Exercises for low back pain. *keep neck in line with spine. Try not to excessively look down or crank your neck up during the whole set* 1. Bird dog (keep pelvis neutral. No excessive tilt. keep core tight.) 2. Banded bird dog (if you need something a bit more challenging.) 3. Hip abductions/fire hydrants 4. Clamshells (these really work the gluteus medius which is underdeveloped in most people. if you’ve never done these, it may feel like you’re cramping up. keep doing it.) 5. Ab roll outs. (These are a bit advanced but can be modified by not going down all the way. Keep a flat low back here.) 6. Plank. (Keep glutes active. Squeeeze em. Remain strong in shoulders. Don’t let them collapse in.) I like doing these exercises anywhere from 8-15 reps. Planks are timed. • The reason why a lot of people have low back pain is due to an underdeveloped core, and posterior chain (glutes, hamstrings). These exercises focus on both. SQUATS, BACK PAIN AND THE "BUTT WINK" In the video above, notice the decrease in compensatory pelvic flexion (The dreaded "butt wink") as she performs a goblet squat vs back squat The front squat forces a more upright torso, and requires a higher level of core stability as well as thoracic mobility, while decreasing the contribution of hip rotatio. For those who suffer with lumbopelvic control, or hyperextend too much - you'll find your butt wink decreases significantly. Those with flexion-based back injuries will also benefit from restarting squats with a front squat because it forces the torso upright Conversely, those with an extension-based injury (ie. Acute facet) will benefit from a back squat due to the increased lumbar flexion and demand on the posteriocchain. There is an increased demand on hip rotation and lumbopelvic control - which makes this a tougher exercise than the front squat and is often a progression from it She came in complaining of hip-impingement symptoms and had difficulty engaging her core. here’s my first segment of how to not feel like sh*t: stretch this muscle—the psoas. Remember that idiom being ‘bummed out’? Well there’s something to that because most stress and tension will hide here. The only muscle to connect your upper body to your lower body. It is triggered by fight-or-flight, but it also triggers fight-or-flight. It’s a vicious cycle we endure when we sit in an unsustainable position for long periods. A lot of joint/spinal issues originate here. Any part of our body can be affected by this area alone, including hands and feet; symptoms of pain aren’t necessarily indicative of the source. I hope by talking about stuff like this and my experiences with chronic pain, people will strive to get full range of motion before taking any major risks with medical care. I’m writing these things because these topics interest me and I’ll be a better writer in the end. If only for an Instagram post. I don’t really mind.
