More SA non-fiction! 🇿🇦 ⠀ .⠀ Karoline was the daughter of an interacial couple during apartheid, when oppressive laws made this illegal. So her white mother did the unthinkable: she took Karoline to England, gave her up for adoption, and told everyone back in South Africa that baby Karoline had died. Re-named Sarah Jane by her adoptive parents, she struggled to fit in to white British society. Her journey is incredible and heartbreaking, but ultimately inspiring.⠀ .⠀ I was super lucky to see @thisissjking at the Franschhoek Literary Festival earlier this year. She appeared on some incredible panels and spoke really beautifully about her story and about the state of adoption and race, both in England and in the UK. As the aunty of an adoptee, it was eye-opening. I am challenged and encouraged by her story: one worth telling and one worth reading.⠀ .⠀ #killingkaroline #adoption #southafricanlit #nonfiction #memoir⠀ .⠀ #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookish #readingtime #ilovebooks #instabooks #booksofinstagram

One of my goals this year was to diversify my reading genres, and this is a book I definitely wouldn't have picked up otherwise (thanks for sending it my way @touchstonebooks), but I'm glad I did! It's filled with fun drawings and insight into relationships, of all types! What genres are outside of your comfort zone?

Good morning #bookstagram! • I decided it’s time for a change. I am *gulp* giving away books I’ve already read. 😬😬😬 • If you know me, I am a huge fan of books, as well as shelves filled with said books. I lived with that aesthetic all my life, and absolutely love it! But now I’m slowly realizing that these books aren’t being appreciated for their worth. They need to be read and loved, not collecting dust on a book shelf. So this little gem I am very much looking forward to giving to my dear friend @hannahmaezie! • ‘Wildflower’ by @drewbarrymore is my first nonfiction book I have encountered that is more categorized as a collection of short stories. I think that’s why I was a little hesitant at first while reading it, I wasn’t used to the formatting. But learning about her childhood, her parents, her personal troubles as well as how she got the iconic role in ET and others, it made me feel much more connected to her than I expected. I was always drawn to her, never realizing why. It’s her light. It’s her kindness. It’s her inner beauty. She sees the world in a way I somewhat envy from time to time. • I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a change of pace in their reading. This definitely was a little out of my comfort zone structure wise, but I’m so glad I dived into this! • #memoir #drewbarrymore #wildflower #nonfiction #shortstories #quickread #autobiography #bookworm #bookish #bibliophile #ilovebooks #blue #white #shelfie #bookoftheday #read #reading

"I would have to learn to live in a different way, seeing death as an imposing itinerant visitor but knowing that even if I'm dying, until I actually die, I am still living." - Paul Kalanithi, When Breath Becomes Air When Breath Becomes Air is an autobiography written by Paul Kalanithi. He talks about his story of growing up, studying literature to becoming a neurosurgeon. Even after being diagnosed with illness he continued practicing neurosurgery and wrote this book while getting treated for stage IV lung cancer. Ok, how did I not think it through before picking up this book that it's gonna rip me up emotionally. I mean it's a memoir of a man dying from cancer. Ever since the demise of my dad, death has been a topic that's pretty hard to talk or read about for me. It brings back the hard times me and my family went through during those days. Those emotions and heartbreaks and slowly sinking into depression. The hardest part being seeing my mom being so disturbed and not being able to help her even though I tried my best. But the thing I learned through all of this is to not give up and always try to live your best and the fullest. And this book too makes you realize it. The author doesn't really give you false hopes but teaches you to accept the truth as it is, rather than denying it. It teaches you to live life in the moment and appreciate the smallest joys to the fullest. But the book also made me realize that all though death is a sad, terrible, terrifying concept, it is the only true concept of our lives, the only certain concept. This book is definitely incomplete but isn't that how life is. Our life stories are never truly complete, there's always more to live, always more to see but it could end any moment leaving people with unanswered questions for infinity. The epilogue written by Paul's wife, Lucy Kalanithi is heartbreaking. She takes the story forward and tells us what happens later in Paul's life and why he had stopped writing. Truly the world lost an amazing human being, a writer and a doctor. This book is definitely worth reading to know his life journey and also just because of the writing style. . Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟

🇬🇧 #atokyoromance by #ianburuma was a birthday gift from one of my besties. Isn’t it wonderful when your friends know you so well? ☺️ This book will also be part of my #japaneseliterature project cause i want to read everything related to Japan. So what is better than a memoir from the editor of The New York Review of Books? On the cover it says: “A Tokyo Romance is a portrait of a young artist and the fantastical city that shaped him, and a timeless story about the desire to transgress boundaries: cultural, artistic and sexual.” This is going to be a wild ride! 🎢♥️ . . Siz neler okuyorsunuz? Heyecanlandığınız kitaplar var mı raflarınızda? ☺️ . . . . . #memoir #bookstagram #nonfiction #books #book #author #memories #literature #inspiration #authors #bookish #booknerd #newbook #booklover #bookworm #tokyo #japan #aboutjapan #okumahalleri #kitap #japonya #anıkitabı #atlanticbooks

Revolutionary leader, feminist and writer #kondapallikoteswaramma passed away on September 19 at her granddaughter’s house in Vizag. She was 100 years old. We at Zubaan feel honoured to have published the English translation of her #memoir (originally in Telugu), ‘The Sharp Knife of Memory’, which Koteswaramma wrote at the age of 93. Although at first she was known as the widow of Kondapalli Seetharamaiah, one of the primary leaders of the #maoistmovement in Andhra Pradesh, later in her life Koteswaramma came to be recognised as the rebel woman who gave her life to the Communist cause. An indomitable spirit who spent four years underground in the difficult years of the late 1940s, Koteswaramma was not broken even after the man she married deserted her for another woman. Instead, she rebuilt her life by educating herself and did not give up even after she lost both her children and then her mother in a short span of time. As a fellow HRF activist Rohith said rightly said on her passing, there is nothing Koteswaramma had not faced, be it “patriarchy, feudalism, capitalism, revolutionary movements, [the] dissolution of such movements...’ But more importantly she survived it all, leaving behind a legacy of grit, perseverance and sacrifice. While writing her autobiography Koteswaramma had wondered, “Am I the only one left now as everyone who walked with me has gone away?” So she picked the title ‘Nirjana Vaaradhi’, which can be translated as ‘A Bridge Abandoned.’ She was unaware, then, that the bridge would find a new lease of life in the hands of her readers, to be crossed again and again for long after she is gone. #womenleaders, #indianwomen, #indianwomeninhistory, #indiancommunistmovements, #communistmovements, #maoistmovements #rebelwomen

In this intimate, haunting literary #memoir, an American icon tells her story for the first time, and in her own gorgeous words--about a challenging and lonely #childhood, the craft that helped her find her voice, and a powerful emotional legacy that shaped her journey as a #daughter and a #mother. One of the most celebrated, beloved, and enduring #actors of our time, Sally Field has an infectious charm that has captivated the nation for more than five decades, beginning with her first #tv role at the age of seventeen. From #gidget's sweet-faced "girl next door" to the dazzling complexity of #sybil to the Academy Award-worthy ferocity and depth of Norma Rae and Mary Todd Lincoln, Field has stunned audiences time and time again with her artistic range and emotional acuity. Yet there is one character who always remained hidden: the shy and anxious little girl within. With raw honesty and the fresh, pitch-perfect prose of a natural-born writer, and with all the humility and authenticity her fans have come to expect, Field brings readers behind-the-scenes for not only the highs and lows of her star-studded early career in #hollywood, but deep into the truth of her lifelong relationships--including her complicated love for her own mother. Powerful and unforgettable, In Pieces is an inspiring and important account of life as a woman in the second half of the twentieth century.

📚”My life, because of so many things, was in a crisis; I don’t want to go into those details: divorce, father dying, professional problems, problems with this, problems with that, everything was bad. I thought if I were to be weak I would have a depression. But every day I would wake up and have a cold shower and sit down and remember and write, always paying attention to the beauty of the book” I’ve been loving Pamuk this year and his unique melancholic view of his beloved native city. Every city has its own underpinning atmosphere and here Istanbul comes to a very strange but hugely compelling focus. Now reading. 📚Istanbul : Memories & The City. Translated by Maureen Freely. Azar Nafisi’s #memoir is about her courageous endeavor; as a teacher in Iran she gathered seven of her most committed female students to read ‘forbidden’ Western classics. While being raided by fundamentalists they continued to secretly indulge in Jane Austen, #fitzgerald, Henry James and of course #nabokov. This is an important tale about freedom and the importance of art and literature in the formation of one’s self and beliefs. #mustread #readinglolitaintehran #azarnafisi #iran #tehran #lolita #bookstagram #bookshelf #bookworm #nonfiction #igbooks #feminism #genderequality #bookcoverdesign #booksonthedancefloor

Today, I know that as a child I was not “strange” for talking to the stars, spending so much time with nature or feeling things I had no explanation for. It was not strange for me to grasp astrology at 10 years old. Back then I was called strange and tried to fit in because I couldn’t find anyone quite like me but today, my tribe was doing the same thing. LOL We don’t make anyone feel uncomfortable because of their differences, we embrace that shit!!!! And those “normal” people they now what to be “strange”. Want to read about my childhood? Check out my memoir Mind Traveling. You will not be disappointed. Find out why it’s been read in four countries and went international within 30 days. I want you can go through the unimaginable and still come out standing taller than you were. Purchase via link on bio, Walmart.com, Amazon.com, Apple iBooks and Barnes and Noble.com or you can DM me and I will ship an autographed copy. #stargazing #stars #tribe #strange #mindtraveling #iamkarmabanks #memoir #thestruggle #miraclesdohappen #ibelieveinmiracles #indigo #indigochild #childtrauma #healing #international #humblebeginnings #divine #nothinglikenormal #shift #purpose #book #pickupabook #bookreviews #kindle #walmart #amazon #bestseller #vibe
