I can’t even begin to express the profound respect and admiration I have for this woman. Stephan was spectacular tonight. You, a picture of grace and beaming pride. EXT. QUEEN STREET WEST -DAY * * Holding her camera, street photgrapher and filmmaker behind upcoming doc, Mothering in the Movement, sits on a bench she has borrowed from a nearby cafe and placed in front of a vibrant red restaurant facade. As she reflects on the passage of time and motherhood, her stillness contrasts powerfully with the energy of moving downtown traffic reflected in the widows behind her. * * When it comes to consuming media, I understand the importance of identifying voice, namely whose voices are being amplified and whose are being suppressed. * * Now, as the person holding the camera and sharing other women’s stories, no less, it is vital that I get really clear about why I’m making this film about mother-activists. That’s what this week’s ‘interiors’ (reflections on motherhood) and exteriors have been about. Getting clear about why I HAVE to be the one to make this particular film at this time...The clearer I am about that, the deeper the story will be served and its participants honoured. * * Thanks to director and DP, Rochelle Chambers for stepping in last minute and shooting me for our development trailer. To Ngardy Conteh George for her technical support and insightful conversations about being mom. To my producers Alison Duke and Lea Marin who continue to push, and prod, and mine the material (and me!) for the richest content. To Babes who has watched every iteration of this work so far, always willing to offer up honest critique. And finally to Sonia Godding Togobo, an editor with a true gift for using moving images and sound to rewrite us into our own stories with the brilliance and power we’ve always possessed. You were the true MVP this week! 🎥✊🏾❤️ #dothework #documentaryfilm #filmmaking #womeninfilm #blackwomeninfilm #filmmakingasapracticeofselfknowledge #motheringinthemovement #indevelopment #letsgetthismoney 😏

Safety first! Apparently even indoors at the production office 🤓⚠️ * * Truth be told, I absolutely LOVE that I can hop on my electric scooter and be at work by the 3rd song of my “Cruel Summer” playlist (Yeah Bananarama. Whatchu wanna say??) It’s such a welcomed change from my teacher life commute of 20km every morning by car. * * On top of all that, the production space @therealgoldelox and @gadstar have created is so inviting and conducive to well...production. When I first picked up a camera professionally (L’Oreal Fashion Week circa 2005), I never could have imagined that years later I’d be making my first feature documentary about a quartet of badass mamas. A quick scroll through their timelines and you’ll understand why we’re making this film. * * To @akiomaroon @dbiyounganitafrika @kimkatrinmilan @staceyannchin and the many other mamas, grandmamas, aunties & “othermothers” across the globe, we SEE you. We acknowledge your labour in public institutions, in political spaces, in the streets of your communities, and in your homes. We understand your urgency. We honour your fierce passion, your creativity, and your presence. Thank you for living from a place of vulnerability, strength and compassion ✊🏾❤️🙏🏾 #labouroflove 🎥@motheringinthemovement #documentaryfilm #blackwomeninfilm * * Repost @therealgoldelox ・・・ Director Laurie Townshed @humanfreq setting up to film @bodymadeforlove for documentary #motheringinthemovement #afrochic

Mothering in the Movement mom Akio Maroon sums up our film’s raison d’être in one beautiful post (below). Revolutionary love, indeed. ✊🏾❤️🙏🏾 #motheringinthemovement ・・・ Repost @akiomaroon Black.Girl.Joy My whole life I've been taught to fight for freedom, for my rights to exist and to live a life worthy of the freedom fighters before me. Through school I've been taught the queen's English and a colonized history rewritten for and by men to make themselves great in the afterlife. But in times like these when Black joy has been criminalized and demonized. When Black laughter is deemed too rowdy for public space and Black dance too vulgar for the human race. Everything about Blackness is being comprised, categorized, policed, confined, stolen and repackaged; But not today. Today I'm taking a mental health day, a Black mental health day, where my only focus is on Black Joy: how to harness it, maintain it, and protect it. I wish there were more days like these. BMHDays that would be paid for by the state as reconciliation for all the Black bloodshed and hate. A message for my LGBTQ students...”For those of us who are vulnerable, scared, and desperate for any assurance that things will get better, remember this moment captured in time. For many LGBTQ children -particularly those with African/Caribbean parents- it’s unfathomable to think that mom would even glance sideways at a Pride parade let alone get to the event early (and in the rain) for a front row spot 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈 * * I don’t know the specific details of this mother/daughter journey. I have no way of knowing if a painful coming out was ever part of their story. What I do know is that visibility is everything. And this photograph would have meant everything to me at a time in my life when I was convinced that my sexuality made me unlovable in the eyes of my Jamaican mom. * * Indeed. Visibility is everything because it offers a vision of what is POSSIBLE. Even when we can’t imagine it for ourselves. * * For those of us who are vulnerable, scared, and desperate for any assurance that things will get better, remember this moment captured in time. Let this mother’s loving glance be a substitute for the love that is being withheld from you right now. And know that you are perfect and brilliant just the way you are. In documenting community, motherhood, childhood and joy, sometimes all the elements come together unexpectedly. This mother of 13 (soon-to-be great grandmother) and this young boy live in the same building (which happens to be where I grew up) but did not know each other. I spent part of Mother’s Day visiting my old stomping grounds on assignment for a photography course. This beautiful moment happened when this mother of 13 (and soon to be great grandmother) insisted on posing with a boy she did not know. This photograph is of the moment right before she gently drew him closer and kissed his forehead. #humblebrag I still get “early 30’s” even though I was around for Watergate (do the math) 🤔 I never take credit though. I owe it all to my mama, whose skin at her advanced age -which I’m not gonna spill (I ain’t crazy!) is flawless! Happy Mother’s Day Laurel Yvonne. You may not have many worry wrinkles, but your kids know what you’ve endured to be here. There are so many things about this journey to Costa Rica that have felt Divinely orchestrated. Finally meeting Valarie Kaur (who happens to be in C.R. on sabbatical writing her book Revolutionary Love) was truly one of them. We talked about art, film, howler monkeys and of course mothering! 🐒There are few leaders today capable of articulating the antidote for hate with such clarity and compassion. I’m so grateful for her poetic way of labouring for the liberation of our children. The process of making Mothering in the Movement has already been nourished deeply by her power and presence. If you haven’t already, watch Valarie’s “Darkness of the tomb/womb” speech or her latest TED talk and you’ll know. You’ll just know. ✊🏾❤️🙏🏾 #costarica #puravida #artistresidency #sweetlabour #revolutionarylove #motheringinthemovement #documentary #womeninfilm #blackwomeninfilm #othermothers #motheractivist #valariekaur

Today I got to join Hamilton Family Health Team for a keynote focusing on intersectional #lgbtq healthcare. I drew a lot on my incredibly positive experience with midwives as examples of care that is patient centered and affirming. Beautiful crowd and really engaging questions. Then I rolled with my baby to visit my mom in Hamilton. She is experiencing a whole other end of the health system and it’s heartbreaking to draw on her experiences, and the increasing need for accessibility as our population ages. At the beginning and end of life, we are all incredibly vulnerable. I don’t believe people learn well through shame, and I strongly believe in connecting to communities of of practice as we share knowledge and grow. I speak from my lived experience to situate it all in the heart and tap into people’s empathy to confront our privilege and increase access for others. Keeping her close to my heart only makes that deeper. #bethechange #educator #6weekspostpartum #6weeksold #community #care #motheringinthemovement
