The beginning to all our lives! I got to witness the magic and pain of labor and delivery, and let me tell you, it was breathtaking. Not only on an emotional level, (because it was my nieces birth) but because this is a reminder of where we all stem. Itโ€™s no wonder why they call the placenta the tree of life. Seeing my niece come into this world has changed my life in more ways than I can say. ๐ŸŒฟโ€‹ โ€‹โ€‹ โ€‹ โ€‹ *My sister in law graciously allowed me to post* โ€‹โ€‹ โ€‹ #placenta #treeoflife #birth #life #umbilicalcord #medicine #prepa #futurepa #saraswaytopa #livebirth #miracleoflife #obgyn #midwife #magicoflife #medicalstudent #medicalassistant #medical #birthday

Only a few weeks old & already has life figured out ๐Ÿ˜˜ Part IV: Letโ€™s have a baby! I was right! Breaking my water made contractions more productive & I felt like we were having more progress. I was laboring in bed & I was told I needed to decide where I wanted to be when we welcomed Reign into the world because the job was almost over! The pool felt amazing, so I asked if we could be there. My team was more than willing to get it ready for me, but reality was that we probably already have a baby before we got the water warm enough. (Yay! Motivation!) I chose the next best thing. The shower. My team turned on the water, helped me in, & left me alone to keep working on this baby. My midwife continued to listen in on him periodically to make sure he was tolerating labor well, & he was doing just fine! Once I was able to touch the very top of his head, my mindset changed. I was calm, focused, & determined to meet my boy soon. I felt totally in control. He was right there & I was sooo close. I told my best friend to tell my midwife to come back in because he was coming. I kept breathing him down & working with my body. Before I knew it, his head was delivered! I expected his body to follow shortly after with the next push or two. My midwife was right behind me ready to help me receive our baby. But, his body did not come with the next push. Or with the second, or the third...I kept pushing, but no luck. We had a situation. We had a #shoulderdystocia & I needed to get out of the shower... Birth Story Part V: (Final) Well, there I was...squatting in the shower with my babyโ€™s head fully delivered. He was stuck. Shoulder to pelvis. Bone on bone. I knew I needed to give these next few pushes everything I had. At that point, it wasnโ€™t enough. My midwife said in a calm, serious tone, โ€œAlright, sweetie. Letโ€™s get out.โ€ My first response is, โ€œOk, what do I do?โ€ They helped me step over the shower tub & instructed me to get on all fours, so thatโ€™s what I did. We had a #nuchalcord that I think they said was wrapped 2x. In this position, my midwife freed the cord. A couple of more pushes...still no baby. In the next attempt, we tried a โ€œrunning manโ€ position. Alternating knees back & forth. Pushing. Still no baby. So now I started to feel discouraged & anxious. Shoulder dystocia is unpreventable & canโ€™t be foreseen. It just has to be managed. Thank God for trained professionals. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ The next instruction was to roll onto my back. I did this quickly. I prayed he would finally be delivered. With persistence & skill, my midwife pulled my baby out & placed him on my chest. After 24 hrs of labor, he was finally in my arms! After such a rough entry into the world, he needed a little stimulation & encouragement. He had a healthy cord & #placenta that allowed him to still transition well into extrauterine life. We had a healthy baby! I moved from the wet, cold bathroom floor to the bed. After the cord stopped pulsating, it was clamped & cut. With a little patience, he was able to latch & nurse for the first time. Life completely changed. What an empowering experience it all was. There we were. A new little #family! And the journey was truly just beginning โค๏ธ #homebirthstory #breastfeeding #naturalbirth #laboranddelivery #newborn #nursing #midwife #doula #motherhood #badassmotherbirther #empoweredbirth #birthwithoutfear

Part II: Am I really in labor? On Friday November 2nd at 39 wks + 1 day, I woke up to get ready for work. Without too much detail, I had been noticing some signs that told me #baby day was coming soon. I gave my #midwife an update. I decided to go on with my day & head to work since it could still be within a day to a week before #labor really began. I had a simple day at work. I walked the halls & climbed the stairs during any breaks like I usually did (hoping my cervix might begin to dilate & keep things moving along). After I got home from work, I showered, got comfortable, & laid in bed. It was 9:30pm. I fully anticipated a good nights sleep, thinking I would wake up the next morning & then things would start to pick up. Little did I know, I was already in early labor! So I was absolutely wrong about getting some rest! Although I tried, the sensations I felt were too strong to sleep through but I still didnโ€™t recognize that I was probably in labor. It wasnโ€™t until around 3 am Saturday morning that my thought process changed & I decided that I could be having a baby... these feelings may be #contractions...letโ€™s start counting. After counting what I was feeling, I realized that I was 5-1-1. These feelings were, in fact, contractions. They were 5 minutes apart, lasting at least 1 minute each, & this has been consistent for 1 hour. This 5-1-1 rule is used as a guideline for when your doctor normally tells you to head to your hospital or birthing facility, so I knew that this was it & my body wouldnโ€™t stop until I had a baby! It was 4am & I called my best friend. I told her today would likely be the day so that she could plan to travel to be with us! I waited another hour & called my midwife at 5am. I told her what my body was doing. She told me to eat some breakfast, drink a glass of water, keep counting, & call back in another hour to tell her how things were progressing. When I called back at 6am, I was able to tell her things were still moving consistently, so she decide to pack up & head my way! Next: Bring on the #birthteam!

Birth Story Part I: Choosing home birth It is such a joy for me to write this story b/c for months I dreamed of what my sonโ€™s birth would be. Now heโ€˜s here & it makes me so happy to relive this journey to #motherhood & finally be able to share it. :) I started planning our babyโ€™s birth day soon after I found out we were expecting & my heart was set on a home birth experience. As a #registerednurse, I totally value the world of modern #medicine. There is a time & place for medical intervention. We would have a lot less mamas & babies in this world without good antibiotics, a list of other meds, skilled surgeons, etc. With that being said, I personally believe that a healthy pregnancy does not have to be the medical event our culture has made it out to be. Thereโ€™s a lot of fear in the unknown of #childbirth & a lot of doubt in the power of being a woman. I do not doubt Godโ€™s amazing design. I made the decision to trust the process & His plan for my future as a mama. Then I started planning our #homebirth! During my 1st & 2nd #trimesters, I saw an #obgyn. I had what would be considered a low risk pregnancy. I switched to the care of a #midwife before the start of my 3rd trimester. She covered the rest of our #prenatal, L&D, and #postpartum care. The education + preparation she provided in just the 1st prenatal appt exceeded the total combined experiences I had at the OB/Gyn clinic. I knew instantly that I needed her to be a part of this story. Throughout #pregnancy, I was very proactive in preparing for this #baby. I went to the gym. I went on long walks. I took my vitamins & probiotics. Reign stayed in an occiput posterior position & this is usually less optimal in terms of babyโ€™s descent, cervical dilation, & #labor progression. In hopes that he would still be able to turn during labor, I tried some yoga/stretching & chiropractic care. I connected with other mamas in a #naturalchildbirth class. I read a lot. I listened to lots of other #birthstories on podcast. I knew that all of this โ€œprep workโ€ was optional, but it was SO beneficial to my physical, mental, & emotional foundation. So, why not?! You do you, mama! Next: Am I really in labor?
