Over 2000 volunteers from 136 lifeboat stations now feature in the portraits we’ve made together. Those early sparks have become a roaring furnace that’s lighting up the coastline far more strongly than I ever dreamed possible. Next week, I’m heading to Northern Ireland for the final mission of 2019. By the end, I’ll have completed 62% of the project and the number of lifeboat stations remaining will be in double-figures for the first time — just 90 to go when I resume my travels in 2020! If you enjoy following the journey and would like to contribute to its future, head for the blue button on my homepage where you can find all the ways to pledge your support. Pictured: One of those early sparks when Allen Frary, Wells-next-the-Sea Coxswain, posed with his freshly-made portrait on glass. A moment from the very first mission back in January 2015 and an image that the mighty @instagram used to illustrate a post about the project. Allen and I never dreamed we’d see over 405,000 Likes to his name! #lifeboatstationproject #lsp1 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #norfolk #wellsnextthesea #blastfromthepast
