There are bridges and there are bridges: I’ve been working in a really special spot today. The Forth Bridge (a @unesco World Heritage Site) dominates the skyline right beside @rnliqueensferry and this iconic feat of engineering was crying out to be my first glass plate of the day. I haven’t been able to take my eyes off the bridge since arriving yesterday...and now I can’t take my eyes off this gorgeous new plate! True to form, you can see every brick and bolt. If you’d like a print, it won’t be on the site till next month, but you can head to my Limited Edition Prints page and choose the ‘Reserve a Print’ option. Number 3/50 has already been reserved today but the rest are available. Swipe to see the crew photograph we made a couple of hours later, the bridge forming a unique backdrop to the Queensferry lifeboat volunteers. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp18 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #scotland #queensferry #forthbridge #unesco #unescoworldheritage #unescointheuk

This is one of those “Where do I start?” moments. It’s been a great mission so far with @rnli_anstruther at the start of the week and @rnli_kinghorn since Thursday. And, yet again, it’s almost impossible to convey how much has happened over the last few days. We’ve made great plates together and last night I looked on as the crew I’ve been photographing responded *twice* to emergency calls from the Coastguard. In between all this, I couldn’t resist jumping in my kayak to paddle to Inchkeith, the island in the middle of the Firth of Forth pictured in the first photograph here. It doesn’t look far, does it? But it’s around 2.2 nautical miles and took me just under an hour in each direction to make the journey, navigating tidal currents and shipping. It was the first time I really tested the cedar Greenland paddle made for me by a friend. Swipe a bit and you’ll see all the oiling I’ve been doing worked a treat! Anyway, a busy busy time. I’ll post more later but have a swipe through these highlights where you’ll also see that one of the last tasks today is to prepare another ten sheets of glass ready for @rnliqueensferry tomorrow. As ever, I can’t wait! Special thanks to Leanne and Stewart for looking after me so brilliantly over the last few days — the first picture shows the amazing view from their house! #lifeboatstationproject #lsp18 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #scotland #firthofforth #inchkeith #kinghorn

Hot off the press: This is the newest plate on the project, made just a few moments ago. It’s a beauty, IIDSSM, depicting the view from @rnli_anstruther. So busy and detailed for such a gentle scene: the ‘Lifeboat Launching’ sign; the St. Ayles skiffs (this is where they’re from); the slipway; the floodlights; the guard rails; the lighthouse...the list goes on. And true to form, the obligatory seagull is perched on a lamppost over on the breakwater. The process is working beautifully too. I’m incredibly grateful for that — it’s always a thrill to make an immaculate handmade photograph on glass. Anyway, time to pack up now and move on to @rnli_kinghorn ready for tomorrow. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp18 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #scotland #anstruther

On 10th June 2018, I was in Buckie. Hard to believe that was 30 lifeboat stations ago! Exactly a year later, I’m back on the east Scottish coast in @rnli_anstruther (called ‘Ainster’ locally) at the start of Mission 18 and ready for my 131st station tomorrow. Well, I’m almost ready — after the four hour drive north from Newcastle, just the small matter of polishing ten sheets of glass, which usually takes an hour or so. I’d better get on it! If you’d like to see all six dates and locations for the next fortnight, head to the Mission Map via my profile. The story of the brave, selfless @rnli lifeboat volunteers is told in many ways. Books, magazines, social media and me are just a few. In recent years, there’s also a BBC television programme that you may have seen called ‘Saving Lives At Sea’, a fly-on-the-wall documentary combining onboard footage with moving interviews. I love meeting many of the extraordinary people who’ve been featured and, of course, they often appear in my own photographs. During my visit to Conwy on the North Welsh coast in April, I had my first opportunity to make a specific ‘Saving Lives at Sea’ portrait of Jasmin, Greg and Alan. You might remember Greg and Alan recounting the story of a rescue in the river outside the station. Jasmin, Greg’s daughter, also brilliantly told viewers what it was like to have a Dad who volunteers on the lifeboat. Powerful stuff. And don’t they all look great together outside the station? #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #portrait #wales #conwy #rnlifamily #savinglivesatsea

035/050: In my last post, I mentioned the prints I donate to the stations I visit. That’s usually print No.1 of the Coxswain/Helms and the crew but last month we agreed on a different number for one particular station to mark a special occasion — 035 in honour of Annie Blaker’s retirement from @rnli_wicklow. Swipe to see her hull number on the print of the crew with their treasured Tyne class, one of the full set I’ve donated to the station as they move into their new chapter of saving lives at sea. Landing this week: This is what my print table looked like on Tuesday after making all the prints that are now winging their way to @howthrnli, @skerriesrnli, @rnli_wicklow and other folks across the UK! The rhythm of the project has become very distinctive. In broad terms, it moves between coastal life and studio life — several weeks away from home making new photographs, then a similar amount of studio time making the print orders, which have been the mainstay of the project’s funding since Day 1. The process of printing, signing and packaging is very detailed. It takes a long time but I find it SO rewarding to see them all wrapped up, ready to carry a new wave of enjoyment to their recipients. They’re not all sales, though. 14 of the prints pictured in this pile are donations to the lifeboat stations as my ‘thank you’ to them. After all, without their help, I couldn’t have made the photographs at all! Vintage or contemporary? Here’s something you may like to ponder over your holiday weekend: At very first glance, my photographs look like they were made a long time ago, don’t they? After all, I’m using a process invented by the Victorians. But after a second or two, people come to realise that they must have been made recently. Why? Because they start spotting the visual clues: modern equipment, clothing, buildings and even the excellent fact that many lifeboats are crewed by women, which certainly wasn’t the case back in the 1800s. When describing my photographs, some mistakenly call them “vintage”. This happens a lot in the press, for example, with headlines like “Vintage photographs of lifeboat crew snapped with Victorian camera”. It’s easily done, of course, and it’s not the easiest experience to try and describe to a new audience. However, my photographs aren’t vintage at all — in the moments they appear on glass, one of the really overwhelming sensations for whoever’s witnessing the magical process is that the pictures are utterly brand new. They look old but they’re not! Very confusing for the poor old brain box. This is something that people seem to enjoy trying to get their heads round. When I discuss it on my journey, I often mention that we wouldn’t say to a painter, “That’s a beautiful ‘vintage’ painting you’ve just made!” Ditto drawing, pottery or sculpting — all processes that have been around longer than photography. Anyway, there’s a great word that describes what’s going on here: the strange sensation of something appearing to be from an older period than it actually is, and that word is “anachronistic”. So, even though the process dates from 1851, my photographs are among the most contemporary on the planet! Food for thought? This time last week, Paul Boissier retired from his role as @rnli’s Chief Executive. Paul and I spent an enjoyable afternoon together back in September 2015 making his portrait at the All-Weather Lifeboat Centre. Nearly four years later, perhaps you can imagine my sense of pride when the RNLI’s Executive Team chose to purchase a limited edition print of my @dungenessrnli crew portrait as their retirement gift to him (swipe for a reminder). I numbered the print 10/50, a nod to Paul’s decade at the charity. Then came the icing on the cake when I saw that the Respect the Water Team also gifted my portrait of Evan Chrisp to Paul (swipe once more)...I hope he’s got enough room for it all! From Howth to Rhyl: Here you see my very first ‘Mission Grid’. I’m always trying to think of new ways to show you my journey, to keep it interesting and convey just how big it is. Also, to illustrate why I call my trips ‘missions’ rather than simply ‘trips’. I hope you generally get a sense of that but this is perhaps the simplest way that I’ve thought of so far — to put all the new photographs into one grid in the order that I visited the stations, from Howth in Ireland to Rhyl in Wales. So, here you have it. After four weeks or so in front of computers, 54 glass plate photographs from 11 lifeboat stations and nearly 5 weeks working on the coast in March and April. Some might say this is a body of work in itself but, remember, this is less than 10% of the project so far and it’s one more photograph than my entire exhibition at Poole Museum…and this doesn’t include all the private commissions I made along the way to help fund the journey! The grid might also go some way to illustrate why there’s very little downtime when I return home. It takes about as long as the mission itself to scan the glass plates and publish them on the website (only once I’ve built the new web pages to host them, of course). I could go on! Suffice to say, I’m feeling pretty chuffed to be up-to-date this evening. Tomorrow’s a new day, when it’ll be time to crack on with the print orders. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #hellyhansen #ireland #wales #anglesey #portrait #withcouragenothingisimpossible #savinglivesatsea #missiongrid

Recce recce: So, where did we get to? Ah, yes, @holyhead_lifeboat. Coxswain Tony Price (see portrait in the previous post) was so generous and full of spirit for my project. He even came up with the fantastic idea of making the crew photograph at the end of the 1.7 mile long breakwater. With the plan hatched, a recce would be vital to make sure I could get Neena to the lighthouse. Several of us bundled into the Land Rover and off we went. I remember feeling particularly honoured as some of the crew had taken time off work to make sure they could be around for the whole day. There was a great feeling of embarking on a mini adventure. We all had smiles on our faces and were in it together...what fun! You may have caught some of the photographs from this occasion in my Story? If not, I’ve now made them into a Holyhead Highlight on my profile. Turn the sound up and you’ll hear that Tony is encyclopaedic when it comes to local history. One mechanic, two very different portraits: The ritual of making a glass plate photograph can often ‘formalise’ the finished image. Now that I’m more confident with the ritual, it’s going to be fun trying fresh approaches when the opportunities arise, things I’d never have attempted four years ago at the beginning of the project. This portrait of Colley is my first attempt at working ‘beyond’ the formality of wet plate to make an image that has the feel of a grabbed moment, a snapshot on 12x10 inch glass! My thanks to Colley for helping me with this...it was good fun thinking about the logistics and then executing the plan. Swipe to see the second portrait we made with my usual more honed approach — Colley sitting beside the old stone boathouse. I’m pleased to report that the photographs I made in March with the fine folk of @skerriesrnli on the east coast of Ireland are now on the website in the usual places — the Galleries, Mission Map and Limited Edition Print pages. Pictured: Conor, Philip, Frosty and Rob, the volunteer helmsmen of Skerries @rnli lifeboat, 23rd March 2019, 12x10 inch Clear Glass Ambrotype. Coming up: Remember the wee clip of @rnli_wicklow mechanic Brendan Copeland listening to the recording of the Tyne class lifeboat he’d looked after for 30 years? Well, he’s a very humble chap, initially shying away from having his portrait made. I’m glad we were able to win him round to make the 12x10 inch glass plate you see pictured here. Another beautiful moment in history and one of the photographs soon to be published on the website along with the rest of work I made in Ireland. As an aside, you’ll see Brendan’s wearing the new @hellyhansen all weather kit. This was the first mission where HH was the norm and Musto the rarity. The project has become a record of so much transition within the RNLI at so many levels, something I didn’t anticipate at the beginning. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #portrait #hellyhansen #ireland #wicklow #annieblaker #tyneclass

What fun! Thank you for all your kind messages following my first piece of telly presenting on @bbctheoneshow. I found it so surreal hearing @rylan introduce the piece with @antmiddleton (swipe). Another unpredictable stamp on the timeline of my project! More screenshots in my story, all with swipe-up-able links if you’d like to catch up on the iPlayer from the 11m30s mark. #theoneshow #bbc #dadsarmy #arthurlowe #captainmainwaring #rylan #antmiddleton #lifeboatstationproject #rnli

Set your telly recorders! The short film we made for @bbctheoneshow in Ramsgate last month will be shown during tomorrow night's broadcast from 7pm. It’s a piece about my Grandad with a little bit about the project and @rnli in the mix — one of the people (probably 😌) responsible for my existence features too! So, that’s: Friday 3rd May 7pm BBC1 I’ve popped a link to the episode on my ‘Media Highlights’ page (via profile link) in case you’d like to catchup with it on the iPlayer. By strange happenstance, mind over muscle man @antmiddleton will be one of the studio guests. The connection’s been made that Ant came along to our exhibition preview in January, so I'm hoping they might speak to him briefly about the images when they link to the film. Let's see...fingers crossed! #lifeboatstationproject #rnli #antmiddleton #bbc #theoneshow

Whoop whoop! There’s so much to do at every stage of this big ol’ project but...YES!...I’ve now prepared the first set of scans from Mission 17 and finished building the new web pages to host them. First up? My visit to @howthrnli from 19th to 21st March featuring these fine folk. A moment in maritime history: ‪Annie Blaker finished 30 years’ service with @rnli_wicklow today. I’m incredibly grateful for last month’s opportunity to immortalise the last of the Tyne class lifeboats on glass, helping Annie to be enjoyed and remembered for generations to come. The photographs from my visit to Wicklow will be added to the web galleries over the next few days, following Howth and Skerries. The power of sound at the end of an era: It's an emotional weekend coming up for @rnli_wicklow. Before leaving the station exactly one month ago, I edited the sound recording of Annie Blaker that I'd made the previous day. After 30 years' service, she's the last operational Tyne class on the network. I wanted the recording to be a parting gift for the man I knew would love it the most — Brendan Copeland, the Station Mechanic who’s looked after 'Annie Blaker' for all that time. I handed Brendan the headphones. Watching him listen to the recording was a joy. Furthermore, it’s the first time the station are aware of her legendary Detroit engines being recorded like this. After an emotional listen, Brendan said: “Beautiful isn’t it? How would you get better than that? The little growl on her. Lovely.” I couldn’t have wished for a better compliment. One day, my sound recordings will be part of the completed project. While I’m thinking about the best ways to incorporate them into the book and final exhibition, I publish previews of the work in progress to my patrons who, in turn, are helping to fund the project, enabling me to reach that final lifeboat station in a few years' time. You can become a patron too and hear my podcasts for the price of a monthly cuppa, including the very same recording that Brendan heard. Find all the links you need (including three free episodes) on the revamped Podcasts page via my profile link. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #maritime #nautical #heritage #tyneclass #ireland #wicklow #endofanera

Glass time capsules: The rhythm of the project is taking its course and scanning of the latest plates is now in full flow. Looking at the @howthrnli ambrotypes for the first time since making them on 19th March has brought the memories of my visit flooding back. A few years ago, I described ambrotypes as ‘glass time capsules’, a phrase I haven’t used for a while but it’s a notion that’s hit me again today. The plates are so rich and crisp that I feel transported right back to the time I spent with the excellent people you see pictured here. I can hear their voices, the banter, the laughter. I can even feel what the weather was like, including that gorgeous fresh evening air on the east coast of Ireland. Just one of the reasons why wet plate collodion is so special to use — it’s the process that keeps on giving! #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #portrait #howth #ireland #timecapsule

During my drive home from Rhyl and over the last couple of days, I’ve been reflecting on the wonders of my recent mission, coming to terms with the ever stronger effect my project seems to be having on the people I meet along the way. It’s reached a point where lifeboat volunteers are often so moved and engaged by the new history we’re making together that I’ve been determinedly asked on several occasions, “How can we help you to keep going?” I’m always astounded by that as the crews have already given me so much. But my answer to them is the same as it is to you: This project is my brainchild and nobody has commissioned me. It’s funded by my followers and supporters in all kinds of ways, people like you. Like the lifeboat volunteers, you can help me spread the word by sending people to my website (profile link) to find out all about the project and how to support it. But remember that retweets, likes and shares don’t fund my work on their own. I need as many people as possible to take the extra step of buying a print, some merchandise or becoming a patron. The latter is much cheaper than many people realise. You can pledge as little as one pound per month. For three pounds per month, you can access a raft of podcasts and videos in my patron-only posts...and you’ll have your name printed in the final book! In a topsy turvy world, that’s how you’ll be able to keep enjoying this unique good news story I’m making with the incredible lifeboat volunteers, the people who save lives at sea in all weathers and at all times of day. As always, thank you for reading, following and for all your support over the last few weeks. More soon! What a fun day we had with the talented @lordlowe photographing our crew on an amazing 150+ year old dame of a camera...I guarded it well !! Well, that’s it. Suddenly the sun is setting on Mission 17. After nearly five weeks, eleven stations, two countries and a splendid final day with @rnlirhyl, it’s nearly time to head home to Kath, my boys and the rest of my loved ones. This trip somehow feels particularly epic. To refresh your memories, it started with the @rnli_doverlifeboat supper followed by The One Show filming in Ramsgate (still waiting on the transmission date, by the way). The first station I photographed was @howthrnli on the east coast of Ireland after making that gruelling drive through the night to reach Holyhead in time for the ferry. If you have a spare moment, you might like to scroll back through my feed as I’ve just done. You’ll see special times with special folk making our very own good news story together in these tempestuous times. There’s so much to reflect upon and savour. I feel privileged to have met so many incredible people and to have made wonderful new friends — I’ll enjoy thinking about you all as I make the 200 mile journey back to Newcastle tomorrow. Thank you to everybody who’s helped along the way from the lifeboat volunteers to those that have spread the word, put me up...and put up with me! Such an incredible boathouse here in @rnli_llandudno. One of the most modern on the network, it houses a D Class inshore lifeboat (ILB) and a state-of-the-art Shannon Class all weather lifeboat (ALB). It also successfully encapsulates the feeling of the station’s history and heritage — for example, you can see the original service boards from the old station hanging on the wall. Alun Pari Huws (one of the DLAs here) has gone to extraordinary lengths to make sure the visitor experience is engaging too. He’s really succeeded in his mission, ensuring the station is permanently shipshape too! Llandudno really is worth a visit if you get the chance. The icing on the cake for this particular visit is that The Lifeboat Enthusiasts’ Society AGM is being held here this afternoon. I’m looking forward to it, my very first one since becoming a member last year! 🤓 #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #sar #lifeboat #maritime #nautical #heritage #rnliheritage #rnlishannon #rnlidclass #wales #architecture #llandudno

It’s been quite a trip so far! Huge thanks to the lifeboat volunteers of Conwy for helping me to make more special plates yesterday, culminating in this crew portrait complete with the station’s D Class lifeboat. As you can see, Conwy Castle provides a stunning backdrop. After nearly four weeks on the road, it’s time to prepare the glass for @rnli_llandudno, the penultimate station of Mission 17. Llandudno is a gorgeous spot just around the coast from Conwy where the crew have an epic new boathouse and state-of-the-art Shannon Class lifeboat. So much to show, so much to tell: It’s been non-stop since Thursday’s post from Holyhead, a time during which I’ve photographed two more magnificent lifeboat stations in quick succession...and in completely contrasting weather! It all started in gale force easterly winds at Moelfre on Friday (swipe to see the stunning exterior too), moving into bright blue skies with @beaumaris_rnli yesterday. By the way, thank you for all your messages during the slight ‘radio silence’. I’m absolutely fine...it’s simply been a very intense time pouring lots of collodion...😌...and I’ve reached the classic ‘8 station’ mark on the mission, traditionally a time to take stock and recharge for the final week.
