In closing out #blackhistorymonth we’d like to celebrate our an ancestor, Lucille Bogan, a dirty blues singer and songwriter. Popular in the 1920-30s, Bogan was the first woman to record Black Blues outside of Chicago or New York. Bogan’s lyrics were outspoken, explicit and unapologetic. Covering the topics of nightlife drams, advocating for sex work and overall sexual freedom for woman. So, basically, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Trina, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B and other greats can go ‘head and bow down. 🙌🏾 #oakhella #oakland #blackblues #music #blackartists #lucillebogan

Hung out with these girls for the first time in WAY too long! We decided to pay tribute to Lucille Bogan and her song from 1935 “shave ‘em dry” in belated honour of @hayhook ‘s birthday! What do you do when you spend time with friends? 😂

Before you toast to Cardi B and Lil' Kim make sure you pay homage to Lucille Bogan because she did that first! My fellow Aries Sis, Lucille Bogan, born Lucille Anderson in Mississippi April 2, 1897 and raised in Alabama. She was famous for 'dirty blues' with many of her songs referencing promiscuity and prostitution. Here's the lyrics to her 1935 hit, "Shave 'em Dry" I got n*pples on my t*tties, big as the end of my thumb I got somethin' between my legs'll make a dead man come Oh daddy, baby won't you shave 'em dry? Now, draw it out! Want you to grind me baby, grind me until I cry Say I f*cked all night, and all the night before baby And I feel just like I wanna, f*ck some more Oh great God daddy #blackhistorymonth #day11 #lucillebogan #dirtyblues #jazz #blackwomen #trapmusic #og #blackgirlmagic✨ #blackwomen #sexworkers

“If these walls could talk, I bet they’d sing a song!” – Joshua Hedley These 99-year-old walls have quite a song to sing. The sounds recorded inside them in June 1923 were the South’s first songs heard ’round the world! Black and white jazz, blues, gospel, and country musicians got in the groove and indelibly carved their songs for posterity. #musichistory #recordedinatlanta #okehrecords #jazz #blues #gospel #country #countrymusic #music #lucillebogan #fanniegoosby #eddieheywood #morehousecollege #quartet #warnerssevensaces #fulchersnoveltyorchestra #fiddlinjohncarson #lovesong #heartbomb #thisplacematters #saveatl #save152nassau

Women artists dominated the first wave of blues recordings from the 1920s onward. Alongside the likes of Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey were singers such as Lucille Bogan, pictured here, who specialised in raunchy lyrics. So explicit were her songs that a version of one of her most famous 'shave' em dry', was not released until the mid-80s, fifty years after it was first recorded. #blues #bluesmusic #bessiesmith #marainey #lucillebogan #music #musicians #musicblog #musicblogger #recordcollector #nowplaying #nowspinning #recordcollection #cdcollection #cdcollector #vinyl #cratedigging #vinylcollection #vinyllife #instamusic #musicreview #musiclover #pilgrimspicks

Lucille Bogan (April 1, 1897 – August 10, 1948) was an American singer-songwriter, among the first to be recorded. She also recorded under the pseudonym Bessie Jackson. The music critic Ernest Bornemanstated that Bogan was one of "the big three of the blues", along with Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith. Many of Bogan's songs have been covered by later blues and jazz musicians, including Buddy Guy, B. B. King, and Sonny Boy Williamson. #lucillebogan #blackgirlmagic #blackqueen #supportblackwomen #drkingsilky #already #liveinthecastlewithkingsilky

Sonny Terry – Blind Sonny Terry (Archive of Folk Music), 1965, bought 5/5/66 Various – Screening the Blues, Aspects of the Blues Tradition (CBS), 1968, bought 3/12/70 The Sonny Terry is kind of a boring, although interesting, display of early harmonica blues. Screening the Blues is all about displaying different types of early blues. Especially when it comes to topics, and in this ambition, it features a couple of ‘near-pornographic’ songs. Let’s just say some of these use quite innocent euphemisms – like ‘Phonograph Blues’ by Robert Johnson - and some - like the alternate take of ‘Shave ’Em Dry’ with Lucille Bogan - don’t… #sonnyterry #blindsonnyterry #archiveoffolkmusic #screeningtheblues #cbs #robertjohnson #phonographblues #lucillebogan #shaveemdry #blues #vinyl #recordcollector

Remembering Lucille Bogan! #blackpeopleyoushouldknow Aka #bessiejackson While many of the Classic Blues singers of the 1920s tackled risqué and controversial issues in their songs, #lucillebogan almost exclusively focused on explicit sexual themes, like prostitution, adultery and lesbianism, and social ills such as alcoholism, drug addiction and abusive relationships. She was born in Mississippi but grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1923 she made her first recordings in Atlanta, Georgia. The records apparently didn't sell well because she didn't record again until 1927 for the Paramount and Brunswick labels after moving to Chicago. Between 1933 and 1935 she performed and recorded under the pseudonym Bessie Jackson and worked with pianist Walter Roland. Bogan's recording career came to an end in 1935 and she eventually returned to Birmingham where she reverted to her real name and performed in and managed the group Bogan's Birmingham Bustersbut did not appear on either of the group's records. In the late 1930s or early l940s, Bogan moved to the West Coast. She died in Los Angeles in 1948 of coronary sclerosis. #blackhistoryofapril #weloveblackmusicians #weloveblackentertainers #dayinblackhistory #todayinblackhistory #thisweekinblackhistory

Fantasy interview #1: Lucille Bogan aka. Bessie Jackson was one of the “big three” blues musicians and one of the first women to be recorded. She also recorded one of the most sexually explicit songs of all time, “Shave em Dry,” and was widely regarded as a “dirty musician.” She wrote from the point of view of a “bull dyke” in B.D. Woman’s Blues” and was one of the first women, along with Ma Rainey, to sing about queerness/ lesbian desire. “Comin' a time, B. D. Women ain't gonna need no men Comin' a time, B. D. Women ain't gonna do need no men Oh they way treat us is a lowdown and dirty sin B. D. Women, you sure can't understand B. D. It’s day 10: Sunday blues. Lucille Bogan & Walter Roland - Alabama Blues (1968). Lucille Bogan was truly ahead of her time. She was not only one of the first female blues singers to be recorded, but also she had no limits. In the 20s and 30s, she explicitly, very explicitly, sang about sex, drinking and prostitution. I can’t even imagine the atmosphere in the juke joints where she performed. Many of her songs were covered by blues greatest such B.B King. Sloppy Drunk Blues is perhaps Bogan’s most famous song: “I love my moonshine whiskey. Better than I do my man”. Lucille Bogan ❤️ Let me introduce Lucille with lyrics from her song Shave 'Em Dry: - "I got nipples on my titties Big as the end of my thumb I got somethin between my legs That'll make a dead-man come" - She was born in Mississippi, 1897, and it has been said that she was one of the first American blues musicians to be recorded. Most of her songs from the 1930s contain the most loveliest, filthiest blues songs I have ever heard. I strongly urge you to listen to Shave 'Em Dry on th music search engine of your choice. 👌👌👌 - P.S If you know of any artists/songs in the same vein, I would love to hear about it.
