Well, no... but let me explain. ⠀ I get messages saying things like… ⠀ “I went Paleo and lost weight without tracking my food." ⠀ "As soon as I stopped eating meat, I lost 20 pounds. No calorie counting." ⠀ “Every time I eat carbs, I start gaining weight again. The Muscles & Hypertrophy Series - Part Six⁣ ⁣ Only those muscle fibres that are both recruited and fatigued adapt.⁣ ⁣ Each Motor Unit contains a spectrum of muscle fibres types, from fast twitch (FT) to slow twitch (ST).⁣ ⁣ It isn’t actually the case that LTMU’s contain only ST fibres and HTMU’s only FT, it’s that HTMU’s contain both more total muscle fibres and a greater ratio of FT fibres.⁣ ⁣ Different muscles have different ratios of ST to FT fibres, which would suggest they’d respond better to slightly different rep ranges (though they’ll still respond to any).⁣ ⁣ For example, the Soleus muscle (deepest lying calf muscle) is on average 80% ST (with a range of 64-100%), while the Gastrocnemius muscle (top lying calf muscle) is about 50% FT, 50% ST (with a range of 34-82% FT).⁣ ⁣ Therefore Soleus may be better suited to slightly higher rep ranges due to its higher ratio of ST fibres.⁣ ⁣ Gastrocnemius meanwhile may be better suited to slightly lower rep ranges because of its higher proportion of FT fibres.⁣ ⁣ We might therefore decide to use a rep range of 5-10 on a Standing Calf Raise (Gastrocnemius dominant) while using a range of 15-20 for a Seated Calf Raise (Soleus dominant).⁣ ⁣ This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t use a variety of rep ranges.⁣ ⁣ It just means that a ST dominant muscle may be best hypertrophied through the use of higher rep sets taken very close to failure (in order to get those effective reps).⁣ ⁣ While a FT dominant muscle may be best hypertrophied through the use of lower rep sets (also taken within 5 reps of failure).⁣ ⁣ Finally, we must respect the governing principle of Progressive Overload.

🔥 SLOW TWITCH VS FAST TWITCH by @jmaxfitness - I want to preface this by saying that you can build muscle by training both your fast twitch and slow twitch muscle fibers. In fact, it's crucial if you want to maximize your muscle growth. - Fast twitch (type II) muscle fibers have a very high potential for growth. I recommend at least 50% of your training to be getting stronger in the 5-10 rep range on the big compound lifts. - Slow twitch (type I) muscle fibers are built via higher reps, low rest periods. The goal is to get a pump. In this picture, I wrote "lighter weights". I don't mean lifting little pink dumbbells! You want to lift as heavy as possible to have perfect form in the 12-30 rep range. What's been testing me lately is knee pain. After walking around Disneyland for a few hours my knees hurt so bad. It started after I began dropping weight, kind of the opposite of what I figured would happen. I swear my knees hurt worse than they did when I was significantly heavier. Anyone else experience this? @mazerfitness When people come to me for coaching and say they want to lose fat. The first thing I ask them is, 'well what are you doing right now to lose fat?'. Most of the time answer is something along the lines of 'I tried X fad diet and X juice cleanse but they didn't work. I also do cardio 5x a week' - Now this isn't necessarily wrong, I know it's fairly hard to figure out what information and products are real and what is fake because let's be honest here. The fitness and especially supplement industry is somewhat shady and if you're just starting, it can be a real maze to get through.. - Here's what you want to be doing to really lose fat: 👉 Dial in your nutrition. Building muscle mass is hard. It is simplistic in the sense that you simply just got to train hard with progressive overload and a small caloric surplus, but it is a grind. ⁣ ⁣ Often people fall into the trap of doing 10 different exercises for a single muscle in a single workout because you have to "shock the muscle". 2-4 different exercises per muscle is more than enough.⁣ ⁣ Furthermore, chasing the pump and half-repping is not ideal. Though a nice pump is awesome, only chasing it is not optimal to build muscle because it typically means you're placing enough mechanical tension on the muscle tissue. ⁣ ⁣ Finally, focus on your form. Don't neglect it in favour of more weight.
