I can’t even begin to express the profound respect and admiration I have for this woman. Stephan was spectacular tonight. You, a picture of grace and beaming pride. I am so honoured to know you and to have played a small part in your family’s story (your kind words were everything ❤️) I continue to root for you and for all the moms out there transforming the world through their work, their art, their children ✊🏾❤️🙏🏾 #motheringinthemovement #blackmoms #motherhood #ifbealestreetcouldtalk #worldpremiere #tiff2018

EXT. QUEEN STREET WEST -DAY * * Holding her camera, street photgrapher and filmmaker behind upcoming doc, Mothering in the Movement, sits on a bench she has borrowed from a nearby cafe and placed in front of a vibrant red restaurant facade. As she reflects on the passage of time and motherhood, her stillness contrasts powerfully with the energy of moving downtown traffic reflected in the widows behind her. * * When it comes to consuming media, I understand the importance of identifying voice, namely whose voices are being amplified and whose are being suppressed. * * Now, as the person holding the camera and sharing other women’s stories, no less, it is vital that I get really clear about why I’m making this film about mother-activists. That’s what this week’s ‘interiors’ (reflections on motherhood) and exteriors have been about. Getting clear about why I HAVE to be the one to make this particular film at this time...The clearer I am about that, the deeper the story will be served and its participants honoured. * * Thanks to director and DP, Rochelle Chambers for stepping in last minute and shooting me for our development trailer. To Ngardy Conteh George for her technical support and insightful conversations about being mom. To my producers Alison Duke and Lea Marin who continue to push, and prod, and mine the material (and me!) for the richest content. To Babes who has watched every iteration of this work so far, always willing to offer up honest critique. And finally to Sonia Godding Togobo, an editor with a true gift for using moving images and sound to rewrite us into our own stories with the brilliance and power we’ve always possessed. You were the true MVP this week! 🎥✊🏾❤️ #dothework #documentaryfilm #filmmaking #womeninfilm #blackwomeninfilm #filmmakingasapracticeofselfknowledge #motheringinthemovement #indevelopment #letsgetthismoney 😏

Safety first! Apparently even indoors at the production office 🤓⚠️ * * Truth be told, I absolutely LOVE that I can hop on my electric scooter and be at work by the 3rd song of my “Cruel Summer” playlist (Yeah Bananarama. Whatchu wanna say??) It’s such a welcomed change from my teacher life commute of 20km every morning by car. * * On top of all that, the production space @therealgoldelox and @gadstar have created is so inviting and conducive to well...production. When I first picked up a camera professionally (L’Oreal Fashion Week circa 2005), I never could have imagined that years later I’d be making my first feature documentary about a quartet of badass mamas. A quick scroll through their timelines and you’ll understand why we’re making this film. * * To @akiomaroon @dbiyounganitafrika @kimkatrinmilan @staceyannchin and the many other mamas, grandmamas, aunties & “othermothers” across the globe, we SEE you. We acknowledge your labour in public institutions, in political spaces, in the streets of your communities, and in your homes. We understand your urgency. We honour your fierce passion, your creativity, and your presence. Mothering in the Movement mom Akio Maroon sums up our film’s raison d’être in one beautiful post (below). Revolutionary love, indeed. ✊🏾❤️🙏🏾 #motheringinthemovement ・・・ Repost @akiomaroon Black.Girl.Joy My whole life I've been taught to fight for freedom, for my rights to exist and to live a life worthy of the freedom fighters before me. Through school I've been taught the queen's English and a colonized history rewritten for and by men to make themselves great in the afterlife. But in times like these when Black joy has been criminalized and demonized. When Black laughter is deemed too rowdy for public space and Black dance too vulgar for the human race. Everything about Blackness is being comprised, categorized, policed, confined, stolen and repackaged; But not today. Today I'm taking a mental health day, a Black mental health day, where my only focus is on Black Joy: how to harness it, maintain it, and protect it. I wish there were more days like these. BMHDays that would be paid for by the state as reconciliation for all the Black bloodshed and hate. In documenting community, motherhood, childhood and joy, sometimes all the elements come together unexpectedly. This mother of 13 (soon-to-be great grandmother) and this young boy live in the same building (which happens to be where I grew up) but did not know each other. Our children are #soeasytolove ❤️#amotherslove #motheringinthemovement #motherhood #blackjoy #blackboymagic #ittakesavillage #protectourchildren #childhooduninterrupted #childhood

I spent part of Mother’s Day visiting my old stomping grounds on assignment for a photography course. This beautiful moment happened when this mother of 13 (and soon to be great grandmother) insisted on posing with a boy she did not know. This photograph is of the moment right before she gently drew him closer and kissed his forehead. There are so many things about this journey to Costa Rica that have felt Divinely orchestrated. Finally meeting Valarie Kaur (who happens to be in C.R. on sabbatical writing her book Revolutionary Love) was truly one of them. We talked about art, film, howler monkeys and of course mothering! 🐒There are few leaders today capable of articulating the antidote for hate with such clarity and compassion. I’m so grateful for her poetic way of labouring for the liberation of our children. The process of making Mothering in the Movement has already been nourished deeply by her power and presence. If you haven’t already, watch Valarie’s “Darkness of the tomb/womb” speech or her latest TED talk and you’ll know. When we remember to MOTHER THE MOTHER... “As a culture, we have woefully neglected the needs of new mothers. But this was not always so. Each year, on the first day of school, I share with my students a metaphor for emotional safety in the classroom. I describe for them one of my favourite childhood memories of being at a theme park and experiencing what came to represent for me THE epitome of joy– the BOUNCY CASTLE! * * * I explain that in the bouncy castle (like the enclosed trampoline pictured above) you are free to experiment with movement, take risks you would never consider taking on pavement, challenge yourself and your peers in playfulness not competition. In a bouncy castle, you don’t mind being pushed by a friend because you know that the act comes with the wish for you to experience something novel, something exhilarating. And even as you try to recover your balance, breathlessly you plead, “PUSH ME AGAIN!” * * * The metaphor appeals to the imaginations of my young students by asking them to consider how their lives might change if they knew they had a SOFT PLACE TO LAND. * * * And while little Black girls and boys are busy imagining the heroics they will perform in life, M/others of the Movement are busy dismantling systems as rigid as concrete so that their children might only know soft landings. TW: intergenerational trauma discussed * * Intergenerational trauma is real. We don't need studies to understand that pain knows no bounds. It's not a stretch to grasp that the nutrient-rich blood we shared with our mothers contained the residue of her traumas. Oftentimes, our mothers are too close to the edge of that pain to help us appreciate the possibility of healing. Grandmothers however, one generation removed (yet wholly present), are beautifully positioned to help guide us. They gently pull us back from the precipice of pain and teach us how to see with new eyes. A dark chasm bridged by a grandmother's love. Her alchemical methodologies transforming past hurts into joy. * * This is what most excites me about making this film. I get to bear witness to the many ways mothers, grandmothers, and all those who mother transform lives, subvert systems of oppression, perform miracles, promote healing, instil joy. * * #motheringinthemovement #mothering #grandmother #granddaughters #grandmothering #mothers #mothersaretherevolution #revolutionarymothering #documentaryfilm #docs #nfb #community #blackmoms #womeninfilm #blackwomeninfilm #womendirectors #directher #blacklivesmatter #blackmomsmatter #blacklove

Celebrate tiny miracles like making a photo (hate the word “capturing”) where two toddlers are looking at the camera at the same time! 😂 👶🏾👶🏾 📸 It’s ironic that daddy, Ase got cut out of the frame considering how active these boys were. * * Thank you mama Shen for sharing what it’s like to be a mom to two Black boys. Our conversation reminded me that the EMOTIONAL LIVES OF BLACK BOYS are perennially misunderstood. To be a community that mothers Black boys in revolutionary ways we must come to some SACRED AGREEMENTS * * 1) We must agree to SEE your boys as children, not mini adults (I don’t use “Little man” anymore with my young black students) * * 2) We agree to HONOUR their uniqueness and CELEBRATE their energy. * * 3) We must commit to nurturing their CAREFREE spirits while CARING for them spiritually, emotionally and physically. * * 4) We agree that they are tiny MIRACLES. We commit to creating a world that NEVER FORGETS that. * * #motheringinthemovement #mothersaretherevolution #familyvalues #blackfamily #raisingblackboys #blackboyjoy #blackboys #documentary #blackwomeninfilm #directher #womeninfilm

Whether the “conversation” is a silent tongue-lashing or a tender checking in like the one pictured, there is something so beautiful (not to mention revolutionary) about the wordless language developed between a Black mother and her child. * * * My science nerd theory is that in the face of persistent anti-Black racism, MOC have had to develop this sophisticated communication skill as an evolutionary imperative #survivalofthefittest #mothering #motheringinthemovement #revolutionarymothering #blackmomsblog #blackmothers #motherhood #documentaryfilm #blackwomendirectors #blackwomeninfilm #directher #nfb #docs #blackgirlmagic #blackhair

We knew that we lived in subsidized housing, and that gifts like that Donkey Kong JR tabletop video game (pic # 3) were well beyond mom’s financial reach. * * * As an adult, I suppose my ambivalence around the holidays stems from negotiating this tenuous space between scarcity and abundance...a space my mom managed to adorn and beautify at least once a year. #revolutionarymothering #motheringinthemovement #mothers #motherhood #christmas #christmasmemories #growingupblack #singlemothers #motherslove #docfilm #womeninfilm #blackwomeninfilm #documentary #blackwomendirectors #directher

#repost @motheringinthemovement ・・・ My recent visit with first-time mother-to-be @kimkatrinmilan reminded me that the Revolution in the name of a Black child begins way before that child's medical team makes a potentially life-threatening decision about their mom's postnatal care based on racial bias (Black women are 3-4x more likely to die of pregnancy-related complications than White women). * * The revolution begins before that child enters kindergarten to learn that their teacher's tendency to more closely monitor Black kids contributes to Black preschoolers being 3.6 x more likely to receive one or more suspensions relative to White kids (Yale study 2016) * * The revolution begins way before that child enters high school to encounter lower academic expectations or to be streamed into Applied courses 2x more than their peers from other racial backgrounds (York U 2017) * * It begins before that child is stopped and frisked by police with little to no anti-bias training, unlawfully carded, threatened or worse... * * Mothers in Movement are engaged in the work of conceiving and imagining a more just world while literally birthing our potential as a people. Skeptics worry that a radical or hyper-politicized mother equates to children burdened by the weight of grownup issues. This couldn't be further from the truth for my moms/children of the Movement. The awareness and constant vigilance activist-mothers have around the injustices of the world are heightened when in the presence of their children - particularly at play. Mothers of the Movement use PRESENCE like a magic spell, casting out darkness, bringing the NOW into (Technicolor) focus for their kids. What an honour to bear WITHness to these sacred moments 🙏🏾❤️✊🏾🎨 * * * #motheringinthemovement #mothering #grandmother #granddaughters #grandmothering #mothers #mothersaretherevolution #revolutionarymothering #documentaryfilm #docs #nfb #community #blackmoms #womeninfilm #blackwomeninfilm #womendirectors #directher #blacklivesmatter #blackmomsmatter #blacklove #childhood #blackjoy #blackgirl #blackgirlmagic

On World Teachers Day let's honour the moms who choose to homeschool or "unschool" their children as a way of challenging hegemonic models of education that often do more damage than good - particular to kids of colour * * Mothers who engage in the tough conversations about identity, race, politics...those who take their kids to places like the African Burial Ground in Manhattan are actively subverting institutional mandates built around notions of assimilation and cultural homogeneity. To teach - to truly teach is to traverse the difficult terrain of our pained history alongside our children, providing context and encouraging critical thought. This is indeed an act of love. It's also a radical act of resistance. #mothering #motheringinthemovement #motheringinthemovementfilm #documentaryfilm #docs #nfb #researchmode #womeninfilm #blackfilm #blackwomeninfilm #directher #community #mothersaretherevolution #revolutionarymothers #homeschooling #unschooling @fareofthefreechild

Experienced authentic community in my first ever Brooklyn Block Party several weeks ago! Tompkins street was literally vibrating with bodies, bass, and babies. Ironically, the street was closed off by police barricades, making it completely safe, if even just for an evening, for hundreds of kids to run around and BE...playful, Black, carefree. With each urgent, unapologetically deafening cry for justice, mothers in the Movement are pursuing THIS. A world for their kids where police presence does not equal death. A world where water from a fire hydrant need not indicate that poor people are burning in a highrise. A world where little Black girls and boys can be playing in the streets on a hot summer's day knowing that their parents and caregivers are nearby, keeping watch from their front stoops. * * * "cause the revolution is not about self-defense, it's about self-creation, it's about seeing farther than the walls directly in front of us" - Cynthia Dewi Oka (Revolutionary Mothering anthology, 2016) #motheringinthemovement #documentaryfilm #docs #mothers #mothering #community #brooklyn #blockparty #brooklynsummers #womeninfilm #womendirectors #blackmoms #blackwomeninfilm #blackbabies #blackgirlmagic #blackgirlhairstyles #ourstories #revolutionarylove #revolutionaries #mothersaretherevolution #bedstuy #ittakesavillage #revolutionarymothering #mmfanpics

VIGILANCE, Latin for 'to keep awake', lies at the heart of mothering. Indeed, for most species mothering without persistent watchfulness is not mothering at all. As I move deeper into the topic of mothering as a revolutionary practice, I'm learning that activist-moms, whether single or partnered, deliberately form communities of women (VIGILANTES?) around their children to help KEEP WATCH. Chosen aunties, sisters, and cousins play an essential role in keeping vigil and responding to both dangers and opportunities for growth. Single mom, Umay with youngest daughter Omolara, says this about her network of women, "I couldn't do this without the them. Phyllis, Annemarie & Shanice. Three generations here, existing, mattering, and revered. I marvel at the subtle persistence of motherhood. How a child, no matter how grown, still looks like a child when her mother is near. The presence of a mother or mothering figure in one's life reminds us that we can be vulnerable AND loved. We can be "bad" AND loved. We can be confused AND loved. We can be angry AND loved. A child who grows up knowing that she can be exactly who she is AND still receive the unrelenting embrace of her mother, is a child prepared to confront with power and dignity the agents of oppression put in place to destroy that bond (read: capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy, poverty...) Moms, Lauren (black dress) and Dezi are fiercely and passionately workin' double time as moms to twins, Dries & Henrik, Kamarley & Zidanie respectively. When asked about activism and mothering, here's what Lauren had to say, "After 7 years of being a mom, I'm newly embracing the term "activist". Being an activist is about taking action...it's a proactiveness about being sensitive. A proactiveness about (teaching) compassion. I'll know I'm a success when someone says (my boys) are compassionate and thoughtful." I am humbled by the moms on the street willing to share with me, the joys and challenges of raising carefree Brown and Black children amidst sociopolitical forces designed to negate and/or erase their significance. Honoured to be in a position to explore mothering and activism as they commingle and intersect. "Mothering in the Movement" film was conceived from a simple desire to document the undervalued work of women (particularly mothers and those who mother) at the centre of social justice movements. It has blossomed into a film that yearns to do so much more. Mothering has taken on a life of its own and like any new creation, it will stretch, expand, and take up space. It will challenge, interrogate, and move its viewers to consider the implications of ideologies and practices that don't centre women and children. I no longer have any control over the life force of this film. All I can do is trust my instincts and act as a midwife to the creative process. I wouldn't want it any other way. {📷 @quazimottoonwx } * * * #motheringinthemovement #mothering #mothers #mothersaretherevolution #revolutionarymothers #community #momlife #moms #activists #motherhood #momactivist #motheractivist #womeninfilm #blackwomeninfilm #blackwomen #tattoos #sistaink #blackink #blackmoms #indiefilm #nfb #documentaryfilm #docs #blackwomendirectors #solongsummer #backtoschool #teacherfilmmaker #brooklyn #brooklynphotographer

"No generation has ever been so sensitive to our childhood traumas and at the same time so neglectful of the children in our midst...you shouldn't have to have children (biologically) for them to be front and centre in your consideration" -Marianne Williamson (in response to my question re: mothering) * * Deep, deep gratitude to you, @mariannewilliamson for your continued guidance of our hearts and minds 🙏🏾❤️✊🏾I look forward continuing our discussion about mothering in times and spaces of resistance. #mariannewilliamson #nyc #motheringinthemovement #motheringinthemovementfilm #acim #acourseinmiracles #leadwithlove #mothersaretherevolution #womeninfilm #blackwomeninfilm #directher #womendirectors #documentaryfilm #docs #nfb #spirituality #latergram

I had a conversation today with the formidable Lurie Daniel Favors (look her up) about mothering in times and spaces of resistance. When asked whether it's too much of a burden for children to be taught about the horrors of our past, she reminded me of the importance of CONTEXT. If you're not sure how context supports a child's enculturation/education, ask yourself if you've ever met a Jewish young person who didn't know about the Holocaust. * * Mothers who engage in the tough conversations about identity, race, politics...those who take their kids to places like the African Burial Ground in Manhattan are actively subverting institutional mandates built around notions of assimilation and cultural homogeneity. To teach - to truly teach is to traverse the difficult terrain of our pained history alongside our children, providing context and encouraging critical thought. This is indeed an act of love. It's also a radical act of resistance. {pictured here} Mother, Sena and son Fabio standing in front of archeological images displaying some of the 400+ human remains discovered in 1991 at the African Burial Grounds in Lower Manhattan * * #mothering #motheringinthemovement #motheringinthemovementfilm #documentaryfilm #docs #nfb #researchmode #womeninfilm #blackfilm #blackwomeninfilm #directher #community #mothersaretherevolution #revolutionarymothers #homeschooling #unschooling

TW: intergenerational trauma discussed * * Intergenerational trauma is real. We don't need studies to understand that pain knows no bounds. It's not a stretch to grasp that the nutrient-rich blood we shared with our mothers contained the residue of her traumas. Oftentimes, our mothers are too close to the edge of that pain to help us appreciate the view. Grandmothers however, one generation removed (yet wholly present), are beautifully positioned to help us heal. They gently pull us back from the precipice of pain and teach us how to see with new eyes. A dark chasm bridged by a grandmother's love. Her alchemical methodologies transforming past hurt into moments of joy.

Came across a magazine article I annotated a decade ago (May 2007)! Alice Walker admonishing us to pull our grandmothers out from the weight of patriarchy and depression. "I saw the damage to the feminine that patriarchy imposes, and I understood that it's often the old woman-the grandmother, with all of that accumulated wisdom and compassion-who is depressed. She is depressed because she sees things so clearly...Sadly many of them have been anesthetized, but many of them have not. They've just been silent." ✊🏾❤️🔥I've been writing this film for a long time * * * * #motheringinthemovement #alicewalker #mothers #mothering #grandmothers #mothersaretherevolution #revolutionarymothers #documentaryfilm #doc #documentary #nfb #indiefilm #community #researchmode #creativegestationperiod #120months

Experienced authentic community in my first ever Brooklyn Block Party a few evenings ago. A world where little Black girls and boys can look up to their stoops and find their families there - healthy, happy, and whole. ********************************* "cause the revolution is not about self-defense, it's about self-creation, it's about seeing farther than the walls directly in front of us" - Cynthia Dewi Oka (Revolutionary Mothering anthology, 2016) #motheringinthemovement #documentaryfilm #docs #mothers #mothering #community #brooklyn #blockparty #brooklynsummers #womeninfilm #womendirectors #blackmoms #blackwomeninfilm #blackbabies #blackgirlmagic #blackgirlhairstyles #ourstories #revolutionarylove #revolutionaries #mothersaretherevolution #bedstuy #ittakesavillage #revolutionarymothering #mmfanpics

Following the 2015 Paris attacks, a kid in Maryam's 5th grade class made a remark about "most Muslims being terrorists". Maryam's teacher responded by saying a terrorist could be anyone. Not the perfect response...but it was kinda what Maryam wanted to say. This incident was documented in an NPR interview with Maryam and her mother, Maya (Muslim Parenting in an Age of Terror). It got me thinking about the work that goes into preparing a Black, Brown, Indigenous child to confront ignorance on the streets -yes, but particularly in the classroom where young people often look to teachers and text books for validation of their beliefs. Over the past week, I've snuck up on, chased down, and "accidentally" brushed up against strangers on the street in an effort to share one moment of connection in a world that feels increasingly dys-connected. Not gonna lie, it's scary to risk being rejected and embarrassed, but then I remember that fear is a construct of a society designed to separate and render us desperate for (commodified) connections. Every time a stranger says YES! to being photographed, I am reminded that that burden of fear was never mine to bear #directormode #researchmode #womeninfilm #womendirectors #gameface #blackgirlmagic #harlem #bedstuy #brooklyn #streetphotography #canoncamera #canon #motheringinthemovement #motheractivists #revolutionaries #mothering #shareyourstory #shareourstories #blackisbeautiful #studiomuseum

A child who grows up knowing that she can be exactly who she is AND still receive the unrelenting embrace of her mother, is a child prepared to confront with power and dignity the agents of oppression put in place to destroy that bond (read: capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy, poverty...)
